Lourdes fell to Corban on the first day of pool play, but the Gray Wolves (27-6) rebounded in five sets against the tournament host, Morningside, to keep their hopes of a Friday bid alive. Romero already owns Park s single-season aces record, with 79 in 2014, but at 74 for the 2016 season, she s chasing her own record, now five away. Danna Gomes became the second player in school history with 1,300 assists in two different seasons, now at 1,301, sixth behind her own fifth-place mark of 1,325 from last season. With 38 assists, today, Gomes would move in to second place all-time, at Park, for career assists. Daniela Duarte s 22 digs Wednesday moved her Park career record to 1,735 digs. She is the only player in the 1,700 dig club in Park history. ABOUT LOURDES... Lourdes has the late match in the pool all three nights, and when the Pirates and Grey Wolves meet on Dec. 1 in Sioux City, it ll be the second meeting between the two schools after Park beat Lourdes in Columbia, on Sept. 3, in four sets. Lourdes is a team that hits for a high percentage,.242 as a team (20th, NAIA), and Ave Stout makes things difficult on opposing defenses with the team s top individual efficiency number, hitting.365 on the season. Two Grey Wolves average more than three kills per set, including team leader Molly Shonk, who averages 3.22, followed by Stephanie Ruffing s Lourdes is the second straight-to-sioux City team in the pool, last playing Nov. 12 in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference championship, a four-set win over Cornerstone. In all, the Grey Wolves have won their last six matches and 23 of their last 25 since the loss to Park in September, which is the only previous match between the two schools. REMATCH WITH LOURDES It s the third-straight year for Park with a rematch in pool play, and this season, it s a match against a team that had Park on the ropes through a set before the Pirates stormed back for a win. In the Sept. 3 contest, Lourdes won a lopsided first set in Columbia, beating the Pirates 25-15, before Park came back to win 26-24, 25-11, The Pirates turned to Romero to win that match, with 35 kills on 79 swings, while four players had double-digit digs, led by Duarte s 21. MATCH RECAP: PIRATES SURVIVE WITH FOUR-SET WIN OVER CORBAN Wendy Romero s 20 kills and 17 digs highlighted a trio of Park University double-doubles Wednesday night, as the seventh-ranked Pirates stayed alive, beating No. 23 Corban University in four sets 25-16, 23-25, 25-17, keeping Park s pool-play hopes alive at Sioux City s Tyson Events Center in the 2016 NAIA Volleyball National Championship. We knew that Corban was a good squad. We were in a battle and we had to play hard from the jump. That s what we did tonight, and we just survived, said Park coach Mike Talamantes. We had to play a lot smarter and we had to go with the smart shot tonight. Last night, we tried to power through everything, but we had to be smarter to keep this thing going. After a rough defensive outing the night before in a five-set loss to Morningside, Park (33-3) put four in NAIA Volleyball National Championship Nov. 29-Dec. 3 Sioux City, Iowa (Tyson Events Center) MidAmerica Nazarene Baker University Invitational Sept. 9 vs. Oklahoma City Sept. 9 at Baker Sept. 10 vs. Ottawa Sept. 10 vs. Graceland W, 3-2 Sept. 15 Sept. 16 Sept. 17 Sept. 23 Sept. 24 Sept. 30 Oct. 1 Oct. 4 Oct. 7 Oct. 8 at Hannibal-LaGrange * at Benedictine at MidAmerica Nazarene at Central Baptist * at Freed-Hardeman * Williams Baptist * Lyon * STLCOP * Lindenwood-Belleville * Baker * Ottawa University Triangular Oct. 15 vs. Friends Oct. 15 at Ottawa W, 3-1 Oct. 18 Oct. 20 Oct. 22 Oct. 26 Oct. 27 Nov. 3 W, 3-1 at Stephens * Columbia * vs. Vanguard (at Columbia) at Harris-Stowe * at Missouri Baptist * William Woods * American Midwest Conference Championship Nov. 8 Lyon Nov. 11 vs. William Woods Nov. 12 vs. Columbia L, 0-3 NAIA Volleyball National Championship Nov. 29 vs. Morningside Nov. 30 vs. Corban Dec. 1 vs. Lourdes L, 2-3 W, p.m. Home matches in Bold. * Denotes American Midwest Conference match.
2 2016 PARK UNIVERSITY WOMEN S VOLLEYBALL double digits, on its back row, led by senior libero Daniela Duarte, who came up with 22 digs in the match. We tried to bring more energy, especially on the back row, Duarte said. Coach always tells us don t think, to react, and we didn t overthink things tonight. We got the balls up so our offense could go to work. To work is exactly where the Pirates went on offense. Along with Romero s double-double, Paloma Bacellar had 10 kills and 16 digs, adding a team-best six blocks, while Salma Shahtout finished the night hitting.579, posting 12 kills and three blocks. The Pirates hit.242 and held Corban to.164, while Danna Gomes had another 50-plus night setting the ball, collecting 51 assists. Madison McClain had 38 assists for Corban, as the Warriors fell to 24-7 despite 20 kills for Amber Parker, who matched Romero and hit.269. The Pirates were able to jump in front early, outscoring the Warriors 10-5 over the first 15 points and expanding the lead to 11-5 when Bacellar scored. Shahtout later had the Pirates in front 18-9, but a 3-0 run for Corban kept the set in doubt, before Romero followed an error with a kill, winning the race to 20 points with a lead. That kill opened the flood gates for Romero, who had Park s next three points, all on kills, putting Park in front before Bacellar and Juliana Torres ended the set with kills, a win to give the Pirates a 1-0 match lead. A lead slipped away from the Pirates in the second, up before a 6-1 run pulled Corban in front 18-17, and a block by Alaina Gentili for the Warriors, stopping Torres, was the second of two kills to end the set, evening the match with a Corban win. The Pirates were able to go in front early in the third, though, up 10-7 on a kill for Sabrina Silva, and Park pulled away, up seven when Romero went away from the power arm, flipping a ball over the Warrior block to make it Park went on to win the set, 25-17, getting a ball-handling error on Parker, normally an attacker, after the Warriors were forced out of system, putting Park back in front by a set. The Pirates controlled nearly wire-to-wire in the fourth, although a pair of Warrior runs kept the set in doubt until Romero sent a missile off of the outstretched hands of a Corban defender to secure the match, Park had led by as many as eight, up 23-15, but the Pirates separated the set early, breaking a 9-all tie and building a 15-9 lead. MORNINGSIDE REWIND: MUSTANGS UPEND PIRATES IN FIVE Seventh-ranked Park University made its game plan known early Tuesday night against the host Morningside Mustangs at the NAIA Volleyball National Championship in Sioux City, Iowa, but 34 kills from Wendy Romero weren t enough at the Tyson Events Center, as the Pirates fell in five sets to begin play in Pool G 25-23, 17-25, 19-25, 25-21, Morningside (20-13) registered 11 blocks on the night, including seven for Brittni Olson. Romero took 78 swings, with only 10 errors, hitting.308. Gomes finished with a double-double, for Park, adding 19 digs to her match-high 54 assists, and Romero also had a double-double with 17 digs. Silva (10 kills) and Bacellar (11 kills) joined Romero in double figures, and for Morningside, Buyert and Vande Stouwe had 12 kills each. Callie Alberico had a Mustang double-double with 51 assists and 21 digs, one of four in double digits on defense NUMERICAL ROSTER Player Cl. Pos. Ht.
