1 Weekly News & Match Bulletin Season 2012/13 No.23 7th January 2013 HASTINGS UNITED supporters enjoying their day out at Middlesbrough on Saturday. The side s FA Cup adventure ended with a 4-1 defeat but they were certainly not disgraced against a team lying fourth in the Championship. Picture: Steve White/TGS Photo. 2 All the Weekend Action By Peter Butcher Ryman League Communications Administrator WHEN leaders Whitehawk were 4-1 down at home to Canvey with 15 minutes left on Saturday, their fans cheered themselves up in the usual fashion, singing We re gonna win 5-4. And they were right! The amazing comeback opened up a seven-point gap at the top and, for the first time, no-one can catch Hawks by winning their games in hand. Hawks looked set for a routine victory when Charlie Walker put them ahead after 14 minutes and they were in command until James Hawes hit a surprise equaliser on the half-hour. Jay Curran then gave the islanders a halftime lead which was extended by Louis Dennis and Harrison Chatting in the game s third quarter. Danny Mills pulled one back on 75 minutes and a free-kick from Josh Jones three minutes later gave Hawks real hope. It took them only four more minutes to equalise though debutant Michael Malcolm and Mills put the icing on the comeback cake as the game went into added time. To make the day even better for the Brighton club, their two nearest rivals were beaten. Second-placed Margate went down 2-1 at Concord, who themselves climbed to third place, the highest position in their history. Nicky Cowley headed the Beachboys in front on 16 minutes but Margate, always dangerous, levelled on the stroke of half-time when Carl Rook pounced as the ball came back off the bar. It could have gone either way before Steve King headed home a Reece Harris corner with seven minutes left. Wealdstone, who started the day in third place, went down 2-0 at Kingstonian. Matt Pattison put K s ahead in the 65 th minute and, despite the dismissal of Adam Green shortly afterwards, they clinched the points with an overhead kick by Andre McCollin. K s moved up to fourth and Stones dropped to fifth. Bognor and Bury trail Wealdstone only on goal difference. The Sussex club advanced to sixth place with a 2-1 home win over bottom club Carshalton. Dan Beck s early goal for the hosts was answered by Nathaniel Pinney but a foul on Doug Tuck allowed Ashley Robinson to put Rocks ahead again with a 36 th -minute penalty. Pinney missed a great chance to square it in the second half. Bury forwards John Sands and Jordan Patrick both hit the woodwork in the first half of their game at Leiston. The hosts came more into it after the break but it finished goalless. Lowestoft are down to eighth, but with games in hand on all the sides above them, after their match at Thurrock was controversially postponed just before two o clock with both teams expecting to play. That ended Thurrock s hopes of escaping from the relegation zone. There were five teams they could have overtaken with a victory and, as it turned out, only one of them picked up any points on Saturday though two Hendon, whose game at Cray was on Sunday, and Hastings, who had business elsewhere - were not in league action. Two of the others clashed and it proved to be a good day for Wingate, whose 2-1 win at Harrow lifted them from 20 th to 16 th. The man in the spotlight here was Harrow keeper Elvijs Putnins. A week earlier he scored with a kick from his own penalty area: this week he came out of his area, handled the ball and was sent off. That was after 57 minutes and Wayne O Sullivan knocked the winner past outfield player Danny Leech, who had taken over between the posts, seven minutes later. Anthony Thomas had given Wingate an early lead, his first goal since his move from Lewes a month ago, and Saheed Sankoh replied in the 24 th minute. Enfield Town were the other strugglers in action and they dropped to 20 th after a 2-0 defeat at East Thurrock. Scott McGleish hit the woodwork early in each half for the visitors but goals by Sam Collins in the 17 th minute and new signing Dave Bryant, from Sudbury, in the 41st earned Rocks their second home win of the campaign. It was all square at Lewes, where Hampton s James Simmons hit the bar before Steve Brinkhurst gave the Sussex club a 19 th -minute lead. Charlie Moone equalised with a penalty on the half-hour, after player-manager Simon Wormull had brought down Malvin Kamara, and Simmons hit the bar again before Joe Turner s header gave Hampton a half-time lead. Leyton Schaaf made it 2-2 in the 62 nd minute. Hendon moved up three places on Sunday as they kept up their habit of scoring late winners on the road. Belal Aite-Ouakrim pounced for the only goal of the game at Cray in the 90 th minute when home keeper Andy Walker failed to hold a stinging low cross by Dean Cracknell.

3 It was the sixth successive away game in which Hendon had scored in the 89 th minute or later, and the third in a row where that late goal was a match-winner. They had failed to win any of their eight previous away matches. Ryman North BOTTOM hosted top on Saturday and it went according to the form book as Maldon won 3-0 at Ilford to move 13 points clear of the field again. Ilford, who had picked up their first point for ten games in midweek, held out until the 53 rd minute, when Dave Bryan s penalty broke the deadlock. Jamie Guy added his 17 th league goal and Dave Wareham wrapped it up. Free-scoring Heybridge reclaimed second place with a 4-0 home win over Waltham Forest, taking their leagueleading goal tally to 67. Michael Cheek put them ahead with his 18 th league goal, Solomon Ofori added another and, on the stroke of half-time, Luke Callander became the first player to notch 20 Ryman League goals this season. He added his 21 st with 14 minutes left. The shock of the day came at Rush Green, where Grays crashed to their first home defeat of the season as midtable Cheshunt romped to a 4-1 win. Courtney White scored after four minutes but the real damage was done in a three-minute spell soon after half-time, when Tony Burke converted a penalty and White made it 3-0. Cheshunt s Tommy Fletcher was sent off shortly afterwards and Joe Sweeney pulled one back with ten minutes left before Dave Greene had the last word. Aveley returned to the play-off spots after their 3-2 win at Sudbury halted the home side s recent surge up the table. Jordan Cox put the Millers in front in the 41 st minute only for James Baker to level matters before the interval, the usually-prolific striker s first goal of an injury-plagued season. Leon Antoine fired Sudbury ahead in the 56 th minute but Cox quickly replied with his second of the afternoon and Junior Dadson nabbed the winner in the 67 th minute. Aveley took over fourth place from Potters Bar, who went down 3-1 at Brentwood. Alex Read shone for Brentwood, setting up the 20 th -minute opener for Daryl Robson and scoring himself a minute later. Daniel Ailey missed a penalty for the Scholars before half-time and Read converted a spot-kick for Brentwood just after the hour, his 25 th goal in league and FA competitions. Ailey pulled one back three minutes later but that was all. The Scholars stay in the top five; Thamesmead, who could have overtaken them, had their game at Waltham Abbey postponed and dropped one place to seventh, behind Soham who maintained their steady progress up the table with a 2-1 home win over Harlow. Buster Harradine scored twice in two first-half minutes with a free-kick and a header. That was enough, although Joe O Donoghue put Harlow back in the game with a long-range strike moments before the interval. Tilbury stayed in the picture, coming from behind to win 3-1 at Redbridge. Jacob Cleaver put the Motormen ahead after 14 minutes but it did not take long for the Dockers to turn it round through Sam Cutler and Tom Wraight. A late penalty by Aaron Waters made sure. Redbridge remain just a point above Ilford, as do Ware after their 4-2 home defeat at the hands of Witham. It was 1-1 after eight minutes, with Tom Devaux putting the visitors ahead and Nathain Hilaire replying. Emeka Onwubiko restored Witham s lead before half-time and Sam Taylor made it 3-1 on 64 minutes. Ware were given new hope when Tony Martin s shot struck the bar and went in off keeper Danny Sambridge, but Rob Whitnell clinched the points with four minutes left. Chatham crushed visiting Romford with five unanswered goals, though it was close for most of the game. Lee Hales opened the scoring three minutes before half-time and it was the 73 rd minute before Harry Smith headed the second. Matt Solly converted an 81 st -minute penalty and a late flurry brought second goals for Hales and Smith in added time. It was an uneventful affair at Wroxham, where Needham Market drew 1-1. Danny Bloomfield gave the visitors the lead with a 26 th -minute penalty and Ross Durrant replied three minutes later. A HAT-TRICK by Jake Hobbs was in vain as Hythe went down 4-3 at home to Maidstone in a thrilling third-vsecond battle in front of 709 fans at Reachfields on Saturday. Shaun Welford achieved a rare feat by scoring for Stones in the first minute of each half, ironically against a side who were already trying to sign him. His opener was followed by a 17 th -minute goal from Warren Whitely as Stones appeared to take command, but Hobbs hit back in the 35 th minute and equalised moments before halftime.

4 Welford did it again at the start of the second half, scoring within 30 seconds, and Michael Phillips made it 4-2 before Hobbs fired his third from 25 yards with 14 minutes left. Stones held out to strengthen their grip on second place while Hythe slipped back to fifth. Dulwich maintained their two-point lead with a 3-0 home win over Corinthian-Casuals, though for a long time it seemed that Erhun Oztumer s 16 th -minute penalty miss would cost them dearly. It was the 73 rd minute before Nyren Clunis broke the deadlock and Oztumer made it 2-0 in the 87 th minute. Clunis struck again in the fifth minute of added time. Leatherhead moved up to third with perhaps the most predictable win over the day. Their 3-1 victory at Worthing was their ninth on their travels and Worthing s ninth home defeat. Tom Bradbrook gave Tanners a 16 th - minute lead and Tommy Hutchings doubled it with a penalty five minutes before half-time. Chris O Flaherty pulled one back before the break but Hutchings netted again in the 49 th minute to make it another unhappy day for the home fans at Woodside Road. Crawley Down are back in fourth place after their 4-0 home win over Walton & Hersham. It was perhaps not as convincing as it sounds. Jamie Cade s early strike was all the Anvils had to show for their efforts until the last eight minutes, when Gabriel Odunaike, Fraser Logan and Cade made it a convincing scoreline. Faversham slipped out of the top five after going down 1-0 at home to Folkestone. Darren Smith scored after 13 minutes and the hosts rarely looked likely to hit back. Burgess Hill could have moved back into the play-off spots but had to settle for a 1-1 draw at Merstham after taking a third-minute lead with Pat Harding s 16 th league goal. After an extended half-time because a family emergency forced the referee to depart, Merstham levelled matters through Lee Newman in the 62 nd minute. Newman missed a late chance to win it but a draw was fair. Sittingbourne stayed in the leading group with a 2-1 home victory over Horsham, who played with nine men for most of the second half. Tony Nwachukwu gave Hornets a second-minute lead but was sent off for a wild tackle nine minutes before half-time. Connor Coyne equalised for the Brickies in the 43 rd minute and Horsham suffered a further blow when Billy Medlock was given his marching orders eight minutes after the restart. Nick Davis soon scored the winner. Three Bridges picked up a valuable point in the fight to stay up, drawing 1-1 at Ramsgate. It was a game of two penalties, Warren Schulz in the first half for the hosts, Tim Rivers in the second for Bridges. Bridges moved a point clear of bottom club Walton Casuals, who have two games in hand. Still seeking their first home win of the season, they went down 1-0 to a 79 th -minute goal by Bamoussa Cisse for Tooting, though the visitors were able to celebrate only after a long discussion between the referee and his assistant. Chipstead played some good football on a heavy pitch at Herne Bay and were rewarded with a 1-0 victory. Sam Robinson was on target just before the break. Floodlight problems have afflicted several Sussex clubs this season and Eastbourne had to wait for their 2-0 home win over Whitstable. The second half was delayed for 25 minutes and it was the hosts who prospered when the problem was solved. Dan Smith, recently signed from County League side Hassocks, marked his first start with the opening goal on 64 minutes and John Lansdale made sure with a long-range effort. FA Cup HASTINGS UNITED s glorious FA Cup run came to an end with a battling 4-1 defeat at the hands of Middlesbrough, fourth in the Championship. The club, the last club from that level of the pyramid left in the competition, had two particular moments to savour. The highlight was Bradley Goldberg s 20-yard drive, his seventh FA Cup goal of the season, which made it 3-1 midway through the second half. Not far behind it was the moment when, with the game still scoreless, newlysigned Liam O Brien saved a penalty from Ishmael Miller. O Brien was signed on loan from Barnet the previous day after keeper Matt Armstrong-Ford failed a fitness test. His courageous performance in the second-round victory over Harrogate, when he had been forced to play despite injury because there was no-one else, had been spotlighted on national TV but it was too much to ask him for a repeat. Another regular, striker Zac Attwood, also missed the big day through injury. Watched by over 1,000 travelling fans, Hastings held out thanks to O Brien s save after Miller had been brought down by Tom Vickers until the 22 nd minute, when Merouane Zemmama curled in a shot from outside the box. The dream was still alive at half-time, when the score remained 1-0, but Andy Halliday s goal within two minutes of the restart dealt Hastings a crushing blow.

5 A cruel deflection helped Zemmama to make it 3-0 in 68 minutes but Goldberg s golden moment followed immediately and was celebrated in suitable style by the Sussex supporters. Miller netted the final goal with six minutes left but Hastings received a rousing reception from the crowd of 12,579 at the end and their approach to the game was warmly praised by experienced Boro boss Tony Mowbray.
