Interviews All coach and student-athlete interviews must be arranged through Melody Stockwell. On gamedays, head coach Taras Liskevych, his assistants and members of the team will be available shortly after the match s conclusion. Interviews will be done in an informal manner on the court. Please notify Melody Stockwell of any requested players or coaches prior to the conclusion of the game. Practices Practices are held in legendary Gill Coliseum on a daily basis and are generally open to members of the media. Players and coaches are normally available for interviews before and after practice, depending on the schedule for that day. Please contact Melody Stockwell to schedule any interviews. Please DO NOT contact any players away from Gill Coliseum unless previously arranged by Melody Stockwell. Credentials Requests for all media credentials should be made to Melody Stockwell at least 24 hours in advance for the necessary match. 4 PREVIEW The 2009 season sees the Taras Liskevych Era s first recruiting class entering their senior season with eyes to leave their mark on Oregon State volleyball history. Four seniors and one junior starter return to competitive action this fall with a talented freshman class nipping at their heels. Looking to build on a season highlighted by a top 25 ranking and first ever All-America nod in 2008, Oregon State will have the most experience and depth on their roster in recent history. There will be no surprises to where the Beavers will look for leadership in Seniors Rachel Rourke, Lexie Rathgeber, Camilla Ah-Hoy and Bree Knitter have been the foundation on which Liskevych has built the program. Rathgeber and Ah-Hoy will don the captain hats, joining Rourke, Knitter and fellow senior Brittney Belshe as roles models in the gym that will shape the 2009 season as well as the future of the program. The junior class provides another piece of experience in Jill Sawatzky, Kiersten Sambrailo and Kaitlan Locke. Betsy Devich fills the role of the sole sophomore. The highly regarded freshmen class tops out at six with Tami Brown, Ashley Eneliko, Dianni Freeman, Megan McBride, Alyssa O Neil and Camille Saxton. Each newcomer has tools that will make the battle for playing time heated. This is really a special year for our program. It is the handing of the guard from our first recruiting class, who for the most part has been starting since they were freshman, to our incoming freshman class, an extremely talented group some of whom will really put pressure on the upperclassmen, Liskevych said. We have again improved from every season, but I feel 2009 will be the best yet. Our depth will give us the chance to get over the hump of a long Pac-10 season. Oregon State again has packed the preseason with strong competition. The Beavers will face NCAA Tournament teams over the course of their 30 matches. Competition includes six Pac-10 schools, five of which advanced to the Sweet 16 or further last season. The team gets its first test at the ASICS Classic, hosted by Colorado State, facing Cal Poly in the season opener before the host, Rams, and Pepperdine. The Beavers then return home to host Seattle, Wisconsin and Cal State Fullerton in the Active Ankle Challenge after a quick road trip up to the University of Portland for a single-match. The squad hits the road again for back-to-back tournaments at UNLV and Michigan to wrap up the non-conference portion of the 2009 campaign before returning home to host the Washington schools to open conference play. We ve got a tough schedule this season, Liskevych said. I think our first tournament is a tough one because all three teams are NCAA Tournament teams in their histories. The opener against Cal Poly, the second against Colorado State and the third against Pepperdine will all be tests. When we host the Active Ankle Challenge, you have three levels of teams there. And UNLV at home and Santa Barbara will be tough. Then we go to Michigan, where there are two NCAA teams in Dayton and Michigan, and then there s Marquette who has a new coach. I think we ll get a really good read on how good can we be based on some of those first competitions. MIDDLE BLOCKERS Senior co-captain Lexie Rathgeber has a solid lock on her role in the middle with junior Kiersten Sambrailo looking to hold down the second spot. Both freshmen Tami Brown and Ashley Eneliko have the physicality to find a way into the line-up. Rathgeber has been a stalwart at the net for the Beavers, blocking shots and forcing hitters to hit around her. The 2008 season saw her finish with 96 total blocks to lead the team, while adding 180 kills. Her numbers moved her up in the career record books into the top 10 lists for block assists (8th), total blocks (9th) and blocks per set (9th). Lexie again has improved her attacking and looks to make her senior season memorable. Sambrailo led the blocking statistics in the spring season and has found the floor more than her teammates with her slide attack. She finished the 2008 season with 24 total blocks and 35 kills on limited playing time, appearing in only 45 of the team s 112 sets. Consistency will be what the coaches look for from her this season. Brown has the least volleyball experience of any of her teammates having been a standout three-sport athlete in her prep career. However her size, athleticism and keen sports sense make her a viable contender for seeing time in her first season. Eneliko will be evaluated early on in both the middle and opposite positions. She is a tremendous leaper and natural blocker, and the coaches will assess how quickly she comes along in her development and where she will fit best. We still need depth in the middle blocker position, Liskevych said. We have two returning middle blockers Lexie, a four-year starter, and Kiersten, who s really come into her own at the end of last year and has been steadily improving. We re going to really need both Ashley Eneliko and Tami Brown to help out in those spots. So that s going to be a position where those freshmen need to make an impact right away OREGON STATE VOLLEYBALL

5 OUTSIDE HITTERS Seniors Rachel Rourke and Bree Knitter and junior Jill Sawatzky are penciled in to start at the pin positions for the Beavers. Freshman Camille Saxton will look to work her way into that mix. Rourke will carry the load as she has for the last three years. She will primarily swing from the left and backcourt but could find herself pacing the point scoring at opposite as well. Rourke earned a pair of firsts for the Oregon State volleyball program in 2008, becoming the first All-American and All- Region selection. She added Pac-10 First Team honors and was named Pac-10 Player of the Week after her 20-plus kill matches at the Marquette Cheesebowl. She finished the season with 497 total kills, averaging 4.44 per set, and moved into third all-time for career kills. Rourke added a team-high 20 aces, while adding 50 total blocks and 113 digs. Sawatzky will anchor the other side of the offense as she has since her freshman season and will also split time at opposite. She continued to build on her rookie season s success with 330 kills, averaging 3.08 per set, with 199 digs and 51 blocks. The coaches look for production from Sawatzky in her backcourt rotations and from the service line as well. The attacking X-factor has been Knitter, able to score from the left as well as run uptempo combinations from the opposite position. Knitter s blinding arm-speed is dangerous at both the net and from the service line. Her tough jump serve top spin accumulated 18 service aces on the team, the fourth most last season. Also contributing on the defensive end with 55 blocks, including five solo, she has steadied her performances in the spring season and the coaches look for her to find consistency in her senior season. Joining this group of experienced attackers is Saxton. A top Canadian indoor and outdoor player, Saxton is not only a hard-hitter, she is also a skilled shot-maker, server, defender and passer. Our outside hitters make an interesting group. Rachel and Jill both will play as outsides with Bree at opposite, Liskevych said. Bree can still be the hybrid that helps us in the middle at times, but really we want to play her opposite and see how that works out. One of the wild cards is how quickly can Camille Saxton come into the mix to help with that entire outside situation. SETTERS The setting position will have more depth with senior co-captain Camilla Ah-Hoy, junior Kaitlan Locke and newcomer Megan McBride. Guarding her role as the team s starting setter is Ah-Hoy. She finished the 2008 season with 1,143 total assists, averaging per set, while adding 232 digs and 64 blocks. The coaching staff looks for a better connection with the middles and continued floor leadership. Junior Kaitlan Locke will see more time in a role as serving specialist in addition to backup setting after tallying 27 assists, three service aces and 16 digs in 59 sets played. And knocking at the door for time leading the offense will be McBride. As a 6-1 lefty with serious attacking capabilities herself, she will need to acclimate to both the Beaver offense and the speed of Pac-10 volleyball quickly to nab minutes from Ah-Hoy. I think Camilla has gotten better every year. This is going to be her year to really take the next step up to be consistent throughout the season, Liskevych said. I think Kaitlan has been very good in filling the role as a substitute setter, but we re really looking at 2009 PREVIEW 5 her to be a serving specialist. That s what s going to get her on the court more than setting. We think that Megan is someone that could really turn into a very good setter at this level because of her height, setting ability, she s a lefty, she s very competitive and a very hard worker. I think we have more depth at the setting position than we ve had in the past. We d consider going from a 5-1 to a 6-2. But I think a lot depends on how well Megan adjusts to setting at this level. I think we would definitely not rule out a 6-2. DEFENSIVE SPECIALISTS/LIBERO The Beaver defense could see the hottest competition for floor time with senior Brittney Belshe, sophomore Betsy Devich, and freshmen Alyssa O Neil and Dianni Freeman all fighting for minutes. Belshe, and her wickedly effective serve, will continue to see opportunities at defensive specialist. Devich, primarily a defensive specialist in 2008, won the libero spot in the spring after the graduation of Ashley Evans. O Neil and Freeman will enter the fray for the opposite-colored jersey. Betsy was the defensive specialist last year but worked her way to being the libero in the spring, Liskevych said. But it s really an open battle for the libero spot with Brittney in the middle of it. The four defensive specialists are going to compete, and we ll see what happens. You ll never find anyone who works harder or hustles more than Dianni. And then the great thing about Alyssa is she could also be used as an outside hitter in some of our drills, but it s really going to depend on that position who comes out to be a very steady passer and serve receiver because that s going to be something we really look at. osubeavers.com
