3 Welcome I would like to extend a warm welcome to today s match officials, likewise to any East Midlands Counties League representatives, and of course to the management, players, and travelling supporters of today s opposition St Andrews. Over the Bank Holiday weekend, the visitors were on the end of two defeats, whereas we managed a creditable point away at Holwell Sports. Having also gone down ourselves 2-3 at home recently to Kimberley Miners Welfare, we hope for a better result today. We hope that you all enjoy the facilities available here at Riverside Park. During your visit however, we would politely request that you respect the facilities that we have worked hard as a club to both obtain, and maintain. Please note that the INTERIOR BUILDINGS within the ground are designated as STRICTLY NO SMOKING AREAS in accordance with current legislation. As ever, thanks for your attendance, I hope both sides can keep eleven men on the pitch, and overall that you enjoy the game? 5 Match Report: Holbrook Sports V Barrow Town The Riversiders suffered their first reverse of the season in the midweek away fixture at Holbrook Sports. The prospect of the sixty two mile round trip up the M1 into Derbyshire must have been an off putting one, as the home side swept into a 2-0 nil lead at the half-time break. The difference at the interval was a brace from Sam Ridgard, and despite having Paul Fisher dismissed, the hosts were keen to keep very much on the front foot. The Riversiders rallied during the second half, and with a goal from Will Richards on 57 minutes, which reduced the deficit to 2-1. On 78 minutes, Jamie Sharman seemed to have gotten Barrow back into the points with an equalising goal, to make the score 2-2. However, the three points were secured for Holbrook, when Niall Mather scored what turned out to be the winner 6 minutes from time on 84 minutes. Dave Coleman smashed a penalty kick against the crossbar and away to safety, to compound a miserable away trip for The Riversiders. 6 Match Report: Barrow Town V Kimberley Miners Welfare The Holbrook hangover continued for The Riversiders, as they suffered their second reverse of the season, and their first at Riverside Park, to newly promoted Kimberley Miners Welfare. Dan Pownall opened the scoring for the visitors on 9 minutes. Chris Davis who had been promoted to the starting line-up after a series of substitute appearances so far this season, equalised for Barrow just after the half hour. Pownall completed his brace for Kimberley eight minutes later to ensure that Barrow trailed at half-time by 1-2. The score remained the same until five minutes from time, when the visitors increased their lead to 1-3 through a goal from Mark Smith. Despite a last minute effort from Dave Coleman, Barrow were consigned to their second loss on the spin, going down 2-3 at the final whistle. Barrow Town: King; Sharman; Packwood; Portwood; Walton; Law; Davis; Whatley; Lever; Coleman; Tapper. Subs: Litchfield; Culverwell; Sibson. 7 Match Report: Holwell Sports V Barrow Town The Riversiders made the relatively short trip to Welby Road Asfordby, for a traditional Bank Holiday local derby fixture against Holwell Sports. Having suffered the loss (for probably most of the remainder of the season) of skipper Ryan Whatley through injury, The Riversiders boss Liam East had to shuffle the pack somewhat. Connor Packwood, and Tyler Sibson featuring in the starting line-up, and midfield dynamo Chris Davis, retaining his place after recent impressive performances. The first half was a scoreless affair, which was not a surprise given the weather conditions. Despite the driving rain, Luke Plummer continued his scoring streak to give Barrow the lead on the hour. Kieran Foster netted an equaliser for the home side however, to deny Barrow an away win, and ensure that they returned to riverside Park with just the one point. Given the two recent back to back defeats, and the playing conditions, the point gained was an acceptable return on the days proceedings. Barrow Town: King; Sharman; Packwood; Portwood; Walton; Davis; Law; Sibson; Coleman; Tapper; Plummer 1. Subs: Simon; Culverwell; Finnemore. 9 History of Barrow Town Football Club Football in Barrow upon Soar has its' origins in the late 19th century. The population of the village at that time would have numbered around 1000, compared with around 7000 today. The team, known as the Barrow Rising Stars were based at The Railway Inn (now the Soar bridge), and played their football near the Mill. Members of the Loughborough and District League, they were obviously formidable opposition as their record shows they were winners of Division 1 in 1901/2 and 1902/3 and also Division 2 Champions in 1911/12. Cup success included the Bass Charity Cup, Rolleston Cup, and the County Cup. In one particular season four trophies came their way. The early years of the century saw the birth of the Old Boys (now Barrow Town). This team also played down "Mill Lane", and comprised mainly of boys from the village grammar school, their record though did not compare with the stars. Immediately prior to the First World War another Barrow team, The Trinity, were gaining prominence. Also members of the Loughborough and District League Division 1, they rivalled R i v e r s i d e r s R e v i e w S t A n d r e w s P a g e 9

10 the stars as top team from the village. Other members of the league at that time were Quorn Havelock, Quorn Emanuel, and no less than four teams from Sileby (Imps, Excelsior, Amateurs and Vics). A referee's match fee in 1913 was 2/6d and football boots 6/- per pair (30p). Trinity FC had an illustrious spell from 1918 onwards and during an 18 year period picked up a league championship, the league cup, and the Rolleston Cup. The Trinity's glories could not last and 1930 saw the emergence of 'The Gunners' and 'Barrow Athletic', The Old Boys reappearing in The Old Boys were members of the Leics. Mutual League and for a while were based at Cotes Road, before moving to North Street and joining the Loughborough Alliance. After the Second World War, The Old Boys reformed in 1947 and following a public meeting at The Working Men's Club, entered the Leicestershire Senior League with immediate impact. They reached the semi-final of The Senior Cup but were beaten by Whitwick Colliery. The competition also included Leicester City Reserves. In 1968/69 The Old Boys finished runners-up in Division 2 and were promoted to what was then Division 1. Managed by much respected local man Billy Williamson, they were also winners of The Loughborough Charity Cup and The Sileby Cup, (later renamed The Billy Williamson trophy in his honour). Soon after Barrow moved to their current headquarters at Riverside Park under the new title of Barrow Town. The success of 68/69 was emulated by the team of 92/93 managed by two more local favourites Arthur Chadburn and Colin Sykes. This team gained promotion to the Premier R i v e r s i d e r s R e v i e w S t A n d r e w s P a g e 10

11 Division as champions. The 94/95 season was a landmark in Barrow's history with a number of records being broken. Highest ever placing s for the 1st and 2nd teams. Ian Hunter's haul of 61 league and cup goals. 119 goals scored, with an 18 game unbeaten run-in, culminating in being pipped to the Premiership title by one point. The team again consisted of the nucleus of the promotion winning side, under the same successful management team. In recent years, the club has grown in stature and maintained their Premier Division status. Three times winners of The Loughborough Charity Cup, defeating Coalville 3-1 in 96/97, Ibstock 1-0 in 98/99 (the competition's centenary year), and under Richard Pitman defeating Shepshed Dynamo on penalties in 2000/1 after the teams were locked at 2-2 after extra time. Riverside Park has undergone several improvements in recent years, most notably the addition of floodlighting for both the main pitch and training area; a new clubhouse and changing rooms; a 50 seat grandstand; covered standing paddock; and new dugouts. The recent amalgamation of all junior, youth and senior teams, makes Barrow Town one of the largest football organisations in the county, which now caters for soccer from under eight to senior level. 17 St Andrews Football Club. History of St Andrews The Rifle Butt public house in New Bridge Street Leicester was demolished along with a whole community to accommodate the extension of The Leicester Infirmary. This was to the birth place of The licensee of the Butts as it had become known was the former Leicestershire wicket keeper Paddy Corral. The lads that drank in the pub at the time were all sports mad. There was a boxing ring, a gym upstairs and the pub darts team were M & B Champions many times. The football team played friendly matches for a number of years, but in 1973 when the public house along with the surrounding houses were demolished, it was decided to enter a league and call the club St Andrews F.C. The club was accepted into the Leicestershire City League and during the following twelve year period they won forty four honours including The Premier Division Championship on four successive occasions and The Junior Cup twice. Following the completion of a clubhouse at Canal Street the club were elected to The Leicestershire Senior League in Since their election the club have added a further forty one honours including: R i v e r s i d e r s R e v i e w S t A n d r e w s P a g e 17

Just across the Aylestone Road at the highly successful Y.M.C.A Juniors FC. The committee were devastated when the national body of the organisation evicted them from the site. During the winter months of the 2001/02 season, the senior officers of St Andrews and their counterparts at Y.M.C.A. held a number of meetings and decided to amalgamate. Since the amalgamation and the reopening of the bridge, steady progress has been maintained. The ground at Canal Street has developed to a level six criteria. On the playing side the club run teams from seven years old to veterans. The success level is high throughout the club. With a team of mainly youth team graduates, the senior team reached two cup semi-finals and finished high enough in the senior league to become proud founder members of the East Midland Counties League finishing a creditable ninth. In the Season, the club had a tremendous run in The F.A. Vase, only eventually being defeated 1-2 after two legs, at the Semi Final stage by eventual runners up West Auckland Town.
