2 2008 Utah Soccer Signing Day Utah Soccer Signs Six Standouts The University of Utah soccer team has released its 2009 signing class as six players have inked a National Letter of Intent to play head coach Rich Manning this fall. By adding these six, our team speed and power has just increased by miles, said Manning. We really feel that after two years of thin rosters, our team depth will finally be restored. We expect these new players to come and challenge for starting positions and playing time right away. We love the qualities and personality they bring to our group and we cannot wait for August. These players are going to join a young, talented and hungry group of returners and we are optimistic about the team s potential. Head Coach Rich Manning Seven seasons Five NCAA Appearances Three regular-season MWC championships Two MWC Tournament championships Career Record: (.691) Three-time MWC Coach of the Year The 2009 class includes four players from the state of Utah: defender Monica Okapal (Bountiful), forward Hanna Terry (Park City), defender Zoe Van Gorder (Park City) and forward Natalie Young (Springville). Defender Ashley Mosley hails from Las Vegas, Nev., and midfielder Stephanie Lemeza (Mississauga, Ontario) round out the signees. The most important thing I can tell you these players is how excited and enthusiastic each of them is about our soccer team and the University of Utah. These players have visited the U some several times and there were always a lot of smiles from the girls and our coaching staff. We think this is a talented group and we really focused on finding girls that were a good match for our team and its values of working hard, loving the game and being a good teammates to each other. Our roster has endured tremendous turnover the last two years. It seemed like our needs were always changing. We were recruiting the class of 2009 for a long time, right up until signing day. It feels great, like we just won a big game. All six signees hail from accomplished clubs who have found success on a regional, national and international scale. The five domestic players are all products of the Olympic Development (ODP) program. All four in-state athletes have already played together on the Utah state ODP squad and are familiar with several members of the Utes current roster. Natalie and Ashley are excellent track athletes. Hanna and Monica have good speed and Stephanie and Zoe are powerful players. With Erin Dalley and Jen Christoffers coming back from redshirt years, the difference in our team s athleticism will be dramatic. Each of these players is an accomplished goal scorer as well, Manning continued. Natalie, Hanna and Monica were three of the top scorers in Utah last year. Ashley has scored a lot of goals in Nevada, Stephanie has a powerful shot and Zoe is dangerous coming forward on set pieces. We think our team just got much more dangerous on the offensive end, and when combined with the service we ll get from returners like Kelly Isleib, Chelsea Forbes and Katie Martinez, we expect to score a lot more goals next fall Signee Roster Name Utah No. Ht. She is a good passer and is not afraid to put it through your legs if you are not careful. She will probably play in midfield, but can also play in the back. Stephanie is a great prospect from the Erin Mills club in Canada which has consistently produced good college players for several years Georgia Soccer I am very excited about becoming a Ute and playing soccer out west. Ashley is lightning quick. She is two-footed and can play comfortably on either side of the field. Ashley defends well and is not afraid to come forward into the attack. We see her playing as an outside back for us, but she can easily move to midfield or the forward line. Her coach, Saeed Bonabian, coached the men s team here at the U. His players are always physically and mentally tough, and Ashley has those qualities as well. I am really looking forward to finally being able to play soccer with this group of girls. She has good speed but always looks under control. She has a good nose for the goal and is especially dangerous in the wide areas of the field. Monica overcame an ACL injury that wiped out her junior year and is back at full strength, which shows great mental toughness. She has come to camp here and has several friends on the team. Her sister, Lexi, attends the U. So she is familiar with our school and team and I think it will be an easy transition for her. She played for Dave Wigham at Bountiful High School. She can dribble, shoot, pass and run off the ball. She works on the edges of the field as well as the middle, and has the confidence that a forward needs to succeed. From the time Hanna committed as a junior to her signing she has improved as much as any player I can remember. She is one of the most driven players I have seen at the youth level. Hanna is so hungry to get better that she graduated a semester early to go to Sweden to study and train. Richie Breza and her Black Diamond team have played against the best competition in the country and she is ready for the college game. I am so excited about coming to play for the U it is a dream come true. I am really looking forward to competing with girls I have been playing with for years through club and high school, while meeting and getting to know my new teammates as well. Utah has always been at the center of my heart and I can t wait to play for Coach Manning and the amazing coaching staff. She can rock a tackle as well as anyone, can cover ground quickly and has the potential to be a great center back. We look forward to getting her on campus to start getting her the experience needed to reach that high ceiling. She played at Park City High School and Black Diamond with Hanna Terry. With the help of her coach, Richie Breza, Zoe has done a very good job of cleaning up her skills and is on her way to becoming a well-rounded player. Because of her track career, Natalie has not played as much soccer as our other signees. We saw her play at Springville High School last fall. The first things we noticed were that she is fast, she can play on the left or right side of the field, and she has a long throw in, all of which are all good qualities to have in your game. Natalie also has a good touch on the ball and is a tremendous competitor. We think she is going to flourish in the soccer environment that we have on our team. Natalie is going to run track for Utah in the spring, so she has made two programs very happy by choosing the U. I am really excited to get to Utah. I am looking forward to a new experience and I m ready to play. I think it will be a lot different but I can t wait to see what Utah has to offer me and what I can offer it.
