TORQUE the Holden Club magazine January page 5 Presidents Report Bruce Lethborg Hi fellow members, hope you all had a great Christmas New Year break. A lot has been going on since the last newsletter. First off was the AGM. The 2013 AGM was the best attended for quite a few years, and as a result, we have for the first time in a while a full committee. Let me introduce you to them. President: Bruce Lethborg, I think most of you know me, so not much to say here, but I think 2014 will be a great year for the club. Vice president: Ron Klein, Those of you who go to sprints will know Ron s replica LC XU-2 Torana. Ron brings much enthusiasm and fresh ideas to the committee and has taken on looking after our motorsport events. I look forward to working with Ron this year. Secretary: Phil Slater, Phil has been in this role for a few years now and does a great job and is keen to see the club grow. Treasurer: Kris Lethborg, Kris is my son, poor bugga, and he is looking forward to keeping the books well and hoping to get on the track more this year. Social: Geoff Fitzpatrick, Geoff has the lovely EH seen at many sprints, and he has already got many things on the go for the year, and he will be working with his equal at HSV owners club on social events, so stay tuned. Editor: Kim McConchie, Kim has been club editor in past years and has offered his services again. If Kim keeps up the standard he has in the past, all I can say is, hold on to your hats folks, it s gonna be a fun ride. Group 5: Ray Cardwell, Ray stepped in as VP last year and has returned to the committee as G5 rep. So we will be kept informed of G5 events and represented on the G5 panel. We hope to see the SS ute out a bit this year. Stock: Martin Carabott, Last but by no means least, Martin has been our stock person for a few years and he is hoping he can move the old stock we have and introduce new stock soon. Martin assures us that his Commodore will see the light of day and hit the track this year. So there you have it, a full committee for A committee full of ideas and enthusiasm. We are going to mix up things a bit this year by having general meetings at different venues and March will be the first at Ron Klein s man cave in Moorabbin. We are hoping to have a few guests at meetings as well, and as mentioned before, social events. With the announcement of Holden ceasing manufacture in this country in 2017, came some minor promotion of the club via the print and TV media. ABC radio contacted me as president for my thoughts on the closure but by the time I got the message it was too late to be interviewed, but the Herald Sun managed to get an article and photo in the paper. ABC TV news wanted an interview as well, but I was unable to do that, so I passed it on to Ron and they did the interview at his man cave and Ron thinks as a result, Man and Machine contacted him and they have done an episode at the man cave about his collection of Aussie muscle cars. Ron wore a club shirt for the day, so HSCCV will be right up front when the

TORQUE the Holden Club magazine January page 6 episode goes to air soon. We will let you know via , club website and facebook of the date as soon as Ron knows. One of the new things for 2014 is the meetings have now been moved to forth Wednesday of every second month from March meeting. So mark the dates down in your calendar. Our first meeting is the 2013 presentation at Cresco Park Warrandyte on Monday 27 th January from 6pm, that is the Australia day holiday. This is a great location at a private park on the banks of the Yarra river, it is kid friendly has power, lighting and toilet facilities. There are a few surprises in store for the awards this year, so come along and see if you have won an award. It is BYO meat, drinks and chairs, the club will provide salads and nibblies, so for catering purposes, please contact me on with your numbers. Sandown have finally given a date for our sprint, it will be 31 st of August. This will be a round of the Victorian Super Sprint Series so entries should be good. We also have a sprint at Winton on June 29 th, both of these events are being run in conjunction with HSV owners club and we will need helpers. If you can help, mark them down in your calendars, phones and diaries. After many requests, I am holding another private track day at Wakefield Park on Monday April 28 th. The guys who came up last year had a ball. There is good accommodation at a reasonable price at the track and Goulburn is close by. The numbers will be capped, so if you would like to come along to enjoy another track with plenty of track time guaranteed, call me on to secure your place. I can guarantee that it will cost much less than a sprint with heaps more fun. A reminder that memberships are now due. If you are running in an event soon, you will need to renew now. You can renew at the presentation meeting. Cheers Bruce Treasurers Report Kris Lethborg Hi all, welcome to 2014! Its looking to be a awesome year, with some great events lining up and I'm quite excited to get into it. Being new to the role this year I don't have great deal to report except the current balance sitting at $26, but I should have a detailed balance next month In other news don't forget General meetings have moved to the 4 th Wednesday of the month starting with March 26 th Also I d like to put out a large thank you to Kim McConchie and Phil Slater for the use of their Torana's at mine and Mel's wedding on the 13th of December. It was a great way for me and the boys to arrive and made it just that little more special Otherwise I look forward to seeing you all at the presentation BBQ at Cresco park on the 27 th of Jan! Kris Lethborg

TORQUE the Holden Club magazine January page 7 REPORT FROM THE VICE PRESIDENT Welcome to 2014, which I know will be a great year for HSCCV. Last year, I decided it was time to get off my big fat you know what and play a more active role in the HSCCV. I spoke to el-presidento and we had dinner to discuss. He s a very convincing sales man is our Bruce and before I knew it, I was Vice President and Motorsport Co-ordinator of HSCCV. It is a pleasure to take on these roles and I hope I do them justice. I look forward to making a contribution and to easing the workload carried by Bruce. I am a fairly open fella, so if you want to discuss something, if you have any ideas or if you just want to chat about cars or anything else, holler. The year has kicked off well, with an opportunity for the Club to gain some wonderful media exposure. Holden s decision to pull out of local manufacture paved the way for President Bruce to feature in the Herald Sun on behalf of the Club and for myself to represent us on ABC News during December. It s wonderful that our Club and not others should be seen as the go to for Holden enthusiast comment. Says something about our credibility. Both media events mentioned above seemed to go well and the message we conveyed is that while local Holden manufacture might be dead, the passion for the brand and the product definitely ain t. I trust you all agree. I m still a Holden man always was, always will be. Glenn Everitt from Man and Machine the TV program on Ch 31 - made contact with me over Christmas (perhaps as a result of watching the ABC News) and asked for an opportunity to base an episode of his program on my muscle car collection. I thought long and hard about that 5 or 6 seconds at most - before agreeing that it seemed like a great idea!!! This potentially represents, I thought, my moment in the sun; and following on from the ABC News story, I felt that perhaps there s a career in this for me not!!!!!!!! On Monday just gone, Glenn, his cameraman Nick and sidekick Andrew spent the day with me at my warehouse creating Episode 11, 2014 of Man and Machine. How can it take a whole day to make 30 minutes of TV? How can it be so tiring? Why does it take an hour to set up for a few seconds of footage? Very easily going by last Monday. I m not sure if the intense 36 degree heat made the day any longer or tougher, but, it certainly seemed to. The warehouse was beautiful and cool at 8.00 am in the morning and ugly hot by about noon it was all downhill., perspiration and bad language from there!!!!

TORQUE the Holden Club magazine January page 8 It was a long and tiresome 12 + hour day which ran overtime and caused me to miss the HSCCV January Committee meeting at The Golden Gate Hotel in South Melbourne. But, it was a wonderful day which I hope culminates in a great episode of Man and Machine. I reckon I ll enjoy the show, even if no-one else does. There was a focus on 6 of my cars 4 Torries and 2 Commodores and each was looking resplendent and gorgeous well, I thought so anyway. I spent the entire day in a white HSCCV t-shirt (which I somehow managed to keep reasonably clean) that will give our great Club further exposure. By some modern miracle, the camera lens didn t crack too wide when it turned onto me and I managed to keep my left foot out of my mouth for most of the time (but not all of the time). You can be the judge of the extent to which I made a fool of myself when the episode goes to air over the next few weeks. Fingers crossed. My wife and kids are hoping either I don t come across too poorly or that no-one watches Man and Machine on Ch 31!!!! Based on what I was shown during filming, the club logo was prominent all day and my cars were the stars. Something for me to show the grand kids one day!! This year, you will notice an invigorated HSCCV making a concerted effort to engage and involve its members. Your committee is brimming with enthusiasm and ideas and hopes for a great year. You will notice change, new activities, new social events and new venues. All we need is you, the members to help us make HSCCV an even greater club and a raging success. Please support. Speaking of new venues, you ll be advised of our March Club meeting soon, which will be held at my man cave in Moorabbin. You ll get a taste of the venue from Man and Machine before the meeting if you happen to catch the show. This departure from the usual pub venue provides a wonderful opportunity to do it a bit differently and to meet among the cars after all, it s the cars that we re about!!. The plan at the Man Cave gender neutral of course, women welcome - is for a bit of a BBQ, a cold beverage, a chin wag, a look at a few Holdens and a club meeting, all rolled into one. Who wouldn t want to be a part of that? If you can, come down in a toy of your own. But please come down. I ll be waiting to greet you with open arms. See you there. Happy Cheers Ron Our man in the ABC spotlight Ron K., doing a great job as a club spokesman, and well dressed man about town. Next stop watch for him on Man and Machine, and then rumours abound that he and Bruce will be very special guests on the next Big Brother. Or was it It s A Knockout?

TORQUE the Holden Club magazine January page 9 NOT the news we wanted...editors comment No, it was not the news we wanted at all, but it says something for the club credibility that we were contacted for comments by the media, and both Bruce and Ron did a great job on behalf of HSCCV on the day. While the long term outlook (if any) for the Australian automotive manufacturing industry now rests with Toyota, the knock on effect on Australian industry, and the lost opportunities for university graduates, will be profound. GMH, Ford, MMA etc have been great places to develop engineering, design, and marketing talent of a world class standard, and there are no other major industries that I can think of to fill that role in the future. As we move to becoming a nation of service providers, gravel diggers and rural producers, future generations will no doubt wonder how we managed to lose so much, and to be left with so little. Welcome to the new banana republic? (pictures courtesy Herald Sun Friday Dec )

TORQUE the Holden Club magazine January page 10 Secretary's Report Phil Slater Hello and welcome to I can t believe that it s been 34 years since I first joined the then Torana Club. We have a few events that the club is running either by ourselves or with HSVOC so Club Permit holders will have opportunities to fullfil their obligations. When you get your Permit signed please show me a copy of the CH Qualification Form which is available for download on the club website. I know that there were not a lot of events last year but everything that you have done will be taken into consideration. We have motorkhanas and sprints starting next month so get your car ready and get involved. We will be having meetings bi monthly this year on Wednesdays not Mondays after the first meeting on the 27 th January at Cresco park. I hope that you can come along to this meeting as we will be presenting trophies for last year. Well I d better go now because I might have to evacuate as there are fires all around us here in Craigieburn. Editors Report Kim McConchie Well here I am, back in the big chair, and it s all falling into place like a demolition crew razing the Stokehouse files and formats conflicting with each other happily, NVIDIA drivers falling over themselves and freezing the graphics, and good ol MS Publisher getting upset at being prodded out of the archives and trying to decide if it will work, or take early retirement without notice. Still I m looking forward to another year of being suitably opinionated, politically incorrect when the situation calls for it, and OF COURSE receiving lots of articles, pictures, and accolades from you all, along with the threats of libel & deformation from my favourite lawyers, Shyster, Shyster & Gimcrack. Just send it all through to editor@holdenclub.com and it will be gratefully received. And for those members older than they care to admit, the legend that is Honeybunch Yahootie may be resurrected blank pages and white space may force my hand! 11 TORQUE the Holden Club magazine January page 11 Social & Special Events Geoff Fitzpatrick Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year is looking good for events and getting out and meeting new people with the same interest as we have, increasing our knowledge of motor racing setups, tuning and tyre selection. We had an excellent roll up at Clive Cams before Christmas which gave us lots of information about camshafts and camfollowers.we will be following this with a Penrite Oil tour possibly on the 26 of February BUT THIS HAS TO BE CONFIRMED and I will let you know as soon as this happens. During the year the possible line up is to be:.traction Tyre Centre; Harrops; Shannons; engine rebuilding at Windfords; Koni Shockers; Ignition talk and a Brake and Clutch talk. Looking forward to seeing you all during the year Never stop improving, Regards Geoff Fitzpatrick. The Ed says there are Charity Cruises coming up get those CH plated cars out and about, or just come and have a day out. The Black Saturday Remembrance Cruise organisers are hoping for a good turnout on the day, and with all proceeds going to local CFA s its certainly supporting a good cause. Also coming up on Feb. 9 is the annual Picnic at Hanging Rock, organised by the Macedon Ranges & District Motor Club. It gets bigger and bigger each year with some great individual and club displays. See their website for details: As I see interesting (and ideally community supporting) events coming up I will include them in the mag. I happened to be in Williamstown on Sunday having lunch on the waterside, and there was a Rod & Custom show on up the road so a procession of rods, muscle cars, cruisers and bikes passed by, and EVERYBODY was oohing and ahhing and getting phone pics of them. Damn, I wasn t in a Torana!

TORQUE the Holden Club magazine January page 12 CLIVE CAMS FACTORY TOUR The Clive Cams Factory Tour was a well attended event, with a great overview of the factory provided by Clive. While everyone knows what a cam is, and figures big lumpy bits on a stick has to be better than small lumpy bits on a stick, the science behind creating lobe profiles for different applications has progressed far beyond big is better. Royce Merlins used in tractor pulls; plus there is the work he does on camshaft reconditioning for vintage and veteran cars, and the transport industry diesels. Thanks Clive for a very informative morning, it was very much appreciated. The Ed. Clive explaining the theory of cam design to the tourists Clive s history places him in a special place in Australian motorsport, and not just circuit racing there is a wide range of competition engines he has been involved in, including the awesome big BIG blocks no, not car based, think Rolls- Yes, Cams come in all sizes. Some have more lobes than others! Bruce presented a club tee shirt to Clive at the end of the visit thanks again Clive. Left yes, that s a normal persons foot. And some big cams.
