STANFORD MEN'S SOCCER CONCLUDES SOLID 2004 CAMPAIGN STANFORD MEN S SOCCER NOTES 2004 In Brief... Stanford fi nished the 2004 campaign with a mark, and a record in conference play, fi nishing fourth in the Pac-10 conference. The Cardinal began the season with a draw against Tulsa, before reeling off fi ve straight victories. The squad began the season with fi ve straight shutouts, the most consecutive shutouts to begin a season by a Cardinal squad since For the season, the Cardinal defense posted seven shutouts and the offense out-scored opponents by a margin. Seniors Darren Fernandez and Matt Janusz carried most of the scoring load, as the tandem accounted for 12 of the team's 21 scores. Fernandez Headlines Cardinal All-Pac-10 Honorees... Eight Stanford men's soccer players were tabbed for All-Pac-10 recognition, as announced by commissioner Tom Hansen. Forward Darren Fernandez was named to the All-Pac-10 First Team following an outstanding senior campaign. Junior Cooper McKee and senior Matt Janusz earned second team accolades, while Robby Fulton, Aaron Maines, James Twellman, Seyi Abolaji, and Michael Brown were named as honorable mention selections. Fernandez, a three-time All-Pac-10 selection, was named to the All-Pac-10 First Team for the fi rst time in his career. Janusz earned his second straight All-Pac-10 selection, while Fulton was named All-Pac-10 honorable mention for the third straight season. McKee garnered All-Pac-10 honors in his fi rst season on The Farm, and Twellman was an honorable mention selection despite missing much of the season's second half due to injury. 11 Stanford Players Tabbed For Academic All-Pac-10 Accolades... Seniors Robby Fulton, Todd Leber, and James Twellman garnered First Team Academic All-Pac-10 honors as announced by the Pac-10 offi ce. It marked the third straight First Team selections for Fulton and Twellman, who received First Team accolades in each year they were eligible during their careers on The Farm. In addition to the First Team selections, Matt Janusz, Andrew Kartunen, Bronson McDonald, and Bret Shimizu were named to the Second Team, while Seyi Abolaji, Michael Brown, Aaron Maines, and Galen Thompson received honorable James Twellman Earns Academic All-District Accolades... Senior James Twellman was selected to the CoSIDA Academic All-District VIII team. It marks the second straight selection for Twellman, who has posted a 3.73 grade point average as an International Relations major at Stanford. The Chesterfi eld, Missouri native is a two-time Pac-10 All-Academic First Team performer, and has earned Honorable Mention All-Pac-10 honors twice during his Cardinal career. The Academic All-District soccer team was voted on by CoSIDA members from within the District VIII states. The all-district selections advance to the national ballot, which will be released November 22. Record Books... Several Cardinal players entered the record books following the 2004 season. Senior goalkeeper Robby Fulton fi nished his career with the second lowest career goals against average in Cardinal program history at Fulton also raised his career saves total to 161, which ranks sixth on the Stanford all-time chart. Senior midfi elder Aaron Maines appeared in all 18 games during the season to bring his career games played total to 83, putting him into fi fth place on the Cardinal career list. Senior forward Darren Fernandez ended his collegiate career 11th on the Stanford career goals chart with 25. Cardinal Clips... The 2004 squad out-scored opponents by a margin, despite being out-shot Nine different Cardinal players scored goals this season, while 12 different players assisted on scores... Senior Todd Leber, sophomore Galen Thompson, and freshmen Evan Morgan and Dan Shapiro each scored their fi rst collegiate goal during the 2004 campaign... Stanford posted a mark when scoring fi rst... The Cardinal converted on all three penalty kick attempts during the 2004 season, with senior James Twellman scoring one and senior Matt Janusz burying a pair of PK's during the season... Four players started all 18 matches for Stanford with senior Darren Fernandez, juniors Bronson McDonald and Cooper McKee, and sophomore Michael Brown starting every contest.

After earning the goalkeeper spot on both the Soccer America and the College Soccer News National Teams of the Week, sophomore Andrew Kartunen added the Pac-10 Player of the Week honor to his list of accolades for the 2004 season. Kartunen posted two more shutouts, collecting fi ve saves in the wins over San Jose State and San Diego, and was tabbed as the Co-MVP of the Cal-Adidas Legacy Classic along with Cal defender Noah Merle. Kartunen has recorded fi ve shutouts this season and has made 19 saves. Fulton Named to Hermann Award Watch List... Senior Goalkeeper Robby Fulton was one of 25 players named to the watch list for the M.A.C. Hermann Trophy, collegiate soccer's top individual honor. Fulton enters the season with a 0.72 career goals against average, the second lowest career GAA in program history. He set a program record with a 0.42 GAA during the 2002 season. The 25 players named to the list are considered to be among the top players entering the 2004 season. A list of 15 semifi nalists will be announced in November, with three fi nalists selected in early December. The winner will be announced at a dinner at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis on January 8, Recruiting Class Ranked Among Nation's Elite... Stanford's group of freshmen and transfers was tabbed as the sixth best crop of newcomers in the nation by Soccer America. A seven-member freshman class highlights the incoming group, including defender Scott Bolkan and defender Mark Bartlett, a member of the New Zealand Under-20 National Team. Bolkan was rated as the eighth best incoming freshman by Soccer America while Bartlett was listed as 20th in the publication's individual rankings. Three Cardinal Tabbed as Freshmen to "Keep an Eye on"... Cardinal freshmen Mark Bartlett, Scott Bolkan and Luke Sager were named as three of the 100 freshmen to "keep an eye on" by College Soccer News. All defenders, the trio will compete for time on the Cardinal back line this season. Stanford Picked to Finish Fourth in Pac-10 Preseason Coaches Poll... The Stanford men s soccer team was picked to fi nish fourth in the Pacifi c-10 Conference pre-season coaches poll. The Cardinal, who fi nished sixth in the conference last season, ranked behind UCLA, California, and Washington in this year s poll. The Bruins received 14 points, edging out California (13 points). Washington was picked third with 10 points. Stanford held the fourth position with eight points, followed by Oregon State (fi ve points). The 2004 Slate... Stanford has put together a challenging schedule once again. It is one that will see the Cardinal play 10 of their 18 games away from the comfort of Maloney Field, and face 11 teams that were selected for NCAA Tournament competition in Of Stanford's 14 opponents on the 2004 schedule, eight of them were ranked in preseason polls issued by the NSCAA and College Soccer News in Brief... The Cardinal fi nished the 2003 season with a overall record and a mark in Pacifi c-10 conference play. Stanford lost fi ve games by one goal last season and played four overtime contests, posting a mark. 11 of Stanford's 16 opponents were selected for postseason play in HEAD COACH BRET SIMON Bret Simon begins his fourth season as Stanford's head men's soccer coach, and has compiled a record of through the 2003 season for a.634 winning percentage, the fi fth best in program history. Entering the campaign, Simon has posted an overall record of (.722) in his nine years as a Division I head coach. Simon is the fi rst coach to lead two different schools to the men's College Cup, taking both Creighton (1996, 2000) and Stanford (2001, 2002) to collegiate soccer's premier event. COACHING STAFF Matt Stimson enters his fourth season as the top assistant on head coach Bret Simon's staff. Stimson has helped the Cardinal reach unprecedented levels of success on The Farm, as Stanford made two straight College Cup appearances in 2001 and Tim Hanley begins his third season working with the Stanford goalkeepers. Under Hanley's tutelage, Robby Fulton recorded a 0.42 goals against average in 2002, the lowest single season GAA in program history. Hanley has also coached the last two Major League Soccer Goalkeeper of the Year award recipients (Joe Cannon and Pat Onstad) with the San Jose Earthquakes. Volunteer assistant coach Ryan Webb joins the Cardinal staff following coaching stints at the collegiate and ODP levels in his native Mississippi.
