Bay Area Waterski Club Flat Water Times Message from the Board by Jim Jardine Board Member Badal s H2O Ski Center skibadal@aol.com Camping with Bay Area Water Ski Club! Over the past 20 years, the ski club has done a lot of camping trips at various lakes. In the early days we would go to Rollins Lake. It is a smaller lake but nice. It was also very costly, and I remember spending $20 per car per night just to park. We did trips to Lake Berryessa which was nice but water conditions were only good for the first run of the morning. We only did one trip to McClure and due to the distance and cost; it proved to be more than the skiing was worth. When Pat joined the club, she introduced us to two new places to camp and ski on the Delta. One was Middleton s Island right at the end of Del s which is now River s End. Bill Middleton was a great guy who let us stay at his place for no charge for a few years. Unfortunately, he passed away some years ago. The second place to camp is Vieira s Resort on Hwy 160 on the Sacramento River. I had been skiing out of Vieira s for years prior to Pat joining the club but never knew they had a private camp ground. This place is awesome and is a bit costly for the club. In the many years that the club has been hosting this event, we have lost money. I think I have only missed 1 or 2 times out of the all years the club has gone there. Last year Whitney joined the club and her first event was Vieira s. This year she joined the board and suggested that the club do a camping trip at Walnut Grove Marina. So we put it on the schedule for July starting at noon Friday. Please come out and help support the club and camping events. Because I haven t been to that marina in several years I went out there last weekend to check things out. Here are some of the things I found. 2 Message from the Board (con t) By Jim Jardine The Marina is located perfectly where the Cosumnes River, Mokelumne River, Sacramento River, and Snodgrass Slough all connect. This marina provides access to some to the North Delta s best ski water. The Sacramento River with its high leaves provides a good wind break if windy and flat water. The camp ground is a grassy area and has power, water and restrooms. There is no BBQ pit so you will either need to bring a BBQ or camp stove for cooking. I ll have my camp stove and anyone is welcome to use it. The town is a nice little town with some good places to eat if you would rather not cook. There s Guisti s the oldest Restaurant and bar on the Delta and walking distance from the camp ground. In town there is Tony s bar and steak house, Pizza Factory and a Mexican Restaurant all within a few blocks of each other. Let s not forget the ice cream shop for those with a sweet tooth. So what are you waiting for go to the calendar and sign up now! - Jim Jardine, Board Member -2-

Past Events Season Opener & General Meeting - Saturday, May 3 By Gwen Cauthren, Roving Photographer: Karryl Turney This event was our second social & general meeting of the year to kick off the exciting season we have in store for BAWSC members. BAWSC member Steve Lorain hosted this event at his lovely home in Discovery Bay. Tyler, Pres. Tom, Jerry, Larry and Host Steve take time for a group shot. Steve ordered tri-tip w/rolls to serve for lunch and members all brought salads, fruit and lots of desserts to round out a fabulous lunch served at ~12noon. In preparation for the event, Steve, Gwen and Larry did a fabulous job setting up tables, umbrellas, and canopies to provide shade from the heat of the sun. Their effort paid off when it turned out to be a beautiful day in the low 80 s. This event as a big hit, we had at least 34 folks attending, with lots of socializing, followed by a short general meeting with BAWSC President Tom Turney telling folks about upcoming events and how to get involved. We ended with a raffle with some fun prizes being given away to lucky winners. Karryl and Pres. Tom sharing a mother/son moment! Going in for the feast. -7-

Past Events Season Opener & General Meeting - Saturday, May 3 (con t) By Gwen Cauthren, Roving Photographer: Karryl Turney Best wishes to the newly engaged couple! Ralph and his wife, Cindy, Steve, Cynthia and Jim: All smiles for the camera. Proud father, Chris and his lovely daughter, Amber! VP, Paul belting out a tune of some sort. -8-

Past Events Season Opener & General Meeting - Saturday, May 3 (con t) By Gwen Cauthren, Roving Photographer: Karryl Turney Gail Lohse (far right) in deep concentration. Gwen checkin her list. Host Steve conducting the orchestra! A huge thanks to chair & host, Steve Lorain and Co-chair, Gwen Cauthren (and Larry Ligon for set-up) for putting together such a great event! -9-

Past Events Boat Drivers Clinic - May 17 By Larry Ligon Eleven BAWSC folks spent their Saturday morning on May 17 reviewing the skills and techniques necessary for safely and optimally pulling skiers, boarders and surfers on the Delta. The Contra Costa County Sheriff s Marine Patrol also joined us in the morning for an expert presentation of safe and unsafe boating activities on the Delta, answering many questions as well as sharing info on their new patrol boats - two Yamaha supercharged jet skis! After lunch on Larry & Gwen s Discovery Bay deck, the attendees headed out to the Delta waters to practice what they learned under breezy, sunny skies. Under coaches Jim Jardine s, Chris Feduniw s, Jerry Baxter s and Larry Ligon s watchful eyes, students were given individual feedback as they practiced the finer points of piloting a high performance, tournament ski boat in some of the more challenging areas of the Delta while pulling volunteer boarders and skiers repeatedly out of the water. Tyler Beauchamp (left rear) pondering all the new boating instruction. Congratulations to participants Whitney Cary, Tyler Beauchamp, Dan DeSousa, Diane Rust, Craig Faitel, Eric Johnson, Brian McIntire, Carla Huston, Jim Herbert, Mark Frazier and Linda Rhodes for their successful completion of the 2014 BAWSC Driver s Clinic. Diane, Brian and Linda achieved Drivers in Training status while Whitney, Tyler, Dan, Craig, Eric, Carla, Jim and Mark attained BAWSC Certified Driver designation enabling them to drive during BAWSC events. Expectations are that Diane, Brian and Linda with some additional driving experience will be able to also obtain BAWSC certification. If you are a boat owner, please help these new drivers in training get additional experience by encouraging them to practice their skills under your guidance when out boating with you. Let s all bow our heads for a moment. -10-

Past Events Boat Drivers Clinic - May 17 By Larry Ligon Host Larry Ligon: And it s important to warm up before pulling up a skier! Many thanks to coaches Jim, Jerry and Chris for devoting their Saturday afternoon to sharing their driving experience and their boats as training vehicles. Special thanks to Gena Kraft for providing her boat for training as well. Additional thanks to Paul Wesolowski for volunteering to be a practice ski victim by braving the windy Delta waters and allowing himself to be repeatedly pulled up and dumped back in. Boat Driver Coach Jim Jardine gives a few tips before the group practices what they learned. -11-
