THIS WEEK The top-ranked USC men s water polo team sets up camp in Stockton, Calif., this weekend as the Trojans go to work to defend one of several titles they secured in The first repeat crown USC aims to claim is the NorCal Tournament championship. The 2011 edition of the competitive tourney takes place in Pacific s pool, running Saturday and Sunday (Sept ). USC is grouped with Long Beach State, UC Irvine and West Valley JC for Saturday s competition, opening with an 8 a.m. matchup against West Valley. A win puts the Trojans into a 2:40 p.m. game against the winner of the morning s UC Irvine-Long Beach State clash. Semifinals and placement games are set for Sunday, where a pair of Saturday wins would put the Trojans in a 10:40 a.m. semifinal, and the title match is scheduled for a 5:20 p.m. start following a 4 p.m. third-place game. RANKINGS USC opened 2011 as the No. 1 team in the land deference to the Trojans three straight NCAA titles and status as reigning MPSF Tournament champs and remains there after a 2-0 start to the season. USC s groupmates for this weekend s NorCal Tournament includes No. 6 UC Irvine, No. 9 Long Beach State and unranked junior college squad West Valley. USC is the top seed in the tourney, with the rest of the field including No. 2 California, No. 3 UCLA, No. 4 Stanford, No. 5 host Pacific, No. 8 UC Santa Barbara, No. 6 Pepperdine, No. 11 UC Davis, No. 13 Concordia, No. 16 Santa Clara, No. 19 St. Francis, No. 20 Air Force and unranked Vanguard. NORCAL TOURNEY NOTES The NorCal Tournament has traditionally offered one of the best early looks at the nation s top teams. This year proves to be more of the same. Including tournament host Pacific, all nine Mountain Pacific Sports Federation teams will be included, along with competitive teams from around the country. Non- California-based powers St. Francis and Air Force are making the trip to Stockton, along with UC Davis, Concordia, Santa Clara, Vanguard and West Valley JC. All told, the top nine ranked teams in the nation will be in the mix, with 14 teams ranked in the top-20. Last year, USC turned heads with a surge to the 2010 NorCal Championship. Picked to finish fourth in the MPSF, USC moved through Navy 15-6 and beat UC Irvine to move into the semifinals against top-seeded host Cal. The Trojans beat the Bears in the semis, and then topped UCLA in the title match. LAST WEEK USC punched up a 14-3 win over No. 18 Cal Baptist last weekend in the Trojans home opener with a wave of scoring coming from Peter Kurzeka. The Trojan senior plugged in six goals to lead the charge on USC s second win of the year, recording the most goals scored by a Trojan in a single game since 2001, while at the same time pulling himself up in the USC record book, now ranking No. 22 all-time with 110 career goals. USC forced its way out of a one-goal game by building that 2-1 lead to a 14-1 advantage. Kurzeka would get to six in that span, while Nikola Vavic racked up a hat trick on a set of slick scores. Jeremy Davie and Matt Burton impressed as well, recording a pair of goals apiece during the Trojan push. Senior goalie Joel Dennerley went the distance in the cage for USC, hauling in 10 saves to stymie the Lancers. He s now 20 saves away from locking in at No. 1 all-time in career saves at USC. IN THE BOOKS USC seniors Joel Dennerley and Peter Kurzeka have inked their names on the USC career charts with impressive numbers as they touch in on their final seasons at Troy. Dennerley sits at No. 2 all-time in career saves with 655 to date, closing in fast on the top spot held by Kevin Stringer with 675. Kurzeka, meanwhile, is climbing up the career goals ladder. His 100th career goal was the winner in USC s 2010 NCAA Championship game, and he now holds 110 to rank No. 22 all-time. INTERNATIONAL PREVIEW Trojans Jeremy Davie and Kosta Genidounias join forces as teammates for the first time after having squared off as opponents at the FINA Men s Junior World Championships. A returning All-American for the Trojans, Davie capped up for his Australian Junior National Team, while newcomer Genidounias was a hometown hero for more

Both Trojans were key contributors for their respective squads overseas, as Australia and Greece wound up clashing in the third-place game. Davie struck first for Australia in the game, but it was Greece that would prevail in a 7-5 decision that secured a bronze medal for Genidounias and his Greek teammates. SENIOR CORE AIMS FOR FOUR Trojan seniors Matt Burton, Joel Dennerley and Peter Kurzeka were freshmen when USC won the 2009 NCAA championship. As sophomores, they again held the trophy high at the end of that season. Last year, as juniors, they led a USC squad picked to finish fourth in the conference to the top yet again. Now, with the stiff breeze of three straight national championships pushing them into their senior season at Troy, the All-American trio aims to go out on top once again and, in doing so, become the first collegiate men s water polo team ever to win four consecutive national championships. YOUNG GUNS RETURN Offensively, USC s top 10 scorers from 2010 are back in the water. That group accounted for 81 percent of USC s goal count last season. USC s top scorer as a freshman and an All-American as well, Nikola Vavic returns. More young power is generated from All- American Jeremy Davie, and fellow sophomores Mace Rapsey and Connor Virjee, who helped claim that third straight title in their first seasons of action with the Trojans, along with Tobias Preuss and Stephen Siri. More veteran talent comes in the form of Brian Boswell and Michael Rosenthal, members of USC s last two NCAA championship rosters. USC dropped two losses during the regular season, but went on a roll to close out the year by winning the MPSF Tournament title and then finishing off a overtime win over host Cal in the NCAA Championship game. It was USC s 25th NCAA appearance and sixth national championship, and gave the Trojans their fourth title in the past six seasons. Jovan Vavic was named the National Coach of the Year, making him the only men s water polo coach to earn three consecutive selections. Five Trojans were named All- Americans at year s end as well. 6 JOVAN VAVIC 17th season (367-61) 9-time MPSF Coach of the Year 9-time National Coach of the Year 9 National Titles Jovan Vavic, one of the top water polo coaches in the country, serves a dual role as the head coach of both the USC men s and women s teams. He has led both to national championships three times in the same school year ( , and ), and has now lifted the Trojans to three consecutive national championships with the USC men s run to the 2008, 2009 and 2010 title. He holds nine national championships (six men s and three women s), and is a nine-time National Coach of the Year and nine-time MPSF Coach of the Year between the two programs. He also has seen his players win nine Peter J. Cutino Awards. Now in his 17th season at the helm of the men s program, Vavic has improved his career coaching record on the men s side to (.857). In the calendar year of 2010, Vavic swept both sides of the game, following 2010 National and MPSF Coach of the Year awards on the women s side with 2010 National and MPSF Coach of the Year with the men in leading the Trojan men to their third consecutive national championship. The 2010 campaign saw Vavic s Trojans defy the national predictions of a fourth-place finish in the conference by instead forcing their way to successfully defending their NCAA crowns with a third straight national championship. A overtime win over host Cal in the 2010 title match finished off a 28-2 record for the MPSF and NCAA champions. In 2009, Vavic had guided the Trojans to a 26-2 record en route to USC s second straight national championship. In the 2009 title match, the Trojans beat UCLA 7-6 to win USC s fifth NCAA championship. Soon after, Vavic was named the National Coach of the Year, and he would see his players sweep the Cutino Awards for the third time in his career, as J.W. Krumpholz and Kami Craig went back-to-back as the 2009 and 2010 Cutino Award winners following the USC women s run to the 2010 NCAA Championship. In 2008, the USC men were unstoppable. The Trojans claimed the program s third MPSF Championship on the way to the best season in program history with a 29-0 undefeated mark that cumlinated in the 2008 NCAA Championship for USC s fourth national title. Vavic s 300th career men s win was notched on Oct. 12, 2008 in a 12-7 win over Cal 12-7 in the SoCal Tournament semifinals. Going 19-3 overall, the Vavic s 2007 Trojans claimed the MPSF Tournament championship, placing a program-best seven players on All-MPSF teams and reaching its third straight NCAA title match. USC posted its first undefeated regular season in 2006, as its overall winning streak grew to a program-record 44 straight victories. Vavic was named the MPSF Coach of the Year for the sixth time in his career, and the Trojans finished 2006 with a 26-2 overall record after a last-second loss in the NCAA championship match. It was USC s second straight trip to the final, as Vavic had guided the Trojans to their third-ever NCAA Championship and a program-best 26-1 record in For his success in guiding USC to the NCAA crown in 2005, Vavic was named the AWPCA National Men s Coach of the Year. His Trojans also claimed the 2005 MPSF Championship, and Vavic earned himself MPSF Coach of the Year honors as well. At 26-1, USC posted its most wins in history and broke another record by closing out the year on an 19-game winning streak. In his tenure as men s head coach, Vavic boasts a winning record against all opponents on the men s side of the game, recording only two losses in 15 seasons against teams outside the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. He is (.807) against MPSF teams since Vavic came to USC in 1992 as an assistant men s water polo coach, joined John Williams as Troy s co-head coach in 1995 and took over the men s head coaching reins in 1999 after Williams retired. He and Williams were named National Coaches of the Year in 1998 after leading USC to its first-ever national championship. They also were named MPSF Co-Coaches of the Year in 1996 after leading USC to the conference title. In fact, in the season, Vavic did something no other coach has accomplished as his teams won three national championships. In addition to capturing the 1998 men s and 1999 women s titles, his 1999 men s club team won the Men s Senior National Club Championship. In 2003, Vavic pulled a coaching double sweep when he was named 2003 National and MPSF Coach of the Year for the men and 2004 National and MPSF Coach of the Year for the women. Vavic has been with the USC women s program since its inception in 1995, and the 2004 women s team became the first team in NCAA Championship history to go undefeated (29-0) during the regular season. The USC women s 25-3 overall mark in 2010 culminated in the women s program s third national championship and 13th straight 20-win season. In 2011, the USC women made their eighth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament, finishing with a 19-8 overall record. Overall, Vavic s career record on the women s side stands at (.757) in 17 seasons as the USC s women s head coach. Vavic earned his 300th career with with the Women of Troy in the third-place game of the 2007 NCAA Tournament a 13-6 win over UC San Diego on May 13, Vavic oversaw the women s water polo team s move from Division II in 1995 to Division I in 1996, and in 1997, he guided USC to its first-ever Division I National Collegiate Championships appearance and a seventh-place national finish while the 1998 team took fifth nationally. The 2000 squad added another strong showing as the Trojans finished second. Since 1999 when the program was fully funded, Vavic s record is (.849). In 1999, 2004 and 2010 Vavic was named the women s National and MPSF Coach of the Year. Vavic spent the 1991 season as an assistant men s coach at UCLA after coaching three seasons ( ) at Palos Verdes (Calif.) High, posting two undefeated league seasons ( ). In the summer of 2003, Vavic was the head coach for the USA s World University Games team that narrowly missed a chance to play in the medal round after losing to Serbia and Montenegro in a shootout. In 1995, Vavic served as an assistant water polo coach for the U.S. WUG team. Vavic, a native of Yugoslavia, graduated from UCLA in 1992 with a bachelor s degree in history.
