Corpus Christi Hooks (5-1) at Springfield Cardinals (2-4) Thursday, April 11, 2013 Hammons Field Springfield, MO 7:09 pm ON THE RECORD: 5-1 Home 0-0 Road 2-0 Series 1-0 Sweeps W 4 Streak 5-1 Last 5 5-1 Last 10 BROOM WORK: Corpus Christi blanked Tulsa 6-0 on Tuesday night at Whataburger Field, securing the first series sweep of the season. The Hooks, who slugged six doubles - plus a Jiovanni Mier home run, thrived due to dominant pitching. Bobby Doran did not walk a batter and fanned four over five one-hit innings. The former Texas Tech Red Raider set down the final 13 men he faced. Nick Tropeano followed with the four-inning save, striking out six without walking a batter. RF Domingo Santana cracked three doubles, drove in two and scored a run. SS Mier went 3-for-3 with two RBIs, a walk and sacrifice fly. DH Austin Wates and CF George Springer each doubled and scored twice. Both Santana and Springer feature a four-game hit streak. Corpus Christi went 6-for-15 (.400) with runners in scoring position and still stranded 12 on base. The defending Texas League Champion Springfield Cardinals now host the Hooks for a three-game series at Hammons Field. PAGE 2 WOJO IN QUEUE: RHP Asher Wojciechowski is Corpus Christi s second starter tonight, following up an impressive debut Saturday. Wojo held the Cards to just 1 hit & 1 walk over 5.0 innings while striking out 7, retiring the last 11 men he faced. Going back to the end of last season, Asher has allowed just 1 earned run over his last 4 starts for a 0.40 ERA, striking out 18 against 3 walks in 22.2 innings. Opponents are batting.118 (9-for-76) during this stretch. Acquired via trade from Toronto last July, he was originally a 1st-round (41st overall) pick in 2010. Wojo is rated as the No. 15 HOU prospect, according to MLB.com, entering the 2013 season. He went a combined 9-5 w/ a 3.09 ERA & 1.15 WHIP in 26 starts between Dunedin & Corpus Christi, striking out 110 against 36 walks (3.06). During tenure with the Hooks, Wojo ranked 2nd in TL in ERA (2.06), WHIP (1.01) & BAA (.190). He was 5-1 w/ 1.51 ERA over last 7 starts at Dunedin, registering 34 strikeouts & 11 walks, winning Florida State League Pitcher of the Week honors May 21-29. Wojo became the highest draft pick at The Citadel, going 12-3 with a 3.58 ERA in 17 starts as a junior. He struck out 155 batters in 125.2 innings en route to being tabbed Southern Conference Pitcher of the Year. STRONG ARMS: Corpus Christi hurlers continue to impress. Their 1.83 ERA ranks third in the Texas League, behind 4-2 San Antonio (1.40) and 5-1 Midland (1.19). The Hooks staff has held the opposition to a.211 batting average, striking out 47 against seven walks in 54.0 innings. Corpus Christi has issued the fewest walks in the circuit. The bullpen stands 2-0 & 4-for- 4 in save chances with a 1.42 ERA, walking 3 while fanning 22 in 25.1 innings. Meanwhile, Hooks starters feature a.170 BAA. OUT OF THE GATE: The Hooks are off to their best start since 2008 when Corpus Christi swept Tulsa and took two of three from Northwest Arkansas at Whataburger Field to begin the season. Despite their 5-1 start, the Hooks can only share the top spot in the Texas League as Midland lost its first game Tuesday night, a 3-0 decision at Arkansas. AWAY TO THE OZARKS: Corpus Christi leaves the friendly confines of Whataburger Field for its first road series of the season, a three-game set at Springfield. Last year, the Hooks were 46-24 at home and featured a club-best 35-35 record on the road. The Cards went 77-61 overall in 2012 and 44-25 at Hammons Field. The Redbirds had trouble with the Hooks toward the end of the year, getting swept here at Hammons Field in mid-august. In fact, Corpus Christi won five of its last six contests opposite Springfield, outscoring the Cardinals 52-23. The defending champs did win the season series 7-5. DOUBLE YOUR PLEASURE: OF Domingo Santana s career-best three doubles Tuesday night tied the club record for twobaggers in one game by a single player. Koby Clemens was the last to accomplish the feat on May 10, 2010 at San Antonio. Corpus Christi s six doubles on Tuesday falls two shy of the franchise standard achieved on June 3, 2007, when the team totaled eight in Game 1 of a twin bill here at Hammons Field.
