The police officers who attend will discuss their role in our community, they may even breathalyse us! They will answer any questions, particularly in relation to Road Traffic. This is an opportunity for all of us, especially junior members, to meet members of our local police force and to better understand what they do for us. We will finish up with supper. Visitors welcome. 4 Editorial 4 A Few Words From Nick Wright Editor I have been working on improvements to the club membership database program. This means that we can now include details of the date your membership is due to be renewed when we send out copies of the OilRag. Hopefully this will reduce the number of members who become unfinancial simply because they don t realise their membership was due! We also have the facility to send reminder letters to those who get a snail-mail OilRag. I just have to coordinate this aspect with Hilly who does the printing and posting. I d like to welcome Rob Sanderson to the Committee Rob joined in time for our last meeting. My latest competition event, the Goldfields Rally (based in Dunolly) was quite successful in that I finished up as the leading HRA Standard Car Class (SCC) competitor. Mitch, my usual navigator, was away in Perth playing floorball, so I had a new navigator for the event. PAC member Shane had only done one event before (actually only half an event after a car breakdown). He kept me on the right road all night and I kept the car on the road for most of the night we did have a good laugh when I managed to drive round the wrong side of the same tree on the second run through one stage. It was bitterly cold and we had left spare wheels outside at rally HQ/service park; as we drove in at the end, we found they d turned into an igloo! At least 3mm of ice completely covered all exposed sides. We finished in the top ten out of 24 starters which included some pretty fast machinery at least one VRC-competitive WRX and several other 4WD turbo rally cars as well. This result took me back to the top of the SCC series points for the year to date. Motorkhana/Khanacross There were many PAC members (and several exmembers) competing in the Goldfields with varied results (PAC people in Small Caps): Crew O/R Grade Class SCC Graham Wallis/Phil Nicholas 4 1 D 2 C - Nick Wright/Shane Walters 10 2 E 1 D 1 D McCready/Stuchberry 17 7 E 5 D - Day/Kidgell DNF Musgrave/Ahern 8 4 F 4 C - Next SCC event will be an autocross at Avalon; it is on the same day as I am already committed to a VMC event as scorer. Ray and Shane will compete in the autocross to try to take some points away from the other competitors for me! The SCC rules are in a state of flux, but I believe that the scoring system will allow each competitor to drop their worst round or two so I hope to be in good shape at the end of the year. Have you joined pacautoclub@yahoogroups.com yet? This is the PAC egroup where members share views and get information and last minute updates on events. Please send your articles, photos, etc. to editor@pakenhamautoclub.org.au for inclusion in the next issue of OilRag. from Glad Fish Non-Speed Co-ordinator June and July have been quiet months at the McGregor Road Complex due to rain making the grounds too wet for competition. Recent Events Sunday 6 July G5 Motorkhana North Altona Group 5 Motorkhana held by Ford Four Car Club (FFCC) and Toyota Car Club Australia (TCCA) on bitumen at Toyota Australia car park off Grieves Road, North Altona. 5 Non-Speed News Motorkhana/Khanacross continued from page 4 Altona G5 Motorkhana CoC s View On July 6 I ran a G5 motorkhana for FFCC/TCCA at a new venue in Melbourne. With Toyota Australia s support we ran our first real motorkhana in their Altona car park. When I say a real motorkhana, we did a demonstration motorkhana at their Ekinden family day a few months ago where we took Toyota workers and family members for demonstration rides. During the day we signed up over 145 passengers and most had multiple rides. Anyway July 6 started early for me having to pick up 4 of my FFCC scout junior drivers on the way to the event after packing the car and all the gear required to run the motorkhana the night before (200 witches hats, 150 poles, 150 flags, paperwork, chairs tables etc. etc.). Being restricted on the time we could access the venue, I had prearranged more than is normal at a G5. I had already contacted and allocated officials and everyone knew what they had to do even before they got there. We even booked in these officials (who were also competitors) and scrutinised their cars, on the trailers, in the business car park opposite, to save time. As soon as the gate opened at 8:40am we were in and with everyone doing their job magnificently we were fully ready to rock by 9:15am. By the time of the drivers briefing we had 71 entries in total with all cars scrutinised and ready to go. Due to the huge field (probably the biggest bar the HAC Interclub motorkhana in over 10 years) and only 2 test fields, I ran through the day without lunch breaks. Normally a rule of thumb is around cars per test area, so we were going to struggle, but by the end of the day we had got all competitors through 8 tests and were packed up in time to have the venue cleared by the 4pm deadline. We ran a few normal tests throughout the day, but as the Altona venue is long and a little narrow, we specifically designed some new tests to keep people well away from the kerbs and light poles at the field boundaries. The custom tests were designed to be similar to normal tests, but follow a pattern and be smooth and flowing, mixing a little speed and some tight bits to provide a few new challenges for the regular motorkhana competitors. Cars on the day ranged from my scouts and I in the Fester (Festiva!) to Toyota 86s (both new and old) and MX5s in abundance. As director my objectives were well and truly achieved, with Toyota more than happy with us, all competitors with huge grins on their faces, and another new venue bedded in. A big thank you to both Tamara (TCCA) who as my former co-director came out and ran the book-in table with our squad of volunteers, and then Bob (MX5) who took over when Tamara had to leave for work mid-morning. As per any event run by any club it is the volunteers who run these events for us, and we can never thank them enough. One new TCCA volunteer who timed for us all day was trying to work out what car he could use at the next G5 motorkhana as he had never even been to a motorkhana and he enjoyed the passenger rides he scored at the end of the day. I am more than happy to say that my biggest issue all day was trying to find Fester to have my next run. With 70 odd cars parked in the pits, and my scouts always running after me, I could never find where they parked the damn car after their run! The next G5 motorkhana is to be run by NCCA at another new venue at Laverton on 10 August (Sup Regs are available). Laverton is slightly different in that it is concrete, and opposite to Altona in that its two test areas will be shorter and squatter. I am again codirecting, this time with Stuart as the main director and we have devised some tests to suit the test area which should be a bit more fun. Hope to see you there. Nicholas Charrett (PAC motorkhanaerer) Sunday 13 July PAC Khanacross Unfortunately this multiclub Khanacross was cancelled due to the wetness of the grounds. Saturday 19 July VMC 6 Bendigo This was a Saturday event, on a sealed surface, at the Bendigo Livestock Exchange. This venue is only available on Saturdays, which unfortunately does not suit some of us. However nine PAC members competed, maybe one of these competitors will write an article next time they compete, just to let the rest of us know about the fun they are having. Here are their results in class, listed in outright finishing order. 7 Tarsem Singh, representing the club-plate members in his Humber Hawk and Nick and I driving my Peugeot 308, participated in the Fiat Car Club EcoDrive. We were disappointed that there were not more of our Permit Scheme members participating, however it was their loss. It was a great event, starting in the comfort of the BP Officer Outbound Service Station on the Pakenham by-pass road. The finish location was at La Porchetta Pakenham for lunch, and a delicious lunch it was too. Team Freame, (several of whom competed at our last event at McGregor Road) ran a very efficient event. We were given clear, written instructions to follow, with a Melways reference for every turn to be made. It would be very difficult to get lost. The chosen route was most enjoyable, Other than Non-Speed News Sunday 27 July Fiat Car Club EcoDrive HRA Powerplay Rally Sprint There were nine PAC competitors in this event. Alan Upton and Mitch Garrad in a Datsun Bluebird won their Class. Shannon Fitcher in a Datsun 1600 was first in Grade. Anthony Alexander and David Everingham in a Hyundai Excel were third in Grade, Peter Morrison and Sue Wasson also in a Hyundai Excel were fifth in Grade. Graham Wallis in a Peugeot 205 was seventh in Grade. Unfortunately Eli Evans did not finish due to mechanical problems. we went through some heavy forested area, some open grazing areas, and some small villages. The roads were all sealed, some narrow country roads and some wider. There were enough hills to make fuel economy a challenge. We were deemed the fourth most economical participant (out of 27) while Tarsem was one of three who chose not to measure their economy but just enjoyed the drive. Glad Forest Rallies Continue during Winter Nissan Night Moves Tim Stuchbery and Sue McCready performed well in a Ford Falcon. Goldfields Introductory Trial Best PAC competitor was Graham Wallis, fourth outright. Nick Wright changed seats and drove the event with a new navigator, Shane Walters; they finished first in class. Tim Stuchbery and Sue McCready also swapped seats to qualify as novices, finishing fifth in class. Glad Goldfields Introductory Trial from Glad Fish from Glad Fish An extremely useful (Not!) signpost discovered in NZ an easy way to get lost on a rally First of all I would like to thank Nick Wright for giving me the opportunity to navigate for him in this event. This was my second attempt at navigating in a rally and I am happy to say we finished in one piece. I made a few minor distance errors and we overshot a few corners but thanks to Nick s experience we got back on the right track without losing too much time. It was a great night and a lot of fun. As someone who would rather be in the driver s seat for an event like this, I would have to say that I learnt a lot more about what is involved in rally from being a navigator and I know it will help when I compete as a driver next year. I recommend to anyone who wants to get involved in rally events to have a go at navigating. I m looking forward to my next event as a navigator later in the year. Shane Walters 7

Now in its third year, Drive for Life raises funds for suicide prevention education in Melbourne and regional Victoria. Our aim this year is to fill the field of 50 cars and raise $5,000 to directly fund a series of workshops for families to be conducted over the next six months. Anyone with a passion for motoring can enter. All that is required is for the vehicle to be road registered or club scheme permit, a current driver s license and a navigator/observer who can follow a set of route instructions. (You can even bring passengers to help with observation clues). Drive for Life is not a speed event as it is run on public roads. No special licensing is necessary and all road rules must be followed. This year the event becomes an official round of the Historic Rally Association s Touring Championship which will see some of the state s top historic rally navigators and drivers keen to score points on the day. These drivers need a CAMS competition licence to compete in the championship. The event will be run in two Divisions: Division 1 HRA Touring Series Championship. Division 2 - Social Tour. Drive for Life will start from Westerfolds Park, Templestowe and tour through sections of the Yarra Valley, ending in a lunch and charity auction. Event and entry details are available online at Drive for Life is a joint initiative of the Drive for Life Suicide Prevention Association and the Historic Rally Association. 8
