Holden Club TORQUE July 2011 page 6 Committee TORQUE President s Report - Vlad Kowal Club Meetings Return to Monthly Format for the rest of 2011 After further discussion at the committee meeting this month, we have reconsidered the bi-monthly meeting proposal. The overall feeling was that it would not benefit the club or its members to have a bi-monthly meeting. If you, as one of our members agree, please come along next week and tell us at the July meeting next Monday, July 25 th. The August meeting and the rest of the meetings will proceed as originally on the calendar, on the fourth Monday of the month. The format of the meetings will be changed further. We won t be repeating what we have already said in our newsletter, but adding new material. We will also be asking one club member from the floor to volunteer to speak about something (the racecar, the engine that is being built, plans for their motorkhana beast etc). There may be a guest speaker coming to share his knowledge of racing suspension setups at our meeting (to be confirmed). August Meeting Can anyone tell me what will be special about the August club meeting? It is a significant day for the club. HSCCV on Facebook This is just a reminder that the Holden club is on Facebook. We are keen to get members talking to each other and sharing their stories and comments about the club and their motorsport activities. Make us one of your Facebook friends. Helpers for the rest of our events this year Unfortunately, we didn t get our usual number of helpers for our most recent Winton event. The committee has agreed that there is only one way to move ahead from here, and that is to make it compulsory for all members to provide helpers (flag marshals, time-keepers, starters, recovery vehicle) for the Sprints and Motorkhanas which are run by the club or jointly with Ford Four Car Club. Please contact me (Vlad) via mobile ( ) or (educon@bigpond.net.au) to let him know if you or a friend/member of your family can help with any of the forthcoming events. If you don t contact me within a week, then I will be contacting you. We have several members of our club who have done more than their fair share of helping, and they are not being asked to do more. We are very grateful to Peter Stewart, Kylie Kastelic, James Towers, Geoff Fitzpatrick, Ray Cardwell, Malcolm and Kerrie Cardwell, Bruce Lethborg who has directed many events which would not have run at all without his efforts, Ian Smith, webmaster Alex, Phil Slater, Steve Jones, Peter Scott, Greg Black, Wayne Paola, Martin Carabott, Frank Rogan, Tamara Dennett, Andrew Holc, Kris Lethborg, and myself (three events helping and directing two events). If you haven t helped yet, please volunteer for one or two of the following events: August 21 st Motorkhana at Avalon (Timekeepers, set up tests, event secretary, Food and Drink Sales) October 23 rd Hillclimb at Bryant Park Moe/Morwell (Start marshals, flag points) Nov 1 st Cup Day Sprint Sandown (Flag marshals, start marshals, recovery vehicle). cont d...

Holden Club TORQUE July 2011 page 7 Committee TORQUE President s Report - Vlad Kowal cont d. Club T-Shirts and Caps Martin still has plenty of club caps and T-shirts in stock. Bring your $20 or $40 to our next meeting to buy one or both, or pick up your free 2011 cap as a member. Sign Up A Member There are still club points on offer for any member who signs up new members. If you have signed any new members this year, make sure that you follow up with Bruce so that he awards the points to you. The coveted Club Champion trophy is at stake here! CAMS changes and roll cages It looks like all of us who have roll cages in our vehicles which are not log-booked will need to do so before the end of the year. CAMS regulations WILL be changed and this will affect many of our club vehicles. If any members know of the best way to go about this, your feedback will be appreciated and circulated to the rest of our members. Come along to the club meeting to find out more. CAMS Officials training If you re not helping as an official or competing in the Motorkhana, a CAMS Bronze Scrutiny training course will be held on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21 st August 2011 in Shepparton, Victoria. The course provides a fantastic opportunity for CAMS members to broaden their understanding on motor sport officiating and allows officials to get up close and personal with cars at future events! The course will be highly interactive with both theory and practical based learning, all organised and presented by the helpful and friendly members of the Victorian Scrutiny Panel. BRONZE SCRUTINY Scrutineers are vital for any event as they are responsible for checking the compliance of vehicles and the eligibility and safety requirements of CAMS National Competition Rules. The Competencies for this module are: 1. Perform the scrutineering functions expected of a motor sport Scrutineer 2. Identify risks and manage them accordingly 3. Manage difficult and critical situations through effective communication and interpersonal techniques. 4. Apply regulations and NCRs relevant to scrutineering at motor sport events. The course will begin at 9am Saturday 20th August and will run for approximately 8 hours. The course is continued on Sunday 21st August, however the length of the day will depend on how much content is covered on Saturday. Places for the module are strictly limited so get in fast if you wish to attend! For more information on the course, such as exact location and course requirements or if you would like to enrol please contact Lewis White lewis.white@cams.com.au or Ben Manning ben.manning@cams.com.au on cont d...

Holden Club TORQUE July 2011 page 8 Committee TORQUE President s Report - Vlad Kowal cont d. Club Registration and Permits We have all read a great deal about VicRoads changes to the club permit system. Some club members are concerned that some members of car clubs may be abusing the system in registering what looks like nearly pure competition, roll-caged vehicles for road use. We will monitor the situation as a committee and keep all informed. Greenhouse Games An interesting concept for car clubs who focus on motorsports has been promoted by the Victorian government. Their promotional material which came recently suggests: Turn your clubs into GreenHouse Heroes and compete in the GreenHouse Games! Sustainability Victoria have organized the GreenHouse Games which is an exciting online challenge that rewards sporting clubs for teamwork and leadership in sustainability. It s a fun and simple way for your clubs to raise up to $4000 and take action at home to make a difference to the environment. Every participant can also win daily prizes and save money on their household bills along the way. The GreenHouse Games Challenge website is now live and sporting club registrations are open. cheers Vlad

Holden Club TORQUE July 2011 page 9 Committee TORQUE Secretary s Report Phil Slater Hello all and welcome to the July mag. We have had a lot of events lately and there are a few more coming up so please consider volunteering to officiate. I really enjoyed our recent Winton event as it is a fun track that is challenging and exciting but boy was it cold. I could not get my rear tyres warm so my times weren t fantastic and there were a few spins but I still enjoyed myself. Many thanks to all the officials on the day who had a very cold time but would have enjoyed themselves with the great view that the officials get at Winton. I recently renewed my CAMS licence online and found it to be simple and efficient with it arriving within a couple of days. Well done CAMS, things are improving! Phil Slater

Holden Club TORQUE July 2011 page 12 Club TORQUE Motorkhana/Group5 Frank Rogan (Vice-President) Hi Folks, Well, I m thinking from the outset that I have very little to write about this month, and I also don t have any decent car photos. So this might be the shortest report I ve written yet June 26 th saw VMC4 get the chop the day before due to Avalon copping lots of rain on the Friday night. It may be rescheduled or cancelled, time will tell. But that date also saw an event go ahead, yes the Holden vs. Ford Series (Group 5 Series) at Sandown. One of our newest members, Michael Curson debuted his Black LJ Torana and apparently posted some great times. By mid-week when I called Michael, he was still very buzzed from the fun he had out there. Good on you Michael, you got there in the end! Geoff Fitzpatrick also bought one of his fleet out, a nice white EH Holden. Somewhere else in this fine publication will no doubt be a full write-up on the event and probably some photos too. July 3 was the PAC Group 5 motorkhana which was re-named as a HSCCV round and was literally thrown together in a very short timeframe. Bruce shared the event Director s role with Nicholas Charrett, swapping roles so the other could step into their respective vehicle and attempt to drive without getting bogged in the sloshy conditions. Fortunately the rain stayed away apart from a slight drizzle, though at one stage it looked like it was really going to hit us. We had some interesting scenarios where horsepower was substituted for people power as cars got pushed out of start garages, pushed to continue and pushed to complete tests. We had people sliding through garages like they didn t exist and cars towed out of bog holes between tests. Even so, with 33 entrants and tests that took a loooong time we got though 6 tests (although 3 cars and 4 competitors didn t complete the day). I d like to thank Bruce for sharing the Director role, and Tamara for all her pre & post event assistance. Thanks also to Nicholas (FFCC), David Bachelor (TCCA), Peter & Sue Morrison (PAC), John Rosengrave (HAC), Alan Bloomfield (PAC/CAMS), Nick Wright (who managed to win his class and still cook up a storm on the hotplate) and everyone else who pitched in along the way. As you can see, it takes a few people to run these events, just not quite this many usually! Track fiends were spoilt for choice of tracks on July 10, having either the 2 nd Super Sprint round held at Winton or the PIARC sprint at the Island (and a hillclimb or two.ed) to go and play. I ll let others comment on results, as it s much better coming from those who were there. Like Vlad, for example. As I m writing this, there will be some tyre screeching going on at the Huntly Sale yards just out of Bendigo. VMC Round 5 is happening there, hosted by FFCC and HAC. The first of only two bitumen motorkhanas in this State this year as part of the VMC series. I wasn t organized enough in many respects to get there and then be able to be involved in the Eco-Drive on Sunday as well. But I will be getting to the Eco-Drive and can fill you in at this month s General Meeting. In between the two Bendigo events there is another bitumen motorkhana, it s over in Mt Gambier on August 7. August 21 sees us back in the dirt for another of the Group 5 motorkhana series to be run by our club (help required please!) at Avalon, followed by a round on Father s Day which is September 4. Nicholas from Ford Four is apparently running this as a head-to-head motorkhana on this day. You are to be put against someone for the entire day who is of similar standard based on previous results. Then with them you run identical tests side-by-side, then swap over and do the other person s test to eliminate any differences in the tests. This is something a bit different, it might be a bit of a spectacle as well as a way of learning by watching different techniques on how you yourself can become quicker....cont d

Holden Club TORQUE July 2011 page 13 Club TORQUE Motorkhana/Group5 Frank Rogan...cont d As a prelude to the Eco-Drive, this week I attended Fiat Car Club s general meeting. It gave me some insight into another club with ideas on how to improve our own. Here s just a few impressions: Approximately 45 attendees, apparently the numbers were down because it was a cold wet night. They have a social event every single month without fail, and I went to a low-key dinner one Saturday night about a month ago to find about 16 people including partners had gathered. They explicitly promote their own, one had a ice-cream shop, and another was promoting a movie. Guest speakers are a regular occurrence but they also book/invite members to talk about their car restorations or preparations for a few minutes. One club member had taken an overseas trip and had visited heaps of car museums, he ran a slideshow whilst talking about it. Very cool. They had a pin board with social events and a place to write your name if you were interested to attend. Their plastic membership cards were very nice and they had a wide range of merchandise available as well. And multiple raffle prizes. They had a massive filing cabinet of workshop manuals that takes two people to move it a few metres from the storage room it normally sits in. Interestingly, even though I m not into Fiats there was a feeling I got that the members were entertained and that there was a strong sense of belonging and respect. This was despite the fact that they had some new faces on the committee. There were 3 or 4 guests in the crowd and as one of them I felt very welcome indeed. Seriously, if I didn t have to own a Fiat I d consider joining them. Here are some photos of the night:

Holden Club TORQUE July 2011 page 14 Motorkhana/Group5 Frank Rogan...cont d Club TORQUE So now that I ve said all that, what ideas does this spark that we can implement as a club to make it better for all of us? What are we doing well that we should do more of? What should we be doing that we re not? How do we make our meetings more appealing to our members and guests? What ideas do you have whereby we can expand our member base? I really think the committee works off it s members. It s a bit like a comedian s act; if the crowd digs the jokes, then it tends to encourage a better performance from the entertainer, and if not it tends to go the other way. Same too, if you like what we are doing (by attending the stuff we organize, providing feedback) we re likely to do more. Whether it s criticism or praise, your feedback is most important and certainly welcomed. As I say, see you sideways or at the meeting. Just don t ask me to juggle swords whilst riding my unicycle in a clown suit. (but can we watch?...ed) Frank.

Holden Club TORQUE July 2011 page 15 Club TORQUE Motorsport Peter Scott Hello to all, We ve had a couple of sprint meetings recently in cold but thankfully not wet conditions, leading to decent turnouts and fun had by almost all. Sandown was run on 26 th June on a partly cloudy day with freezing strong winds making flag marshalling uncomfortable in general. The track was dry though, leading to some good times being posted by a variety of cars. The fastest time for the day went to a 427 powered HSV GTO that posted a 1:18.82 and sounded just fantastic down the main straight. Very quick for a road registered car. We also saw the return of Pete Stewart s VL, back in the fray following a crash at Winton earlier in the year. The bad luck award for the day has to go to Greg Black who only got 2 laps in on his first stint before running wide into the dirt on turn 1 and managed to run over his own front spoiler, reducing it to its component atoms in spectacular fashion. Don t worry Greg, I ve almost got it back together Winton was on 10 th July and the sun rose on a cold but reasonable day. 56 entries turned up on the day with a mix of all types out having fun, Porsches, Lotus, Minis, Jaguars and a GT40 thrown in as well. There was a couple of hiccups early on with a mix up of Dorian timing transponders causing confusion at the beginning of the day, and time lost while a couple of cars were dragged in off the track. Wayne Paola s VK blew a head gasket and retired from proceedings, it is now in intensive care and will live to fight another day. The best performance on the day had to go to Vlad who completed 8 laps with a best time of 1:48.59 while home in bed with a sore back. Not quite sure how he managed this, but his results are posted! Mark Kakouri, Wayne Paola, Peter Stewart & Greg Black waiting their turn at Sandown.

Holden Club TORQUE July 2011 page 16 Club TORQUE Motorsport Peter Scott I have spent a fair bit of time recently researching the rule changes to roll cages and the impact (pun intended!) it will have on the type of events that we do. For the most part, it won t affect us at all. However, the rules are such that all cars fitted with a roll cage will be required to have a log book after Jan 1 st The actual structural changes are the inclusion of a windscreen pillar support brace, to reinforce heavily raked screens, changes to gussets in corners and a change to the padding spec to a new fire resistant standard. (aka SFI...Ed) That covers the changes to the rules. The major problem as far as we are concerned is that all cages now have to be inspected as complying with Schedule J of the CAMS manual. This means that someone has to sign off on the build of the cage, the specs and materials have to be on the paperwork, and the cage has to be properly welded ALL around every joint, including the top of tubes ( not just where you can see!), the mounting foot sizes must be correct, the bends must be within tolerance for deformation and ripples, the fit must be close to the body shell, cant rails at the top of the screen at the front and not able to be hit by the drivers head, harnesses mounted correctly, seats mounted correctly, etc. As you can see, there is more to doing this properly than just welding a few bars into the cabin. The advantage is that the car will be torsionally stiffer and handle better as well as the driver being able to walk away after a major incident should it occur. The only down side will be to those with sub standard cages who will have to upgrade them before logbooking. The list of CAMS approved scrutineers who can inspect vehicles and sign application forms can be found on the CAMS website Get your car inspected and the ball rolling fairly soon, as there will be a rush towards the end of the year and if anything needs attention then it should be scheduled before the mad panic sets in. Please take this seriously, motorsport is fun but can be dangerous if it goes pear shaped, a good cage is an investment in your own safety! Have fun and keep the shiny side up! Peter.

Holden Club TORQUE July 2011 page 17 Membership/Club Point Scores Hi Guys, Good news, we have the old members and point score program back, Phil found a copy of the program on the club computer. It needs updating but we will be able to start scoring the year (big job). I haven t yet copied it to my computer; the program is in DOS so let s hope it runs ok on windows 7. I have been getting quite a few enquires for membership and we have several new members and I m still receiving renewals. I will be able to update the member numbers when the program is up and running. We have run a couple of sprints at Sandown and Winton and a motorkhana at Pakenham, I would like to thank the members who helped out, however, it seems to be the same members each time. We have well over 100 members but we don t see them at club meetings or at our events. As membership secretary, I see all these names on membership renewals and new member forms but I don t know who you are. Hey guys don t be afraid to come to the general meetings and meet your fellow members or for that matter don t be afraid to help at events if you don t have a race car, being close to the track as a flaggie is a great way to see the action. You don t have to be experienced as we give you training and put you with someone who knows what s happening. Coming to the general meeting at The Golden Gate Hotel you can have cleansing ale or two and chat to the guys and find out how to set up your car or find out how you can get started in motorkhanas, sprints, hillclimbs etc., we don t bite and are only too happy to help and pass on knowledge. On a lighter note, I recently had a phone call from fellow member Harry Firth. Harry informed me about his new address and then informed me about his new museum that is being set up and received an invitation to view the work so far, as I was visiting my mother in Hastings the following Saturday, I took up Harry s offer. Harry took me and Kris to a new big shed at his house where Harry is covering the walls with murals of his motorsport and personal history consisting of posters Harry has produced in recent times. There will also be a plasma screen put up so racing videos can be viewed whilst enjoying a meal from Harry s cookbook (for a small fee) and Harry will answer questions and have a chat with you. Kris and I spent an hour and a half listening to several stories and were enthralled and had a few laughs with Harry. So when the museum is finished, the club is to be invited down to check it out, and from what I have seen, it will be well worth the trip to Hastings. cheers Bruce

Holden Club TORQUE July 2011 page 18 Webmaster Torque Hi all and welcome to the July magazine. Website stats for June show 59,657 hits and 2,957 visits. Most visited pages after the home page was the Brighton Holden Sprint Series followed by Club Cars and then the Calendar. The most popular download was the video HSCCV Highlights, followed by the short video of Holdens at Winton. Jason s LC was again the most popular Club Car details page, followed by Bruce s VN and then Steve s LJ. Results for the recent events at Sandown & Winton are on the website. Pics for the Sandown event should be up by the time you read this. Some new members cars have been added to the Club Cars page, Geoff s EH, Michael s LJ, Slav s HQ, Brett s ute and Jason s ute. If you d like to add or change your car details page send me an . Sandown 26th June, started slow, sad to see cars breaking down or damaged. We all know how much time and effort goes into keeping them going. The afternoon went much smoother, by about 4pm some had 5 runs, and you could have had more. At 4pm only 2 cars lined up on the grid, then it was decided to pack up earlier. Thanks again to FFCC & helpers for another well run event. ps... went to see Cars 2 with the kids, really enjoyed it, highly recommended for rev heads. 26 Holden Club TORQUE July 2011 page 26 Hi there After a longer break than I would have preferred, we are heading for the Southern Highlands and Wakefield Park on 11 th, 12 th and 13 th November This Shannons Spring Invitation will be a great way to wind up the year and catch up with all your racing compatriots before the Christmas silly season gets under way. Being almost summer time, there ll be plenty of daylight; and we re setting aside lots of track time for our regular racing categories. Naturally, there ll be the usual Private Practice and Masters sessions on the Friday, for those who want it. So please mark your diary for mid-november, remembering the great meetings we ve had in years past. Since we value your support, through thick and thin, I will come back to you shortly with some ideas to save you time and money in these times when both are in short supply! Best Regards Charles Jardine FoSC Event Director
