2 1 PURPOSE 1.1 This is to specify the material specification of carrier tape, cover tape, and plastic reel for tape and reel packaging of surface mounted parts. 1.2 This document provides specifications on dimensions, dimensional tolerance, tape and parts orientation for taping and reeling of surface mounted parts. 2 DIMENSIONS AND TOLERANCES 2.1 The centerline of the component cavity on all tapes shall be located midway between and adjacent pair of sprocket holes. 2.2 Figures 2 and 3 and tables 2 and 3 give dimensions, dimensional tolerances for 8, 12, 16, 24, 32, 44 and 56 mm side tapes for embossed and punched carriers. 2.3 Metric dimensions and tolerances will govern all drawings in this document. 2.4 All component taping diagrams, dimensions, tolerances, and component positioning requirements are those which are specified per EIA standard EIA-481, current revision. 2.5 For the 8 LEAD SOIC EIAJ type II package and 16mm carrier tape width, the component taping diagrams, dimensions, and tolerances, and component positioning requirements are those which are specified per EIAJ standard RC-1009B, current revision. 3 CARRIER TAPE 3.1 Embossed carrier tape must have a hole in the cavity to facilitate part ejection, and to allow inspection for missing components. 3.2 Embossed carrier tape shall be conductive with a surface resistivity of less than Ohms per square inch. Note : All exceptions must be approved by QC. Material shall be Carbon filled/conductive Polystyrene or Styrene + Butadiene. 3.3 Carrier tape shall have a breaking strength greater than 460kg/cm 2 tests to be performed per ASTM D-638 or equivalent. 3.4 Carrier/cover tape leader shall have a minimum length of mm, and tape trailer shall have a minimum length of mm. For 180 mm (7 ) diameter reels only. 3.5 Carrier-cover tape leader shall have a minimum length of mm, and tape trailer shall have a minimum length of mm. For 330 mm (13 ) diameter reels only.

3 3.6 For EIAJ the minimum tape trailer shall be 400 mm (15.75 ) 3.7 Sprocket hole diameter shall be /-0 mm. 3.8 See appendix A: Tape and Reel configuration. And see appendix A-1 for cavity configuration. 3.9 See TABLE 1 for carrier tape dimensions and Cavity dimensions in millimeters per table Embossed carrier tape thickness shall be mm ( ). The preferred thickness for 28L PLCC and larger cavities shall be 0.35 mm The carrier tape shall be supplied on reels which shall be labeled with suppliers name, part number, length of tape in meters, and date of manufacture/lot number The carrier tape shall be supplied in 56 cm (22 ) reels, with inner core diameter of 75 mm (3 ) Tape splicing is not permitted No rough surface/ pimples/ pin holes allowed. 4 COVER TAPE 4.1 The cover tapes shall be clear to allow inspection for missing components. 4.2 Cover tapes shall not adhere to each other or to the components in the carrier pockets. 4.3 Tape materials (including the adhesive) and the process of taping components shall not adversely affect the mechanical or electrical characteristics (solder ability, markings, etc.) of taped components. Composition shall be transparent polyester film base and heat activated synthetic polymer. 4.4 The cover tapes shall not extend beyond the edges of the carrier tape nor shall they cover the sprocket holes. 4.5 The cover tape shall have a total peel strength of 0.1N to 1.0N (10 to 100 grams calibrated scale reading) for 8 mm wide carrier tape or 01.N to 1.3N (10 to 130 grams calibrated scale reading) for 12mm & 16mm & 24mm & 32mm & 44mm & 56mm wide carrier tape. The direction of pull shall be opposite the direction of carrier tape travel such that the cover tape makes an angle of between 165 degrees and 180 degrees with the top of the carrier tape. The carrier and /or cover tape shall be pulled with a velocity of 300+/-10 mm/minute during peeling. 4.6 Cover tape shall have a minimum breaking strength of 500 kg/cm 2 tests performed per JIS-K-6734 or equivalent.

4 4.7 Tape splicing is not permitted. 4.8 Cover tape thickness shall be mm. 4.9 Cover tape dimensions in millimeters per Table 2-Cover Tape dimensions Cover tape surface resistivity shall be less than Ohms per square inch (antistatic). 5 REEL 5.1 Reel to be constructed out of high impact polystyrene, solid fiberboard, or equivalent. Corrugated reels are unacceptable. 5.2 The wall thickness shall be 2.0 +/- 0.2 mm. 5.3 See figure 4 and tables 4 for the reel dimensions. 5.4 The minimum reel markings shall be : (see figure 6) Microchip technology inc Microchip catalog part number (MPC code) Date code of components Date sealed Quantity of components on reel Customer part number when specified on Microchip purchase order. 5.5 Reel markings should be placed on the side of the reel with sprocket holes or pin #1 side. (see figure 6) 6 COMPONENT ORIENTATION :(SEE APPENDIX :12) 6.1 Components with terminations only on the bottom, must be packaged with their terminations facing the bottom cover tape or the bottom of the embossed carrier tape. 6.2 No missing components allowed between the first and last part of any reel. 6.3 Components shall not rotate more than 20 degrees in any axis within the cavity of the carrier tape. 7 ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS 7.1 This specifications apply under the following environmental conditions : Storage / Shipping : -25 to 50 DEG C and 0 to 70% relative humidity Operating : 25 +/- 15 DEG C and 0 to 70% relative humidity

5 7.2 During storage or operation at the above noted environment: The cover tapes shall not move or become detached The carrier tape shall not lose strength and break to delaminate during unreeling by the assembly machine The tape materials shall not cause any chemical reaction that may cause any deterioration of the components properties After minimum 30 days of storage aging test under operating conditions. The cover/carrier tape must sustain a peel-off strength of grams. 7.3 Carrier tape/cover tape/reels shall be packaged to prevent dust and other contaminates during shipment and handling before use at Microchip 8 SUMMARY OF OTHER MATERIALS Refer to PI PACKAGING Only one package type is allowed per reel. All parts in any reel should be from a single assembly location. Full reels should leave 1 cm (typical) space from the outermost wound tape to the outer edge of the reel. This does not apply to partially filled reels. Refer to PI for output reel quantities. All finished reels shall be individually bagged with a desiccant in antistatic heat sealed poly bags (conductive or static shield bags optional). Manufacture information located on reel shall be visible through poly bag, or a similar label shall be applied outside the bag if the label is not visible through the bag. More than 1 reel can be placed inside each reel box : Refer PI-24069, Table B1. Enough fillers (antistatic bubble wrap) shall be placed in the reel box to prevent movement during shipping. Reel box label should contain the following information : P/N : Customer part number MPC : Microchip MPC code MFTR : Microchip Technology Date code : All date code of units in reel box QTY : Total quantity in reel box Shipping box label should contain the following information: Destination : As required
