5 2009 Coaching Staff Danny Sanchez (UCONN, 91) Cowgirl Soccer Head Coach Sanchez enters his second season as the head soccer coach at the University of Wyoming. In his first season at the helm, Sanchez led the Cowgirls to a record that was highlighted by two three game win streaks and a 1-0 victory over nationally ranked TCU. Wyoming s offense was strong in their eight victories out scoring their opponents The defense for the Cowgirls was also tough as Wyoming ranked fourth in the MWC in goals allowed (1.16) and tied for second in shutouts (7). Sanchez came to Wyoming after posting a (.901) record in six seasons as the head women s coach at Metro State College in Denver, Colo. He led the Roadrunners to the NCAA Division II National Championship in 2004 and During his time at Metro State, Sanchez was the 2004 NCAA Division II National Coach of the Year, the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Coach of the Year all six seasons. He was also a four-time National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Midwest Region Coach of the Year. In his six seasons at Metro State, the Roadrunners won the RMAC Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament every year. They also won five Midwest Region Championships. In addition to its 2004 and 2006 National Championships, Metro State reached the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament three times (2002, `04 and `06) and advanced to the Elite Eight five times. At one point, Metro State won a Division II record 61 consecutive home games, as well as 59 consecutive overall games. Metro State produced two Division II National Players of the Year and 14 NSCAA All-Americans in Sanchez s tenure. Sanchez oversaw the Metro State men s Program from and helped lead the Roadrunner men to the 2007 RMAC Championship and to the NCAA Tournament in 2006 and Prior to coaching at Metro State, Sanchez served as the head men s and women s soccer coach at Mesa Community College in Mesa, Ariz. from At Mesa, he led the women s team to a (.858) overall record and the men to a (.716) mark. The women won four National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region I Championships and five Arizona Community College Athletic Conference (ACCAC) Championships. In 2001, he was the ACCAC and NJCAA Region I Men s and Women s Coach of the Year, as well as the NSCAA Junior College Central Region Coach of the Year. He also won the NJCAA Region I Women s Coach of the Year award in 1996 and Mesa produced 12 All-Americans in Sanchez s time with the program. Sanchez has been very active in coaching around the Rocky Mountain region. He has served as a staff coach and licensing instructor for the Colorado State Youth Soccer Association. He is a US Youth Soccer Region IV Staff Coach. Sanchez holds a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) A License, a USSF National Youth License, an NSCAA Advanced National Diploma and a KNVB Dutch Advanced Certificate. After beginning his collegiate career at Mesa Community College, Sanchez moved on to the University of Connecticut and led the Huskies to the 1989 Big East Championship and a NCAA Tournament birth. He ranked in the New England Region s top 10 in scoring in Following his collegiate career, he played in the Western Soccer League for the Arizona Condors and in the U.S.I.S.L. for the Arizona Cotton. Sanchez earned a bachelor s degree in economics from the University of Connecticut in He and his wife, Beth, have two sons Cole (10) and Drew (7). Kim Whisenant (North Carolina State, 96) Cowgirl Soccer Assistant Coach Kim Whisenant enters her seventh season as a Wyoming soccer assistant coach. She returned to Wyoming in 2004 for a second tenure as assistant coach, as she was also a coach at UW during the 1999 and 2000 seasons. In her first season back with the Cowgirls, she helped guide UW to the second best finish in school history as they finished with a record of and placed a record four players on the Mountain West Conference first and second teams. In her second season, the Cowgirls finished 9-7-3, the best winning percentage in school history, and placed two players on the MWC All-Conference teams. In 2006 she helped lead the Cowgirls to a record. Whisenant spent the 2001 and 2002 seasons as an assistant coach at Tulane University. While with Tulane, she helped guide the Green Wave to their first winning season in six years as they went 9-8 in Before initially joining the Cowgirl staff in 1999, Whisenant served as a graduate assistant coach at East Tennessee State University, under former UW head coach Anne Moore, during the 1997 and 1998 seasons. Whisenant played four seasons at North Carolina State where she helped lead the Wolfpack to three NCAA tournament appearances. During her senior season, North Carolina State reached the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament and was at one time ranked as high as sixth nationally. Following college, she played in the U.S.W.I.S.L for the Baltimore Lady Bays, the Maryland Pride and the Fort Collins Force. Whisenant earned her bachelor s degree in communication from North Carolina State in She holds an Advanced National Diploma from the National Soccer Coaches Association and an USSF A license from the United States Soccer Federation. The former Kim Murphy is married to UW Associate Athletics Director Matt Whisenant. The couple has a son, Landon Thomas (5), and daughter Chloe Ann (3). Jason Green (Ottawa, 03) Cowgirl Soccer Assistant Coach Jason Green will be entering his second season as a Wyoming soccer assistant coach. This will be Jason s second tenure under Sanchez, the first coming at Mesa Community College in Mesa, Ariz. Green and Sanchez also worked together on a number of club teams and summer camps as well. Jason has had two high school head coaching jobs, the first at Skyline High School in Mesa, AZ, where he was named Region Coach of the Year and the second at Chandler High School in Chandler, AZ where he was also named Region Coach of the Year and his team won three straight NSCAA National Academic Awards. In his 12 year coaching career in college, high school and club soccer, Green has coached five state championship teams, six region championship teams, four district championship teams and five conference championship teams. Jason holds a United States Soccer Federation B License and has also attended The Manchester United Coaches Symposium. Green started his college playing career at Mesa Community College under Sanchez where they were ranked as high as second in the nation. He continued his collegiate career at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Ariz. At GCU, Jason helped lead the team to as high as second in the nation and to the championship game in the CCAA tournament. He earned his bachelor s degree in Physical Education from Ottawa University, in Phoenix, in 2003 and completed his Master s Degree in Physical Education from Arizona State University in 2008.

6 A Look at the Cowgirls 08 Season The Cowgirl Soccer team finished the 2008 season with an overall record of , 2-5 in conference play which placed them in seventh in the Mountain West Conference. Wyoming s season proved to have both high and low s. The Cowgirls started the season on the road with a loss to Western Michigan, but won their next two games at home against Bryant University (3-1) and South Dakota (7-0). The seven goals against South Dakota was the second most goals in a single game in school history. The non-conference schedule ended with the Cowgirls adding wins against Gonzaga, Utah Valley, a tie against Idaho State, and a loss to Utah State. Conference action started with a victory over Air Force, and two weeks later defeated 29th ranked TCU 1-0. After the quick 2-0 MWC start, the Cowgirls lost their next five games. Three of those games ended with a score of 1-0. Since 2003, the Cowgirls have defended the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex with great success going 14-4 in conference play. The Cowgirls failed to make a post season bid and have yet to win a post season game. Senior Amanda Lathorp, a native of Lakewood, Colo. was named to MWC First Team All-Conference. Lathrop wrote her name in the UW record books by becoming career leader in assists with 15, and tied with fellow senior Tamika Wilson in career goals with 20.
