1 THSBCA PLAY- BALL NOVEMBER, 2013 Volume 4, Issue 3 The official voice of the TEXAS HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL COACHES ASSOCIATION Special Interest Articles WACO CONVENTION UIL UPDATE NEWS: PRESIDENT LETTER 2014 POLLS WELCOME TO THE 16th ISSUE OF THSBCA PLAY BALL In BRIEF WACO HOTEL INFO HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES CONVENTION AGENDA ALL STAR COACHES FOR 2014 BASEBALL STORIES RETIRED COACHES AGENDA This will be the 43rd consecutive convention and clinic held in Waco and promises to be one of the best yet. The dates are January 9-11, If you have not registered, please do so as soon as possible. Membership forms are on our website: Superintendents and the UIL, met the weekend of October 20-21st to make changes for the school year. There were few actual changes concerning baseball. The main item was concerning the subject of coaching play. A committee is being formed to study the matter and report back to the Legislative Council. The THSBCA is conducting a poll to see what our baseball coaches would like to see done. Look for an blast to be sent ASAP. Please fill out the poll and send it in. A tentative itinerary can be found on page 6 of this Newsletter. UIL CHANGES The Legislative Council composed of during the summer months. The consensus was that there is certainly a problem with the status quo, paying to At the Waco convention we have a speaker from the American Legion who will speak on what the Legion can do for high school baseball coaches to help with summer baseball. Texas High School Baseball Coaches, As we approach the tail end of the first semester of the school year, we must take time to prepare for our annual clinic and convention in Waco January 9-11, Please be proactive with the registration process! Head coaches I encourage you to remind and guide your assistant coaches through completion of the registration process. Mario Barrett continues to work tirelessly once again with registration and would greatly appreciate our coaches attention to this matter sooner rather than later. Forms sent by the December 7th deadline will qualify for the $65 early registration rate, and those after that date will pay an $80 registration fee. All coaches who register prior to the December 7th deadline will have their information included in the 2014 THSBCA Coaches Directory.

2 Our staff is working hard to prepare for the coming convention, especially Jon Rustenhaven (speakers) and Armando Sedeno (vendors) Hall of Fame inductees and our schedule of speakers will be released very soon. We are excited about preparations for Waco as this year's clinic and convention looks to be an incredible event! Please remember to support our official THSBCA sponsors and retail dealers as you make purchases to prepare for the coming season! Please look for a couple of items to come your way via blast from Rex Sanders. We really need to you participate in a survey we've been working on to evaluate how our membership feels about coaching summer baseball. The UIL is starting to consider possibilities regarding policy changes having to do with school coaches working with their athletes during summer months. We hope to appropriately represent our membership during this process so we need to hear back from everyone when this survey comes out. Finally, you will see a request for information regarding polls for the coming season. Please take the time to fill out and provide information in that regard so we can get a great start on this year's polls. Look forward to seeing everyone in Waco! 4 How to Throw the Wet One BASEBALL STORIES The players in the later 60 s were not too different than the players today. They were always looking for an edge. Some would shave their bat on a wood plane to make the round bat square thus easier to square one up. Corking the bat was sometimes used to help the hitter. Bob hated hitters and thought that these attempts to hit pitchers were horrible attempts to gain an advantage over the poor defenseless pitchers. Pitchers were 60 6 from the plate and had to throw this ball over a 17 plate. Their throws were called by men that could not hit during their time and were partial to the hitters. Bob used his fastball and breaking ball plus the ole wet one to solve these problems. The spitter was thrown like you would squeeze a water melon seed and the results were a pitch that was there and then disappeared and dropped like a rock in the zone. The catcher had to catch it wipe the dew off and throw it back to the pitcher in a hurry. Howell Martin was the catcher and his uniform looked as though he had been walking behind a horse eating bran. If this term is not common to you see Google and it may not be there either. Bob could throw the wet one on any count and a good example was the following... We were playing in the Missouri Valley Conference semi-final game against John Brown University coached by the ex. Major Leaguer Wally Moon. It was the bottom of the ninth with WT up one run. The bases were loaded and no outs when Coach Sloan asked for Bob to enter the game. Bobs uniform was soaked with sweat which made the loading process easier. He threw his warm-up pitches and Howell came to the mound and said skip said to throw 9 wet ones and we would win this. Bob replied No sweat. Is this an oxymoron? The first hitter got 3 wet ones and the results was one out. The second hitter got 3 more and out number two. Coach Moon began yelling at the umpire get the tarp, it is raining out there. The umpire asked for the ball and Howell threw the ball to third instead and the ball landed in left field, by then the dew was gone. Bob then threw the last 3 wet ones that appeared to be thrown for a water cannon for out number 3. The quote in the paper the next day was Bob Sine struck out side for a WT win using a diving fastball that appeared at times to look like a water bug on a lake. 6 RETIRED COACHES NEWS I hope this finds everyone in good health and fine spirits. The World Series is in full swing and I hope your team wins. Name the man who was a good friend of THCBCA that gave tickets to the World Series to the members of the THSBCA each year and that person could go as a guest with him and his wife to Series? The answer Mr. Olson, I never knew his first name as that was what people called him. He was an A&M alumnus who made it good in business but liked the THSBCA. I hope you can make plans to attend the Waco Convention January We have a 4 person coach s panel on the agenda, Saturday at 11:00 AM. This group will answer a variety of questions dealing with fact and fiction of events at the convention in the past. There will be stories and demonstrations of turning two with a spit cup and a pillow, so plan to attend. Have some questions for these coaches. This year s panel members are Floyd Ciruti and Dick Janse from the South and Ronnie Clanton and Benny Jones from the North. The dues this year is $20.00 and the plan is to place this money into a scholarship fund to be presented at the Hall of Fame Banquet in the name of the Retired Coaches. We need $ to make this happen. We need 80 members to ensure this. Send your dues to Mario or bring them to the meeting. Below is a tentative agenda: We need everyone to attend to make these elections great. Persons elected must be a member of the retired coaches association so encourage membership. 1. Vote for 5 & 4 All-Star Coaches 2. Vote for 3,2and1 All- Star Coaches 3.
