2 PISTE IMPROVEMENTS Eric Hatfield and Mick Weston have completed their latest phase of improvements to facilities at Lordswood P.C. as shown on the front cover. Their new addition is a decking veranda outside the management cabin. And very nice it is too. HATFIELD & WESTON...numeration free jobbing builders and general Piste improvers never tire of applying their waking hours and industry to making Lordswood into one of the best petanque venues in Kent. It has been noticed that Mick Weston s pointing has greatly improved as a direct result of the refurbishment work. It was suggested to Eric that a barge load of foreign workers moored on the Medway could possibly help with the next phase of construction... did not impress. Eric and Mick received some help from Les Clark and Colin Mears, who, with his vast knowledge of very old popular music, might suggest that the new venue could be a suitable setting for duelling banjo s. Have heard tell that several Clubs have made improvements to their facilities, or are about to, including the George P.C., White House P.C., Tovil P.C., Duke of Wellington P.C. and Hartley Country Club P.C. All to the good of petanque and the players. Confirmed at the KPA Management meeting 29th January, that Tovil and the George will receive substantial cash grants from the KPA to go towards the even larger sums spent by the two Clubs on improvements. COLIN SENNECK introduces his new idea. A very professional looking poster explaining all you need to know about Petanque. The idea is to locate this poster adjacent to the petanque terrain at Hartley Country Club P.C. to inform inquisitive folk who happen to wander past the area when a game is being played, and will immediately answer their question of what's going on ere then. The hope being to encourage some interest from non-petanque players. Other Clubs have shown an interest in the poster, including Lordswood P.C. and the George P.C. and should your Club express any interest, please contact Colin Senneck at Hartley Country Club P.C. 3 NEW VENUE AT GILLINGHAM STAR MEADOW SPORTS & SOCIAL CLUB DARLAND AVENUE GILLINGHAM ME7 3AN HOME VENUE OF MEADOW PETANQUE CLUB and STAR MEADOW PETANQUE CLUB A very good venue with excellent bar and social facilities, has two large pistes at present with plans to instal more pistes prior to the start of the 2009 season.. Following their temporary re-location to Lordswood last year, the Plough and Chequers P.C. have now found a permanent home at the Star Meadow Sports Club which is located in Darland Avenue, Gillingham. Following their AGM the move was unanimously endorsed and the club name has been changed to the MEADOW PETANQUE CLUB. Also resident at the same venue are STAR MEADOW PETANQUE CLUB made up of former members of 442 Club who were similarly disposed at the end of last year. Meadow Petanque Club will be hosting three competitions this year, the Meadow Doubles on 14th June and the Meadow Triples on 6th September and the popular Christmas Hamper Doubles on 6th December. In addition, Meadow Petanque Club plan to host an open-day event once the pistes have been completed, so watch out details. Page 3

4 A sizeable crowd turned out for the KPA Management Committee meeting held 29th January at Lordswood. There is a move afoot by the KPA to encourage Clubs to send representatives to the regular meetings, to observe planning and discussions made by the KPA and to report back to their Clubs and the fee paying members. The sizeable crowd of three..were asked at the end of the meeting if their presence at the meeting had proved useful, they agreed that it had been an informative exercise, and, not a single shoe was thrown in anger. The dates and venues for the remaining KPA meetings for 2009 are.. 12th MARCH HARTLEY P.C. 23rd APRIL TOVIL P.C. 4th JUNE LORDSWOOD P.C. 16th JULY VILLAGERS P.C. 24th SEPTEMBER HARTLEY P.C. 5th NOVEMBER TOVIL P.C. 3rd DECEMBER VILLAGERS P.C. All the meetings start at 8pm, and representatives from KPA registered Clubs are welcome to attend. Wednesday League matches will soon be upon us, and there are some administrative changes for the 2009 season. All Clubs that played in the Summer Leagues last summer, will automatically receive 2009 Registration Forms through the post, which should be completed and sent together with a cheque, by post, to... KEN BUCHAN, 1 HIGH VIEW, VIGO VILLAGE, MEOPHAM. KENT, DA13 0RR New Teams and Clubs that have not previously played in the Summer Leagues should contact.. KEN BUCHAN Tel. 5 2009 COUNTY TRIPLES QUALIFIERS Sometimes referred to as the Regional Qualifiers, the Grand Prix, and the Regional Triples Qualifiers. They are THE COUNTY REGIONAL TRIPLES QUALIFIERS and comprise 4 competitions held at four separate venues on four separate dates throughout the summer. The aim of the competitions is to establish the top triples teams in Kent that will represent Kent at the National Competition at Pontins Brean Sands in September. The results of these qualifier competitions may also be used to select teams to represent Kent in other unspecified competitions. These Triples Qualifiers are managed by a KPA Playing Committee chaired by TREVOR GLENN. At the Playing Committee meeting held on the 15th January the arrangements of the competitions for 2009 were discussed. Some of the points raised and discussed at the meeting were as follows and as yet are to be ratified by the Playing Committee generally accepted that the Swiss system was successful for 2008 and should be repeated in 2009 cost of entry into each qualifying competition suggested to remain at 6 per player...suggested alteration to playing rules, if less than 32 teams play in any competition, then 5 games will be played. points awarded and summated for each qualifying round to be established a rule or guidance is required relating to the attendance of the 4th team member a decision is to be made relating to the optimum team arrangements for juniors suggested to have a new more modern Kent team strip for 2009, and that the basic kit should be 2 polo tops, an outer layer such as as a micro-fleece zip jacket. The KPA Management Committee will run the Chairman's Cup in conjunction with the County Qualifiers as per last year, where all teams that enter the Qualifiers that do not go to Brean Sands will be invited to a free entry cash prize competition in September. This was tried for the first time last year and proved to be successful., and hopefully will encourages more participants into the County Triples Qualifiers. Also as with previous years, the Qualifiers will assist in providing teams to represent Kent at Dunkerque Should it be of interest...the following Kent Petanque Clubs were registered with the EPA in 1980 Battle of Britain PC Fleet PC G.A.S.P Folkestone Civic Centre PC Sec. The 4 Teams will then play-off in a separate event, and the overall winning team will represent the EPA at the Confederation de Europeene Petanque (CEP) 2009 European Cup for Club Teams Competition. Pretty impressive so far!! For each match, each team may consist of 6, 7 or 8 players. Teams of six players must include one player of the opposite gender to the remainder of the Team. Teams of 7 or 8 players must include two players of the opposite gender to the remainder of the Team.
