Exciting times, as today we welcome Thurrock RFC onto our noble grounds and I m sure that it will be a hard fought contest that we will all enjoy watching. But, that s not all that we have on today. Our extra 1sts are playing Beckenham and the mighty Crusaders are playing Ash, so there will be 3 massive home games for us all to support and enjoy. Meanwhile, our Development Squad will be playing away at Canterbury and we wish them the best of luck. On Sunday, the rugby just keeps on coming. With both our u15 and u18 girls playing in some massive cup games and our ladies team playing against Chesham with a 14:00 ko in a must win encounter, all at home. Lets hope that the ladies Head Coach Lee Fiddyment will finish the day with smile on his face, as these are some big games for all of the clubs involved. Also, I would like to congratulate the u13 girls who won their Kent 7 s competition in December, our girls section just keeps rolling on and on and are always looking for new players to join the ever growing section. And in the morning, we have the u17s playing against Aylesford and they would like as much support that we can muster to help carry them over the winning line, along with our massive mini s section playing away at Ashford. Max Easton hopes to return to training next week following a minor operation on his leg. James Dance hopes to be back training in the coming weeks following his hand operation. Billy Humphrey makes his return to the Extras following a period of unavailability. Zach Garratt, Max Bullock, Tom Miles and Matthew Beard have all been invited into the extended Kent under 20 Squad and will train at Charlton Park RFC on 20th January. On Friday 25th January a quiz night is being held in the clubhouse. It should be a good evening of general knowledge testing and fun. Teams of up to 8 are encouraged to enter. The recent Kent Messenger Awards evening saw Medway 1st XV secure the bronze prize in the Team of the Year category. Also securing a bronze prize was Gordon Stone in the unsung hero category. Dartfordians were promoted to this league at the end of last seasons as champions of London 2 South East and are going well having won 7 of their 13 league fixtures before today s game. Both teams came into this game on the back of good wins, for Medway against Camberley and for Dartfordians against Westcombe Park. The game kicked-off in front of a good sized, vocal crowd who were in good spirits having attended the Medway Christmas lunch. Dartfordians were awarded a scrum after 3 minutes which Medway took against the head, Dan Harvey released the backs with the ball being smartly passed to Alfie Orris to score a well taken try in the corner, the conversion was missed. 5 0 to Medway. The next 25 minutes was a closely contested affair with the majority of play between the 22 metre lines, with neither team being able to secure a real advantage. On 28 minutes after numerous phases of pick and go Dartfordians created a gap in the Medway defence for their impressive second row Kenny Lee to burst through and score under the posts, the conversion was successful. 5 7 to Dartfordians. On 38 minutes Medway won another scrum against the head, Dartfordians infringed and from the resulting penalty Dan Harvey slotted the conversion. 8 7 to Medway. Medway were awarded a penalty on 44 minutes following a breakdown offence and Harvey once again put the kick over to Medway. Shortly after the hard working Medway second row Amon Panikoula received a yellow card for a no arm tackle. When down to 14 men Medway arguably played their most fluent rugby of the game but the scoreboard went untroubled. Medway full back Ryan Redman had to leave the field after 58 minutes to change a contact lens and was replaced by the hard tackling Sam Sharpe. From a Medway lineout in the Dartfordians half Harvey fed the ball inside to Zac Garratt who showed good pace to score between the posts, Harvey converted to Medway. Medway then substituted the hard working Lewis Stimpson with Joe Fernyhough though shortly afterwards Stimpson returned when the Medway centre Peter Walsh had to leave the field with a leg injury. On 70 minutes with Dartfordians maintaining their pick and go approach and made good ground before their impressive second row Lee scored his second try under the posts, the kick was successful. Medway Dartfordians. The final 10 minutes were a tense affair with Medway defending resolutely to deny Dartfordians a further score. Charlie Wardzynski had to leave the field with a leg injury to be replaced by Redman. Bearing in mind the conditions both teams did their best to entertain and play fluent rugby but the error count was high for both. Lots of work for Medway to do on their lineout which struggled to click all game. Man of the match for Dartfordians was second row Kenny Lee who was excellent all afternoon and for Medway it was second row Max Easton. That s the last 1st team rugby until the 5th of January when we travel to Chichester. A very happy, peaceful and healthy Christmas and New Year to all readers.

12 MEDWAY RUGBY CLUB COMMUNITY SCHOOLS PROGRAM SEEKS COACHES FOR RUGBY & TOUCH RUGBY COACHING SESSIONS Medway Rugby Football Club is strengthening its rugby coaching staff. With a growing portfolio of school satellite clubs, match days, events and rugby development camps, the next few seasons offer unprecedented opportunity for the community group within our club. As a result, Medway RFC Community Schools Program is looking to recruit a number of part time community coaches to play a vital role in the growth and development of existing programmes. Ideal candidates will have worked or desire to work in a professional sports environment, have first class communication skills and a passion for rugby. RFU Level 1 & Level 2 hourly rate Improvers (rugby ready or scrum factory) with DBS check per hour who will will work initially alongside the qualified coaches. Dan is a 24 year old Business Analyst by profession and is a product of the Fulston Manor School, Sittingbourne. A back row player who can play on either side of the scrum Dan joined Medway from Sittingbourne as an 18 year old. He gained representative honours with Kent under 20s when they reached the National Semi-Final. Before going travelling Dan was a regular 1st XV performer and the club are delighted to see him return. Whist down under he also played for Melbourne RFC in their two senior sides. Dan recently got engaged to long term girlfriend Demi and states his favourite food is anything she cooks as she is an awesome cook! He his currently renovating the house they have bought together in Sittingbourne. Dan states his favourite film is the tear jerker The Greatest Showman. Dan s life ambition is to live, laugh and love and also not spend any money! 15 OUR HISTORY Brian Wolfe OUR HISTORY Brian Wolfe THE STORY OF OUR CLUB THROUGH THE DECADES January 1939 A big crowd was hoped for at Priestfields for the Boxing day charity match. Rochester had won the two previous encounters but had a tremendous task in hand as the Combined Clubs XV was exceptionally strong. Rochester 1st XV J Fernley, R Buxton, K Cheshire, K Bliss, H Langford, R Howell, P Wheeler, R Cloke, H Graham, D Hitchcock, G Clay, S Leech, C Ballard, P Davis, K Elvy. Combined Clubs XV: H Churchill (Tun Wells), F Slater (Old Maidstonians), W Stephens (Old Darts), S McCall (HMS Revolution), J Browning (Old Willies), C Cross (Old Maidstonians), B Pritchard (Snowdon Colliery), R James), Nore Command), J Berry (Tun Wells), B Baxter (Maths School), G Pierson (Cranbrook), S Vilder (APCM), B Overton (Imperial Services College), C Morling (Old Willies), S Fry (Vickers). It was hoped that the previous year s attendance of 700 could be doubled but it was all in vein as the match had to be cancelled due to the wintry conditions, and opposition s difficulty in travelling from many parts of Kent. However, the Club s Christmas Ball had a better fate and 170 dancers braved the weather to attend at the Central Hotel at Gillingham. (Above) The Central Hotel was a popular venue on the A2 as can be seen from the parked coaches. January 1949 The local derby match against the Old Anchorians ended in an 8-0 win for Rochester. Jack Turner scored the Rochester try with Joe Hilderbrands adding a penalty and a conversion. Dave Gautrey was outstanding in the forwards as the visitors brought their tally of victories to four with three drawn and five lost. Considering that all matches have been played away or with home games being played on borrowed grounds, praise is due to all members for the keen spirit shown. January 1959 A 3-0 win over Old Juddians saw Rochester gain revenge for the earlier narrow defeat. Although a close result, the Rochester pack kept well on top of the opposition and their try-live was never threatened. The only score came from scrum-half Wally Elvy, who breaking from a scrum, linked up with the back-line and the ball ended up in the safe hands of a thundering Mick Kenny who, on gathering, dived over for the deciding try. January 1969 In the opening match of the New Year away to local rivals Gravesend, Rochester lost their way on the pitch, conceded two tries and ended up losing by 6 points to nil, a game that they should have won. On the same afternoon, the derby match between Old Anchorians and Old Williamsonians was played on a pitch at Snodhurst Bottom, the only reference found to rugby being played there. Any further information is welcome. (Above) A fine set of gentlemen at Rochester s pre-season trial. January Medway took on local rivals Gravesend down on the Borstal pitch which had a good grass covering and without any icy patches. Winger Dennis Kitchener went over for an early try. John Rogers, supporting well, scored after good work by Taff Gwilliam and Tony Armstrong. With ten minutes to go, scrum-half Trevor French made a break before feeding Gwilliam who then went through several despairing tackles before touching down for a super 12 points to 10-victory. (Right) Ron Goodwin, Dave Hothy, Paul Essenhigh and Paul (where is he?) Gailor. January 1989 Medway enjoyed the start of January with a very convincing away win over Old Shootershillians with Dancing Dave Davies helping himself to six tries, a 1st XV record. Darren Pagden was the only other to score a try that afternoon. Bob Burggy managed four conversions and a penalty as they won January 1999 Another disappointing visit to Cranbrook as Medway again lost out by a very close margin, on this occasion, by a try to nil. In a match dominated by the forwards they were unable to break down a determined defence. At the end of the previous season, Medway had lost the Kent Division 1 decider by a 9-6 score-line against the same opposition. January 2009 Following wins over Erith, Bec Old Boys, Streatham Croydon, Medway s long run in the EDF Cup ended in the sixth round when they lost 13-3 at home to the eventual winners Brighton.
