How about we get a few articles and photos sent in by members editor@pakenhamautoclub.org.au is the place to send them. 2 A Few Words Next month Leon will be producing a brief OilRag as I will be somewhere in the north of the continent, travelling with the 60 th Anniversary Redex Rerun being run by the Peugeot Car Club. Organising this event has kept me busy for the last few weeks so I m looking at the event itself as a holiday! Nick From Nick Wright Editor

5 Sunday 26 May Pakenham Motorkhana Are you a silent PAC member? Would you like to be a bit more adventuresome in your car? Have your kids or grand children started driving yet? Well this event is especially for you. This is probably the last event at Pakenham before the winter rains set in, so don t miss it. Low key Motorsport. You only need a CAMS Non-Speed licence. If you are between 12 and 18 you qualify for a junior CAMS licence. PAC club cars are available for hire for juniors at only $10 for the day. This is a Group 5 event, but is exactly the same as the Pakenham club motorkhana, except for the venue. This event will be at Sandown, same venue as the VMC on 12 th May. Sunday 23 rd June PCCV VMC Put this date in your calendar. Round 5 of the Victorian Motorkhana Championship. Last year PCCV ran their event in the car park at the Cardinia Shire Offices. It was a great event but quite a challenge to fit it on such a restricted area. This year they are looking for a friendlier to use area, probably at Sandown raceway. More information next month. Glad Phillip Island Six-Hour Relay 3/4 August 2013 The Phillip Island Six-Hour Relay is on again this year over the weekend of 3-4 August. PAC is intending to enter a team. Expressions of interest are sought from intending team members. Please speed@pakenhamautoclub.org.au if you would like to participate. Entries will open very soon and the field fills within days, so we need to be ready to put the club entry in. Your entry must be accompanied by your share of the entry fee. 5

6 23 24 March Marysville Marathon Congratulations to PAC members who participated in the 2013 Marysville Stages Marathon, which was, as the name implies, a marathon event. It was fully route charted rally with a competitive distance of approximately 380 km and was run in three divisions. Nick Wright had the unenviable task of scoring the event. The first division, the 2013 Escort Memorial Rally, was approximately 100 km daylight on Saturday. Graeme Hurle and Elizabeth Kidgell entered this division, unfortunately their Ford Escort s diff seized on the last transport section when they were in 6 th position. The second division, the 2013 Marysville Stages, Round One of the 2013 Victorian Club Rally Series, was approximately 120 km competitive distance. It ran on Saturday night and early Sunday morning, Graham Wallis and Richard Davies finished 7 th in class in a Peugeot 505. Novice competitors Daniel Unternahrer and Jodie Finnegan entered in a Commodore and were non-finishers. The second division included an option for new competitors, the Camcrusher Introductory Trial, which was a 70 km mapped trial. No PAC members chose that option. The third division, the 2013 Anglia Memorial Rally, was fully route charted 85 km daylight competitive on Sunday. PAC member Nathan Berry navigated for Rian Calder in a Ford Escort with good results, 2 nd in Class and 4 th outright. Blue Rock Stages The PAC round of the VCRS has been run and won, but no member has sent an article or photo. Just as well that John Doutch was there to record the event on film. After all the hard work by the directing team and officials, it would be good to hear from a competitor who enjoyed the event! Rally Reports from Glad Fish Graham Wallis in his Peugeot 505 managed 1 st in grade and 5 th outright for the complete Marathon. Well done Graham. Daniel Unternahrer and Jodie Finnegan were 3 rd in grade in the Marathon. 6 April Trailblazer TRE Five PAC members bravely tackled the HRA Trailblazer, a 140km navigational challenge in the Heathcote forest on 6 th April. First outright was Kim Harper and Steuart Snooks in a Ford Escort Mk1. Starting first on the road gave them an advantage of a dust free run, and they only missed 3 information boards. Ray Garrad with Brian Ward navigating in a Peugeot 505, were 7 th. Although they only missed two information boards, they lost time finding boards. Alan Upton with Mark Laidlay competed in a Datsun They missed 5 information boards and were out of late running time at one major control. The first all PAC crew of Nick Wright and Mitch Garrad in a Peugeot 505Gti were also out of late time at one major control, had a wrong direction and missed several information boards, but still managed to finish in the top 10 places. Graham Wallis had mechanical problems that put him out of the event on the first stage. Congratulations to all PAC members who were brave enough to even attempt this event. 7 P.A.C. Tour De Gippsland May For those interested in coming along for the weekend here are some brief details of the places of interest we will visit. I m sure we will find a lot more of interest as we meander through the scenic countryside of South Gippsland. Port Albert is one of Victoria s oldest sea ports, established in 1841 by explorer Angus McMillan, who is commemorated with a monument at the roundabout at the northern end of town. The town s collection of historical buildings includes the Port Albert Hotel (licensed in 1842) which fronts the town s jetties and wharf, and the general store which dates back to The Gippsland Regional Museum, located on the corner of Wharf Street and Bay Street, features exhibitions and memorabilia of the town s maritime history. The township of Maffra is situated on the banks of the Macalister River, 18km north of the city of Sale in central Gippsland, Victoria. It currently has a population of some The first Europeans known to have reached this part of Gippsland appeared in January 1840 when Angus McMillan s party reached (and named) the Macalister River downstream from the current town site. The original Mafra (with one -f-) was a sheep fold located on this run several kilometres south east of the present town of Newry; it has the same name as one of Macalister s properties in NSW, which was in turn named after a town in Portugal. The former police reserve was surveyed as a town in 1863 by George Hastings. Taking the name from the original sheep fold and anglicising by adding an extra f. Hastings applied Maffra to both the town and surrounding parish. The town was gazetted in 1864 and the first town lot sales took place. The 1870s and early 1880s saw the start of a boom period for the town. The town became the centre of the Shire of Maffra, proclaimed on 14 th October 1875, and the first municipal offices were constructed. By 1880 there were said to be 3000 people living in the shire. Itinerary The railway from Melbourne reached Maffra in 1886 and reached Briagolong in 1889; this expansion created increased financial opportunities for the district. Linked now with Traralgon (and therefore Melbourne), Stratford and Briagolong, Maffra was in an ideal position to become the hub of a thriving cattle industry. In the late 1890 s a Sugar Beet industry was established with the building of the factory and the Colony s first 500 tons of sugar was refined in 1898.The industry, originally in private hands and later taken over by the Victorian Government, lasted until Maffra today survives thanks mainly to dairying and vegetable growing. A major Murray Goulburn factory processes millions of litres of milk a week at peak times, mostly for export. Southern Rural Water has its headquarters there. Several rural supply companies have erected state-of-the-art distribution centres. The DNRE has regional offices there. A major veterinary clinic has teaching connections with Melbourne University. There s a Herd Improvement Co-operative and a research farm nearby. The town also boasts one of rural Victoria s largest single-campus Government secondary colleges. Walhalla is nestled in a steep sided valley where electricity was only connected in It was once one of Australia s richest gold towns. Almost 4500 people lived and worked in the area at its peak during the 1800s. Take a tour of the Long Tunnel Extended Gold Mine, visit the museum, join the ghost tour (you need to book) or take a ride on the Goldfields Railway. For those feeling fit, take a scenic walk and include the half hour climb to what s claimed as the most remarkable cricket ground in the world. Because of the lack of flat ground in the town, the miners removed the top off a mountain with picks and shovels! Maybe just a stroll to the Fire Station, Spetts Cottage, Windsor House, Gold Vault, Stone Cottage, Band Rotunda, Cemetery, Masonic Lodge No 69, Old Bakery or St. John s Church of England. We have booked into the Rawson caravan park/motel for the night.
