5 Page 5 The Morning Line Tuesday, June 14, 2011 Beach Polo in Germany Audi Wins the Julius Bär Beach Polo World Cup Sylt 2011 New champions have been crowned at The Julius Bär Beach Polo World Cup Sylt after the Audi team of Siegfried Grohs from Germany and Argentina s Gastón Maiquez, overcame Julius Bär in the final to take the title. After two close chukkas, the Julius Bär team of Germany s Sven Schneider and fifteen year old Lukas Sdrenka, opened up a 5-3 lead in the third, but six handicap Gastón Maiquez kept his side in the match scoring three unanswered goals to lead 5-6 going into the fourth chukka. The final chukka saw Maiquez in devastating form, scoring two more goals to take a 5-8 lead and despite a late surge from team Julius Bär, Audi held on, eventually winning 7-8. Maiquez performance saw him named the Julius Bär Leading Scorer, and with Julius Bär contributing 200 for every goal scored by the Leading Scorer, Maiquez s oustanding total of 14 goals over the tournament raised 2,800 towards the event s official charity, Coastal Protection Foundation Sylt. When combined with additional donations made during the weekend, over 15,000 was handed over to the charity by Julius Bär during the prize giving ceremony. In recognition of his outstanding play over the weekend in Sylt, Lukas Sdrenka has been invited to join the Julius Bär International Polo Academy at Polo Park Zurich from 18 - July. Over five days he will be able to develop his polo skills, both on and off the field, and build on what has already been a remarkable career for such a young player. Earlier in the afternoon, team Maus Real Estate defeated team Koenig Pilsner 4-2 in the 3rd / 4th place play-off, and team Lanson beat the all-female team of GOS- CH 5-4 to take 5th place. Played on the beautiful island of Sylt off the coast of northern Germany, and now in its fourth year, The Julius Bär Beach Polo World Cup is Germany s leading polo event with over 10,000 spectators visiting over the weekend. 6 Page 6 The Morning Line Tuesday, June 14, 2011 Talandracas turns rain soaked final into a triumph Story by Diana Butler Facundo Sola, the 19-year-old player who has been the talk of the Talandracas team, scored the golden goal in extra time to give his team victory in the 2011 Harcourt Developments Queen s Cup Final. His patron, Edouard Carmignac, who has twice won the subsidiary trophy in 2006 and 2007 received the silver cup from HRH Prince Harry. This popular VIP was accompanied into the presentation arena by Melissa Stisted and Thandi Wooldridge as this day was held in memory of their husbands, the Club s Chief Executive Charlie Stisted and the Club s much respected polo patron Ian Wooldridge, who were killed in a helicopter crash last October. However, what will stand out for the sell out crowd at Guards Polo Club was that this final went to seven chukkas despite the torrential rain, which marred much of the day. In fact, all four games, which were played at Guards on this day the final and sub final of The Queen s Cup plus two Al Habtoor Royal Windsor games all went into extra time. Jerome Wirth s Enigma had the upper hand in the early stages of the final and were 5-1 up at the end of the second chukka. Then it was the turn of Talandracas to dominate, thanks to some great goals from Milo Fernandez-Araujo and Lucas Monteverde, to close the gap. Al- though Enigma failed to score in the third, they still had a 5-3 lead going into half-time. However failure to find the flags again in the fourth allowed Talandracas to get back in the game and level the score at 5-5. The score was tied at 6-all in the fifth, but late chukker Enigma then found their form and the lead once more (8-6), thanks to goals from Matias MacDonough and Juan Jauretche. The crowd could not believe that they were witness to such a great game in such appall- Please turn to page 7 Above, A member of the Honorable Artillery Company (ph Guards Polo Club/ Centaur Photographic) Cowneck 8 // 0-1 VL Ranch 8 // 1-0 Ikepod 8 Dillon Bacon 1 Mark VanLith 1 Guillermo Obregon 1 Ezra Stevenson 2 Chris Briere 1 Adam Lindemann 2 Marcos Del Rio 4 Naco Taverna 6 Juam Martin Obergon 4 TBA 1 Marcelo Dorea 0 Tomas Alberdi 1 Bracket B (4 teams) Kelpies 8 Equuleus 6 M. 7 Page 7 The Morning Line Tuesday, June 14, 2011 Continued from page 6 ing conditions and nobody dared to leave their seats in case they missed something. Incredibly, Enigma again failed to score in the sixth, leaving Araujo to find the flags twice and level the score, thus ensuring an extra, seventh chukka. On the first play from the throw-in by the boards, Tlandracas Milo Araujo deflected the ball nicely as a pass to teammate Facundo Sola: the young Sola ran it and shot to goal on the soaked ground. Unsure if the ball would reach the goal line, Facundo try to come back to hit it, but fouled the group of players coming in on the line from the throw-in. A penalty #5 was exacted from the spot, but Enigma failed to dispatch the ball away from danger, Talandracas back on the attack, an open goal penalty #2 called on the subsequent play 10 yards from goal when Enigma defenders were called crossing. This was Sola s opportunity to score, giving Talandracas their first Queen s Cup win. His teammate, Araujo, was named DeWitt Most Valuable Player and stepped up to receive a watch from the company s founder, Jerome De Witt. DeWitt, the official timekeepers of The Queen s Cup, also sponsored the Best Playing Pony prize, which was received by Enigma s Juan Martin Nero for his seven-year-old Argentine bay mare Chica. Nero played this pony in the second and sixth chukka. Nero also received another best playing pony award the Retrained Racehorse Award for Autour Du Monde, a seven-year-old chestnut mare that he owns jointly with teammate Matias Mac- Donough. Sixteen teams entered the Harcourt Developments Queen s Cup in 2011 two more teams than last year. In fact, the subsidiary final was a good example of the high standard of play which has characterised this year s competition. La Bamba De Areco and Les Lions faced each other on finals morning in the rain. Due to the conditions, and the fact that this was a subsidiary, no-one would have been surprised if the players had not been the most passionate of players. However, this match went to seven chukkas and the golden goal was scored in the last 30secs of extra time. Passion and determination have been the hallmarks of this year s tournament and every game has been superb. Above, Early action in Sunday s Sunday, before the rain got heavy. The play was turned and Talandracas was able to bring the ball back to the scoreboard goal eventually scoring for 5-2 and leaving for halftime with only a 2 goal deficit, 5-3. Talandracas would tie the game at 5-all in the fourth. After the failed 6-1 chance in the second, Enigma would not score again until early fifth chukker. Below left, Juan Martin Nero.
