5 ntering his third season at the helm, head coach Danny Sanchez still has the same goals for Cowgirl soccer as he did in his first Eseason, winning a Mountain West Conference Championship and taking Wyoming soccer to the next level. In 2010 the Cowgirls will look to improve from last year s overall mark and a record in the MWC. The Cowgirls advanced their way to the MWC Tournament in 2009 under Sanchez for the first time since This season, the loss of four seniors including four-year starter Emily Layton and second team all-conference member Emma Wilson will leave a void, but the Cowgirls have a wealth of young talent ready for the challenge. We feel really good about our returning players. Many of our freshmen last fall played significant minutes and roles and we expect them to continue to develop, said Cowgirl Head Coach Danny Sanchez. The Cowgirls will return five of their eight goal scorers from last year. Last year s leader in goals scored was newcomer Carmen Blume. Blume led the team with four goals and played in 19 games. Jackson, Wyo. senior Nicole Rice was tied for second in goals, but will miss the 2010 season due to injury, with other newcomers Olivia Mohtadi and Mara Cosgrove. The Cowgirls will have three more seniors in the offensive attack. Katie Amsberry, Jules Candelaria, Chelsea Coddington and Jerrica DiVencen- zo will enter their last season as CARMEN Cowgirls. Last year Candelaria, Cod- BLUME dington and DiVencenzo combined to start in all but two games. Nicole Rice had a breakout junior season that led to All-MWC accolades, however, she will miss the 2010 season with a knee injury, said Sanchez. We feel that we have returning players and some incoming freshmen that can fill the void. We are excited about our options this fall, added Sanchez. The UW defense continued to be outstanding a year ago anchored by goalkeeper Courtney Merkle. Merkle s single season goal against average of 1.00 ranks second in school history. With Merkle in goal, senior Bostyn Burger will continue to be the main back in the Cowgirls defense along with junior Alison Masumiya and sophomore Mara Cosgrove. We were solid in the back throughout the 2009 season and although we lost All-MWC defender Emma Wilson, we feel that we can be even better in There are starting spots to be had along the backline and competition will be wide open in preseason, said Sanchez. A strong performance in the spring and a four game tour of Europe has Sanchez and the team well prepared for their difficult 2010 schedule which includes matches against four teams that made the 2009 NCAA Tournament. Wyoming will play 19 regular season games in total and ten at the home of Cowgirl soccer, the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex. The first regular season match will be an early test against rival Northern Colorado in the annual Front Range Derby. The schedule doesn t get any easier after UNC with a road match against the Colorado Buffaloes, but the Cowgirls will return home for a three game home stretch with games against Buffalo, Idaho and Colorado College. Other non-conference games include Boise State and New Mexico State at home while the Cowgirls will play Kennesaw State, Montana, Eastern Washington, Creighton and Drake on the road. Cowgirl Soccer will be tested in preconference play. After four of five at home, we will be on the road for five straight. This will be good indicator of where we are as a team and will make us tougher as we head into MWC play, added Sanchez. The start of conference play will come against an NCAA Tournament team from 2009 in BYU in Laramie on Oct. 2. The next three MWC games for Wyoming soccer will be on the road with matches against Utah, UNLV and San Diego State. The 2010 regular CHELSEA CODDINGTON season will close out with three consecutive home games against TCU, New Mexico and Air Force Season Outlook As I have said before the MWC is getting stronger each year. Most of the best and most dynamic players are returning, so we will have to pick up our play to continue moving our program forward, added Sanchez. Following is a position by position look at the Cowgirl Line-up: Forwards This season the Cowgirls will again be anchored by youth at the forward position. Last season Rice was second in the group in goals scored with three and took the second most shots on the team in Carmen Blume led the Cowgirls in scoring, she and fellow sophomore Olivia Mohtadi will lead the attack for the Cowgirl forwards. Blume had four goals in 2009 and added three assists while Mohtadi was tied for second on the team with three goals last season. Senior Katie Amsberry played in 13 games for the Cowgirls last year and will provide excellent depth along with redshirt-sophomore Cassie Sheffield. Incoming freshmen Ellen McCormick, Nahiomy Ortiz and Sara Paul will also look to make early impacts for the Cowgirls this season. With Nicole out, we have brought in some quality freshmen that we feel can have an immediate impact on our program. We should be more dynamic in the attack and we have the pieces to get the job done, said Sanchez. Midfielders Wyoming soccer looks to be very strong and experienced in the midfield with four seniors leading the way. Jerrica DiVincenzo, Chelsea Coddington, Jules Candelaria have combined to start in 128 games at UW. Coddington added her first career goal last season while DiVincenzo and Candelaira started in all 20 games. Coming off an injury, redshirt junior Kayla Davis and sophomores Shalayne Janis and Jenny son add to the midfield depth. Freshman John- Liz O Reilly from St. Clair, Australia will also give the Cowgirls quality minutes. Jerrica DiVincenzo and Kayla Davis will miss the start of the season while recovering from injuries, so we are looking for leadership from Jules Candelaria and for some of our other returning players to fill the void, said Sanchez. Many of our players are versatile enough to play numerous roles, so one again, preseason will go a long way to sort out starting spots, added Sanchez. JULES CANDELARIA Defenders The key returner for the Cowgirls in the backfield will be senior Bostyn Burger. A captain from last season, Burger started in 18 games for the Cowgirls and anchored the defense to an opponent goal against average of Sophomore Mara Cosgrove showed her versatility on the field last year by playing as a back, but added three goals last season. Junior Allison Masumiya continued to be a key member of the Cowgirl defense while sophomore Sydney Jones gave the Cowgirls quality minutes. Laramie, Wyo. native Makenzie Meade and Julie Vande Berg will provide the backfield will depth as freshmen. The backline will be anchored by center backs Bostyn Burger and Mara Cosgrove, said Sanchez. Allison Masumiya has been a two year starter in the back, but will see time in the midfield this season. Both outside back positions are up for grabs this fall and we have numerous players that we feel can fill those spots, added Sanchez. Goalkeepers Last season Courtney Merkle won the starting job at goalkeeper for the Cowgirls and did not disappoint as a freshman. Merkle recorded a goal against average of 1.00 in over 1,801 minutes and shutout five opponents. Merkle s single season GAA placed second in school history and ranked fourth in the conference in shutouts. Fellow sophomore Meagan Burke is coming off a strong performance in goal this past spring. Burke saw action in two games in 2009 as well. Incoming freshman Carmen McDermott will also compete for the starting job for the Cowgirls. Goalkeeping will be our deepest position in Courtney (Merkle) had a very solid freshmen campaign, but will be pushed hard by two other quality goalkeepers. Meagan had a breakout spring and Carmen has all the tools to step into a starting role, concluded Sanchez. Wyoming Soccer 3

30 Academics A student-athlete has time commitments and academic requirements that no other college student has to manage. Balancing practices, road trips, and contests with tests, papers, and classes isn t easy. But a student-athlete isn t alone in this endeavor! The Office of Academic Support in Athletics (OAS) exists solely to help you on your journey through college athletics. Simply put, our mission is to give you all the academic support you need so you can meet your goal of earning the best college education possible while participating in the sport you love. Whether it be helping you find that tutor for the big Math exam, or to help you pick the right classes to add a Biology Minor, or just to talk about the big match coming up; the OAS strives to help you succeed. Most importantly, the OAS helps to bridge your communication with professors and deans as well as to help inform you of NCAA academic eligibility rules. We have an excellent relationship with University administration, faculty and deans and work to keep them aware of student-athlete road trips and contests. The academic support staff visits regularly with every student-athlete to be certain they are making progress toward their degree and assists them with understanding and meeting NCAA academic standards. Our coordinators also provide support on matters such as registration, degree planning and compliance with University of Wyoming and Mountain West Conference policies and procedures. A qualified staff of tutors and mentors assist students in clarifying their study material and, in the case of travel, help students catch up on what material was missed. In addition to the tutorial program, attention is given to each individual in the development of their class schedule. All UW student-athletes must take a minimum of twelve hours of classes each semester, which directly apply to their chosen degree, and appropriate scheduling is a critical priority. Study skills assistance is available for those who need special help in areas including test preparation, note taking and time-management techniques. Finally, each student-athlete s academic progress is closely monitored during the semester for such things as attendance, current grade and class participation. Steps are taken to address deficiencies identified by student-athlete progress reports on an individual basis. 2. Career Development The purpose of obtaining a college education is to prepare an individual for meaningful employment following graduation. Needless to say, the act of choosing a useful major is indeed a challenging task considering the multitude of possibilities. Career counseling is available to assist student-athletes in the very important process of selecting a major that will lead to a desired career. The Office of Academic Support continues to establish a career network that will assist students secure employment after graduation. 3. Personal Growth and Development The OAS offers various speakers, presentations, and training sessions through the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills program, which emphasizes the importance of the entire student-athlete. 31 Wyoming Soccer Facilities The Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex is one of the most attractive soccer complexes in the nation. It is located a block east of the Wyoming Athletics Department, has a view of the beautiful Laramie Mountain Range to the East and is surrounded by mature pine trees. The complex seats 1,500 fans for soccer as well as for track and field. The complex is named for Louis S. Madrid, a former Wyoming track letterman who competed for the Cowboys from 1952 through Thanks to a generous gift from the Madrid estate, as well as contributions from families and fans honoring eight Wyoming track athletes that were tragically killed in a 2001 car accident, a track was constructed around the perimeter of the soccer field in the summer of The track, named the Memorial Eight Track, is named in memory of those eight track athletes. Beginning in the fall of 2006, the Louis S. Madrid Complex became the outdoor home to the Wyoming track and field team. The Madrid Complex has been friendly to the Cowgirl soccer team as they have won over 74 percent of their home games over the past three years. The Cowgirls have also excelled in conference play, going since The Cowgirl soccer team now has the luxury of an indoor practice facility. In the fall of 2007, construction was completed Wyoming s new Indoor Practice Facility, located adjacent to Jonah Field at War Memorial Stadium. The field is mostly used by the Wyoming football and soccer teams but ultimately benefits all student athletes at Wyoming. The facility was constructed at a cost of $11 million, and includes approximately 80,000 square feet of practice area. The field is covered with Desso Challenge Pro 60, a state of the art artificial surface which was also installed at Jonah Field at War Memorial Stadium in the summer of Wyoming Soccer 29

32 UW Traditions RAGTIME COWBOY JOE The familiar fi ght song of the University of Wyoming athletics teams is Ragtime Cowboy Joe. This song is performed by the band as UW teams enter the playing surface, following a score or big play, and to fi re up the fans. The Cowboy and Cowgirl student-athletes traditionally sing this following each Wyoming victory. RAGTIME COWBOY JOE He always sings raggy music to the cattle as he swings back and forward in the saddle, on a horse - a pretty good horse! He s got a syncopated gaiter, and you ought to hear the meter to the roar of his repeater; how they run - yes run! - when they hear that he s a-comin, cause the western folks all know, he s a high-falootin, rootin, tootin, son of a gun from ol Wyoming, Ragtime Cowboy, Talk about your Cowboy, Ragtime Cowboy Joe. THE STAMPEDE The Stampede is the offi cial athletics fan club for University of Wyoming students. The Stampede is one BIG fan club for all 17 NCAA Division I sports at the University of Wyoming. The Stampede leads Wyoming fans in spirit, tradition and passion for Wyoming Athletics. Members of the Stampede receive multiple benefi ts, and as a student at UW, The Stampede is the best way to become involved in Wyoming Athletics. COWBOY NICKNAME The nickname Cowboys was applied to Wyoming athletic teams as early as two years before the fi rst offi cial football game. The story is that the Wyoming pick-up football team appealed to a 220 pound cowpuncher, Fred Bush, for help in a game against the Cheyenne Soldiers. Bush signed up for a course or two and came out for the team. When he trotted onto the fi eld decked out in a checkered shirt and Cowboy hat, someone yelled, Hey, look at the Cowboy! Since many of the members of the team were also ex-cowboys, the name stuck. When women s sports were added at UW, the nickname of Cowgirls was applied to those squads. COWBOY JOE PONY Cowboy Joe IV, a fourth generation Wyoming mascot, trots around War Memorial Stadium after each Cowboy touchdown, a tradition which started in 1950 when the Farthing Family of Cheyenne made a generous donation of a young pony to become Wyoming s mascot. Cowboy Joe also represents UW in parades around the region, appears in Tailgate Park on football game days and leads the band and team in the pre-game Cowboy Walk. This beautiful little pony is very popular with Cowboy & Cowgirl fans of all ages. 30 Wyoming Soccer

33 SPIRIT SQUADS UW Traditions The primary purpose of Wyoming s Spirit Squads is to support the Cowboys and Cowgirls, and to serve as public relations ambassadors for the University of Wyoming. The UW cheer and pom squads work hard to get the crowd involved, lead cheers, entertain, and to boost the level of fan excitement and support to new extremes. In addition to their game-day involvement at UW Athletics contests, Wyoming Spirit Squad members also make numerous appearances at university activities, functions, programs, charitable and public events. Cowboy and Cowgirl sports are fl ying high and the Wyoming Spirit Squads are leading the way. PISTOL PETE Pistol Pete is a UW student mascot who works alongside the Wyoming Spirit Squads, encouraging the crowd and getting fans involved in the game. WESTERN THUNDER MARCHING BAND The University of Wyoming Marching Band - Western Thunder - features musicians from nearly every major on campus, who perform for thousands of football fans each year at home and road Cowboy football games. The Wyoming Pep Band plays at numerous other UW sporting events. UW S LOGO - STEAMBOAT One of the nation s best, and most distinctive logos, the image on Wyoming s uniforms depicts a cowboy riding a bucking horse. This symbol has been a part of the University of Wyoming Athletics Department since the early 1920 s, when UW Equipment Manger Deane Hunton obtained a photograph of a cowboy, Guy Holt, riding the world famous bucking horse Steamboat. Hunton had the photo made into a logo, which was then utilized by UW athletic teams. While there are differing opinions on exactly which horse and rider is depicted on all of UW s athletic uniforms today, it is the symbol that is important. The bucking horse and rider represents the toughness, and the never-say-die spirit that is Wyoming. A statue honoring the symbol called Fanning a Twister, was erected at the north entrance of UW s athletics facilities in BROWN AND GOLD COLORS The story behind the colors of the University of Wyoming dates back to In the spring of that year, the fi rst ever UW Alumni Banquet was held. Decorations for the banquet included Brown-Eyed Susans, a fl ower native of Southeastern Wyoming. The Alumni were so impressed with the colors (brown and yellow) and the beauty of the fl owers that they decided to select these colors as the offi cial school colors at UW. Currently, the colors are described as brown and gold. Wyoming Soccer 31

37 rroundings,...it's all of Wyoming. UW Campus Half Acre Gymnasium Arts & Sciences Building Spend some time here and you ll agree that much of UW s character is shaped by this great home on the range. Laramie, the location of the main campus, is a safe, friendly community of 30,000 people. Nestled between the Laramie and Snowy Range mountains in southeastern Wyoming, it s a beautiful, unspoiled place with a special life-style. The campus extends over 785 tree-shaded acres. There s an attractive mix of modern and traditional structures; many were built with native Wyoming sandstone. It s a place where the sun shines 320 days each year. It s hard to be gloomy here. When you view it from 7,200 feet, you see things more clearly. But it s not just a pretty place; it s also a place that works. Up-to-date facilities support the learning and research mission that makes UW special. There are classrooms with state-of-the art computer technology, laboratories with the latest equipment, excellent libraries, computer systems with universal Internet access, and a long list of premier research facilities both on campus and in the surrounding area. 38 Wyoming...Like No Place on Earth They say it s beauty is like no other, and you fall in love with its people. The Tetons and Snake River Wyoming, it is like no place on earth. Within it s boundaries is America s fi rst and largest national park, Yellowstone. The unbounding beauty there includes Old Faithful geyser and Yellowstone Lake, the world s largest highmountain lake. There is Yellowstone Falls, so aweinspiring, it ll take your breath away. There are over 260 different species of animals and birds located there. Wyoming s wonders seem to be unending. There is Grand Teton National Park, whose centerpiece is the spectacular Teton Mountain Range. There is Devil s Tower, America s fi rst national monument. There is the world s largest mineral hot springs located in Thermopolis. There is the beauty of Ten Sleep Canyon and a hundred other places. Devil's Tower National Monument For breathtaking beauty, Wyoming is unmatched. Its reputation brings millions of visitors to its borders each year. Plus, some of the best skiing in America can be found in Wyoming. Tourists and sportsmen can t wait to get here to enjoy the clean mountain air and limitless outdoor attractions. The history of the great American West can be heard whistling through the trees of Wyoming. Wyoming had an historic place in the taming of the West in the late 1800 s. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid were two of Wyoming s most famous citizens during the era of lawlessness. There remain plenty of reminders of an age that will live forever in American lore. Yellowstone Falls People are Wyoming s strongest resource. These folks are down to earth, friendly and helpful. And, oh how proud they are of their Cowboys and Cowgirls. Wyoming has some of the best fans in America. As their only four-year university, Wyoming folks are tremendously supportive of their teams. Yet, as down to earth as they are, many Wyomingites are on the cutting edge of politics, entertainment and business. Among some of the most famous are: former Vice President of the United States Dick Cheney; Dr. Jerry Buss, owner of the Los Angeles Lakers; Dean Conger, former chief photographer of the National Geographic Society; Curt Gowdy, the most decorated national sportscaster in history; Alan Simpson, former United States Senator; Gerry Spence, attorney and television personality; and General Pete Schoomaker, former U.S. Army Chief of Staff. For great people, great scenery and a great education, there is no place quite like Wyoming. 39 Laramie...the Clear Choice One of the best things about Laramie is its location between two beautiful mountain ranges. It s a place of blue skies and clean air. Much of the area surrounding Laramie is public National Forest land. That means great access! You can head for the nearby mountains and fi nd yourself on a hiking, biking or skiing trail within 15 minutes. There s also nearby rock climbing at the impressive Vedauwoo formations. You can be downhill skiing in the Snowy Range within 45 minutes. Laramie is convenient to the world-class skiing offered in Steamboat Springs and other Colorado resorts. For a different kind of fun, you can be in Denver within two and a half hours. There is an amazing array of culture throughout the area, plus the tremendous sports heritage of the Rockies, Broncos, Nuggets and Avalanche. With its colorful Western heritage, cultural activities and outstanding outdoor recreation, the Laramie area offers a unique fl avor that delights visitors from all over the world. Things to Check Out In Laramie: Rappel down a rock face at Vedauwoo Ski, mountain bike or hike the trails at Happy Jack Snowboard the slopes at the Snowy Range Ski Area Catch a trophy fish at Lake Hattie Wyoming Soccer 37

40 The Mountain West Conference From its inception in 1999, the Mountain West Conference has been committed to excellence in intercollegiate athletics, while promoting the academic missions of its member institutions. Progressive in its approach, the MWC continues to cultivate opportunities for student-athletes to compete at the highest level, while fostering academic achievement and sportsmanship. Now in its 12th year, the MWC has been assertive in its involvement with the NCAA governance structure and has taken a leadership role in the overall administration of intercollegiate athletics. The Mountain West Conference is noted for its geographic diversity. Some of the most beautiful terrain and landscapes in the nation can be found within Mountain West Conference boundaries, including the majestic Rocky Mountain range, which borders four MWC schools (Air Force, BYU, Colorado State and Utah). The high plains of Wyoming (elevation 7,220 feet the highest Division I campus in the nation) contrast with the desert city of Las Vegas (the fastest growing metropolitan area in the West) and the Pacific Ocean locale of San Diego State. The southwestern flavor of New Mexico complements the western heritage and culture of Fort Worth, Texas, home of the MWC s most recent member, TCU. The Mountain West Conference was conceived on May 26, 1998, when the presidents of eight institutions Air Force, BYU, Colorado State, New Mexico, San Diego State, UNLV, Utah and Wyoming decided to form a new NCAA Division I-A intercollegiate athletic conference. The split from the former 16-team conference re-established continuity and stability among the membership within the new league and signaled the continuation of its tradition-rich, long-standing athletic rivalries. Five of the MWC s eight original members have been conference rivals since the 1960s (BYU, Utah, New Mexico, Wyoming, Colorado State), while San Diego State (1978) and Air Force (1980) were longtime members as well. UNLV and TCU entered the fold in 1996 and the Rebels continued as one of the original eight institutions that formed the MWC in TCU rejoined the group with its first year of competition in the Mountain West in On June 17, 2010, Commissioner Craig Thompson announced the addition of Boise State University to the Mountain West Conference, effective July 1, Last season San Diego State and BYU each advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Aztecs earned the league s automatic bid after clinching their first MWC Tournament title, while the MWC regular-season champion Cougars make their 10th NCAA appearance in 11 years by virtue of an at-large invitation. 38 Wyoming Soccer
