AN AMERICAN SITCOM? Well it s not every wet and windy Wednesday evening that serves up a game like the one against Nailsea United this week. They are obviously on fire at the moment, having scored 15 goals in their previous two matches, including 5 against the league s last remaining unbeaten side and todays visitors Cutters Friday. Whilst we leaked eight goals which is obviously unacceptable, I felt that during the first 30 minutes we played some great entertaining football and completely deserved to be 3-1 up. Conceding three goals in the last five minutes of the first half hit us hard and it was then an uphill task to get back into the match after the break. Both good and bad news have hit the club in the passed week. The good news is that Connor Sidley-Adams has been invited to attend England Under 18 trials at Lilleshall early in December. Connor has already played in international trials throughout the last month and we wish him the very best of luck at Lilleshall. The bad news, from the club s point of view, is that two of our players have left the club this week in attempts to play at a higher level, which we must applaud. Stefan Phillips has stepped up three divisions and will try to force his way into Bridgwater s Southern League side, and Western League club Elmore have lured Lee Smyth away from us. Whilst both players will be hard to replace, we wish them well with their new clubs. Both players will link up with former Minehead team-mates, which shows that the club remains capable of producing quality players. The difficult part is hanging onto them! 4 Minehead AFC - (Errea Somerset County Premier League) Page 4 Good afternoon everyone as we welcome to The Rec our opponents Cutters Friday, who have started the season well. A fortnight ago we travelled to Bristol to play Cutters in a Somerset Senior Cup match and for the second year running turned up with a severely weakened side, ending up well beaten with a 6-1 result. We were indebted to young Sam Armitage who played through a back injury as our other keepers Chris and Connor were missing, but after we had pulled back to 2-1 midway through the first half Cutters gradually took control and the goals flowed consistently for the rest of the game. If you include Matt Cracknell and Luke Bloys (our long term injuries), we were also missing Stefan and Nick Phillips, Jack Groves-Furse, Chris Meredith and Connor Sidley-Adams. To add to the woe we couldn t call on Chris Yeates, Rob Gurnett or Andy Hall. However the guys who did play deserve credit for refusing to be outplayed, however the unbeaten home side proved too good for us. Since that day, both teams have faced the league s current in form team Nailsea United, and have both come off (Rants no longer being allowed) considerably second best. Before kick off today we will be observing a one minute silence in respect of Creech St Michael secretary Brian Rowlinson who has sadly passed away. Brian worked tirelessly for his club as well as being a member of both Somerset FA council, and the league management committee. The funeral is next Thursday at Taunton Crematorium (3pm). Finally, I would like to wish both our outgoing players (see Robbie & Newy s page) every success with their new clubs. Naturally it is bad news for us, but we must encourage players who look to move up the football pyramid, whilst hoping they remember their roots if things do not work out for them. As always there have been numerous fixture changes, but hopefully all details on the website and throughout the programme are currently correct. If you need a printed version please see Trish or ask behind the bar. See you all at the next home game, against Stockwood Green on Saturday 3rd December, but don t forget the Reserves who have an important league match here next Saturday against Bishops Lydeard Colts. 5 Minehead AFC - (Errea Somerset County Premier League) Page 5 The Gerry Hatrick Man of the Match Trophy, is awarded to the Minehead player whose performance most catches the eye at each home match. Adjudicated by the mysterious Gerry Hatrick (pronounced geriatric ), the player winning the accolade on the most occasions will be presented with the prestigious Gerry Hatrick trophy at the end of the season. The Star Ratings, give a more detailed insight into each player s individual form fluctuations throughout the length of the season, but should be largely taken as a bit of fun. 7 WEDNESDAY 16th NOVEMBER v NAILSEA UNITED 16/11/11 Total Games Average Wins Jack Page Mike Mullen Chris Newbold Lee Smyth Matt Cracknell Craig Carr Sam Armitage Chris Meredith Connor Sidley Adams Paul Smyth Rich Binding Stefan Phillips Rob Gurnett Jack Groves Furse James Browning Ben Flatley Harry Scatchard Guy Burns Luke Freeman Nick Phillips Lee Todd Andy Hall Chris Yeates

Minehead AFC - (Errea Somerset County Premier League) Page 6 MINEHEAD (3) 4 NAILSEA UNITED (4) 8 Wednesday 16th November 2011 With their first taste of senior football at Irnham Road since early October, Minehead s supporters, who turned out in good numbers despite being a very wet evening, were treated to a goal fest by their highly placed opponents Nailsea United, whose wins puts them into second position in the league table. But there was no sign of the visitors hot goalscoring form which had seen them net 15 goals in their last two matches during the opening exchanges and though play was fast and went from end to end it was Minehead who looked the more likely to open the scoring and after 15 minutes Guy Burns was released on the left flank and his early cross was perfect for the oncoming Lee Smyth whose crisp first time shot from the edge of the box was superbly parried but Smyth managed to convert the loose ball to put the blues one up. Five minutes later a fierce left footed shot from Rich Binding was pushed around the post for a fruitless corner then Nailsea managed their first serious attempt at goal when a cross come shot from Steve Lester came back off the inside of the post and into the clutches of Connor Sidley- Adams in the Minehead goal. But it was Minehead s attack that was looking the liveliest and in particular Jack Page, whose jinking run from the byeline took him past two defender and his angled strike from 15 yards out was too good for the keeper who could not prevent it ending up in the top corner to double the home score. Within a minute the visitors had halved the deficit when Matt Long scored from the edge of the box, but Minehead responded swiftly with Guy Burns converting Jack Page s centre to make restore the two-goal advantage. Being in relative control five minutes from half time against the in-form side in the league Minehead appeared to freeze and three goals in quick succession meant the visitors held a 4-3 advantage at half time. Firstly James Lee scored with a well placed lob then after Darren Bloomfield shot into the side netting Stuart Lee equalised with a header. On the verge of half time Matt Long scored his second to put Nailsea in front for the first time in the match. Nick Phillips replaced Andy Hall for the second half as a shell-shocked Minehead came out looking to get back into the game but just two minutes into the second period Harry Hope had made the blues task that much harder making it 5-3 with a long shot which curled into the top corner. Paul Smyth showed that Minehead were not ready to roll over

Minehead AFC - (Errea Somerset County Premier League) Page 7 Despite being a particularly wet night, a good sized crowd turned out for the first home match since 12th October when his header was fumbled by the keeper and the ball trickled over the line to reduce the deficit to just one goal. Minehead took the game to the visitors but on the hour Guy Burns was booked for bad language. With the match now in it s final quarter it was still anybody s game but two goals in two minutes then put the result beyond any real doubt. Firstly a clumsy challenge by Page which earned him a booking enabled Matt Long to covert his third from the penalty spot, then James Lee was in the right place at the right time to score into an empty net. Harry Scatchard replaced the tiring Jack Page, who had played a full 90 minutes in a schoolboy match earlier in the day, but with 10 minutes remaining James Lee scored his second and Nailsea s 8 th to finish off the scoring. A minute later Lee Smyth committed a foul and having received a harsh yellow card for his challenge was shown a straight red in response to a comment made to the inconsistent referee. Declan Green replaced the hobbling Mike Mullen for the final few minutes. 26 Minehead AFC - (Errea Somerset County Premier League) Page 26 A West Country Round-Up provided by Tim Rawlings Tragedy has struck Taunton Blackbrook football club with the news that up-and-coming young player Santino James was killed in a recent car crash. The 20-year-old, a plumber from Yeovil, died in a three car collision near Chicklade in Wiltshire on Tuesday 8 th November. As a mark of respect the club postponed their following fixture against recent visitors to the Rec Nailsea United. Taunton Blackbrook manager Kevin Evans said At this moment the football club s thoughts are with Santino s family and our deepest commiserations go out to them. We are all shell-shocked. A young lad of 20 losing his life in such circumstances with all his life ahead of him is tragic. At times like this football is irrelevant it just shows how precious life is. Santino was a true character on the pitch and in the dressing room and gave nothing less than 100%. Taunton Blackbrook returned to Errea Somerset County Premier League action last Saturday and gained an excellent point in a 3-3 draw at Langford Rovers. The Taunton based side fought back from being 3-1 down to snatch a point with goals from Chris Astley, Nicholas Izzard and David Richardson. The result was enough to ensure Langford Rovers stayed in fourth place above Ashton and Backwell who beat visitors Watchet by a 2-0 scoreline. Ashton took the lead after 35 minutes when Jack Dicker converted a Riggie Briggs cross and the points were sealed on 78 minutes as Crooks beat the offside trap to score. There are now new leaders of the Premier Division as Cheddar took over the summit following a 3-2 home win over previous leaders Berrow. At the bottom of the table there is still little joy for St. George Easton in Gordano as they crashed to a heavy 8-1 home defeat at the hands of Stockwood Green. The visitors built up a 4-0 half-time lead through strikes from Jake James, Rob Martin(2) and Jake Brain. Daniel Jones and Brain were on target after the interval before St. George pulled a goal back to make the score 6-1. A comprehensive afternoon s work was completed when Lee Millard and Miles Sullyman netted for Stockwood Green. There were also plenty of goals for Shirehampton as they fired in six goals without reply at home against Clevedon United. Dan Griffiths converted a Tony Beacham cross after five minutes and the home side doubled the lead seven minutes later as Beacham netted from the penalty spot. Shirehampton were in no mood to ease off and they went 3-0 up when Scott Bamford drilled home ten minutes before the interval. After the break Max Western volleyed Shirehampton s fourth goal and things got worse for Clevedon when Bamford fired his second goal on 74 minutes before the final word went to Beacham who netted his second to complete an emphatic 6-0 victory. Perhaps the most surprising result of the day saw previously unbeaten Cutters Friday beaten 5-0 at in-form Nailsea United. The result sees Nailsea climb to third spot in the table, just four points behind new leaders Cheddar. Cutters manager Neil Soper said To be fair to Nailsea they played well. But after a good start, we fell away and suffered a blow when we lost striker Ryan Bending after ten minutes with a calf injury. Andy Nash also missed a couple of early chances. Nailsea took the lead after fifteen minutes when Ryan Bloomfield s cross set up Ryan King to score. Another cross created the opening for Jim Lee to double the advantage and Matt Long made a great run on the stroke of half-time to make it 3-0. Darren Bloomfield made it 4-0 early in the second-half and Lee completed the emphatic scoreline to take his personal goal tally to 22 for the season. Bath City are the only Non-league Westcountry side left in this season s F.A. Cup after achieving a fine 1-1 draw at League Two

Minehead AFC - (Errea Somerset County Premier League) Page 27 A West Country Round-Up provided by Tim Rawlings outfit Dagenham and Redbridge in the First Round Proper last Saturday. Former Exeter City striker Sean Canham opened the scoring for Bath after eleven minutes as he coolly slotted home following some poor Dagenham defending. Bath held the lead until the 41 st minute when Brian Woodhall headed home a John Nurse cross. However, the big controversy came ten minutes into the second-half when Dagenham keeper Chris Lewington brought down Romans player Marley Watkins just outside the box but only received a yellow card from referee Graham Scott to the dismay of the Bath City bench and their travelling 183 supporters. Bath will now replay during the coming midweek at Twerton Park for the right to a Second Round tie at home against either Walsall or Exeter City. Bideford are enjoying a fine start to their Evo-Stik Southern League South and West Division campaign, highlighted by last Saturday s 3-2 home win over well placed North Leigh. The Robins lie in second place, just three points behind leaders Hungerford Town. On Saturday a brace from Matt Andrew and a further strike from Matt Bye clinched Bideford s tenth win of the season. Tiverton Town, in the same league as Bideford, are experiencing a resurgence in form after their latest 2-1 win at Halesowen Town. The home side took the lead on 27 minutes through Lee Chilton but Tiverton bounced back as Josh Searle conveted a cross by Alex Faux after 33 minutes and Harry Nodwell hit the winner nine minutes from time. After a poor start to the season Bridgwater Town are starting to put some useful results together. Last Saturday saw them win 2-1 at home against bottom club Stourport Swifts thanks to goals from Cornwall and Pearce in front of a crowd of 152. The result lifts the Somerset club into tenth place in the table, above both Taunton Town and Tiverton. Truro City is a football club which has experienced a meteoric rise up the pyramid in recent years. However, all is not rosy at the present time as supporters heard at a public meeting called recently to discuss the club s future. On the field this season, under the management of former Plymouth Argyle stalwart Lee Hodges, Truro have made a decent start to their first campaign in the Blue Square Conference South. However, off the pitch financial problems are beginning to surface as the club faced a winding up order initiated by Her Majesty s Revenue and Customs last month in a London High Court. The tax authorities were held at bay, at least until January 16 th when the club must settle their Inland Revenue debt. There are also other problems at Treyew Road resulting in the players not being paid on time and chairman Kevin Heaney has admitted that outside help is urgently needed. One of the issues Heaney has highlighted is that the team s progress has moved much faster than the infrastructure of the club itself. He went on to say, The trouble we ve had is that in just seven years we ve got five promotions, so we have kind of outgrown the set-up. He told supporters that the Football Conference had warned Truro about the need to increase their commercial income and to improve relations with the fans. At the public meeting Heaney also pleaded for tangible support from the Cornish Business Community and he claimed that a successful outcome to the proposal to build a new stadium and share it with Cornish Pirates rugby club is essential to City s survival in their current guise. Without the stadium the club is finished, as we cannot go forward, Heaney stressed. Worrying times for a club that visited the Rec not too long ago.

Minehead AFC - (Errea Somerset County Premier League) Page 28 MINEHEAD AFC Minehead Football Club was originally founded in 1889 and spent their early years in local competitions. They entered the Western League at the start of the 1924/25 season, but after Division 2 had diminished to just 8 clubs returned to the Somerset Senior League for 1928/29, remaining in the league until WWII. After the hostilities the club enjoyed success in firstly the North Devon Senior League, followed by the East Devon and Exeter League, returning to the Western League ranks for the 1949/50 season. The club turned semi-professional in 1950/51 under former Exeter City captain Steve Walker, and in the late fifties became one of the strongest forces in the league under the guidance of Bristol based Ron Gingell. Though they remained in the Western League for 23 seasons, in spite of being one of the most consistent teams in the league, Minehead never actually won the Western League Championship, although they finished as runnersup twice (in 66/67 and 71/72). They joined the Southern League in 1972, finishing 5th in Division One (South). The following season saw them improve slightly by finishing 4th, followed by 3rd in 74/75. In the 75/76 season the club improved yet again to carry off the league title as champions, plus winning the Southern League Merit Cup by scoring more goals than any other club in the competition (all 3 divisions). Andy Leitch lead the charge with 36 goals, (the highest tally recorded while Minehead were a Southern League side), closely followed by Jimmy Jenkins and Derek Bryant who both managed 30. The next season, the most successful in it's roller-coaster history, saw Minehead finish as runners-up to Wimbledon, as well as reaching the 2nd Round Proper of the FA Cup for the first time, when they were beaten 2-1 by Portsmouth at Fratten Park, witnessed by more than 16,000 spectators. At this stage the club were considered to be amongst the top 6 non league clubs in the country, reflected by being invited to represent England in the Non League Anglo-Italian Cup competition during Having won both matches at home, Minehead lost both return matches in Italy, one of which was against Udinese. Within a few short years Udinese had progressed through to the Italian 1st Division, with their ground being chosen as a venue for the World Cup finals in More history was created the following season when striker Andy Leitch found his name in the record books by scoring in 6 consecutive FA Cup matches, equalling Jeff Astle's record. Leitch had a scorching header hooked off the line with the keeper beaten during Minehead's 2nd Round Proper tie at home to Exeter City, which would have given him the record outright. Minehead were beaten 3-0 by the Devon club, a tie which attracted the club's second highest home attendance of 3,050. Though the club were still a cup force to be reckoned with, their stunning strike partnership of Leitch, Jenkins and Bryant parted company. Struggling to score goals they were relegated from the Southern League Premier Division, finishing 17th of 20, just one point from safety. However the name had been put firmly on the non league map. On the occasion of the Southern League's centenary year (1994) manager Bob Boyd was chosen as one of the top one hundred managers in it's history, where his name stands proudly alongside such names as Malcolm Allison, Ron Atkinson and Barry Fry. The 79/80 season saw a restructuring of the non-league pyramid, with the creation of the Alliance Premier League (now the Conference

Minehead AFC - (Errea Somerset County Premier League) Page 29 League). The Southern League, losing 13 clubs in the switch, opted for a Midland/Southern divide. Minehead competed in the Midland Division, and after leading the division from January, finally finished as runners-up to Bridgend. Season 80/81 saw them finish 12th, however the club were starting to experience financial problems, and the decision was made to withdraw from the Southern League at the end of the 82/83 campaign. Back in the Western League, the team were brought back to reality with an 8-0 thrashing at Frome Town on the opening Saturday of the new season. Relegated to the First Division in 1989, the following year saw things get progressively worse, finishing bottom of the lower league. With no relegation that season, the blues lived to fight again, and the following season manager Andy Hodgson led a locally based team to the First Division Championship, gaining a record number of points. Teenage striker Gareth Morgan scoring 44 times in 40 appearances, which remains a Western League record for the club. Further off the pitch problems soon hit the club and in the 93/94 season with 6 points being deducted the side were relegated again, staying in the First Division until 98/99 when they won the championship. Their only league defeat came in the final match, away to neighbours Ilfracombe, having been presented with the trophy several games earlier. The high point of this season again being a lethal strike partnership, this time between Nick Woon, Gareth Morgan and Jason Charlesworth. All three appearing in the Western League s top six scorers, with over 30 goals each. On their arrival back in the Premier Division finances had dried up, with many of the successful team moving on. Woon stayed, and was again amongst the top scorers in the league, however his goals alone could not prevent the side finishing bottom, avoiding relegation due to a restructuring of the league. The club were relegated the following season however, and languished near the bottom of the First Division ever since. At the end of the season the club finished ten points adrift at the bottom of the table, and having flirted with relegation for several seasons were relegated into the Errea Somerset County League Premier Division. Robbie Hopkins remains in charge with Paul Newbold as his assistant as the club looks to re-establish itself and to build again for the future.
