3 Welcome I would like to extend a warm welcome to today s match officials, likewise to any East Midlands Counties League representatives, and of course to the management, players, and travelling supporters of today s opposition newly promoted to the league - Kimberley Miners Welfare FC. Last weekend, the visitors had a convincing 6-0 home win over Greenwood Meadows, who were reduced to ten men, having had Mitchel Blake sent off. In the circumstances, it would seem that Kimberley are a side who know how to make the most of a numerical advantage? We hope that you all enjoy the facilities available here at Riverside Park. During your visit however, we would politely request that you respect the facilities that we have worked hard as a club to both obtain, and maintain. Please note that the INTERIOR BUILDINGS within the ground are designated as STRICTLY NO SMOKING AREAS in accordance with current legislation. As ever, thanks for your attendance, I hope both sides can keep eleven men on the pitch, and overall that you enjoy the game? All the best - Steve Chamberlain (Editor) DISCLAIMER: The opinions and views expressed throughout this publication, are not necessarily those of Barrow Town Football Club, or its officials or players. 6 Match Report: Barrow Town V South Normanton Athletic It s Three Straight Wins for the Riversiders after a Blistering First Half 15 Minute Spell. Goals from Dave Coleman, Lloyd Tapper and Luke Plummer ensured that the Riversiders came away with their one hundred percent record still intact. The opening exchanges were shaded by the opposition, efforts that were rewarded on ten minutes when Nathan Benger slotted home after a defensive mix up. This seemed to wake the Riversiders, who then started to ask more from the South Normanton back line. The visitors to this point had defended resolutely, denying the Riversiders any penetration in front of goal. On 32 minutes, Dave Coleman bought Barrow level, after a shot from Joe Hanlon was well saved by the keeper, but the rebound fell to Coleman who smashed the ball into the net from eight yards. This prompted the hosts into a ten minute spell of free flowing, attractive football, that was worth the entrance fee alone. Lloyd Tapper cut in from the left hand side (as we have seen many times already this season), to curl a twenty five yard strike right into the top corner to give Barrow the lead. The Riversiders still on high from gaining the upper hand, created a two goal cushion at half time, when on forty minutes Left Back Luke Plummer, found himself in an advanced position. He received the ball on the left, then cut inside to release a speculative thirty yarder that inched in to the top left corner. This turned out to be the winner, and (continued) R i v e r s i d e r s R e v i e w K i m b e r l e y M W P a g e 6

7 probably in all fairness saved the lads from the wrath of Manager Liam East. Barrow probably played better in the second half, but they could not convert a hatful of chances to further enhance the score line. On the hour mark, Nathan Benger secured his brace, and made sure of a nervous half hour for the home side. He reduced the deficit to one, scoring from a shot from inside the box that beat keeper Jamie Witham to his left. Barrow though far from trying to hang, on kept to their second half game plan and had plenty of chances to increase the score line. For the last five minutes, The Shiners pushed influential Center Half Andrew Mottershead forward, and really got at Barrow. However, the Riversiders back line held firm, and saw the game out by hitting the corners, and eventually running down the clock. Manager Liam East after the game admitting "In the two previous games we raised the bar to a new level. But I have to say I thought we were well under that bar today in terms of the way we want to play. What is very pleasing though, is that we have shown today is that when we are not at our best, we can grind out a result which is an attribute needed if we want to succeed". Final Score: Barrow Town 3-2 South Normanton Athletic Barrow Town: Witham; Sharman; Plummer; Portwood; Turner; Law; Lever; Whatley; Hanlon; Coleman; Tapper. Subs: Davis; Simon. 9 History of Barrow Town Football Club Football in Barrow upon Soar has its' origins in the late 19th century. The population of the village at that time would have numbered around 1000, compared with around 7000 today. The team, known as the Barrow Rising Stars were based at The Railway Inn (now the Soar bridge), and played their football near the Mill. Members of the Loughborough and District League, they were obviously formidable opposition as their record shows they were winners of Division 1 in 1901/2 and 1902/3 and also Division 2 Champions in 1911/12. Cup success included the Bass Charity Cup, Rolleston Cup, and the County Cup. In one particular season four trophies came their way. The early years of the century saw the birth of the Old Boys (now Barrow Town). This team also played down "Mill Lane", and comprised mainly of boys from the village grammar school, their record though did not compare with the stars. Immediately prior to the First World War another Barrow team, The Trinity, were gaining prominence. Also members of the Loughborough and District League Division 1, they rivalled R i v e r s i d e r s R e v i e w K i m b e r l e y M W P a g e 9

10 the stars as top team from the village. Other members of the league at that time were Quorn Havelock, Quorn Emanuel, and no less than four teams from Sileby (Imps, Excelsior, Amateurs and Vics). A referee's match fee in 1913 was 2/6d and football boots 6/- per pair (30p). Trinity FC had an illustrious spell from 1918 onwards and during an 18 year period picked up a league championship, the league cup, and the Rolleston Cup. The Trinity's glories could not last and 1930 saw the emergence of 'The Gunners' and 'Barrow Athletic', The Old Boys reappearing in The Old Boys were members of the Leics. Mutual League and for a while were based at Cotes Road, before moving to North Street and joining the Loughborough Alliance. After the Second World War, The Old Boys reformed in 1947 and following a public meeting at The Working Men's Club, entered the Leicestershire Senior League with immediate impact. They reached the semi-final of The Senior Cup but were beaten by Whitwick Colliery. The competition also included Leicester City Reserves. In 1968/69 The Old Boys finished runners-up in Division 2 and were promoted to what was then Division 1. Managed by much respected local man Billy Williamson, they were also winners of The Loughborough Charity Cup and The Sileby Cup, (later renamed The Billy Williamson trophy in his honour). Soon after Barrow moved to their current headquarters at Riverside Park under the new title of Barrow Town. The success of 68/69 was emulated by the team of 92/93 managed by two more local favourites Arthur Chadburn and Colin Sykes. This team gained promotion to the Premier R i v e r s i d e r s R e v i e w K i m b e r l e y M W P a g e 10

11 Division as champions. The 94/95 season was a landmark in Barrow's history with a number of records being broken. Highest ever placing s for the 1st and 2nd teams. Ian Hunter's haul of 61 league and cup goals. 119 goals scored, with an 18 game unbeaten run-in, culminating in being pipped to the Premiership title by one point. The team again consisted of the nucleus of the promotion winning side, under the same successful management team. In recent years, the club has grown in stature and maintained their Premier Division status. Three times winners of The Loughborough Charity Cup, defeating Coalville 3-1 in 96/97, Ibstock 1-0 in 98/99 (the competition's centenary year), and under Richard Pitman defeating Shepshed Dynamo on penalties in 2000/1 after the teams were locked at 2-2 after extra time. Riverside Park has undergone several improvements in recent years, most notably the addition of floodlighting for both the main pitch and training area; a new clubhouse and changing rooms; a 50 seat grandstand; covered standing paddock; and new dugouts. The recent amalgamation of all junior, youth and senior teams, makes Barrow Town one of the largest football organisations in the county, which now caters for soccer from under eight to senior level. 17 History of Kimberley Miners Welfare FC Kimberley Miners Welfare Football Club was formed in 1926, one year after the opening of the Miners Welfare. The early years were spent playing at the Mill Field ground, approximately ½ a mile North of Digby Street. In 1932 KMWFC moved to the new recreation ground, Digby Street, situated adjacent to Digby Colliery and its cricket ground. Initially, Digby Street was solely a playing field with teams changing in Tommy Bird s (pronounced Tommy Bod s, in the local dialect) front room. It was a lengthy walk, for players and officials to Digby Street, because Tommy lived in a house supplied for workers, on site, at the Giltbrook Leather Works. In the late 1950s, changing facilities moved, to the Miners Welfare Bowling Alley underneath the building, which meant an even longer walk for players and officials! KMWFC have played at Digby Street for 81 years but, it hasn t been continuous. The club played at the Wolsey Sports Ground for 1 season, 1974/75 (situated were Sainsbury s Car Park now is, in Kimberley Town Centre), because the construction of the new A610 Eastwood & Kimberley Bypass took away part of the ground and made it unusable. R i v e r s i d e r s R e v i e w K i m b e r l e y M W P a g e 17

18 It wasn t until the 1995/6 season that changing facilities were provided on the ground. A 7,500 grant from the National Lottery, and an equivalent donation from Chairman Neil Johnson, enabled the club to buy, transport and erect, the unwanted changing rooms from Calverton Cricket Club. This was around the time of the clubs most successful era under the guidance of Paul Horry. Kimberley MW won every trophy they could before Horry resigned and was replaced by Steve Hobster on a caretaker basis before the appointment of George Hulley for his first spell at the club. Hulley left and was replaced by the popular Alf Stacey and Steve Towle before Hulley then returned to the club for a second spell. In 2012 KMWFC were given a 15 year tenure on The Stag Ground. First Reverse of the Season On Wednesday evening The Riversiders suffered their first defeat of this season s campaign, going down 3-2 to Holbrook Sports at the Fischer-Future Heat Stadium. Trailing 2-0 at half-time to a brace of goals from Samuel Ridgard, The Riversiders reduced the deficit in the second half with a strike from Will Richards on 57 minutes. An equaliser came via a Jamie Sharman strike on 78 minutes, before a strike from Niall Mather on 84 minutes, consigned Barrow to their first defeat of the season.
