3 Welcome Greg Zeuren, the chairman of Cambridge Football Club, explains what we re about. Cambridge FC goes into the 2013 season with a record 12 senior teams (nine men s and three women s), and with more than 600 players including our junior ranks. We es mate every tenth home in Cambridge (popula on 16,800) has at least one family member with a connec on to the club. Our growth is exci ng but it presents us with the challenge of providing suitable facili es and the on-going replacement of kit and equipment. Over the past year or two, we have significantly improved our clubrooms and changing facili es, with the installa on of gas-heated showers, upgrade of toilets and the replacement of bar and kitchen facili es. Our clubrooms have benefi ed from re-decora on over the summer, and the replacement of heaters and ligh ng. We re making progress, but con nue to look for solu ons as we near the capacity of our changing rooms. While we try to raise funds to build an addi onal changing block, we ve entered into a season-long trial use of the adjacent Cambridge Athle cs & Harriers Club grounds, enabling us to use their changing rooms as well as a fi h senior pitch. We re grateful to the athle cs club and hope we can build a strong rela onship that benefits both clubs. Our vision is to be recognised as a leading community based football club that players aspire to join; benefi ng from a suppor ve learning environment, with superior coaching, training facili es and equipment, and becoming part of a great self-funding social club atmosphere. Our five-year plan (now in year three) focuses on four key goals: 1. Nurture and retain our young players with a football and self development pathway that is considered the best in the sport. 2. Enable all our players to play at the highest level to match their desire and ability. 3. Provide self funding social and football facili es that our members consider the best in Waikato football. 4. Realise our goals through prudent financial management of our club. The bo om line is that our club is only as strong as its members and we want to encourage your par cipa on in our plans if you think you can help, or wish to know more, please get in touch with any member of our commi ee. 14 3

7 Federation 1 Chatham Cup News Rotorua United 1 Cambridge 5 A hat trick by striker Tom Woutersen helped Cambridge to a comfortable victory at Rotura United last weekend. Woutersen opened the scoring a er only four minutes, when he finished a cross from Andrew Taylor. Midway through the half, Rotorua handled in the box. Woutersen s spot kick was parried by the goalkeeper but he converted the rebound. Rotorua pulled a goal back just before the interval but Cambridge regained their composure in the second spell. A 20 metre shot from skipper Glen Carmichael cannoned off the bar for Jack Taylor to score on the follow up. Then Andrew Taylor scored his first league goal of the season before Woutersen completed his hat trick and a useful victory on the road. Strong performances came from Woutersen, Carmichael and defenders Patrick Woodlock and Adrian Clark. Home draw in oldest cup competition Cambridge have landed a home draw in their opening game of this year s ASB Chatham Cup. The club will face Auckland side Nixon Park on Anzac Day (April 25), at John Kerkhof Park, in the qualifying round, with the winner going through to the first round proper. The ASB Chatham Cup s format, like the trophy itself, is modelled on England s FA Cup and has remained rela vely unchanged over its 89 year history. It has been contested every year since 1923 apart from 1937 and three years at the end of World War Two, making it New Zealand s oldest football compe on. Not much is known about our opponents in the cup, other than they play in an Auckland Sunday league and are thought to have progressed from playing futsal. Our match is one of seven qualifying games being held throughout the Waikato/BoP on Anzac Day. Join the Cambridge FC NZ Facebook group 10 7

8 When you turn up to play football at John Kerkhof Park, have you ever wondered how the pitches got marked out? It s easy to take the white lines for granted but a huge amount of work goes into marking out our 26 senior and junior pitches, under the guidance of groundsman Josh Gifford. Without the help of Pub Charity we would struggle to find the money needed to pay for the marking every season. This season, line marking has again been made possible by a grant from Pub Club news Charity which distributes proceeds from gaming machines at Cambridge s Turf Bar and Masonic Hotel. We gratefully acknowledge Pub Charity s ongoing support for this vital func on. Cambridge E have got their season off to a flying start, leading their compe on a er two rounds. Having started with a 2 2 draw against West Hamilton in the opening game of the season, Jerry Goodin s squad followed up with a 2 0 victory at Waikato Division E Claudelands Rovers 2 last weekend. The side finished last season strongly and their early form suggests the E team will be thereabouts this me round. Today, the E team host Waikato Unicol Black at John Kerkhof Park, kick off 2.45pm.
