Holden Club TORQUE May 2011 page 6 Committee TORQUE President s Report - Vlad Kowal Club Meetings and Guest Speakers At our most recent Committee Meetings and at the last club meeting, we have raised the question of club meetings only occurring every second month. The plan is for us to make this a big meeting, and have a guest speaker at each of those meetings. The thinking was that members will be able to plan to put this night aside to attend the meeting in the belief that if there won t be another meeting for two months, it might be four months in between meetings if they miss one. The format of the meetings will be changed further. We won t be repeating what we have already said in our newsletter, but adding new material. We will also be asking one club member from the floor to volunteer to speak about something (the racecar, the engine that is being built, plans for their motorkhana beast etc). We think that we have reached this point because of the increased busyness of our lives and the fact that our newsletters and website are so good that all members are well-informed about the club and our activities. The meetings in 2011 that will still go ahead under this plan are May, July, September, November and the December Presentation Night. Please feel free to comment to any of the Committee members or myself. The Future Plans for HSCCV on Facebook and Twitter Following on from the above item, the Committee spent a great deal of time discussing and feeling positive about creating a Facebook and Twitter presence on the web. We are keen to get members talking to each other and sharing their stories and comments about the club and their motorsport activities. This will be an item for further discussion at the next meeting and your views would be greatly appreciated. Helpers at Sandown on Mother s Day I was extremely pleased and proud to see so many of our members come to support the Brighton Holden Sprint Series at Sandown on Mother s Day. Their presence made the day possible which helped the event run so smoothly. Thanks to all for answering the call. A special Thank You to Kim McConchie, James Towers, Kylie Kastelic, Peter Stewart, Steve Jones friend (..name?), Chris Lethborg, Geoff Fitzpatrick, Frank Rogan, Ray Cardwell, Bruce Lethborg (Clerk Of Course), Phil Slater and myself (both flagging and running), and Ian for his moral and photo support on the day as well. Club T-Shirts and Caps Martin still has plenty of club caps and T-shirts in stock. Bring your $20 or $40 to our next meeting to buy one or both, or pick up your free 2011 cap as a member. HSCCV members at Bathurst over Easter I encourage all to read the report put together by Wayne Paola about the awesome Easter weekend at Bathurst for some of our lucky and skilled members. For example, Wayne was running close to being black-flagged for being too fast (and this was while his steering rack bolts were loose!) A great story about a great trip! cont d...

Holden Club TORQUE May 2011 page 7 Committee TORQUE President s Report - Vlad Kowal cont d. Sign Up A Member There are still club points on offer for any member who signs up new members. If you have signed any new members this year, make sure that you follow up with Bruce so that he awards the points to you. The coveted Club Champion trophy is at stake here! Sandown, Mothers Day driving display I had a great day at Sandown on May 8 th, still running the old 253 in 3KVK. The rain slowed me down at first but then I found the grip not too bad around most of the track. Spinning once between turns 3 and 4 in the dry was bad enough, but spinning in the same place in the wet was unforgivable, as I gave the Armco a love-tap on the way through. Apologies to all about causing the red flag to come out at that point (thanks Kylie for saving me from being T-boned while across the track!) and abandoning the run. Back to L plates for me. However, that run seemed to give me my fastest times for the day! Hard to figure, but I hope that it means that I am starting to learn how to handle the Commodore. regards Vlad

Holden Club TORQUE May 2011 page 8 Committee TORQUE Secretary s Report Phil Slater Hello and welcome to May. I had a great time at Sandown with the little CRX being uncatchable in the wet. I have noticed a pattern in my driving in that unlike most people my first run is usually my fastest. This is usually because I start out pretty quickly, try to go faster and break something on the car and then go slower. At Sandown it had more to do with the weather although I did finish up with no front brakes. In contrast Vlad kept getting faster and faster until he crashed. He actually did his fastest time in the wet! This may have had something to do with Greg adjusting his float level to prevent fuel starvation. Vlad and I also shared officialling duties on the day and this worked reasonably well but would have been difficult if we had to work on our cars between runs. I m looking forward to the next round of the Brighton Holden Sprint Series and hope to get back out on a motorkhana track soon but will be having a few days off in June escaping the winter in Bali. cheers Phil Slater

Holden Club TORQUE May 2011 page 12 HSCCV members go to Bathurst Easter 2011 The cars that ate Bathurst in It all started with a call from Mark Kakouri back in November There was going to be an event over Easter 2011 at Bathurst, held by Yehaa Events, and with a 45 car regularity on the card to be run by Steve Lacey of the New South Wales Road Racing club. Would I be interested? Um, yeah I would. Fast forward to April 20 th 2011, 8.45am. John and I are waiting to sight Mr. Black out of the fog of traffic that is Canterbury Rd in Kilsyth. I first met John in July 1976, and knew from the first day he was a Porsche fanatic. We have been mates ever since. Hungry Jacks had been most satisfying, but it was time to get a wriggle on. At the Shell in Lilydale we hooked up with the two girls that were coming along just for the hell of it. Julie, we all know. Coming along to enjoy our company and develop her skills at taking photo s of her boys on the track. Tracey is a friend of Julie s that also came along to have a weekend away and was a very welcome addition to the road trip, a very busy woman that came along with a total bunch of strangers to the races. We planned to travel through the day and stay overnight at Cootamundra. This was mostly due to the fact that my red VE seems to be a kangaroo magnet, so driving at night was not an option. We set off from Coota at 7.30 am on the Thursday morning and arrived at Bathurst at that morning. Mark and Meni had arrived already and were setting up camp. With Mark and Meni was Spiro (they all seemed to call him Spiz), a friend of many years and Meni s wife Eleanor. The official program had our first practice as the next morning at 8.25 am. What a great way to open Good Friday. Before that could happen though, we had the official docs to collect, sign in, scrutineer etc. and set up camp, and get to the shops for supplies before the Easter shut down happened. We started by collecting our paddock transit passes, wrist bands, circuit transit passes etc from the accreditation office in Harris Park. Then hook up with Steve Lacey to get our door numbers and sponsors stickers. Sign in with the organizers next, and then prepare for scrutineering. We lined up for scrutineering behind a few other cars, and spectated what was going on. I had heart failure when the scrutineers asked for the driving suits and also high beam headlights and front and rear indicators on the cars. Oh crap, maybe my car and gear would get knocked back. As it turned out there was no need to worry, the car passed and I was on my way. Looking at our cars, Marks VH was a stand out. Its presentation is such it would stand out at any car show. Michael Budge and his son Callum had joined us at the camp site late on Thursday afternoon, bringing with him the HSCCV trailer and gear. So our group was now up to 11 people. Good Friday dawned (no pun intended) with a heavy fog. This threatened to delay the start of the day and eat into our track time. We were on after the Porsche NSW regularity boys, and they did not get onto the track until around 10am when the fog cleared enough. cont d

Holden Club TORQUE May 2011 page 13 HSCCV members go to Bathurst Easter 2011 When the NSWRRC regularity hit the track, Steve Lacey led us out. Greg was the first of us, then Meni, myself and Mark a little further back. The warm up lap showed up a problem for Meni. I was directly behind him and could hear his GT 351 Falcon popping loudly and lighting up the exhaust tips under the car. I figured it would clear up, but the car succumbed to its troubles and I passed him before Murrays corner still under control of the starter. Once the warm up lap was completed, I went for it. I only wanted to get re-acquainted with the circuit in this session, and in doing so passed a few cars and kept out of trouble. I could see Mark behind me for most of the session, and just hoped he would love this place as much as I did after last years foray. Having borrowed a timing device from Mark, I was able to see my lap times after I crossed the finish line each lap. Now, let me say I was working hard during this practice session, but only recorded a best lap of 2 mins 53. That s three seconds slower than my best last year. I did expect to do a little better than that, and commented to Mark after the session I don t know if I can go any faster. The session had also been shortened by 5 minutes to make up for fog losses. My new side exit exhaust sounded magic inside the car and the T5 gearbox also felt like its shift quality was made for the mountain. Meni s car had suffered a coil failure in the marshalling area, explaining his popping and flaming 351. Easily fixed, and despite the early setback, Meni did not skip a beat, just fixed it. The second session was set for 1.25 pm that afternoon. The sky was blue with barely a cloud to be seen anywhere. We headed out in the same order as the practice session, but now the game was on. After the warm up lap, I got past Greg going up mountain straight, Greg taking things easy. I set out after a yellow HT Monaro, watching my mirrors all the while. Pushing a little harder and getting a full 20 minute session, I managed to get below 2.50 a couple of times before finally cracking a 2.45 second lap. The celebration on the in car footage is pretty loud I must say. 8 seconds faster than the practice best lap. Every lap felt as though I was on the last lap of the 1986 Tooheys Save for the missed gears, they were great laps. I had not topped up the tank for this run, and paid the price 5 laps in, with a splutter at the top of mountain straight. I came to a stop and realized I have now run out of fuel at every track I have competed on with the exception of Winton. I need a bigger tank. (hint...hint! Ed)

Holden Club TORQUE May 2011 page 14 HSCCV members go to Bathurst Easter 2011 This session Meni made up for the first, with a full 20 minutes. Greg thought he was shown a mechanical black flag and pulled in a few laps early. The flag was for someone else so he lost those laps. He was still to break three minutes, as was Meni. Mark was now into the 40 s, and happy with his progress. That night, we gathered around the lap top to check out some video footage and revel in the sounds of V8 engines on sacred ground. The GT 351 sounded as though it was trying to shake Satan out of hells bed, Marks sounded as though it was trying to invoke Brocky s spirit, Greg s and my own more subdued, but at home on the mountain anyway. A good night s sleep seemed impossible in a tent the first night, Thursday. Friday night was going to be harder as the temp was due to plummet to below zero. After only three hours total sleep, it was time to get up again. We were the first on track this morning, and it was bloody cold. We warmed the cars up, and headed for the track. This session was so early, and on a cold track, we all just agreed we would just feel things out again, and setup to go hard in the Saturday afternoon session. As a result, there were no dramatic improvements in times. Meni s GT did however, lunch its T5. Saturday afternoon came along very quickly. The gearbox in the GT had been changed to the spare, with Mark and Spiz helping out. A credit to the boys, particularly Meni. He did not give up despite having to make two trips to town for universals for the tail shaft. Well done mate. Now it was time to go for it. We did around 7 laps, and on the 5 th lap I managed to crack a lap I never imagined. During the lap, I missed the second to third change at least once, coming out of Griffins Bend, and got caught out behind a slow car coming out of the chase. Leading up to that, I had decided to stay in fourth gear all the way down Conrod. The car sounded amazing. Anyway, on the 6 th time over the start finish line the previous lap display came up and said OMG, is that a mistake, am I seeing things. For half of lap 6, I was convinced that the lack of sleep in my tent was playing tricks with my mind and my sight, but eventually, I realized what it meant. A 2.40 was more than possible. Mark had been close behind me and was catching in the early part of the session. On the straights, his car is just so fast, approaching at an alarming rate or disappearing at the same rate if you are behind him. I was watching for him out of each corner, when on about lap 4 I noticed he started dropping back. Next I saw him pulled over at McPhillamy Park. cont d...

Holden Club TORQUE May 2011 page 15 HSCCV members go to Bathurst Easter 2011 His panhard rod had lost its locating bolt on the diff housing, dragging the fallen component on the road to where he came to a stop. Meni s change over gear box held up fine and he completed the session, and Greg cracked the 3 minute barrier getting down to Seeing Marks car on the flatbed truck brought out the best of Mr. Budge, with the resulting ribbing sure to last a while. After that session, it was discovered my cars steering rack was loose. That s right, not secured to the k frame properly. Must get that fixed before Sunday. Done quickly and easily with Mark and Greg s help. Mark got his panhard rod sorted with help of Nick Parkers spare parts bin, and bled his brakes at the same time. Before the rod came adrift, Mark had reduced his lap time to 2.44, so he was rapt. This was his first ever visit to the mount, so he was going hard. With one session to go, he was already one full second faster than the best time from the previous year. Our Sunday session was not until 2pm or so, so we had time to lounge around a bit, and pack up our gear for an early departure. This time, we were let out onto the track in a different order. Greg was happy to be let out later than earlier sessions, Mark happy to get out higher than earlier, and me about the same as before. Either way, this was it. Now or never. I set my sights on a 2.40 lap, Greg was going for sub 2.50, Mark wanted to get some fast clean laps and Meni just wanted to enjoy and savour the place one last time. I was behind a beautiful black Porsche, which in turn had an M3 and Mark in front of him. I took two or three laps to dispose of the Porsche. I don t think he would have believed a shitty blue Commodore would be so close to him across the top. Having held me up across the top, I passed him and now had Mark in front of me. Coming onto pit straight in second, I change into third and hold that all the way to Hell Corner. I jump on the picks just before the fence on the right hand side changes to blue, and then blip back to second gear. It s a great corner to get a little drift going to the ripple strip, then into third and aim for the top. With the ratio s in the T5, I get almost to the hump before needing to pull fourth. God damn it, it sounds so good. Over the hump, picking up speed due to gravity and on the brakes still way too early. From fourth back to third then second, and power up to the cutting. My 3.08 to 1 diff ratio makes second possible out of Griffins Bend, but with a little more bravery I think a higher speed through there in third is the answer. Back to second for the cutting. This is a beautiful part of the track. You really hear your engine sounds bouncing off the walls that are so close to you. Short shift to third on the hump, and then flat out where Dick hit the rock. There is so much history here.

Holden Club TORQUE May 2011 page 16...cont d HSCCV members go to Bathurst Easter 2011 Feather the throttle through the gap before Sulman Park, then pull fourth at the highest part of the track. Speed builds here using fourth, and is easy on the engine at the same time. Last year, I was staying in third gear all the way across the top, not realizing I was causing me to be slow, and revving the engine way too much. Back to now though, from fourth I drop to third under brakes at Brocks Skyline (see mag front page pic...ed) then a little bit of gas again before pulling second just before turning right for the Dipper. Out of the Dipper, hard in second, to the sound of my own private orchestra, third gear and on the gas for just a bit before Forrest Elbow, back to second, turn and point, all the while feeling for just the slightest hint of under steer. Once through, on the gas hard again, second gear to 6300, third gear to 6300, fourth gear and just over 6000RPM before the chase. Half way along the short straight in the chase, on the picks, black brake dust pilling out of the front wheels, back to third and turn. Ok to use a little ripple strip on the left here, you just have to keep speed up through this corner. It s too fast for second gear and dreadfully slow in third if you get it wrong. Hard on the gas again, pull fourth in my car for just a couple of seconds down to Murray s Corner before jumping hard on the picks and shifting down to third, then second and then turn, touch the ripple strip on the left again and go. Despite this I had no chance of catching Mark going up or coming down the mountain, even though he was not using full throttle, but across the top, I could catch him. Watching his car dance its jig in front of me was beautiful. We were close in overall speed and being competitive, but our cars were quite different. I could tell he was also having brake issues still from the previous day. I could hear his engine exhaust from my car, and on the down change into Forrest Elbow, it was magnificent to listen to. We were held up by traffic two or three times in this session, so we could both have gone quite a bit faster than where we ended up. I managed to improve my best to , but the timer in my car said Mark improved to , but with his GPX Pro saying Greg in this session had fuel pick up problems and only managed three timed laps with a best of I just know he had a sub 2.50 lap coming had the pick up problem not reared its head. He was just so confident before we went out. Meni needs special mention. A big car, the XB GT 351 is a beautiful beast. Shod with slicks on Simmons wheels, Meni managed to wheel this critter around the mountain in 2.51 for the final session. I would have loved to have seen it myself from the side of the track. Remember that I grew up on a diet of Allan Moffat Falcons....cont d

Holden Club TORQUE May 2011 page 17 HSCCV members go to Bathurst Easter 2011 cont d Every time we returned to the camp site, there was an excited celebration between all of the drivers, such was the buzz about being on the mountain. At the chequered flag, all the marshal s were clapping for us (probably the entire field) which made each driver feel like a king. Even more so was the wonderful encouragement from those that came with us, but did not get to drive a race car on the track. How good would it have been to be able to take a passenger for a ride on this magic black top. Amongst the friends there with us, there are some very special relationships at play, and I consider myself fortunate to have been amongst this special group of people. There must be 2000 photos to look at over the coming weeks, video footage taken from the side of the track, and three hours or so from inside the cars. I hope I get the chance to go again in 2012 for a crack at 2.39 which in my car, with my current engine is do able. As no one got disqualified this year for going under 2.40, I figure I would get away with one bad lap next year. Mark, Budge and Adam would be capable of mid 35 s or less here with the power they have. Thanks to Mark for keeping us all pumped, Eleanor, Spiro, my dear mate John for coming along, Julie for all her support and encouragement, Tracey for the same and her great company, both Budge s for bringing the HSCCV trailer and being there with great wit and humour and endless energy. I personally missed some of the boys back home and hope to do it next year with them back at the track. 19 Holden Club TORQUE May 2011 page 19 Club TORQUE Motorkhana/Group5 Frank Rogan (and Vice-President) Hi Folks, I trust you all had a good Easter break, I m sure many will agree that it s not long enough. I did a bit of work on one car in the stable amongst the family stuff and some fiberglass work too; a good balance. There s been a few events since last month s publication, in both speed and non-speed disciplines. We ve had a Hillclimb that is part of the Holden-Ford Series at Haunted Hills, the VSSC Supersprint at Sandown on Easter Sunday, the HvF sprint at Sandown on Mothers Day with a VMC on the same day at Pakenham. CRBCC also managed to run their Group 5 Motorkhana despite the dark grey clouds looming but it was a woeful turnout with only 11 entrants. I think I counted 9 of their own as officials. Total overkill for the numbers of competitors, and same can be said for the control of the test areas. Probably would have worked well with 30 competitors. That s the thing, with Group 5 being an enter-on-theday, you cannot predict the number of competitors that will turn up. The poor buggers would have done some dough running the event too. On the upside, we all completed 10 runs, it didn t rain and we all left before 2 o clock! HSCCV had 3 competitors, Bruce, Malcolm and myself, along with a 4.5 strong Cardwell support crew. Even the kids were right into the car action (see pic...ed) None of us seemingly did that well, but Mal really struggled with his Galant yet again despite the newly rebuilt carby. Results have not been posted but are available on the e-group. With personal commitments I couldn t attend the motorkhana on Mothers Day for much more than a couple of hours, so I made the decision to help out at Sandown. Entries in the high fifties and temperature in the low teens with copious amounts of rain made for a cold and slippery morning at the track. Normally I am a fixture on turn four at Sandown (Flag point 2) but due to my requirement for a quick exit at lunchtime, I got posted at the start-finish line with Geoff. I was very grateful to be there perched under the start-finish platform, for it was the only flag point where you could be doing the job trackside and still stay completely dry. A total contrast to the beginnings of hypothermia at a certain hillclimb a couple of years ago. As I was leaving Sandown I started thinking about horrible it would be down at Pakenham Island (what happens when it really rains!) and whether they actually managed to complete the day! Events coming include a Group 5 motorkhana at Pakenham on May 22, and a Khanacross at Pakenham on June 5 followed by a VMC on June 19. And there s a bit of time to prepare for the next HvF Sprint round, which is on at Sandown on June cont d

Holden Club TORQUE May 2011 page 20 Motorkhana/Group5 Frank Rogan cont d. Club TORQUE Okay, time for some photos from out and about. Enjoy. Hanging at the lights It s a woody! Who s breaking the rules? Is there a hidden message? See you sideways or at the meeting. Frank.

Holden Club TORQUE May 2011 page 21 Club TORQUE Motorsport Peter Scott Hello all and welcome to the May update. Our Haunted Hills hillclimb was run on the 17 th April with the fog thick on arrival and visibility of less than 50 metres. The brass monkeys weren t happy early on, it was that cold. Thankfully the sun broke through about 8:30am and the fog lifted to a beautiful day. We had 22 entrants on the day, a few less than expected but the forecast earlier in the week possibly discouraged some from making the trip. Once the formalities were done with, everyone took to the track for a good day s fun. The small field meant that everyone got 8 runs in 4 in the morning on the standard loop and 4 in the afternoon on the figure 8 layout. There were 7 or 8 Porsches there using the day as practice before their own event and it was the high point of the day to see a couple of GT3 s and a 911 being beaten by a $1200 Hyundai Excel! We were well supported in the officials department with Pete Stewart and Steve Jones on flags, Wayne Paola ably assisted by son Chris on the staging area and me on the start line. Everyone running gave it their best shot, Phil Slater leaving the course backwards (again!) with only minor damage this time, and Vlad out wringing the neck of his Diesel Astra. Sandown was run on Mother s Day, 8 th May with approximately 60 entries and wet weather looming on the horizon. (see pics in this edition...ed) The event started dry but the rain arrived around 11:00 and the lap times increased after that. Steve Jones made a big impression with his XU1 following a freshen up (busted axle notwithstanding...ed) and Phil Slater proving that maximum power isn t always necessary to lead the pack. The CRX did suffer in the brakes department and ran out of handbrake on the trip home, (because that was all that was left!). Unfortunately I couldn t make it for the event, but from what I ve heard congratulations go to Bruce for a smooth well run event despite the conditions. It appears that some changes in the rules are coming, with news that CAMS is getting tougher on safety, particularly in club level vehicles. As I understand it at this point, every car fitted with a roll cage now has to be logbooked. The rules change on 1 st January 2012 and to avoid having to upgrade your cage to meet the new standards, then you must have a logbook before the end of this year. I am still in the process of going through all the new changes and minutes of the meeting that led to this, so I will have a full run down of the rules and process for log book registration next month for those who don t have one yet. Meanwhile, have fun and keep the shiny side up! Pete.

Holden Club TORQUE May 2011 page 22 Membership/Club Point Scores Hi Guys, I m writing this on my new computer after my old one fried the hard drive. Unfortunately, the membership files were not recovered from the old hard drive, but, all is not lost as I have an old copy of the membership program that I will install and bring up to date. I hope to have club championship points shortly. If you haven t received this month s magazine, it means your membership has not been renewed. I have compiled a list of non-renewals for the editor and I m a bit disappointed at the number of non-renewals. The VN is getting a new coat of paint and won t be at Sandown for the Mother s day meeting, as I am running the meeting. 23 Holden Club TORQUE May 2011 page 23 Webmaster Torque Into May already and a taste of winter. Forgot how cold it can get working in the shed at night. Oh, well, a chance to stay inside and catch up with some paperwork. The stats in April only show till the 25th, so they re a bit lower than they should be. We had 38,329 total hits with 2,521 visits. The most visited pages after the Home page was the Brighton Holden Sprint Series, followed by Club Cars. Most popular download was the short video of Holden s at Winton, followed by the Membership Form. Most popular Club Cars details page was Jason s LC, followed by Bruce s VN and then Wayne s VK. There was a slight delay with the processing of the final payment for the website which resulted in the website being down for a short while. Thanks again to Mecomm for the support. Sandown results are up. We hope to have some pics of Sandown and Bathurst for you soon. cheers Alex Club Apparel and Stock Greetings all, Our new club T shirts made their debut at the March meeting, and have been selling quite well in that short period of time. If you haven't already seen the shirt, its white with our red and black club logo on it. Available in most sizes even XXL, it looks awesome and is incredible value at $20. Come and see me at the May 23 meeting, a must for all members and supporters. If you have paid your club membership for 2011 please come to the next general meeting at the Golden Gate hotel and collect your red club baseball cap, you have paid for it with your membership fee and unless you live greater than 100 kilometres from the Melbourne CBD, I will post it to you if you send me a text with your name and address to Congratulations to Wayne Paola for posting the fastest club car lap time and being crowned club King of the Mountain at the recent Bathurst Easter event. Thanks to all for your support, see you at the next meeting, cruising eights, speed restricting sixes and chugging fours... Martin. P.S. we need more bums on seats at the meetings, and whilst you re there come get your club cap if you haven't done so already.
