2 CLARION DOUBLES CROWBOROUGH P.C. 5th APRIL On one of the warmest sunniest days of the year so far the Clarion Doubles was held by Crowborough Pétanque Club. Luton, Harrow Croydon, Adur, Handcross, Brighton, Tovil, Oxshott, Hartley and Harriers were represented along with teams from Crowborough. With twenty three teams taking part, the morning s play was divided into five leagues of four and one of three, with the top two teams in each league going into the main. There were several very close games of and during the mornings play, four teams won all their games and four lost all theirs, there was one fanny. Lunch was taken at one with the leagues games finished or nearly over. The afternoon s play got under way before two-o-clock with twelve teams competing in the main and eleven in the plate. Surprisingly Kingston (Ben Brousson & David Bourdeau) whom had easily won all their games in the morning, were knocked out in the first round of the main by an Oxshott team who had only won one in the morning. Then it became clear that Chiltern (Adrian Emson & Myra Huntley) and Frogeyes (Pam & Neville Plummer, Harriers) would be the ones to watch. Both teams easily made their way into the final with 13-6, and 13-5, victories. The final was a great game to watch with some fine pointing and shooting and three dead ends. Adrian just had the edge on the shooting clearing Pam s excellent points on the jack two or three times in an end. With the game at nine all Adrian with his last boulé shot Frogeyes nearest boulé out to give Chiltern an 11-9 lead. Frogeyes came back in the next end to bring the score to but the next end Chiltern took the point and the match, a very good and deserved victory. The plate had long been decided the junior team Young Ones (Callum McCrea & Adam Barclay Crow bough Social Club and Wheatsheaf) doing very well to get into the semi-final. With 13-7 & 13-2 victories. However it was to be London Pride (Nick Goodheart 7 Simon Adamsdale Harrow) and Oxshott Wolves (Frank Charlesworth & Chris Peat) who made it to the final. Oxshott convincingly took command with fine pointing and shooting never gave their opponents any leeway and took the plate I think everybody enjoyed a good day of pétanque in nice surroundings good company and beautiful weather. 5 The HARRIERS P.C. MAYOR OF MAIDSTONE COMPETITION SUNDAY 19th APRIL at TOVIL Winners of the MAIN COMPETITION. The LEGO HEADS, CHRIS WATKINS, BARRY WING and GEOFF BOOTH Winners of the PLATE COMPETITION, - M & Ns MIKE QUESNEL, NORMAN JARRUD & NORMAN BROWN 22 teams attended the Harriers Mayor of Maidstone Triples Competition on Sunday 19th April 2009 at TOVIL Working Men s Club. This was more than double the amount of years compared to last year. A really good turn out. Luckily with the extra pistes laid out at Tovil, we were well able to cope with all the teams. Although the weather forecast was for mild sunny weather, the morning play was cold and grey with a biting wind, but that all changed for the afternoons play, and the sun came out. Clubs represented were, Lordswood. Tovil, Villager, Walnut Tree, Star Meadow, The George, Old Sheaf, Gravesend, Duke of Wellington, Fighting Cocks and Harriers. Other teams that were represented were from Brighton, Croydon, Eastern Region (Towers) and Chiltern Region. Phil and Marion from Pen-Y-Coed also turned up to play and brought their display/shop with them. The main competition was won by the Lego Heads (Barry Wing, Geoff Booth and Chris Watkins) who beat Pyromania (Scott Ashby, Sarah Huntley and Matthew Whatley) The Lego Heads were at one stage 11 5 up and it seemed as if the game was all over, but Pyromania rallied and clawed back to near victory only to lose at the last end by one point. A good match played out on the new pistes. The Consolage was won by the Rejects (Dave Hurren, Richard Spillet and Matt Horrigan) who played against Lordswood 10 (Mick Weston, Larry Belcher and Innes Clark). The Plate Final was won by M & Ns (Mike Quesnel, Norman Garrud and Norman Brown) who played against Old Sheaf (Dave Snook, Teresa Williams and Shane Howarth Cash and wine prizes were given out in the three competitions. Many thanks to Paul Hardwick of Tovil W.M.C. for the donation of raffle prizes. 6 PAUL HARDWICK FOR CHANCELLOR At a time when the bankers and grand fromages have done their best to bankrupt this country, local big boy PAUL comes good with both beer and wonga. A wonderful pint of hand pump draft LONDON PRIDE at 2 a pint (YES 2 A PINT) served at TOVIL WORKING MENS CLUB home of TOVIL P.C. and HARRIERS P.C. Well done PAUL..he keeps the beer in excellent condition..ready and waiting. KENT PETANQUE ASSOCIATION MANAGEMENT MEETING 23rd APRIL A few years ago there was a change in the organisation of Petanque in the U.K. which has never reached the full expectations of those involved in the changes. However KENT Petanque is alive and very healthy thanks in part to a major change in the finances of Petanque, where members contribution to the E.P.A. (old B.P.A.) was effectively reduced, but at the same time the KENT region was given the opportunity to raise additional funds from the KENT membership. This change has resulted in the healthy state of the K.P.A. finances, but more importantly it has made it possible for the K.P.A. to give back money to Clubs in the form of grants to help improve the venues for playing Petanque in KENT. The prime example being Lordswood, an excellent venue made possible by the hard work of a few Lordswood Club members and a grant from the K.P.A. However this policy of grants to Clubs has reached the budget limit for the present time with a couple of appeals for money still outstanding. The committee also discussed the ownership of equipment purchased by a KPA grant when Petanque is no longer played at a given venue. The investigations into a covered terrain continue with the latest look at inflatable moveable covers being made. Ken Buchan takes over from Ron Yates as one of the trustees of the KPA Junior Fund. Mick Weston is investigating secure storage at Lordswood for the KPA bric-a-brac. Possibility that there maybe a new trophy presented at the end of the season for Players Player of the Year. 7 Starting in April and following on from the success of last year there will be a summer long programme of the 2009 KENT ACADEMY for the Junior players of Kent. To help our Junior players develop and improve, the Academy will be a mixture of coaching and games. Each new KPA player will get an exclusive Kent Petanque Academy polo shirt. Each course will start at 10am and will comprise one hour coaching session, with a qualified and authorized coach, followed by two doubles games, finishing at 1pm. Each of these games will be with a different partner and over the whole five weeks the results will accumulate with the best player receiving a trophy and prize as Kent Junior Petanque Champion Every junior of whatever ability is welcome and new players are especially welcome to join the Academy where we can provide boules...and bring a friend if you wish. 9 TO FIND THE TOP LADIES TRIPLES TEAM IN ENGLAND The overall Competition is over three rounds, at three different venues on three different dates. The First round was held on Sunday 26th April at THURMASTON P.C., Leicestershire in the E.P.A East Midlands Region, and the results for the round are as listed below. The next round will be held at HARROW P.C. on Sunday 17th May, and the final third round will be held on Sunday 21st June at a venue to be arranged. The first two rounds are held to establish the top eight teams from the accumulated points of both the rounds. The top eight teams, only, go to round three to establish the top ladies triples in England, and from this final table of eight, teams will be chosen to represent England in international competitions. Last year three ladies from Kent, Fay Golder, Sheila King and Lynda Shrimpton were the team that finished top of the final eight in round three and represented England in the Ladies World championships in Turkey.
