Corpus Christi Hooks (11-9) at Frisco RoughRiders (11-9) Friday, April 26, 2013 Dr Pepper Ballpark Frisco, TX 7:00 pm ON THE RECORD: 7-3 Home 4-6 Road 3-1-2 Series 1-1 Sweeps L 1 Streak 2-3 Last 5 4-6 Last 10 BIG INNING REDUX: One night after the Hooks scored four times in one frame, Midland returned the favor. The RockHounds sent 10 men to the plate in a four-run eighth Thursday night, rolling to a 6-0 victory over the Hooks at Citibank Ballpark. Corpus Christi was forced to settle for the series spilt after enduring its second shutout of the season. The Hooks had plenty of chances offensively, creating traffic in all but one inning. The club hit into three double plays, stranded nine on bases and went 0-for- 7 with runners in scoring position. CC committed three errors which led to three unearned runs. The first was on a brilliant diving stop at third by Jonathan Meyer, who sailed the throw to first into the seats, allowing a run to score from second. Meyer later threw wildly to home plate in the eighth on a would-be force play. Starter Ruben Alaniz scattered three hits and three walks over 3.2 innings. He was charged with an unearned run and struck out two. Jorge De Leon was the bright spot out of the pen, tossing 1.1 scoreless innings. PAGE 2 HOOKS MEDIA INFORMATION FRIDAY, APRIL 26, 2013 FRISCO BUCHANAN ON DECK: RHP Jake Buchanan readies for his first relief appearance single following Ross Seaton as the second starter on Opening Night against Springfield. Buchanan left with a 1-0 lead Monday in Midland after hurling 5 innings of 2- hit shutout ball. He walked 1 & struck out 4, throwing 46 of 69 pitches for strikes. It marked his second consecutive 5.0 IP, 2- hit shutout performance. Buchanan retired the first 9 batters and induced 8 ground ball outs, which actually lowered his GO/AO ratio to 2.00. The NC State product has now pitched five innings and allowed two runs or fewer in all four of his starts this season, a feat he accomplished just five times in 19 starts for the Hooks in 2012. Buchanan ranks 5th in the Texas League in ERA (1.57), stands 2nd in WHIP (0.70) and, among circuit starters, slots 1st in runners per 9 IP (6.30), 3rd in batting average against (.157) and 4th in lowest walks per 9 IP (0.90). He has thrown 67 percent of his pitches for strikes. The Astros 2011 Minor League Pitcher of the Year went 5-9 with a 4.96 ERA in 27 appearances for Corpus Christi last season. He also pitched in three games at Oklahoma City (1 GS), yielding 9 earned runs over 8 innings. An 8th-round selection in the 2010 draft out of North Carolina State, Buchan began last year in the Hooks rotation, making 19 starts before moving to the bullpen. As a starter, went 5-6 with a 5.00 ERA, walking 26 and striking out 74 in 111.2 innings. Buchanan finished 2011 5-10 with a 3.80 ERA over 26 starts between Lancaster & Corpus Christi. Notched 104 strikeouts and 36 walks in 165.2 innings. His combined ERA ranked 2nd among full-season Astros farmhands. Making all but 1 start for Lancaster, he led California League starters in walks per 9 IP (1.82) and placed 3rd in runners per 9 IP (11.23). Also ranked within the circuit s top 10 in WHIP (1.21, 2nd), opponents avg. (.256, 4th), innings (158.2, 5th) and ERA (3.91, 8th). Buchanan was one of only three players in the loop to toss a complete-game shutout. He became the first Lancaster hurler to start a minimum of 20 games and finish the season with an ERA below 4.00 since Brandon Webb achieved the feat in 2001 (3.99 ERA, 28 GS). SANTANA ACTIVATED: OF Domingo Santana, who has been on the DL since April 17 with a hamstring injury, has been activated today, restoring Corpus Christi s roster to 25 functional players. Santana his hitting.231 with 4 doubles, 2 home runs and 5 RBIs in 11 games. He has three steals without being caught. Three of Santana s 11 hits were recorded April 9 against Tulsa at Whataburger Field when he went 3-for-4 with a run, 2 RBIs and a club-record 3 doubles. OF Austin Wates (hamstring), who has been out of the lineup for the past four games, is now the lone Hook on the disabled list. Wates is currently batting.317 with 2 doubles, 2 triples, 1 home run and 4 RBIs in 16 games. The former Texas League All- Star has walked 11 times against 11 strikeouts, fashioning an OBP of.438, which ranks 2nd in the league. Wates is also tied for 2nd in steals (9) and slots 10th in batting average. His is eligible to come off the DL as early as Monday. MR. CONSISTENT: INF Ben Orloff went 0-for-3 with a walk last night, ending his hit streak at 11 games. Orloff, who has reached base safely in all 14 games in which he s had a plate appearance, hit.324 during the 11-game stretch with 3 runs, 1 double, 2 RBIs, 3 walks & 1 strikeout to go along with a.372 on-base percentage. His hit streak is tied with Jake Goebbert for the longest in the Texas League this season. Orloff has played at each position on the diamond in 2013, including his first 5 career appearances at first base. LET S GET SOME RUNS!: The Hooks, who endured their 2nd shutout of the season last night, are hoping their offensive output of 13 combined runs Tuesday and Wednesday isn't a mirage. The club hit.203 (70-for-344) with 22 runs, 33 walks and 88 strikeouts in 10 games leading up to Tuesday, managing four home runs while stranding 72 on base. Corpus Christi owns just 6 extra-base hits over the last 6 games - and 4 were hit by George Springer (2B, 3 HR). The Hooks are last in the league in runs (61), batting average with runners in scoring position (.188) and RISP w/ 2 outs (.119).
