THIS WEEK USC looks to wrap up the regular season with a crosstown showdown against rival UCLA. The No. 4 Trojans (18-4, 6-2 MPSF) will head to Westwood for an MPSF matchup against the No. 1 Bruins (24-0, 8-0) at 1 p.m. on Sunday (Nov. 15). The game will be televised live on Pac-12 Network and Pac-12 Los Angeles, with Jim Watson and Greg Mescall on the call. RANKINGS USC was tabbed at No. 2 in the nation in the preseason national poll and in the MPSF preseason coaches poll as the Trojans take aim the 2015 season. USC has reached the NCAA title match for 10 consecutive seasons, with seven championships won in that span, and the Trojans are intent on a return trip to the top this year. The Trojans spent two weeks at the No. 3 spot but jumped back up to No. 2 on Oct. 7 and remained there until going to No. 3 on Oct. 28. The Trojans are currently ranked No. 4 in the nation for the second week in a row. WATCH ON PAC-12 NETWORKS LIVE STREAM (Subscribers Only): SCOUTING UCLA The No. 1 Bruins are 24-0 overall and 8-0 in MPSF play. Last week, UCLA beat UC Santa Barbara 9-4 and Long Beach State Ryder Roberts leads the Bruins in scoring with 46 goals, and goalie Garret Danner is averaging saves and 5.98 goals against per game. USC is all-time against the Bruins with losses in the past four meetings. The Trojans last beat UCLA 10-6 in the 2014 SoCal Tournament semifinals. Since then, the Bruins have beaten USC 10-8 in last year s MPSF meeting, 10-5 in the 2014 MPSF Tournament third-place game and 9-8 in the 2014 NCAA Championship. Last month, UCLA beat USC 10-9 in the 2015 SoCal Tournament final. LAST WEEK USC capped off its Senior Day celebration with a 14-8 victory over No. 7 UC Irvine last weekend. The win pulled the Trojans out of a two-game skid and put them back on a winning track in MPSF action. Thanks in part to a four-goal game from Blake Edwards, USC cruised along to victory over the Anteaters. Before the game, USC honored its two graduating seniors, Gerrit Hill and Mac Carden, who finish up their Trojan careers this season. USC and UC Irvine were in stride with one another in the first frame, with a pair of goals from Edwards following the opener from Nick Silvers as USC held a slim 3-2 advantage after eight minutes of play. That s when the Trojans hit the gas. Five straight USC goals came next as the Trojans put the Anteaters well out of reach. Two strikes apiece from James Walters and Matteo Morelli went along with a blast from Mihajlo Milicevic to boost the hosts out to an 8-2 lead. UCI broke its silence with a score before the close of the half, making it an 8-3 USC advantage at the break. The second half got out to a bang when Edwards drummed up his third of the game with a 5-meter penalty score to make it 9-2 Trojans. His fourth of the day would answer a score by the Anteaters, netting a 10-3 USC lead. Grant Stein would get to the back of the net next to help pad the USC lead a bit before UC Irvine managed back-toback goals before the end of the third. USC would hold an 11-6 lead entering the final frame. In the last eight minutes, Stein struck again and Morelli followed suit. Bryce Hoerman would get in on the scoring action next to balloon USC s lead out to 14-6 in a three-goal surge. UC Irvine had the last word of the game with two last strikes before the final horn sounded on a 14-8 victory for the Trojans. USC goalie McQuin Baron tallied his third double-digit save outing in four games in finishing up with 11 saves vs. UCI. TOURNAMENT TIME The Trojans will play host to the 2015 MPSF Tournament in two weeks time, with all 10 MPSF teams set to splash down at USC s Uytengsu Aquatics Center for the action running Nov An automatic NCAA bid goes to the winner of the tournament, with at-large berths also up for grabs for the conference s top teams. BY THE NUMBERS Now 22 games into 2015, the Trojans continue to boast some powerful numbers. Led by newcomer Blake Edwards with 58 goals, Grant Stein with 35, Lachlan Edwards with 32 and Matteo Morelli with 29 goals, USC has outscored opponents Defensively, USC is allowing just 5.95 goals per game and has held opponents scoreless in 17 periods of regulation play so far. Goalie McQuin Baron has capped up in the cage for every games and is averaging 10.2 saves per game. USC currently ranks No. 1 in the MPSF in offense (15.45 gpg) and No. 2 in defense (5.95 gapg).

2 2015 AWARDS FAMILY TIES The Trojan roster boasts a lot of brotherly love this season. Three sets of brothers are in the mix, with four other brothers following in the footsteps of Trojan siblings. The Edwards brothers (Blake & Lachlan) could be considered the bash brothers of the bunch, having combined for 85 goals to date. The Silvers brothers (Andrew & Nick) have produced 18 goals. The Leong brothers (Tim and Daniel) also combine forces on the 2015 roster this year. Four more Trojans are capped up for USC just as their older siblings have done. James Walters (brother Jon), Grant Stein (sister Michelle), Nick Lavayen (sister Stephanie and brother Alex) and Murphy Slater (sister Melanie) have all followed their family trees to Troy TROJANS AT A GLANCE As head coach Jovan Vavic digs into his third decade at the helm of the USC water polo program, the 2015 Trojans are a force to reckon with once again. Coming off their 10th consecutive trip to the NCAA final, the Trojans bring back a hefty load of players from that 2014 campaign. The only Trojan with three full seasons under his belt is redshirt senior Mac Carden. Meanwhile, USC s youth movement now includes a powerful group of sophomores, including All-Americans McQuin Baron, Mihajlo Milicevic and James Walters. The relative veteran of that 2014 All-American crew, Nick Bell, enters his junior season as a Trojan. Baron and Bell also were All-MPSF honorees last season along with nowgraduated All-Americans Rex Butler and Marc Vonderweidt and Cutino Award winner Kostas Genidounias. BLAKE TOPS THE CHARTS For the first time in a couple years, the USC scoring record seems to be safe. In 2013 and 2014, the Trojans saw the program scoring record broken first by Nikola Vavic in 2013 and then by Kostas Genidounias in And yet still, this season USC does have a standout Trojan making noise similar to that of his USC top guns predecessors. Transfer Blake Edwards leads the Trojans with 58 goals through 22 games this year, which is the 12th most goals scored by a Trojan in a single season. Edwards, Vavic and Genidounias are the only Trojans to score 58 or more goals in a single season since Juraj Zatovic finished with 68 in Edwards may only have two seasons to compete at USC, but his scoring prowess has certainly helped USC make up ground on the scoring front in HISTORY REPEATING With only two seniors on the roster this season, the Trojans have a large set of younger players flying under the radar this season, as no returning Trojan came into the season with more than 43 career goals. The last time that USC had a similar makeup was 2010, according to head coach Jovan Vavic. That year, USC had no seniors on the roster, and still went on to capture a third consecutive NCAA championship. This season, aside from redshirt senior Mac Carden, the only other Trojan with first-hand experience of playing in and winning an NCAA championship is junior All-American Nick Bell, who raised the 2013 trophy alongside Carden. Now 21 games into the year, the Trojans balanced effort is already apparent, with nine players having scored 15 goals or more, with five of those Trojans combining for just over half USC s offensive output to date. YOUTH MOVEMENT In 2014, USC had a whopping nine freshmen on the roster for the NCAA Tournament. Three of those freshmen earned All-American status last season and are back for more along with fellow All-American junior Nick Bell. Mihajlo Milicevic, James Walters and goalie McQuin Baron were All-American honorees after making a huge splash on the scene in their first seasons as Trojans. Baron set a USC record for single-season saves with 288 blocks logged in the cage last year. He s joined once again in leading USC s goalkeeping corps with sophomore Ben Goncharenko, with redshirt freshman goalie Steven Michaud also in the mix this season. USC s depth charge runs deeper as one takes into account the likes of sophomores Lachlan Edwards, Bryce Hoerman, Matteo Morelli, Lazar Pasuljevic and Grant Stein all members of USC s 2014 NCAA Tournament roster. Morelli was the most productive of the group last year, scoring 40 goals for the Trojan cause, just ahead of 34 from Walters, 33 from Stein and 31 from Edwards. This year is seeing a similar trend as Edwards (32 goals) and Stein (35) have already bettered or matched those scoring marks. Morelli (29) and Walters (19) are also factoring in heavily again to the Trojan offensive onslaught in their sophomore seasons. FRESH FACES Along with the addition of junior newcomer Blake Edwards, USC has a solid set of talent locked into their first season of action as Trojans. True freshmen Zach D Sa, Nick Lavayen and Nick Silvers are in line to considerable playing time this year. Head coach Jovan Vavic also is excited about the activation of a few players who redshirted last year, namely Murphy Slater, Tristan Reinhardt and Chase Koplow, as well as the marked improvement of redshirt sophomore Mitch Embrey. Many of those newbies wasted little time getting on the scoresheet, and the trend has continued. In all, nine players who have logged their first career minutes at Trojans this season have scored so far this year. QUALIFIED! Over the summer, several Trojans combined forces with their respective national teams in order to secure qualification to the coming 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Current USC goalie McQuin Baron capped up along with USC grad Nikola Vavic for Team USA, winning gold at the 2015 Pan American Games to earn the United States a spot in Rio. Weeks later, those two Trojans were among a group of four USC men in action at the 2015 FINA World Championships in Kazan, Russia. When the waves settled out there, USC s recent grad Kostas Genidounias was gripping a bronze medal that secured Greece a ticket to the 2016 Games. The fourth Trojan male competing at Worlds was another Cutino Award winner, goalie Joel Dennerley, who is looking to make another Olympic appearance for Australia when he and the Aussies fight for qualification out of Oceania RECAP USC continued its streak of reaching NCAA title matches after upsetting No. 2 seeded Stanford in sudden-death overtime in the NCAA semifinals. The No. 3 seeded Trojans had to start their NCAA journey with a play-in game, and would surge into the final to face top-seeded UCLA. A 9-8 loss left the 2014 Trojans short of a seventh consecutive national championship, but the young Trojans had made a statement still in reaching the NCAA final for the 10th straight year. Under head coach Jovan Vavic s guidance, USC finished the 2014 campaign with a 24-7 overall record after a 6-2 mark in MPSF play. Senior Kostas Genidounias broke USC s all-time scoring record en route to being named the Peter J. Cutino Award recipient to go along with his 2014 honors as MPSF and National Player of the Year. The four-time All- American was joined by fellow seniors Rex Butler and Marc Vonderweidt on 2014 s All-American honor roll, as were four representatives of USC s youth movement in sophomore Nick Bell and freshmen McQuin Baron, Mihajlo Milicevic and James Walters. In all, the Trojan offense charged by 21 different scorers averaged 14-2 goals per game, while the defense allowed 6.9 goals against per game. 6 JOVAN VAVIC 21st season (472-75) 13 National Titles 12-time National Coach of the Year 10-time MPSF Coach of the Year With 13 national championships won during his tenure at USC, Jovan Vavic has the most team titles of any USC head coach in history. Also solidified as one of the top water polo coaches in the country, Vavic serves a dual role as the head coach of both the USC men s and women s teams. He now has led both to national championships four times in the same school year ( , , and ), and has lifted USC to an unprecedented six consecutive men s national championships with the Trojans run to the 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 titles. He now holds 13 national championships (nine men s and four women s), and is a 12-time National Coach of the Year and 10-time MPSF Coach of the Year between the two programs. He also has seen his players win 10 Peter J. Cutino Awards. Now in his 21st season at the helm of the men s program, Vavic has improved his career coaching record on the men s side to (.863). In his tenure as men s head coach, Vavic boasts a winning record against all opponents on the men s side of the game, recording only two losses in2019 years against teams outside the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. He is (.816) against MPSF teams since Vavic s young 2014 Trojans were led by eventual Peter J. Cutino Award winner Kostas Genidounias, who became the program s alltime top scorer during his senior season. That year, USC would defy the odds and reach the NCAA title game for the 10th consecutive season, finishing as runners-up to close the year at 24-7 overall. In 2013, pulled off a sixth consecutive NCAA crown won in an overtime battle with Pacific and finished up with a 28-4 overall record. With a roster that would include six 2013 All-Americans, USC finished the year with seven straight wins in also claiming the MPSF Tournament title. For the third time in four years, Vavic s 2012 team boasted a program-high nine All-Americans including National Coach of the Year honors for Vavic and the National Player of the Year award for Vavic s son, Nikola following USC s run to a perfect 29-0 season and the 2012 National Championship. In their home pool, the Trojans captured their fifth consecutive title with a heart-stopping win over UCLA in the final. Vavic s 2013 women s team would go on to complete a dominating year for USC in winning the women s title. In 2011, the USC men finished off a fourth straight national title run with a 24-3 overall record thanks to a 7-4 win over UCLA in the final. In the calendar year of 2010, Vavic swept both sides of the game, following 2010 National and MPSF Coach of the Year awards on the women s side with 2010 National and MPSF Coach of the Year with the men in leading the Trojan men to their third consecutive national championship. The 2010 campaign saw Vavic s Trojans defy the national predictions of a fourthplace finish in the conference by instead forcing their way to successfully defending their NCAA crowns with a third straight national championship. A overtime win over host Cal in the 2010 title match finished off a 28-2 record for the MPSF and NCAA champions. In 2009, Vavic had guided the Trojans to a 26-2 record en route to USC s second straight national championship. In the 2009 title match, the Trojans beat UCLA 7-6 to win USC s fifth NCAA championship. Soon after, Vavic was named the National Coach of the Year, and he would see his players sweep the Cutino Awards for the third time in his career, as J.W. Krumpholz and Kami Craig went back-to-back as the 2009 and 2010 Cutino Award winners following the USC women s run to the 2010 NCAA Championship. In 2008, the USC men were unstoppable. The Trojans claimed the program s third MPSF Championship on the way to the best season in program history with a 29-0 undefeated mark that culminated in the 2008 NCAA Championship for USC s fourth national title. Vavic s 300th career men s win was notched on Oct. 12, 2008 in a 12-7 win over Cal 12-7 in the SoCal Tournament semifinals. USC posted its first undefeated regular season in 2006, as its overall winning streak reached a program-record 44 straight victories. Vavic was named the MPSF Coach of the Year for the sixth time in his career, and the Trojans finished 2006 with a 26-2 overall record after a last-second loss in the NCAA final. It was USC s second straight trip to the final, as Vavic had guided the Trojans to their third-ever NCAA Championship and a program-best 26-1 record in For his success in guiding USC to the NCAA crown in 2005, Vavic was named the National Men s Coach of the Year. His Trojans also claimed the 2005 MPSF Championship, and Vavic earned himself MPSF Coach of the Year honors as well. At 26-1, USC posted its most wins in history and broke another record by closing out the year on an 19-game winning streak. He and Williams were named National Coaches of the Year in 1998 after leading USC to its first-ever national championship. They also were named MPSF Co-Coaches of the Year in 1996 after leading USC to the conference title. In fact, in the season, Vavic did something no other coach has accomplished as his teams won three national championships. In addition to capturing the 1998 men s and 1999 women s titles, his 1999 men s club team won the Men s Senior National Club Championship. In 2003, Vavic pulled a coaching double sweep when he was named 2003 National and MPSF Coach of the Year for the men and 2004 National and MPSF Coach of the Year for the women. Vavic has been with the USC women s program since its inception in 1995, and the 2004 women s team became the first team in NCAA Championship history to go undefeated (29-0) during the regular season. USC s 25-3 overall mark in 2010 culminated in the women s program s third national championship and 13th straight 20-win season. And in 2013, the Women of Troy played the longest NCAA women s final in history, beating Stanford in triple sudden-death overtime to win USC s fourth National Championship. Overall, Vavic s career record on the women s side stands at (.769) in 19 seasons as head coach. Vavic earned his 300th career win with the Women of Troy in the third-place game of the 2007 NCAA Tournament on May 13, Vavic oversaw the women s water polo team s move from Division II in 1995 to Division I in In 1999, the USC women captured their first national championship. Since 1999 when the program was fully funded, Vavic s record is (.856). He has swept as National and MPSF Coach of the Year in 1999, 2004 and Vavic spent the 1990 season as an assistant men s coach at UCLA. Previously, he coached three seasons ( ) at Palos Verdes High, with two undefeated league seasons ( ). Vavic served as a U.S. assistant coach at the 1995 World University Games, and was the head coach of the team in He also served as interim head coach for Team USA at the 2013 UANA World Aquatic Championship Qualification Tournament.
