3 Meet the Head Coach Head Coach Elysce Tackmann Elysce Tackmann begins her second season as the head women s volleyball coach at Rhode Island College. In her first season at the helm in 2011, she guided the squad to a overall record and a 2-5 (sixth place) mark in the Little East Conference. The Anchorwomen qualified for the Little East Tournament for the third consecutive season, but were defeated in the first round by Keene State, 3-1, on Nov. 1 in the club s final match of the season. RIC was dominant at home, ending the year with an 11-2 record at The Murray Center. She joined the RIC staff after a three-year stint as the head women s volleyball coach at Anna Maria College. Under her tutelage, the Amcats received the Commonwealth Coast Conference s Team Sportsmanship Award in 2008 and 2010, while establishing the program record for wins in a season last fall. A native from Maui, Hawaii, Coach Tackmann was a two-year standout at East Providence Senior High School, where she was the starting setter for the Townies. Coach Tackmann led the team to two undefeated seasons (52-0) and two R.I. Div. I State Championships. In doing so, Tackmann earned First Team All-State, All-Division and All-Tournament Team selections as a senior in She also lettered in soccer, helping to lift East Providence to its first appearance in the State Championship match. During her high school career, she played for a number of different volleyball clubs, including Florida Gold Coast (16-1 s and 18-2 s teams), RI Blast (18-1 s teams) and Metrowest Juniors club team (18-1 s), earning recognition and winning tournaments throughout the United States. In 2003, she began her collegiate career on the women s volleyball team at Bryant University. That season, Bryant advanced all the way to the NCAA Div. II Women s Volleyball Sweet 16. From , Tackmann and the Bulldogs went undefeated in the Northeast-10 Conference, winning 37 straight matches. They became the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament Champions all three seasons and also grabbed the regular season championship in both 2003 and As a senior, Coach Tackmann was selected as the recipient of the Bryant University Bulldog Award, given to a student athlete who exemplifies leadership on and off the court. At the time of her graduation, she was ninth in matches played (153), 10th in aces (190), 13th in both serve percentage (.870) and digs (981) and ranked 17th in digs (981) in Bulldog history. Tackmann graduated from Bryant University in 2007 with a bachelor s degree in communication and a minor in psychology. Coach Tackmann is a current member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA), the New England Women's Volleyball Association (NEWVA), the Professional Association of Volleyball Officials, the Women's Sports Foundation and the New England Region Yankee Volleyball Organization. She played as a setter for Team New England of the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) in She resides in Warwick, Rhode Island 3
4 Meet the Assistant Coach Assistant Coach Kristen Johnson Kristen Johnson begins her second season as the assistant women s volleyball coach. She assists Head Coach Elysce Tackmann in all phases of the program including, recruiting, scouting, administering practice and match coaching. I am thrilled to be back in the Rhode Island College women s volleyball program, Johnson said. I had a great experience as a student-athlete and feel I have a lot to contribute. Tackmann added, I am extremely excited about working with Kristen. I think that with both of our athletic backgrounds, hard work, commitment and dedication, we will be extremely successful. She will be a great asset to the volleyball program. Johnson closed out her four-year career ( ) as an Anchorwoman having played in 270 games in 105 matches as a middle blocker. She totaled 242 kills,.066 hitting percentage (.90/game) and 151 blocks (.56/game). Johnson was 10th alltime at RIC in career blocks at the time of her graduation. As a senior in 2009, she played in 63 sets in 28 matches. She totaled 67 kills (1.06/game), a.146 hitting percentage and 59 blocks (.94/game). Johnson was tied for third on the team in blocks. As a junior in 2008, Johnson played in 109 sets in 31 matches. She totaled 109 kills (1.0/game) and 53 blocks (.49/game). Johnson was second on the team in blocks. As a sophomore in 2007, she played in 71 sets in 29 matches. She totaled 55 kills (.77), a.086 hitting percentage, 11 assists (.15/game), 18 digs (.25/game) and 26 blocks (.37/game). As a freshman in 2006, Johnson played in 27 sets in 17 matches, totaling 11 kills (.41/game), eight assists (.30/game), eight digs (.30/game) and 13 blocks (.48/game). She is a 2006 graduate of East Providence High School. She played three seasons of volleyball under Luis Carvalho, who later became her college coach at RIC, while with the Townies. Johnson graduated with a bachelor s degree in elementary education from Rhode Island College in She was a member of the Rhode Island College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. In addition to her coaching duties, Johnson is an elementary education teacher in both the East Providence and Pawtucket school systems. She is single and resides in East Providence, Rhode Island. 4
