5 TORQUE the Holden Club magazine September page 5 Sandown 500 V8 supercars by Cameron Chivers Over the weekend I was lucky enough to get a tour through the FPR Jeld Wen Falcon garage. The run down of the cars performance and stats was provided by team owner Charlie Schwerkolt. With the up coming endurance races Alex Davidson will be able supported by his co driver is John McIntyre. Some supercar stats: There is 1.67km of cabling in the car Cost $520,000 to build The team costs $2.5 million a year to run one car The engines are rebuilt every 3000Km Cost of engine rebuild is $25,000 with a total of 10 each year The only factory parts are bonnet, roof, boot lid,. 9 TORQUE the Holden Club magazine September page 9 Secretary s Report September 2013 Hello and welcome to September. I dragged the Honda out of mothballs to compete at the PI- ARC sprint at Phillip Island on the 18 th August. Smithy was also there in the Yellow beast doing some good times (the only way that I passed him was when he accidentally switched his fuel pump off) as well as the new Vic V8s racing series. It is very interesting to watch a race where you know most of the competitors. I especially liked the wet race where Steve Jones Torana finished on the podium and Pirate Pete Stewart finished at the pointy end of the field. It was my first time at the Island with the Honda and it really took me a while to come to grips with it. It didn t help that the weather was all over the place. It finally dried out enough for me to set some reasonable times but I think that there is still more to be found. We have our first HSCCV/HSVOC event coming up at Sandown and we need competitors and officials. For Club Permit holders your time is running out and you will need to have officiated or supplied an official at least one event for you to get your Club Permit reviewed. Group 5 and Motorkhana News The final round of the Group 5 speed series is being run on Cup Day by FFCC and is usually a great event to compete in although there is one day that I would rather forget. I hope to be competing in it again this year. The AMC is coming up in SA on October 6 th and the 9 th round of the VMC is on October 20 th at Pakenham. The next Group 5 motorkhana will be held at Werribee on October 27 th. It looks like a busy October if we include that little race at Bathurst. Phil Slater

11 TORQUE the Holden Club magazine September page 11 While one is in Italy by Ian Smith The title for the article...while one is in Italy is apt as it covers something most of us petrol heads have in our bucket lists. On our recent overseas holiday we toured most of Italy...from Pisa to Florence, Rome, Naples and the Amalfi coast. In the middle of all that, we had some time in Bologna as Jan wanted to do Italian cooking classes while we were there and we found out that Bologna has the best cooking schools in Italy. She booked and attended a good one. I know, I tasted the results yumm! I also found out that Bologna is the centre of the Italian motor industry with Ducati, Ferrari, Pagani, Maserati and Lamborghini either in Bologna or in the surrounding suburbs or villages around Bologna. Can t miss a chance like that! I looked at arranging visits to any/all of these places- either their factories and/or museums and then it started to get all too hard. Pre-pay for visits, collect visitor vouchers, arrange a hire car (we arrived by hi-speed train), arrange maps and parking plus driving no, racing on Italian motostradas to get around and also avoid other drivers who have scant regard for road rules ( I have driven in Italy before!) meant nup! the easy way will be to go on an arranged tour. A scan of the Bologna Tourist Board website shows a number of motoring tour companies, so I select a few and go and look at what they offer on their sites. I find one (My MotorLand) that offers a variety of tours a ½ day RED tour to Ferrari at Maranello outside Bologna or a whole day RED tour to Ferrari and of course Ducati. Or an Italian Production whole day tour covering all 4 car makers. Of interest to me was the BLACK AND RED whole day tour with visits to the Lamborghini tourist area, museum and Lamborghini Production facilities at Sant Agna outside Bologna followed by a trip off to Ferrari s museum at Maranello via their test facilities at Modena. I book a tour with them before leaving Australia..it s all organized! I get collected at our digs in Bologna by my Italian driver and (English speaking) guide, Rossella and I find I am on a tour of..one! Yep, me myself and I am the only person that day. And that works in my favour when, after arriving at the Lamborghini Tourist facility (across the road from the Lamborghini factory and museum) and after having a coffee and watch crazy Yanks pay LOTS of Euros for 15 minutes in a Lamborghini (there was a choice of 6 see pic shows two), I am collected by one of the senior Marketing/Customer service people from Lamborghini and taken to the factory.

12 TORQUE the Holden Club magazine September page 12 After a viewing of the technical diagrams, pictures and posters in the factory foyer plus an manufacturing briefing and explanation (which is all the large tour groups get) I am ushered into this shiny sparkling clean production area that makes Lamborghinis. AUDI owns Lamborghini and have sunk billions of Euro into this factory to make it state of the art and it shows! First stop inside is..engine Assembly and I am watching technicians putting V10 and V12 engines together for the current range of Gallardo and Aventador plus offshore boat racing engines. (NO Photos allowed unfortunately) Next stop Transmission assembly then into the Interior area watching seats being made (they have LOTS of electrics in them) and I actually get a chance to inspect and pick hides for use in the interiors. They only use female(!) inspectors to find faults in the leather hides and these are marked on the hide with a china pencil either a circle around a large fault or a X on a small one. Then a computer scans the hide, recognizes the faulty areas and then works out how to cut the hide to fit an interior with minimum scrap or waste (it amounts to only a few % of the total area of each hide). More manufacturing areas and more parts and assemblies are shown being put together. Then to the actual vehicle assembly line where I watch all these parts and sub-assemblies come together. It is here that I get an explanation about how the CF monocoque shells are made and tailored to fit the add-on aluminium engine and suspension frames. After this, it is watch the final inspection checks on each car (there are some strange colour combos here e.g. Matt black paint with bright orange suede interior!) before each gets a fluids fill and then engine start. Each car gets a minimum of 200kms on the roads surrounding Sant Agna to check assembly quality, leakages and of course PERFORMANCE before being shipped off for sale (with most customers either Americans or Chinese!) I get nearly 1½hours in the factory (instead of the usual 30 mins for large groups) and am then let loose in the museum out the front of the factory. It is the museum one actually sees from the road (as seen in this pic) and inside.. (this is part of the upstairs area) After Lamborghini, next stop Ferrari! Arriving in Modena from Sant Agna, it is not hard to spot the Ferrari factory, which on the day I am there is getting an extension to its wind tunnel (which is also used by the F1 team). I cannot visit the factory as I am not having a Ferrari built (you need to put the $ down and buy to get in!) but the nearby Maranello museum and its surrounds just up the road are impressive.

13 TORQUE the Holden Club magazine September page 13 You certainly know you are at Ferrari as this is at the car park entrance at Maranello and after a lunch in the restaurant adjoining the Ferrari museum and Ferrari test U-drive facility (anyone want to test drive a Ferrari?) I head off into the Ferrari Museum.

14 TORQUE the Holden Club magazine September page 14 Lamborghini is primarily road car based where as Ferrari pushes its motor racing roots! You see this as you walk past the Museum admissions counter and the theme continues as you walk around Ferrari red race cars everywhere!
