1 Weekly News & Match Bulletin Season 2012/13 No.34 25th March 2013 Some pitches were waterlogged, others were snowbound. This was Witham Town on Saturday, when only nine of the 33 scheduled Ryman League fixtures were able to be played. In this issue All the action from the weekend programme Tables, fixtures and statistics Respect update and Youth League latest Picture by Mark Nicholls

2 All the Weekend Action By Peter Butcher Ryman League Communications Administrator ONLY four games survived on Saturday but there was no shortage of excitement and significance in the ones that took place. There was drama at the start and finish of Canvey s visit to Margate, who started the day in sixth place, a point behind the Essex club with a game in hand. That remains the situation after a 2-2 draw, but plenty happened along the way. Rob King s volley gave the islanders the lead after just 40 seconds and they doubled it in the seventh minute when Bradley Woods-Garness notched his 20 th league goal of the season. Tommy Kavanagh almost made it three with a free-kick that hit the bar before Matt Bodkin reduced the arrears from close range midway through the half. It looked as if that would be that until the second minute of added time, when Margate were awarded a penalty and Jamie Hand levelled the scores. Then, in the seventh added minute, a foul on Dean Mason presented Canvey with a penalty of their own. Up stepped King, probably the league s most reliable spot-kick ace, and Margate s goalkeeping player-manager Craig Holloway rose to the occasion by tipping the ball round his left-hand post. Top met bottom at Whitehawk, and Carshalton held out for 68 minutes before James Fraser gave Hawks the lead. Charlie Henry made it 2-0 in stoppage time and Hawks retained their nine-point lead. Carshalton, seven points adrift of safety and with only eight games left, have a doomed look about them. Second-placed Concord have three games in hand on Whitehawk and maintained their title bid with a 3-0 home win over Enfield Town. Steve King headed home a cross from debutant Ben Greenhalgh eight minutes before half-time and the same pair combined for centre-back King to net his second in the 80 th minute. Jason Hallett added a third in the 90 th minute. Enfield were without veteran goalscorer Scott McGleish, whose prolific form had lifted them out of relegation trouble. He joined Wealdstone during the week. The fourth game, like the other three, produced a very late goal - and it was the decider. Paul Vines struck in the first minute of added time to give Kingstonian a 2-1 victory at Lewes and arrest their recent slide, though possibly too late to revive their play-off hopes. Lewes, not out of the relegation woods by any means, fell behind to a Matt Pattison goal after 34 minutes. Nathan Crabb equalised on the hour and that almost earned the hosts a valuable point. Then, with home keeper Kieron Thorp grounded, a Pattison shot was cleared off the line by Chris Breach and Vines pounced to head into the empty net. IT S ten wins in a row now for Grays, who came from behind to chalk up a 2-1 victory at Soham on Saturday and draw level with Maldon at the top of the table. Soham really needed a win to keep their play-off challenge alive and their hopes were high when Neil Andrews fired them ahead from 20 yards after 18 minutes. Joe Sweeney replied with a header from Kenny Beaney s corner 11 minutes later and Jack West nabbed the winner when he finished off a loose ball soon after the break. Maldon knocked Grays off the top on October 27 and were 15 points clear of the field before Christmas. But their advantage is now down to three goals, and Grays still have two games in hand. All the other matches in the division fell victim to waterlogged or snowbound pitches.

3 THE fight for the title continued on Saturday when the top two both won, setting the stage perfectly for their forthcoming showdown. Maidstone fielded debutant Jon Harley, a member of Chelsea s squad for the 2000 FA Cup final, but struggled to beat mid-table Eastbourne 2-0 in front of 1,657 at the Gallagher Stadium. They took the lead with a 42 nd -minute penalty from Shaun Welford but failed to add to it until the fifth minute of added time, when Ade Olurunda hit the clincher. Stones remain three points clear of Dulwich, whom they visit on Tuesday in a potential title decider. Dulwich, who have a game in hand, maintained their challenge by beating visitors Whitstable 3-0. The first half, played in a blizzard, was goalless and the hard-working Oystermen had slightly the better of things, though it was Dulwich who looked more likely to score. They broke the deadlock in spectacular fashion ten minutes after the break, when Nyren Clunis crashed home an unstoppable drive from 25 yards. Liverpool trialist Danny Carr nodded a second from close range three minutes later and Xavier Vidal added a tap-in after 79 minutes. Although they have that game in hand, Dulwich are ten behind Stones on goal difference, a margin exactly accounted for by their 5-0 defeat at Maidstone, a result they will hope to avenge this week. Third-placed Faversham suffered a setback when they lost 2-1 at home to Worthing after playing for most of the game with ten men. Worthing had the chance to take a 12th-minute lead when Jamie Brotherton was fouled but Simon Overland saved Billy Medlock s kick. Dave Botterill put Faversham ahead ten minutes later, only for them to lose Wayne Wilson for a reckless tackle almost as soon as the game restarted. Worthing made their extra man count after the break. Brotherton had a goal disallowed in the first minute of the half but he had better luck in the 50 th minute and netted his second 14 minutes later. The Rebels are within four points of the play-off places but have only six games to play, fewer than any other club in the league. In the only other match that took place, Folkestone stormed back into the top five by thrashing visitors Walton & Hersham 5-0. They went ahead with a Darren Smith penalty after only three minutes, Richard Atkins made it 2-0 in the 16 th minute from Smith s pass and Josh Burchell, who had been fouled for the penalty, added the third before the interval. Any prospect of a comeback vanished in the 57 th minute when Swans keeper Audie Matheson-Light was ordered off for bringing down Burchell and Smith scored from the resulting free-kick. Frankie Chappell wrapped it up with a last-minute header. 13 Level Playing Field Weeks of Action 2013 Level Playing Field (LPF) are delighted to announce that their Weeks of Action campaign will take place from the 6 th to the 21 st April The LPF Weeks of Action represent a real opportunity for clubs to show what they have achieved for their disabled supporters, and the wider local disabled community. There is a lot of positive work going on around the sports world and LPF feel that clubs should use the Weeks of Action to demonstrate what they have been doing for their disabled supporters. It is also an opportunity for clubs to remind their supporters that they will not tolerate disability abuse on the terraces and to highlight disability awareness to all fans. In some cases that two week period may not be convenient, but do not let that put you off. LPF would still be delighted to hear of and promote events being planned outside of the two week window if that allows for clubs to get involved in the campaign. To view a list of suggested activities or to download a programme template please visit the LPF website at Of course, any activities planned to mark the LPF Weeks of Action do not have to be limited to what is contained in this list, and they would be delighted to hear of any other original ideas that you may have. LPF would also like to know what is happening beforehand so that they can help to publicise events via their e- newsletter and website. Please do contact them if you are planning any events, would like them to send across the LPF logo or have any other questions about disability or around the Weeks of Action, via at info@levelplayingfield.org.uk or phone on
