3 Welcome Greg Zeuren, the chairman of Cambridge Football Club, explains what we re about... THANKS Thanks to the many volunteers from Cambridge FC who worked over the summer to prepare the pitch and facili es at John Kerkhof Park, and to these companies who helped provide a much needed irriga on system. Our club has entered the 2014 winter season with high hopes for success on and off the pitch. We re fielding a record 18 senior and youth teams that s double the number of sides we fielded only five years ago and we have made huge strides in the way we operate as a club. In recent years, our ability to grow and perform at a high level of compe on has been hamstrung by facili es that struggled to keep pace with our needs. Over the past couple of seasons, we ve upgraded our showers, toilets, bar and kitchen facili es and generally improved the comforts of our clubrooms. Now we re benefi ng from our efforts over the summer when we hosted WaiBOP United games at John Kerkhof Park, giving us the income and opportunity to make vast improvements to the playing surface of our premium pitch. We ve now got an irriga on system and are upgrading the floodligh ing for our No. 2 pitch. Best of all, we ve now fundraised almost $100,000 towards the costs of a new block of six changing rooms, planned to be built in the second half of I d like to acknowledge the efforts of all club members who worked so hard to help deliver these benefits for all our members, including those juniors who will get to use them when they progress into our senior ranks. Our vision is to be recognised as a leading community based football club that players aspire to join; benefi ng from a suppor ve learning environment, with superior coaching, training facili es and equipment, and becoming part of a great self-funding social club atmosphere. Our five-year plan (now in year four) focuses on four key goals: 1. Nurture and retain our young players with a football and self development pathway that is considered the best in the sport. 2. Enable all our players to play at the highest level to match their desire and ability. 3. Provide self funding social and football facili es that our members consider the best in Waikato football. 4. Realise our goals through prudent financial management of our club. If you think you can help us achieve our goals, or wish to know more, please get in touch with any member of our commi ee. 14 3

The Old Blues were unable to field a team in rounds two and three of the compe on so withdrew, effec vely giving all the other clubs 3 0 default wins for the rest of the season. That means that regardless of this weekend s results, Cambridge will be si ng on 12 points come Saturday night. Last weekend, goals from Andrew Taylor and James Coomber were enough to give the Mike Woodlock coached Cambridge a valuable three points from a 2 1 win against Papamoa, li ing the side into third spot on the table. 7 Federation League 1 ASB Chatham Cup Cambridge successfully defended their WaiBOP Challenge Shield for a third me this season, thanks to a 94 th minute goal. Early play went Cambridge s way with Glen Carmichael giving his side the lead a er 18 minutes a er good work by Josh Clark found him clear on goal with the Unicol keeper out of posi on. A er 35 minutes, Tom Woutersen made it 2-0. That goal prompted a Unicol rally and Lloyd Robertson and Mickey Scarpa scored to level the scores at half- me. Woutersen scored his second goal in the 51 st minute when he played an innocent looking free kick into the Unicol box and the ball was watched by everyone into the net. Unicol s Kevin Doty levelled the score in the 65 th minute, se ng up a tense finish. With the game well into added me, Cambridge were awarded a free kick outside the area. When the shot rebounded off the Unicol wall, it fell to Jason Szabo whose scrambled shot was deflected by a defender towards the goal. It was shepherded over the line Golden Boot 2014 Federa on 1 Goalscorers Lge Cup Total Jack Taylor 3 3 Tom Woutersen 3 3 Kieran Hill 2 2 Glen Carmichael 2 2 Craig Hedges 1 1 Own goal 1 1 Federa on 2 Goalscorers Lge Cup Total Grant McIlmurray 4 4 Miguel Peterie 2 2 Adrian Clark 1 1 James Coomber 1 1 Andrew Taylor 1 1 by a grateful Woutersen who claimed the goal and a hat-trick. Player of the day was captain Patrick Woodlock while goalkeeper Fraser Nichols made crucial saves at key mes. Chance for another cup run A er three league wins in a row, Cambridge s focus switches this weekend to trying to pull off an upset win in the country s longest running na onal cup compe on. Cambridge face Northern League division one ou it Mangere United in a first round e of the ASB Chatham Cup at John Kerkhof Park. The match conjures warm memories of an exci ng cup run last season when Cambridge knocked out Auckland sides Nixon Park and Northern League club Waiuku, the la er in a thrilling penalty shoot-out. The wins saw Karl Dagnall s side meet eventual winners of the Northern League Premier Division, Birkenhead United, at John Kerkhof Park. The excitement of the cup drew about 450 spectators to the ground and they were treated to a spectacle in which the local side went down figh ng 4 2. This year is the 91 st Chatham Cup compe on with 120 clubs from Kerikeri in the north to Invercargill in the south, contes ng it. The ASB Chatham Cup is played along regional lines un l the quarterfinals when the last eight teams enter an open na onal draw. The 10 Northern Regional Football League premier division teams all received a bye to the second round as did Lower Hu City, Upper Hu City (both Capital Football) and Roslyn Wakari (Football South). Cambridge were fortunate to earn a bye in the preliminary round in which local rivals Matamata Swi s were eliminated a er falling 4 1 to Federa on 2 side Rotorua United. But playing Mangere United will be a decent test of Cambridge s progress this year. The South Auckland side have a reputa on for fast, skillful football and they come to Cambridge fi h in the Northern League s first division. The former Junior All White Ernesto Lopez, who once had a 14-month youth contract with Argen ne super-club Independiente, is the first division s leading goalscorer with 11 goals from seven matches. The last me our clubs met was in the Northern League second division in Join the Cambridge FC NZ Facebook group 10 7

8 FIFA U 20 World Cup Today s visitors Come along to John Kerkhof Park between 2pm and 5pm on Sunday to see the FIFA U 20 World Cup trophy as it makes its journey through all of New Zealand. The trophy held alo by superstars such as Diego Maradona and Lionel Messi is being used to promote the World Cup tournament to be held in New Zealand in May Eight matches will be played at Hamilton, showcasing some of the world s best young footballers. This Sunday, the trophy will be welcomed to Cambridge with an a ernoon of free family ac vi es. Get down to the club early to watch three women s games (11am), and then greet the trophy to our club. Mangere United are one of the newest clubs in Northern League football. In 2000 it became evident that there was a large Fijian Indian popula on in Auckland including young men who played or wished to play football with an established club. The founders of the club saw the need for a football club in Auckland to provide players of Fijian origin and chose Mangere as a suitable loca on due to the concentra on of Fijian Indians in the area. The club has a dis nctly Fijian-Indian feel with the majority of players having a Fijian-Indian origin, being either born in Fiji or resided or recently moved to New Zealand. Mangere United s war cry commences before each game. It includes all players entering into a huddle immediately prior to kick off on the field each player placing one hand in the centre and coun ng down from 3 to then yell Mangere! while thrus ng hands into the sky. 8 9
