6 HEAD COACH JEFF TAMBRONI Eighth Year Hobart '92 Career Record: (.668) / 17 Seasons At Penn State: (.577) / Seven Season 2009 USILA DI COACH OF THE YEAR 2011 CAA CO-COACH OF THE YEAR 2013 CAA COACH OF THE YEAR 2014 U.S. MEN'S NATIONAL TEAM ASSISTANT COACH HALL OF FAME (CLASS OF '18) Jeff Tambroni, who is in his eighth season State in 2018, has a record, and a record at the helm of the Nittany Lion squad. Tambroni has led the Nittany Lions to the NCAA Tournament in 2013 and Tambroni, one of the sport s most decorated coaches, enters the 2018 season ninth among all active Division I coaches in career win percentage. Tambroni led the Nittany Lions to a 12-4 record, just the seventh doubledigit win season, and only the second in the last 20 seasons (2013, 2017). Penn State set a program record, opening the season with a 10-0 record for the best start in school history. The 10th win highlighted the streak as Penn State took down No. 5 Ohio State, 9-4, to earn just the eighth victory in program history over a top-five team. Penn State also earned their first winning record in Big Ten play, going 3-2. Tambroni saw three earn USILA All-America honorable mention honors, while Nick Aponte earned a USILA Scholar All-America honor. Penn State s 2013 campaign saw Tambroni lead Penn State to one of the greatest seasons in program history while celebrating its 100th season. The Nittany Lions set a record for wins (12) and earned the program s first outright regular season conference title by sweeping the CAA with a 6-0 record. PSU rattled off ten-straight wins from March through May to earn the school s third NCAA bid and first chance to host an NCAA tournament game. The program s 12 wins in 2017 tied the record. There have been four USILA Scholar All-America honorees under Tambroni and 14 USILA All-Americans during his time State. Tambroni was named USILA Division I Coach of the Year following the 2009 season while at Cornell and was tabbed the 2007 and 2009 Field Turf/NCAA Division I Coach of the Year. Tambroni was also the 2004 and 2009 Ithaca Journal Male Coach of the Year and a three-time National Coach of the Week. While at Cornell, Tambroni became the 10th-fastest coach to reach the 100- win mark when he accomplished the feat in his 134th career game in March During his tenure, his players earned 37 first-team All-Ivy honors, including five Ivy League awards, and three conference Rookie of the Year selections. Also, 39 players garnered All-America recognition. A 1992 graduate, Tambroni earned his bachelor s degree in American studies. He claimed first-team All-America honors as a senior and was twice named a second-team All-American ( ). The MVP of the 1990 NCAA title game, Tambroni helped lead the team to back-to-back NCAA championships ( ) and left Hobart tied for seventh on the school s all-time scoring list with 202 points, and currently sits in eighth. Before embarking upon his collegiate coaching career, Tambroni coached the Heaton Mersey Lacrosse Club of the English Lacrosse Union for one year and served as a visiting coach for the Czech-American Lacrosse Foundation in Prague in the summer of QUAD CORE OF CAPTAINS The 2018 Nittany Lion squad will be led by senior middies Ryan Keenan, Tanner Peck, and Tripp Traynor, and redshirt junior defender Mike Aronow. When asked about their leadership skills, Head Coach Jeff Tambroni mentioned how each was different, and together they provided a well-rounded leadership core. The quartet has helped the Nittany Lions program come from a 5-9 record in their freshman season to an improved 12-4, and a No. 1 ranking in the national poll in their junior year, and will look to build upon in #BRICKSQUAD MENTALITY The blue-collar work ethic of Penn State men s lacrosse has been a mainstay under Coach Jeff Tambroni, and even using a brick to symbolize what that means has been in play for a few years, but following the 2017 season, the now-graduated seniors of 2017 gave Tambroni a brick with the engraving Leave it better than you found it... Class of We wanted an identity piece, Tambroni said. We wanted our program to think about a symbol more visually instead of just conversations with our guys about what we want it to look like. Also, there is a second brick that is passed around by the team to the player with the most brick mentality every week. The player who holds the brick chooses who deserves the brick the following week, and they pass the actual brick on to the next deserving player. PRESEASON RECOGNITION The Trio of juniors Chris Sabia and Grant Ament and sophomore Gerard Arceri were named to the USILA Preseason DI Player of the Year Watch List. They were also named as Penn State s Big Ten Players to Watch. Sabia was named an Inside Lacrosse Preseason Second Team All-America honoree, while Arceri was named to the Third Team and Amernt earned Honorable Mention. NITTANY LIONS BUILDING IN DEPTH The Nittany Lions present a menacing starting lineup on both attack and defense that can cause problems for many teams. Beyond their starters though, there are a lot of question marks on both sides of the ball at an early point in the season. The challenge for Tambroni and his staff is motivating the rest of the team to step up and make meaningful contributions. Inevitably, every student-athlete wants to play, everybody wants to contribute on game day because they work so hard, Tambroni said. The on us falls on Jeff Tambroni. It s my job to make sure there s a grander purpose than coming in here and playing. There s got to be a reason why these guys come here. Although the message starts with the coaching staff, it is then on the team to uphold it in the locker room and on the field. NITTANY LIONS SHIFTING FOCUS INWARD Every Monday the coaching staff meets with the team to reflect on their individual performances from the weekend. During this week s session, the Nittany Lions were eager to add to the conversation and bring focus to the areas they feel they need to improve upon. There were several decent plays that were made throughout the course of the game, we just didn t connect enough of them, Penn State head coach Jeff Tambroni said. It was tough. When we talked to our guys about things that needed to be worked on, plenty of hands went up, so it was nice to see our guys have a decent understanding about what needs to be done this week. Although the team fell short executing plays successfully throughout the game, one positive to emerge was their consistent level of hard work. Throughout several momentum shifts, the Nittany Lions refused to give up or deviate from their style of blue-collar lacrosse. Tambroni and his wife, Michelle, have three daughters, Carissa, Madison, and Ella. Michelle played field hockey State from and earned All-America honors as a senior.

7 LAST TIME OUT The Nittany Lions were looking for a signature win on the season, and a win that would elevate them in Big Ten play. That came on Saturday as Penn State used a balanced offense, and a few spectacular plays to take down Johns Hopkins, and improve their record to 8-4, 2-1 in Big Ten play. The Blue Jays would start the game, going up 2-1, with just five minutes to play, but Penn State would go on a four-goal streak as Mac O Keefe and Kevin Hill would each find the back of the cage twice. With just 45-seconds left to play, JHU would get on the board one more time in the opening period. Penn State continued to build on their offensive momentum as the scored three straight goals to start the second quarter. Freshman Cole Willard would snipe one in from distance as Mac O Keefe found the rookie for the score. O Keefe would then find the back of the cage himself as freshman Bobby Burns dished the rock for the score. The third Penn State goal came from another freshman as Brian Townsend made a great cut to the front of the cage, and Nick Spillane found the freshman for his fourth dime. Johns Hopkins would get one back, but another two-goal run by the Nittany Lions gave Penn State a 10-4 lead before the Blue Jays would grab one more before the break. The Nittany Lions found success at the face-off x in the first half as sophomore Gerard Arceri battled through injury, and dominated the opening quarter to go eight of nine, and would finish the half, Out of the break, Arceri would not take a face in the third after getting hit in the closing minutes of the first half. Penn State would look to its reserves to help. While Johns Hopkins went 4-6 at the face in the third, and close the gap by opening the third quarter on a 3-1 run, was the final seconds of the third that were the highlight. Penn State would gain possession with 1:31 left to play and would possess until Nick Spillane would find the back of the net with 6.7 left. On the ensuing face, sophomore Nick McEvoy would win the face-off on a JHU violation, and on the whistle, the middie would dodge his way through the Blue Jay defenders and snipe just his third goal of the season with just 1.1 left of the clock. Penn State took a 13-8 lead into the final quarter of action. The fourth quarter was all Johns Hopkins as they out-scored Penn State, 4-1, but it was the one goal for Penn State that was critical. Senior captain Ryan Keenan would find the back of the cage on an unassisted dodge to right off the crease for the score at the 7:32 mark in the fourth. As the clock wound down, JHU would continue to pressure as two of their four fourth-quarter goals came with less than seven minutes left to play, but it would be three huge saves by Colby Kneese in the final three minutes, including a spectacular kick save with just 49 seconds left that sealed the game for Penn State as the sophomore goalie got his foot behind the shot, and the ball careened into the air, and Kneese scooped it up and Penn State successfully cleared the ball and maintained possession until time expired. Penn State earned their first win over Johns Hopkins for a now 1-9 all-time record against the Blue Jays behind a seven-point performance from junior Nick Spillane. The attackman registered a tied career-best five assists, adding two goals. Mac O Keefe finished the day with three goals and an assist, while junior Kevin Hill added three goals as well. Senior Ryan Keenen scored the opening and the closing goal for Penn State and the Nittany Lions also saw Dylan Foulds, Brian Townsend, Nick McEvoy, and Cole Willard find the back of the cage. Townsend and McEvoy also added assist each to their stat lines, while Robby Black and Bobby Burns each added assists as well. The Nittany Lions saw Colby Kneese register 14 saves and add a ground ball. At the x, Gerard Arceri went 16-23, adding nine ground balls, while McEvoy went 2-4, and added one ground ball. ARCERI, SPILLANE HONORED The Penn State men s lacrosse program saw sophomore Gerard Arceri earn his sixth Big Ten Specialist of the Week honor, announced by the league office on Tuesday, and junior Nick Spillane be honored by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association for their gutsy performances in the Nittany Lions win over then-no. 5 Johns Hopkins. After leaving the Maryland game late in the fourth quarter with a leg injury, it was unclear if Arceri would play Saturday afternoon against the Blue Jays. He s been saying he s going to play since Sunday night, there was never a doubt in that young man s mind, Tambroni said following Saturday s big win. Our trainers had a different opinion and we did as well, but he proved every one of us wrong and got out there and had the performance of a lifetime. The face-off specialist played through the leg injury and opened the game going 8-9 at the X in the first quarter. For the entirety of the game, Arceri went 16-23, adding nine ground balls, despite missing the whole third quarter after taking a big hit late in the second period. Spillane was the quarterback of the Penn State offense that took down No. 5 Johns Hopkins for the first time in program history. The attackman dished out five assists, tying a career high, and then added two goals of his own to tie his personal best for points in a single game. He also added two ground balls. AMENT, ARCERI NAMED TO TEWAARATON WATCHLIST Junior Grant Ament was named to the first edition of the Tewaraaton Watchlist. The list includes the top players across all three divisions of NCAA lacrosse and highlights the early contenders for the 2018 Tewaaraton Award. Ament, who has yet to play a game in the 2018 season, recorded 30 goals and 30 assists in 2017 to lead the Nittany Lions. Arceri was named to the watchlist after the first round of additions. Arceri is arguably one of the top three faceoff guys in the nation, and ranks in the top three in faceoff specific categories. (SEE NCAA RANKING PAGE) KNEESE, CARDILE EARN MLAX WEEKLY HONORS Sophomores Colby Kneese and Nick Cardile honored by the Big Ten on Tuesday afternoon as Kneese was named Specialist of the Week, and Cardile was named Defensive Player of the Week for their performances against Ohio State. Kneese was also named to the United State Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Team of the Week. Kneese was the catalyst to the Penn State 12-4 win on Saturday as he made a season-high 16 saves, 11 of which came in the first half and helped stifle the Buckeye offense, which included shutting them out in the first and fourth quarters. Kneese finished with an 80.0-percent save percentage. He also added five ground balls. Cardile was also instrumental in the Nittany Lions defense that held the Buckeyes to just four goals. The long-stick middie led the team with two caused turnovers and added four ground balls to his performance. ARCERI NAMED BIG TEN SPECIALIST OF THE WEEK X5 (2/20, 2/27, 3/6, 3/13, 3/20) Penn State men s lacrosse sophomore Gerard Arceri earned his fifth consecutive Big Ten Specialist of the Week honor. Against Fairfield, Arceri went 20 of 25 at the face-off x, adding 17 ground balls to his stat line. Against Furman, Arceri won face-off attempts, with an impressive.905 winning percentage. He also scooped up a career-high 18 ground balls in the affair, while scoring a goal as well. His effort helped Penn State to a 16-5 victory. Matt Donnelly tacked on his first goal of the season, and Jared Nugent added one for the Wildcats. Villanova lost keeper Matt Barrett at the 8:07 mark after the goalie took a big hit when he was out of the crease Q Keenan recorded his third goal just two minutes into the second quarter of action, but the Wildcats were quick to tie it back at 4-all just 30-seconds later. Villanova would grab their first lead of the game when Christian Cuccinello tagged the back of the net with his third goal. Jack Kelly of Penn State put in his first career goal just seconds later, evening it back up at 5. Midway through the second, Villanova again grabbed the lead and would hold the lead for a minute before Kelly sniped his second of the afternoon. Hill and O Keefe tacked on two during the run, while Keenan dished out both of his dimes. PSU Q A big swing in momentum took place in the fourth as the Wildcats scored two goals in the first two minutes of action. RMU responded when Eddie Smith found the back of the cage at the 7:27 mark, but just 19 seconds later Chris Sabia tilted the score back in favor of the hosts 2-1 after his third tally of the season. The Colonials were quick to respond as Jimmy Perkins potted the equalizer at 6:43 before Kevin Hill s 10th of the season at 3:02 gave the Nittany Lions the 3-2 lead at the end of the first stanza. 2Q The Nittany Lions wasted little time opening the second quarter as off the draw Gerard Arceri raced down the field and found the twine at 14:48 and Nick Spillane finished off a Matt Donnelly offering at 12:01 for the 5-2 margin. PJ Dick of Pittsburgh will construct the estimated $8.4 million project. In May 2017, Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics announced $3.55 million in gifts for a new lacrosse stadium on the University Park campus. Ken Panzer, a 1982 Penn State graduate, and his long-time business partner at Douglas Emmett, Jordan Kaplan, committed a gift of $3.55 million to launch construction that will transform the current field into a world-class stadium. A former co-captain of the Penn State men s lacrosse team, Panzer has a long-standing history of giving to the Nittany Lions program. Additional Penn State lacrosse alumni and donors made gifts for the venue totaling $2 million, bringing the philanthropy total for the project to $5.6 million. The addition of men s and women s lacrosse to the Big Ten Conference in 2015 has shifted the landscape of Division I lacrosse, elevating the Penn State lacrosse programs competitiveness and national exposure. Both of the men s and women s programs, led by head coaches Jeff Tambroni and Missy Doherty, respectively, were ranked in the Top 10 nationally in the 2017 season and participated in their NCAA championships, with the women s team advancing to the national semifinals for the second consecutive year. Panzer Stadium will be one of the top lacrosse facilities in the nation and will enable Penn State to host a variety of events, including the Big Ten Tournament and NCAA Championship preliminary rounds and youth lacrosse events. Panzer Stadium, which will be constructed in the same location as the Penn State Lacrosse Field, will include the following features and capabilities: Expanded stadium-style seating for up to 1,300, significantly growing the permanent seating capacity and options available to fans. Greater comfort and convenience for fans with permanent concessions, more accessible bathrooms and a ticket office. A press box above the new seating with full broadcasting capabilities for television and radio facilitating coverage on the Big Ten Network and ESPN. A multi-purpose room overlooking the field to be used for a variety of lacrosse-related events. Panzer Stadium will help usher in Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics 20-year Facilities Master Plan, announced this past spring, and will build new, as well as revitalize, selected facilities across the University Park campus.
