PAGE 2 DORAN TO FOLLOW: P Bobby Doran is schedule to follow Tropeano onto the mound tonight as part of Houston s tandemstarter rotation. Doran, selected by the Astros in the fourth round of the 2010 draft out of Texas Tech, makes his first appearance of the season with the Hooks after he made 10 starts for the team in 2012. He finished last season with a stretch of four starts in which he went 2-0 while allowing just two earned runs over 22.1 innings pitched. In one of those starts, August 21 at Midland, Doran struck out a career-high 10 batters. Doran split his 12 season between Advanced-A Lancaster and Corpus Christi, combining to 14-6 with a 4.00 ERA in 27 starts. In 157.1 innings, he walked 46 and struck out 115. Doran had a four-start stint with the Hooks from June 22-July 10, in which he went 3-1 with a 5.57 ERA. Doran was recalled from Lancaster on August 3 where he stood 8-4 with a 3.57 ERA in 17 starts. He struck out 72 and walked 30, holding the league to a.244 batting average while featuring a GO/AO ratio of 1.22. Doran ranked sixth in the California League in ERA and placed second among league starters in opponents batting average. Named to the CL All-Star Team, he posted a quality start in his last five outings and in 12 of his 17 overall with the JetHawks. His Double-A debut came June 22 at Frisco. Houston drafted Doran out of Texas Tech in the fourth round of the 2010 draft. He was the ace of the Red Raider staff in 2010, going 5-4 with a 4.35 ERA as a junior. Doran was originally selected by Pittsburgh in the 36th round of the 2009 draft out of Seward County CC in Liberal, Kansas HAPPY NEW YEAR!: Corpus Christi opened the season at home for a second consecutive season and has now won six of its last seven season-opening contests, standing 6-3 on Opening Day. Last year, Corpus Christi throttled Northwest Arkansas 9-0. Austin Wates, the only holdover from the 2012 Opening Day starting lineup, went 3-for-5 with a triple and 3 RBIs. Jarred Cosart (4.1), Erick Abreu (2.2) and Chris Hicks (2.0) toiled on the mound for the Hooks, combining for 11 strikeouts against 4 walks. With Wates returning in left field, the Hooks have had a player repeat as a starter in the Opening Day lineup at every position except first base. GOEBBERT A HOUND: The Astros traded Corpus Christi alum Jacob Goebbert to Oakland yesterday in exchange for lefty reliever Travis Blackley. Goebbert hit.304 with 9 home runs and 53 RBIs in 114 games for the Hooks last season. The 26- year-old outfielder ranked fourth in the Texas League in batting average and on-base percentage. A 13th-round pick in 2009 out of Northwestern, Goebbert batted.304 with 14 home runs, 87 RBIs and a.386 OBP over two seasons as a Hook. He has been assigned to Midland and is slated to join the RockHounds tonight at Northwest Arkansas. PROSPECTING: Corpus Christi boasts a bevy of prospects on its Opening Day roster. Outfielders George Springer (#3) and Domingo Santana (#13), starting pitchers Tropeano (#9) and Wojciechowski (#15), and catcher Carlos Perez (#20) all rank within Houston's top 20 prospect list, according to MLB.com. ESPN.com recently ranked the Astros system as the fourth best in baseball after ranking the club 27th in 2012. Baseball America slotted Houston at No. 9 among the 30 clubs in their 2013 Prospect Handbook. Eleven of the Astros top 20 prospects, according to MLB.com, were acquired by GM Jeff Luhnow over the last eight months. Baseball Prospectus also listed Houston at No. 9 in its farm system rankings released last week (the Astros were listed at No. 26 last year). Shortstop Jiovanni Mier (21st overall) was a first-round pick in 2009 and outfielder Michael Burgess, acquired by the Astros in the 2013 Rule 5 Draft, was originally a supplemental-round (49th overall) selection of the Washington Nationals in 2007. ALL-STARS RETURN: Seaton, P Jason Stoffel and Wates are back in Corpus Christi. Stoffel was named the Hooks' Pitcher of the Year after leading Double-A with 27 saves. He established the club's single-season record and currently stands as Corpus Christi's career leader. Stoffel is also tied for first on the club s single-season list with 56 appearances last year. A member of Houston's 40-man roster, Seaton paced the Hooks in starts (25) and innings pitched (146.0) for a second consecutive season. The Houston native ranks among the team's career front-runners in starts (53, 2nd), innings (301.0, 3rd) and strikeouts (203, 3rd). Wates composite batting average of.310 tied for seventh among Houston farmhands. FIELD CHIEF: Keith Bodie, reigning Texas League Manager of the Year, returns for his second season as manager. Bodie embarks upon his sixth consecutive year in the Astros system and his 38th professional season. He served as Hooks hitting coach in 2009. Last season, his charges led the league in runs (736), RBIs (665), slugging percentage (.410), on-base percentage (.342) and tied for first in batting average (.268). The campaign marked Bodie s return to the managerial ranks for the first time since 2005, when he directed the Harrisburg Senators of the Eastern League. In 16 seasons as a manager from the short-season Class A level through Triple-A, Bodie s teams have compiled a regularseason record of 1,067-984 for an overall winning percentage of.520. Nine of his clubs qualified for post-season play, including last year s Hooks and the Texas League s Wichita Wranglers from 2000 through 2003. In five campaigns as a Texas League manager, Bodie s clubs have won five second-half championships.
