1 Issue 11 December 11, 2017 THE WEEKLY REPORT Sevenoaks Town take another step towards title By Steve Rowley After a couple of weeks playing in some disappointing cup matches, Sevenoaks Town FC got back to some league action and their winning ways against bottom of the table Hollands & Blair. Sevenoaks travelled to the Star Meadow ground in Gillingham on Saturday off the back of two cup losses versus Tunbridge Wells and Thatcham Town respectively, and the SCEFL league leaders had to show some character to beat a battling Hollands & Blair outfit 3-1. Despite their lowly position, Hollands & Blair started the brighter of the two sides and only a tip over by Town s keeper Ben Bridle-Card denied them a shock lead. Sevenoaks however showed their class and in the 28th minute they broke the deadlock when Jason Thompson's freekick was nodded home by Jack Miles. Sevenoaks doubled their lead just moments before the break when a long-range Billy Bennett free-kick squeezed inside the home side's left-hand post. Town started the second-half the brighter side and twice went close before former Hythe Town striker, Frankie Sawyer, fired past their goalkeeper to make it 3-0 after 52 minutes. Holland & Blair continued to battle and were rewarded in the 63rd minute when James McDonald slid in and found the roof of the net after substitute Leyton O'Connor squared the perfect ball. So, Sevenoaks won in the league again yes, but some grey moments nearly let in a battling Hollands & Blair side and despite going 3-0 down they didn't give in, and ultimately actually drew the second half with the league leaders. 2 TOP STORIES The Mighty Oaks experience a blue Christmas By Steve Rowley After their impressive performance away against London Cornish last week, Sevenoaks Rugby Club 1st XV hosted Brighton Blues at the Paddock on Saturday. Head Coach Adam Bowman was pleased with the performance away from home and his focus immediately switched to the home fixture, however with the Oaks failing to string a run of consistent results together, posting a strong result one week and then losing or drawing the next, he knew there was a lot of work to be done. Bowman said after the London Cornish game: We ve had a bit of a stopstart season so far. We now have two games left before Christmas and so will be doing everything in our power to make sure we go in with two wins under our belt. A large crowd was present to cheer on the 1st XV after the Vice President s prematch lunch, and it was a chance to show how they are developing as a side. However the Brighton Blues came with different ideas and ultimately played their own style of rugby to beat Sevenoaks Brighton started the brighter of the two sides and went 7-0 up, but not long after the Oaks responded with a try from Gumbleton and Fothers converted to tie the match at 7-7. Sevenoaks then took the match to Brighton scoring a second through Nicholls, which was then converted excellently by Fothers to make it 14-7 to Oaks. That was to be the last points from the home side though as the Blues proceeded to overcome Sevenoaks with two penalties either side of the break before finishing off with another try. This was the last match of the year at home for the 1st XV, as they go on the road this Saturday to Maidstone, who currently occupy the bottom of the table. Goals from Andy Knight, Thomas Cobb and Luke Blackaby (2) secured all three points to lift them up to 9th in the league. They now have an extended winter break until January 6th when they host Bexley in the league. Halstead United FC also continued their rich form with a 4-2 win over Guru Nanak in the Bill Manklow Inter- Regional Challenge Cup in at the sides Gillingham ground. They will now face either Borden Village or Premier League outfit Peckham Town in the Quarter Finals next year. Chipstead FC switched to the Sevenoaks Charity Senior Cup at the weekend, although this didn t change the now familiar outcome, as they beat Woodlands FC 3-2 away. Chipstead will now play Ightham FC in the Quarter Finals. Ightham successfully saw off a challenge from Westerham FC in late November, winning the tie 8-1. Nomads FC and Ide HIll FC saw their cup tie called off for the second time just hours before kick-off, with no real explanation as to why. There is always speculation around these kind of moments, from waterlogged pitches to noshow of players, however a reason should always be provided. Without a match at the weekend, it means that Ide Hill have now only played three matches in the last six weeks. Although they play Welling Park in the league this weekend on the 3G pitch at Wrotham School, so that should go ahead. Hildenborough Athletic FC lost another match in the league, this time at home to K Sports Reserves. A goal from Liam Golden couldn t help the flailing side, finally going down 2-1. All teams will see a three week break after this weekend and some will be happier about this than others. With the results going their way recently, Otford, Chipstead and Halstead probably wish Christmas was a bit further away, and Ide HIll just want to get going again. Hildenbrough and Nomads on the other hand will be grateful for the break, giving them sometime to regroup and start again in the New Year.
