2 Visions of Cullen Park By Vee Stader We're in a little bit of a lull at Cullen Park now waiting for preliminaries to be taken care of for the restoration on the North side of the park. The same goes for the buoy installation on Summit St. marking the Westernmost Point of Lake Erie. But it will happen in due time and worth the wait. We are asking if anyone has pictures taken at Cullen Park of birds, butterflies, bats, amphibians, plant life, insects, wildlife, fish, etc. A board of Selected pictures would be used to depict what may be observed in the park. Contact me at if you can help out. A bass tournament was scheduled to be held on July the next one is Aug. 2. You can call Ron Sharp at if you are interested. The August meeting is changed to THURSDAY, THE 20th. Everyone is welcome. Enjoy the summer and come visit at the park. Our speaker will be Linda Fayerweather, Business Technology Specialist from the Toledo Public Library. She will talk about Library Resources and Assistance available for small businesses. There will be a social hour at 6:00 PM. A pork chop dinner will be prepared by River View Yacht Club Satin Gavel at 6:30 PM and is free for all PPBA members! Guests and honorary members are only $10. 3 Downstream By Len Syrek Disaster to some is just a blip on the radar to others! As a society, we are bombarded with so much negativity by all of the news media every day. Maybe, we have become impartial to the fact that people have suffered loss of their belongings and in some cases, maybe family members or friends during some type of disaster! Those tragedies may receive a small reaction but basically it s over and done with! Now when someone in our community has a loss of some type it may open up our eyes for a moment but that too shall pass! Compassion for those who have suffered a loss is soon forgotten unless it is a friendly neighbor, relative or friend. When a community by and large is affected by a common hardship or the possibly of a privilege or service being revoked, you may have a hot topic pushing your buttons! Flooded Basements: Storm Water Sewage Backup s in our basements has affected many of our neighbors this past June and July so far! If you were not affected by this hardship you too may be neutral to this disaster! But if sewage water was backing up in your basement you can relate how this experience has impacted your family s lives along with others! Drinking Water: What are the possibility Toledo s customers may lose Potable Drinking Water again this year? Now there s interest and topics for conversation about drinking water or the possibility of losing it once again this summer due to the polluted waters in Western Lake Erie! Toledo s drinking water is withdrawn from Western Lake Erie all year long. This water is then processed by the Toledo Water Treatment Plant. Issues in the lake are ongoing all year long not just in July, August and September. Maybe you have heard the term garbage in is garbage out! You can only do so much with what you start with! Now we have something in common to talk about with 500,000 other interested folks

6 11th Anniversary Point Place Days Walk "Mile for Mustard Seed" The Mile for Mustard Seed walk was held on Saturday, June 20th at Cullen Park and end at Friendship Park Community Center. Even though it was a misty morning, the rain held off. There were 70 individuals and business that registered or sponsored the walk. There were 25 dedicated people that made the mile walk. This year's walk raised $2000 that was donated to Mustard Seed. The only expense that came out of that was to purchase the T-Shirts that were given to the walkers and sponsors. Thank You to all who participated and sponsored the event.

12 July 4th at 6pm three new stones were unveiled at the Point Place Military Memorial Pathway Master of Ceremonies from WSPD- Adam Ragle Posting of Colors and 21 gun salute - Lou Diamond Detachment Pledge of Allegiance- Debbie Speegle Nation Anthem - Katie Kromenacker Prayer- Kellie Schlachter Speaker- Marly Eckert Closing Remarks - Nick Haupricht We want to thank the community for all your support, donations of time and money to help raise the funds for these stones. Debbie and I feel humbled and proud to be part of this project and thank you Nick for all your tireless effort - coming up with the idea and making this pathway a reality. The ceremony was very touching. Marly Eckert spoke about her father and how he will miss out on her life but how happy she is that she will have somewhere to bring her children and grandchildren. Myles and Marly unveiled the Iraq stone. Two Korean veterans saluted and unveiled the Korea stone, they also knew two of the men on the plaque, and grandchildren unveiled the Spanish American stone. Katie did an outstanding job singing the National Anthem and at the end Taps was played with two buglers echoing each other, and was simply fantastic. It was a very touching ceremony. Many tears were shed. But the tears are nothing compared to the ultimate sacrifice the men and women of Lucas County gave for us to be free. Remembrance, Inc. is looking for donors to help complete the pathway. The World War I and the Civil War stones still need funding. DK Treasures is fundraising for the World War II stone. Donations can be dropped off at Lighthouse Landing Art, Antique, and Craft Mall and they go directly to Remembrance Inc. Remembrance Inc. strives for excellence in its endeavors, especially in those that we are putting together in Lucas County. "Excellence is the result of caring more than others think is wise, risking more than others think is safe, dreaming more than others think is practical, and expecting more than others think is possible."
