3 news & notes sun belt conference baseball weekly release THE CYCLE Troy s Miles Hoyle hit for the cycle for the Trojans on Saturday as he went 4-for-6 against Memphis. It is the first cycle in recent memory for the Trojans according to former coach Chase Riddle and former broadcaster Ralph Black. The cycle by Hoyle was not the only bit of history for the Trojans this week, as they recorded a triple play against Kennesaw State in a 15-5 victory on Tuesday afternoon; in their only mid-week game this week. FIU s EBERT HONORED Junior transfer Tom Ebert was named one of Recruiting Closer s Pitchers of the Week, it was announced Monday. Ebert, who made his debut as a Golden Panther on Saturday night vs. Jacksonville, gave FIU a stellar performance on the mound, tossing 6.2 innings of two-hit ball. The 6-6 righty struck out nine batters and walked none. FIU went on to win the game Of the 84 pitches Ebert threw on Saturday, 62 of them were strikes. Ebert was one of 12 pitchers selected by RecruitingCloser.com. The list was headlined by Kansas Shaffer Hall, who struck out seven batters in a no-hitter against Air Force. WATCH WARD, STORM ULM closer Derek Ward and Troy s Josh Storm have been named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Watch List. The SBC due are two of 40 pitchers on the preseason list. PRESEASON ALL-AMERICANS WKU s Chad Cregar and ULM s Ben Soignier were named National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) pre-2009 All-Americans, as announced by the organization. Cregar, a desiginated hitter for the Hilltoppers, was a first-team selection and Soignier, the Warhawks second baseman, earned third team recognition. SEVEN NAMED TO BROOKS WALLACE WATCH LIST Seven Sun Belt Conference baseball standouts have been named to the Preseason 2009 Brooks Wallace Player of the Year Watch List, as recently announced by The College Baseball Foundation. Ryan Mollica (FIU), Ben Soigner (ULM), Bryce Brentz (MT), Rawley Bishop (MT), John Storm (Troy), Chad Cregar (WKU) and Matt Ridings (WKU) are among those listed as the top players in the country. The Wallace Award is dedicated to the memory of former Texas Tech player and assistant coach Brooks Wallace. Wallace was a slick-fielding shortstop at Texas Tech from 1977 to A four-year starter, he was named All-Southwest Conference and All-District his senior year. He led the Red Raiders to their first-ever appearance in the Southwest Conference Tournament in PING!BASEBALL For the third-straight year, Ping!Baseball selected several Sun Belt Conference players for its all-preseason team, including Ben Soignier (ULM), Bryce Brentz (MT), Rawley Bishop (MT), Chad Cregar (WKU) and Matt Ridings (WKU). THREE TIMES A CHARM After leading the nation in runs per game last year and being selected in the 17th round in the 2008 MLB Draft, ULM s Ben Soignier opted to return to Monroe for his season in hopes of becoming the first three-time All-American in the program s storied history. In addition to Soignier s individual title, the Warhawks were the NCAA statistical champion in double plays turned per game averaging 1.29 a contest during their run to the Sun Belt Conference championship. ULM finished the season second in the nation with a school record 75 double plays turned trailing national champion Fresno State by just one, despite the Bulldogs playing 20 more games than the Warhawks NEW FACES During the off-season, several coaching changes took place, including UALR s hiring of veteran winner Scott Norwood. Norwood makes his way to Little Rock after spending the past four seasons at Ouachita Baptist, where he went the last two years and led the Tigers to a runner-up finish at the 2008 NCAA Division II World Series. Norwood led the Tigers all the way to the National Championship game in 2008, where they came up just short in a 6-2 loss to Mount Olive College. OBU ended the year with a record and a No. 2 national ranking, earning Norwood South Central Region Coach of the Year honors from the American Baseball Coaches Association. Arkansas State also brought on a new skipper, as Tommy Raffo Raffo became the fifth head coach in the history of the ASU baseball program. Raffo takes the reins after serving as an assistant coach at SEC member Mississippi State for the past 15 years. During his time at Mississippi State, he served as the hitting and outfield coach for a Bulldog program that made three trips to the College World Series. Under his direction, the Bulldogs posted a team batting average of.300 or better in eight of the past 11 seasons. FAU will be without the leadership of long-time head coach Kevin Cooney, who after 21 years decided to retire at the conclusion of the 2008 campaign. The Owls did not have to look far to replace Cooney, however, Director of Athletics Craig Angelos immediately hired Cooney s veteran assistant John McCormack. McCormack has been with FAU for 18 seasons, serving as the recruiting coordinator the last 16 seasons and as the associate head coach/recruiting coordinator the last 10 seasons. During that time span, 73 players have continued their baseball careers as professionals, seven earned All-America honors, six have been named Freshmen All-American and three were conference Player of the Year selections. The program has also won 658 games, appeared in seven regional tournaments, captured a Regional Tournament Title in 2002 and advanced to the Super Regional TOURNAMENT Troy will host the 2009 Sun Belt Conference Tournament this year, which is set to take place May at the Trojans newly renovated baseball facility - The Lott Baseball Complex at Riddle-Pace Field, now a state of the art baseball complex that rivals any in the nation. The new addition to the complex features indoor batting cages, new locker rooms for the players and umpires as well as a player lounge and meeting area. The facility provides new offices for the Troy coaching staff. Riddle Pace field boasts a capacity of 2,000 and measures 340 feet in left, 375 feet in left center, 400 feet up the middle, 350 feet in right center and 310 feet in right field.

The former JUCO All-American tossed a complete game, 3-hit performance. The junior transfer allowed just two runs and struck out six as he picked up his first collegiate win. Despite losing game two, FIU got a very good starting performance from another newcomer. Freshman R.J. Fondon pitched five innings, striking out seven hitters before giving way to his bullpen.
