KENT PETANQUE ASSOCIATION ISSUE No.76 OCTOBER 2012 You cannot rely on the British press or T.V. to provide full coverage, or in fact any coverage of the recent Petanque World Championships held this year in the city of Marseilles. Famed for the French Connection...the British media offered No Connection with Marseilles or the petanque. However, a few stalwart Brits managed to report on some limited information whilst.. attending the Championships..chained to a sweat soaked bed in a cheap hotel being force fed castollet typing short notes on Facebook with the aid of a free literary big toe..or.reporting from the comfort of the Blighty based armchair viewing the Championships from some iffy T.V. relay. So with thanks to these plucky Brits, who managed against all odds to get the news through.and we can build up some sort of picture of Marseilles and the Petanque Championships. Marseilles...a very interesting and exciting City, with an apparent shortage of ice-cream sellers. England was represented by the team of SOFAINE LACHINI, HERVE BAVAZZANO and JEROME ROUSSAEAU, with Sofaine also playing in the shooting competition. France were the Team Championship, and the English team came around 32nd position (depending how you interpret the final scores and tables). The telling play of the championships was the pointing on a difficult terraine. There was a very wide ability gulf between the top players and the rest. France were very strong and have several youngsters waiting in the wings who will probably replace the existing French team at the next Championships. KPA GAZETTE Page 1

Of the 13 teams from countries from Northern Europe, only one team, the team from Belgium featured in the top 16. Strong rumour from the top boys...that Petanque will be included as a sport in the Olympics of year which is good news for our grandchildren! Could be a new rule coming from these Championships regarding the position of the cochonet at the start of a game...the leading team throws the coch (as existing rules), but only once, and if this throw results in the coch being out of bounds (ie further than 10 metres), then the other team places the coch to a position of their choosing. A rule that is used already in many minor local competitions in France and has the effect of minimising time wasting. And some notes from a Kent player who was at the Championships..The World Championship format is a bit different from any other that we play in. It starts with a five round Swiss over time restricted games. [ 75 minutes plus two ends and then another if tied. Only one throw of the cochonet and then the opposition can place it.] The top 24 (in effect 3+ wins) went through to 8 pools of 3, seeded according to their finishing position in the Swiss. The top 2 in each pool [games played without time restriction] went to the top 16 of the Worlds while the third placed team went to the top 16 of the Coupe de Nations. Both competitions continued as knock out. Top management from the E.P.A. in a happy mood await the start of the competition with rule book in hand England 10-7 up (pictured) against Slovenia in the second round who turned out to be very dogged opponents, turning this game round to win and then going on to bag a last 16 game on the 'show court' against France. For England there was no respite in the third round being beaten by surprise package Canada who went on to a QF against Belgium. A comfortable win in the fourth round against Bermuda (or Shedfield don't ask!) meant England were one of 20 teams on two wins going into the 5 th round. This match played at 9pm was never going to be easy and so it proved, England losing to Monaco and a place in the pool rounds of the Coupe de Nations. England won their first game in the Coupe de Nations pool but then lost to Denmark and then Tchad in the barrage game to go out. New Zealand had a good event making the top 24 but a tough pool with Belgium and Tunisia saw them into the Coupe de Nations going out to Cambodia in the quarter finals. Of note because ex Kent league player Dave Lippard was playing for New Zealand. Notes and pictures by DAVID BAXTER The thoughts of a Kent sage...yet again.if proof were needed. the first point of the game is a very important boule KPA GAZETTE Page 2

Saturday 22nd September 2012 at Lordswood Sports and Social Club. As Kent players will hopefully be aware...this cost free entry competition is available to all Kent players who have played previously in at least one Regional Triples Qualifier and did not qualify to represent Kent at the finals at Mill Rythe Hayling Island. A competition that attracted twelve triples teams, including a large group from Hartley P.C. who took full advantage of this competition that offered prizes for all including a top prize of 150 for the winning team, and lots of fine wines in bottles of differing sizes. Martin and Annette presided over this friendly enjoyable competition that has now been running for the past five years. A nice autumn day under the trees hosted by Mick Weston and Eric Hatfield of Lordswood P.C. with Innes Clark chef for the day on the bar -b-que. In the morning session three leagues of four were played, and after a leisurely lunch a knockout competition was held for a main competition and a plate competition. The teams taking part were. Mick Weston Phil Calderwood-Toby Robinson John Waterworth-Mick Nash-Colin Gibbs Phil Rixon-Mark Hopper-Tony Morez Rae Wall-Maureen Fuller-Geoff Fuller David Baxter Margaret Baxter-Bridget Snow Lois Adam-Alan Rush-Jeni Rush Ron Yates-Eileen Fowers-John Fowers Debbie Capelin-Mike Capelin-Peter Isles Steve Brown-Becci Brown-Duncan Brown Corinne Cooter-Mark Cooter-Tracy Turner Irene Gibbs-Joyce Nash-Mags Yates John Adam-Richard King-Eric Hatfield. The final of the main was won by the Steve Brown team who beat the Phil Rixon team with a score of 13 8,... and the plate final was between the Mick Weston team who beat the David Baxter team with a score of Every player went home with wine...and the Brown family went home 150 better off..a good competition. 4 England (White tops): Dave Turner, Greg Davenport, Mark Cooter, Rowland Jones, Kevin Spillett & Tracy Turner. (Squad mem. (Squad members not pictured Corinne and Jennifer Cooter)Germany (Red tops): Jens Christian Beck, Frank Maurer, Sönke Baking, Benjamin Lehmann, Mahmut Tufan and Pascal Keller Following their high place finish in the first "Tournoi Europeen" last year the Meadow Petanque Club were invited back again in 2012 to represent England in a top class event hosted by the town of Dives-sur-Mer in Normandie, France over the weekend of 14th to 16th September. This year the event was even bigger with 20 sides invited. Countries that accepted invitations included International sides from Belgium, Germany and Netherlands along with club sides from Spain, Norway, England, Belgium, Morocco and two sides from different regions of Italy along with 10 French club sides from around the country. The event commenced on the Friday evening with the presentation of the teams and then the drawing of the lots with each group consisting of two international teams and two French club sides. This was followed by a supper of Paella and a Flamenco evening (yes, I did say earlier we were in France). The competition proper started early on Saturday with doubles matches. England faced a tough draw against last year's runners-up Saint Pierre Les Elbeuf (Seine-Maritime), Bonneuil (Île-de-France) and the German National squad including their 2012 World Championship team. Meadow recorded two good wins against the two French club sides but despite some close games against the German National team they were unable to capitalise and finished second in their group to go into the "B" group on the Sunday to play off for 5th to 8th places. With no expense spared by the SUD Petanque Club and the local authority, Saturday evening saw a champagne reception at the local casino followed by a sit down three course dinner before departing back to the hotel. Another tough draw on the Sunday saw the Meadow drawn against two top French sides: Laon (Picardy) and Dunkerque (Nord), who finished in third and fourth places respectively last year, and Belgium 1. Despite recording a draw against Belgium 1 the Meadow didn't take their chances in the other matches and only finished in eighth place. The Meadow squad were disappointed not to have improved on their sixth place finishing position in 2011 but they were certainly not outclassed and held their own against top continental opposition. An indication of the calibre of this competition is that the bottom group included Italy 1, Nice and the hosts SUD Petanque Club, who's terrain we were playing on. For the record the German National team went on to win the event. Report by MARK COOTER KPA GAZETTE Page 4

At TOVIL WORKINGMAN S CLUB...23rd September.in the rain. Jean Louis Guiot plays on a very long, but very wet piste, in the semi-finals under instructions to carry on and keep pointing from his partner Bob Gaywood, who takes cover out of the weather in the comfort of the Tovil Shelter. A total of twelve teams braved the weather forecast to play in this competition. Weather was reasonable in the morning with a very high standard of play between some excellent pairings. Rain appeared around midday and got steadily worse thereafter. Final winners, and Kent Doubles Champions for year 2012 are SCOTT ASHBY and SARAH HUNTLEY who beat Dean Ashby and Jack Blows in the final. Some autumn days can be fresh, bright and sunny.this day was not. 43 triples teams played in the 2012 Kent Classic..the top prize money competition organised by DAVID BAXTER and hosted by the ever efficient members of Lordswood P.C. including chief organiser Mick Weston and chef for the day, Simon Mannering who manned the bar-b-que for most of the day. Apart from the weather a good competition. The MANAGEMENT DAVID BAXTER KPA GAZETTE Page 5

The day commences with games played in leagues to establish some sort of order of ability, followed in the afternoon by several competitions within a competition based upon ability. Some teams strut their stuff displaying apparent knowledge that they know-whats-goingon.in reality only David Baxter know s-whats-going-on! But it all turns out right in the end, with all teams having several games throughout the day..and as the saying goes...the cream comes to the top! During the lunchtime break another separate competition designed by David Baxter and organised by David and Martin Eggleton..the 10/10 competition, a speed game of petanque. This is one of the few days of petanque in Kent where teams travel from all parts of the U.K. to take part, including top quality teams from France and a team from Denmark. Teams of all abilities, including the Kent team that will represent England in International competitions next year..rowland Jones, Greg Davenport and Kevin Spillet. Lordswood is one of the very few venues that can host a competition of this size, playing terrain, catering and bar facilities. 8 As was reported in last month s issue of the Gazette..the Kent Juniors played particularly well in the Regional Triples Finals at Mill Rythe Hayling Island. The Kent team are young compared with most of the other Junior teams they played against...at last years finals one of the Juniors sported a manly beard.which gives some indication of the age range. RICHARD KING managed the Kent Junior Team in the finals and provides the following detailed account of the standard they achieved, and results that they accumulated. S A T U R D A Y GAME #1 versus Isle of Wight - Kent Team Jake, Ben and Charlie WON 13-7 Recorded good 1st pointing from Charlie, backed up by good 2nd play from Jake and shooting from Ben with some carreaux in the mix as well. Overall a good performance cemented a good win. GAME #2 versus Anglia Kent Team Jake, Alex and Charlie LOST Recorded again steady pointing from Charlie, with some really unlucky bounces at times, backed up well by Alex and Jake, some good shooting from Jake also covering for Ben. An epic 11/2 hr game coming back from 8-1 down to narrowly losing to game 12. A good effort showing great character. GAME #3 versus Eastern Kent Team Alex, Jake and Ben WON Recorded great team effort all round, lost an end of 5 and then bounced back with an end of 4 to level the game, and had cagey ends winning game 10 in the end. GAME #4 versus West Midlands Kent Team Alex, Jake and Ben WON Recorded some very good shooting from Ben with a minimum of 3 spot carreaux and some steady and consistent pointing from Charlie, with some good back up from Alex in middle position. GAME #5 versus Chiltern Kent Team Alex, Ben and Charlie WON 13 3 Recorded very difficult terrain, very large rocks, pointing difficult. Yet again some awesome pointing from Charlie, backed up by both Alex and Ben on a very challenging surface. A great all round team performance. GAME #6 versus East Midlands Kent Team Ben, Jake and Charlie LOST 5 13 Recorded steady pointing from all 3, shooting a little off from Ben, and a brief lapse in concentration to a loss of 5 in one end. Charlie subbed out for Alex to come in at 7 5 down, helped a little after some switching around. Finally lost the game to 5 but the score did not reflect the game. GAME #7 versus Southern Kent Team Alex, Charlie and Jake LOST 2 13 Recorded little bit of a come-down, still, got caught on the hop the first two ends losing a 5 and a 4, tried to mount a fight back but the margin was too great although a valiant effort to close the gap and mount a come-back, it was too great. Maybe the day caught up with them along with tiredness. FINISHED IN JOINT THIRD PLACE ON DAY ONE ( 4 teams with 4 wins ) with only a difference of 16 points between Kent and 2nd place. OVERALL A VERY GOOD FIRST DAY. S U N D A Y GAME #1 versus Chiltern Kent Team Jake, Ben, and Charlie LOST Recorded time for a second win? Or time for a Chiltern revenge. It came down to the last end this time round, with some awful jack movement against Kent compounded by Jake s fantastic shot to save the game with a carreaux as well, but unfortunately it flicked the jack to 3 of their boules, giving Chiltern the game. A good all round effort with some bad luck.showed good team spirit. Chilterns revenge! GAME #2 versus West Midlands Kent Jake, Alex and Charlie LOST ( Ben subbed for Jake at 9-0 down ) Recorded a bad start followed by some unlucky pointing and bad bounces, not a fantastic overall performance by the whole team. The opposition played a lot better than on Saturday. Decided to turn it around and start playing well and the fight-back began, picked up an end of 4 to make it A little more time taken and Kent could have got 5 to win game. Kent then lost the next end and the game. Finally showed character to mount a fight-back. Turned out to be a good game of character. continued KPA GAZETTE Page 8

GAME #3 versus Isle of Wight Kent Team Jake, Charlie and Ben WON 13 8 Recorded started slowly, after 2 narrow losses, found the fighting spirit again from the 2nd game, all contributed well. A good rounding up in a well deserved victory. GAME #4 versus Eastern Kent Team Alex, Jake and Ben LOST 4 13 Recorded again a slow and unsteady start by all, with momentary lack of concentration by all, but along came great team spirit, tried their best. Hard game to play with indecision throughout. GAME #5 versus East Midlands Kent Team Jake, Ben and Charlie WON 13 0 Recorded good solid start after a very long discussion off the back of the previous game and to try and get them motivated. 2 ends of 3, with some excellent 1st pointing from Charlie, backed up with good middle play from Jake, not much shooting required, but Jake stepped up well, always being close to the target. All in all a great game with a fantastic result to finish off the weekend. THE KENT TEAM FINISHED 4th, 19 POINTS BEHIND THE ISLE-OF-WIGHT JUNIORS. CONSIDERING THAT THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THAT ALL 4 KENT JUNIORS HAVE BEEN TOGETHER, OVERALL THEY PLAYED VERY WELL AND SHOWED TEAM SPIRIT AND GRIT IN FIGHTING BACK FROM BEING WELL DOWN IN A FEW GAMES. A LOT OF PROMISE FOR THE FUTURE IN THIS TEAM! Over 50 s Doubles champions for On 6 th October (012)- a surprisingly sunny Saturday the first ever Petanque competition was held at the Railway Inn, Sole Street, Cobham. The new Petanque terrain 8 pistes in all - had been finished just two days before and it was with some trepidation as to how they would play, but we were not to worry, a few large stones kicked up now and then only enhanced the play! This Invite only triples competition was a strictly fun -day held to raise funds to help give this new club a start. Selected teams were invited from as many existing clubs as possible to give them a taste of this new venue. The invite was then opened up to all players to fill the vacant spaces. continued KPA GAZETTE Page 10

Jack Blows-Adrian Emson & Syri Noble The invite was then opened up to all players to fill the vacant spaces. The day started with bacon rolls and tea and coffee was available all day. With ten triples teams the fun began. Usual Petanque rules applied but as spectators came and went, they were allowed to sub into a team so they could have a go! An extensive good quality lunch menu was available and well received. There was over 25 donated raffle prizes and a sweet stall! The winners of the Main competition was Steve Brown (Tovil - Maidstone), Becci Brown & Dan Mullins (Railway Inn) beating Neil Phillips (Tovil), Melissa Rowley and Richard Wenbane (George Inn - Meopham). The secondary Plate competition was won by Adrian Emson & Syri Noble (both Chiltern Region - Hertfordshire ) & Jack Blows (Tovil) beating Bob Gaywood & Stuart (Hartley - Longfield).
