Jimmy Nelson pitches seven shutout innings in Brewers victory By Todd Rosiak / Milwaukee Journal Sentinel July 25, 2015 Phoenix Jimmy Nelson's personal surge continued on Friday night. The big right-hander threw seven shutout innings and got just enough offense behind him to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a 2-1 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field. Nelson allowed five hits and three walks while striking out five to win for the fifth time in six starts and improve to 8-9. With Mike Fiers and Taylor Jungmann also pitching well, and Wily Peralta poised to come off the disabled list sometime in the near future, the Brewers have to like what they've been seeing from their young starters of late. "I think he's in a pretty good groove," Counsell said of Nelson. "He got himself into a little trouble in the first inning, but he also did a great job of getting himself out of trouble in the first inning. And after that he was just really good the rest of the way. "He's been pretty good for a while now. He's put together a pretty good run of quality starts here." Ryan Braun put the Brewers ahead with a solo home run to lead off the sixth inning, his second round-tripper in as many nights. Braun swung at Corbin's first offering, a 92-mph fastball, and deposited it into the stands in right to break up a scoreless tie. "You try to be prepared for every pitch," said Braun. "Sometimes it's the first pitch of an at-bat that's the best pitch to hit; sometimes it might be the fifth or sixth. But a guy of that caliber, as good as he is, I don't think you have the luxury of giving him strikes, so I always try to be prepared for everything. The homer was Braun's 18th of the season. He hit a career-low 19 all of last season while dealing with his troublesome right thumb. Milwaukee picked up what proved to be a huge insurance run in the ninth. Gerardo Parra collected a pinch-hit single, moved to second on a Hernan Perez bunt and then to third on a groundout by Scooter Gennett before scoring on a wild pitch by Brad Ziegler. "Those add-on runs always give Frankie a little bit of room for error," Counsell said. The Diamondbacks made things interesting in the bottom of the ninth against Francisco Rodriguez. Chris Owings led off with a triple to right-center. After Jake Lamb struck out, Owings tagged and scored on a fly ball to center from Nick Ahmed. Pinch-hitter Welington Castillo then hit a tough one-hopper to Jean Segura, who picked it and threw over to first to seal the victory. "Somebody squared up a ball against him. I know it's kind of a news story," quipped Counsell. "He pitched a good inning. He did his job." Rodriguez has converted 22 of 22 save opportunities this season and 27 straight dating to last season.

The first inning has been a tough one for Nelson to navigate, and that trend continued, as Ender Inciarte doubled to lead off and after an A.J. Pollock strikeout Paul Goldschmidt drew a nine-pitch walk. Nelson didn't cave, though. He recovered to strike out David Peralta and Owings, keeping the Diamondbacks off the board. He needed 31 pitches to get out of that inning and then threw just seven to retire Arizona in the second before running into more trouble in the third. With one out, Inciarte and Pollock singled consecutively, bringing Goldschmidt to the plate. In the midst of his at-bat, Inciarte and Pollock pulled off a double steal, allowing the Brewers to intentionally walk the slugger and face Peralta. That bit of strategy worked out perfectly, as Peralta grounded into an inning-ending double play as Nelson again averted a potential big inning. A double play also helped Nelson face the minimum in the fifth. "It wasn't like I was tired or taxed or anything," Nelson said. "Just try to keep executing pitches." The Brewers had some early success against Nelson's counterpart, left-hander Patrick Corbin, but couldn't string anything together as baserunners in each of the first five innings including a Perez double in the second went for naught. After Braun's homer, Corbin bounced back by making quick work of Carlos Gomez, Adam Lind and Khris Davis. He finished the seventh by striking out Hector Gomez and Nelson to reach a career-high-tying 10. The seven innings were also a season high for Corbin (1-3), who made just his fourth start for the Diamondbacks after returning from 2014 Tommy John surgery. He allowed four hits and one walk over an economical 89 pitches. "It's good stuff," said Braun, who's never faced Corbin previously. "Obviously before he got hurt he was an acetype pitcher, and it looks like his stuff is right back to where it was. "Really good velocity. Explosive fastball, both sides of the plate, great slider and effective changeup when he needs to throw it, too. You figure it out right away...that his stuff is good." Nelson worked around a two-out single to also finish the seventh. "It was a well-pitched game. Corbin pitched a very good game as well," said Counsell. "It kind of had the feeling after about the third that it was going to be tough to score. One run was going to be a big run, and it turned out to be." Nelson, who opened the season 2-6, said the key to his resurgence has been keeping things simple. "Not trying to do too much, not trying to go out there and just paint corners and strike everybody out," he said. "Just throwing to my strengths and letting the defense work, really." The Brewers got two on with two outs against Diamondbacks reliever Daniel Hudson in the eighth before Lind chopped out against Oliver Perez.

Jeremy Jeffress allowed a leadoff single in the eighth but got a double play. After Jeffress gave up a single to Goldschmidt, Will Smith came on to strike out pinch-hitter Yasmany Tomas looking on a full count. Diamondbacks Paul Goldschmidt merits Craig Counsell s respect By Todd Rosiak / Milwaukee Journal Sentinel July 24, 2015 Phoenix As much as it pained him to do so, Milwaukee Brewers manager Craig Counsell on Thursday night called for an intentional walk of Arizona Diamondbacks slugger Paul Goldschmidt with a runner on second base and his team trailing by a run in the third inning. Such is the success the all-star first baseman has had against the Brewers not only this season, but over the course of his career. "He's been a challenge for us," said Counsell of Goldschmidt, who entered Friday's game leading the National League with a.344 average, 73 runs batted in and 75 walks. "You have to make pitches on him. He's not unlike Bryce Harper. I think those are the two guys in the National League, for me, who really stand out this year as guys you just have to be careful of. "I don't like walking guys intentionally in the third inning. I really don't like doing that. But a player earns that." Coming into Friday, Goldschmidt was hitting.625 with a.696 on-base percentage and an otherworldly OPS in four games this season against Milwaukee. He went 1 for 2 with a double and two walks in Arizona's 8-3 victory on Thursday. His numbers are just as absurd over the course of his career against the Brewers. In 23 games entering Friday, he was hitting.430 with a.515 on-base percentage and an OPS of Throw in eight homers, 21 RBI and 16 walks, and Goldschmidt has been about as impossible an out as there is for Milwaukee. "I mean, he obviously beats a lot of people," catcher Jonathan Lucroy said. "He's super-, super-talented, a guy you have to be really careful with. Like you saw in the third inning yesterday when we walked him. We're not going to let that guy beat us. He's one of the better hitters in baseball." Lucroy, who compared Goldschmidt to Albert Pujols in his prime with the St. Louis Cardinals, was asked if there is any way to effectively pitch him and get him out. "No, I think that guy has everything covered," he said. "You have to execute and keep the ball down and allow the pitcher's stuff to get him out. A guy like that, he doesn't chase very often. You have to get ahead of him and you have to keep the ball down even though he can still hit that. "Hopefully he'll roll over it or mis-hit it." Counsell agreed the key is execution against dangerous hitters like Goldschmidt. "I think there's spots to pitch everybody. But it's how big the spot is," he said. "Everybody has holes. The great hitters, their holes are really small and you've got to be really perfect."

Remember me? Hector Gomez started at second base on Friday, marking the first time he received such an opportunity since June 15. "I saw the lineup and said, 'Thank God,'" he said with a hearty laugh. "I'm going to keep the lineup card. I'm going to take it with me." Playing time has been so scarce for the 27-year-old utility man that Gomez had accrued nine at-bats since June 15, when he started at shortstop against the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium. Counsell, a utility man for much of his major-league career, understands what Gomez has been going through while waiting to play. "It's tough," he acknowledged. "I tried to get him an at-bat last night to quite honestly just give him something to go into tonight with. It's how it works when you're in that role. He got quite a few at-bats the first six weeks of the season. "That's part of being a big-leaguer. It's a challenging role, there's no question about it." Gomez, who was hitting.198 with one homer and seven RBI in 59 games (26 starts), bided his time by being productive with his pregame work and trying to be as prepared as possible whenever called upon as a pinchhitter. That's no easy task when many of the relievers he would face were throwing in the high 90s with nasty breaking stuff. "I was ready the whole time," he said. "I know what position the Brewers are in right now. They have to make decisions. I was ready. I'm not frustrated or nothing like that. "I worked every single day, got ready to play every single day." Although his right-handed bat was a nice fit against Arizona left-hander Patrick Corbin, Gomez figures to see more opportunities to play after the Brewers traded Aramis Ramirez to Pittsburgh on Thursday. "This is my opportunity, and I'm going to enjoy it," he said. "Play the game. No pressure. What happens, happens." Brewers at Diamondbacks: Friday game report By Todd Rosiak / Milwaukee Journal Sentinel July 25, 2015 BEHIND THE BOX SCORE Gerardo Parra was out of the lineup Friday, one night after being drilled by a pitch in the right kneecap. But it was due to the Diamondbacks starting a left-hander, Patrick Corbin, and not due to any negative lingering aftereffects. "Gerardo's a tough guy," manager Craig Counsell said. Said Parra: "I feel good. I'm 100%. Just a little inflammation, but nothing bad." Jonathan Lucroy was especially shaken by the news of the shooting in which three people died and nine were injured Thursday night in Lafayette, La. The catcher maintains his off-season residence there, a five-minute drive from the theater in which he shooting took place.

"You never think it could happen where you live," he said. "Where I live, it's tight-knit. Everybody knows everybody. It's just crazy." Wily Peralta (left oblique) threw a bullpen session before Friday's game, but Counsell said he was no closer to having a definitive time to slot him back into the Brewers' rotation. With the trading deadline a week away, it's likely the Brewers are biding their time while gauging the market for potential deals involving some of their other starters. "He's not going to have another rehab start, I don't believe," he said. "We're going to wait a little while to decide (what to do)." STATITUDES With a three-run home run in the ninth inning Thursday and his solo shot Friday, Ryan Braun has moved to within three of Robin Yount for the all-time franchise lead (251). Having converted 27 consecutive saves dating to last season, Francisco Rodriguez has the second-longest streak in the major leagues behind Pittsburgh's Mark Melancon (28). Rodriguez has converted all 22 of his save opportunities this season and needs eight more to tie Joe Nathan for seventh place on the all-time list. 7 Braun packing power on road this season Brewers slugger has hit 14 of 18 homers away from Miller Park By Adam McCalvy / MLB.com July 25, 2015 PHOENIX -- After hitting three home runs in front of a particularly opinionated crowd at Citizens Bank Park last season, Ryan Braun suggested he was fueled by the boos that precede all of his at-bats on the road since returning from a 2013 suspension. This season, the numbers are bearing out that assertion. After homering for the second straight night in the Brewers' 2-1 win over the D-backs on Friday night, Braun has played precisely the same number of games on the road this season (46) as on the road. And despite playing those home games at cozy Miller Park, where Braun has traditionally done the bulk of his damage, he's been a far more dangerous hitter while brushing off those boos. On the road, Braun has 14 home runs and 41 RBIs. At home, he has four home runs and 20 RBIs. "And Miller Park is such a pitchers' park, you know?" Braun joked. He shrugged and added, "I'm sure it's a statistical anomaly. Over the course of my career, I'm sure my numbers are pretty similar home and road. If anything, better at home. I feel like I've always hit the ball pretty well there." He was right; the rest of Braun's career has been more balanced, with a slight power edge in home games. Entering the year, Braun had a slightly better home run rate (one per 17 at-bats) and slugging percentage (.567) at home than on the road (one home run per 20 at-bats and a.534 slugging percentage). This season, Braun is slugging.360 at home and.602 on the road. He leads the Brewers with 18 home runs this season, two more than runner-up Adam Lind, and one shy of Braun's total from all of "Hopefully I have a lot of homers left at home throughout the course of the year," Braun said. "We have about 20 games at home in August." Nelson s 8 th win extends streak of strong starts Brewers starter delivers 7 shutout innings vs. D-backs By Adam McCalvy / MLB.com July 25, 2015 PHOENIX -- This was another glimpse into what the Brewers hope is Jimmy Nelson's future. The 26-year-old grinded through a 31-pitch first inning without allowing a run, then continued to keep the D-backs off the scoreboard through the end of the seventh in what became a 2-1 win at Chase Field.

Nelson improved to 8-9 overall but 5-1 with a 2.54 ERA over his last six starts, a stretch that has roughly coincided with a similar run for 25-year-old rookie Taylor Jungmann, who will follow Nelson to the mound when the series continues on Saturday. "Over the last month, we've played really good baseball and we have a bunch of young starting pitchers who are really throwing the ball well," said right fielder Ryan Braun, whose 18th home run helped fuel Friday's win. "We've got four young guys [Mike Fiers, Wily Peralta, Nelson and Jungmann] who are basically making the minimum, none of them are eligible for arbitration for a while, and they're all at least No. 2 or 3 starters, with the potential to be better than that. "I think it's exciting and encouraging for all of us." Nelson has been encouraging in short bursts all season. There was an eight-inning, one-run, three-hit effort in Cincinnati on April 22, and a nearly identical outing in Detroit on May 19. On June 24 against the Mets, Nelson did it in front of the home fans, allowing a run on two hits in eight innings to begin his strong six-start run. "I'm not letting the stuff that happened before affect me," Nelson said. "Not trying to do too much. Not trying to go out there and paint corners and strike everybody out, just throwing to my strengths and letting the defense work." Two escapes saved Nelson's latest gem. In the first inning, a wild pitch put runners on second and third base with one out, but Nelson struck out David Peralta and Chris Owings. In the third, Nelson intentionally walked the dangerous Paul Goldschmidt following a double steal to load the bases for Peralta, who hit a comebacker to Nelson for a double play. "That was nice," Nelson said. "We practice those in Spring Training, and that was the first one of those I've gotten in a while. It's always kind of weird as a pitcher, because you're pitching at whatever your effort level is, and all of a sudden you get a comebacker. You don't want to throw it 100 mph at him, but at the same time you don't want to lob it, because you'll end up overthrowing him. It's actually a little tougher than it looks." Like everything else he did Friday, Nelson executed.

Braun s 18 th blast backs Nelson s gem By Adam McCalvy and Jake Rill / MLB.com July 25, 2015 PHOENIX -- Jimmy Nelson hurled seven scoreless innings, Francisco Rodriguez preserved his saves streak and the Brewers topped the D-backs, 2-1, on Friday night at Chase Field. Nelson gave up five hits and struck out five, winning for the fifth time in six starts. Ryan Braun hit a solo home run to lead off the sixth inning, the lone blemish for D-backs starter Patrick Corbin. The Brewers won for the fifth time in seven games after Gerardo Parra scored a critical insurance run on a wild pitch in the ninth inning and Rodriguez converted his 22nd save in as many chances, and his 27th in a row dating to last season. "Sometimes being in a close game can kind of help you a little bit," Nelson said. "You kind of keep your edge. You stay tough because you know you need to execute your pitches." Corbin suffered the hard-luck loss in his best outing since returning from Tommy John surgery earlier this month. The left-hander went seven innings, his longest outing of the season, and matched a career-high with 10 strikeouts. The D-backs lost for the ninth time in 11 games. "I just worked ahead, threw a lot of first-pitch strikes and they were chasing the slider," Corbin said. "Since I've been back, I feel like my stuff's there, it's just a matter about being consistent." MOMENTS THAT MATTERED Early missed opportunities: The D-backs had two great chances to score their first run in the first and third innings. In the first, they had runners on second and third with one out but David Peralta and Chris Owings both struck out. Paul Goldschmidt was intentionally walked to load the bases with one out in the third. But again the D-backs couldn't push across a run, as Peralta grounded into a double play. "We had our opportunities, we got the guys where we want them to be and hitters, again that we feel good about up there, and we just didn't come through," D-backs manager Chip Hale said. Back-to-back for Braun: The Brewers' right fielder apparently did not like being tied atop the team's home run leaderboard. Adam Lind tied Braun by hitting No. 16 of the season on Wednesday against the Indians, but Braun has pulled away with home runs in each of the first two games of this series at Chase Field. It's the third time this season that Braun has homered on back-to-back days. He also did so April and May Returning to form: The D-backs have had a strict pitch count on Corbin since his return earlier this month, not wanting him to exceed 90 pitches in a start. He threw a season-high 89 to get through seven innings after pitching exactly five innings in his first three outings. Corbin was also pitching on a regular four days of rest for the first time this season.

For the save: When Owings led off the ninth inning with a triple and scored on Nick Ahmed's sacrifice fly, it marked the first time all season that Rodriguez had allowed a run in a save situation. It erased Rodriguez's distinction as the only full-time closer in Major League Baseball yet to allow a run in a save chance. "It was a normal night for him," Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. "Somebody [Owings] squared-up a ball against him. I know that's kind of a news story, but he pitched a good inning and did his job." QUOTABLE "It kind of got the feeling after about the third [inning] that it was going to be tough to score. That feeling kind of crept over the game, that one run was going to be a big run." -- Counsell, on the Nelson-Corbin duel and the Brewers' big insurance run in the ninth SOUND SMART WITH YOUR FRIENDS Braun plays half of his games at hitter-friendly Miller Park, but has hit the vast majority of his home runs this season (14 of 18) on the road in precisely the same number of games (46 at home, 46 on the road). As a result of those longballs, he has more than twice as many RBIs on the road (41) than at home (20). WHAT'S NEXT Brewers: Taylor Jungmann will seek to continue a streak of four quality starts when he faces the D-backs for the first time in his career at 7:10 p.m. CT Saturday. The sinkerballer owns a 1.29 ERA over his last five starts and has held opponents to a.211 average in his first eight Major League starts. D-backs: The D-backs send Rubby De La Rosa to the mound for the third game of the series at 5:10 p.m. MST. De La Rosa pitched seven innings of one-run ball in a win over the Marlins on Monday, snapping a skid of four straight starts without a win. The right-hander gave up four runs in five innings in his only career start against the Brewers on May 29. Peralta likely to return to rotation soon By Adam McCalvy / July 24th, 2015 PHOENIX -- Wily Peralta's next start will most likely be in the Major Leagues, Brewers manager Craig Counsell said before Friday's 2-1 win without revealing how or where he would fit Peralta into a full pitching rotation. Peralta has been on the disabled list since the final week of May, rehabbing a left oblique strain. He made three Minor League rehabilitation starts, the most recent on Tuesday at Double-A Biloxi, before rejoining the Brewers

on Thursday. On Friday afternoon, Peralta threw his regular bullpen session with pitching coach Rick Kranitz and catcher Martin Maldonado. "We're going to wait a little while to decide," Counsell said. "I don't believe he'll throw another rehab start. I'm not going to go 100 percent on that." At the moment, the Brewers have probable starters listed for the remaining games of their four-game series at Chase Field, and for all three games of the subsequent series in San Francisco. Matt Garza is scheduled to pitch Sunday, which would be Peralta's regular day. Kyle Lohse is scheduled to pitch the next night at AT&T Park. How will the Brewers open a spot? Here are some of the possibilities: An internal move. Lohse (5-11, 6.29 ERA) could be sent to the bullpen or released, which the Brewers have done in the past with struggling veterans like Jeff Suppan and Randy Wolf near the end of contracts. It's difficult to see the team optioning Taylor Jungmann back to the Minors considering his success since a promotion from Triple-A Colorado Springs, but such a move is an option. A trade. Lohse is a free agent to be, and the Brewers anticipated being able to shop him to contenders. A trade isn't out of the question if another team views Lohse as a change-of-scenery candidate. Mike Fiers, who is scheduled to start Tuesday, has drawn some interest, and Garza has also been mentioned to a lesser degree. A six-man rotation. The Brewers are currently working with an extra bullpen arm, so they could simply go back to the usual seven-man relief corps and use six starting pitchers for the time being. As of Friday, the Brewers were four games into a stretch of 20 games in as many days, and a six-man rotation would allow for some extra rest. Potential trade chip Parra OK day after hit by pitch By Adam McCalvy / July 24th, 2015 PHOENIX -- The Brewers got a big boost Friday when outfielder Gerardo Parra, one of the team's most valuable Trade Deadline commodities, reported feeling no ill effects from a scary hit by pitch the night before. Parra was hit directly on the left kneecap by a Zack Godley cutter and stayed on the ground near home plate for several minutes before remaining in the game. He didn't start Friday night, but that was because Arizona started a left-hander, Patrick Corbin, and not because Parra was hurt.

"I'm ready for pinch-hitting or to play defense," Parra said. "Just a little inflammation, but nothing bad. I feel 100 percent." The Brewers have received varying degrees of interest in Parra from multiple teams, general manager Doug Melvin confirmed Thursday. That came as no surprise, since Parra is a free agent-to-be, a two-time Gold Glove winner and left-handed hitter who entered Friday with Major League Baseball's fifth-highest batting average since April 25, at.341. The four players above him were All-Stars: Paul Goldschmidt, Miguel Cabrera, Jason Kipnis and Bryce Harper. Asked again about trade rumors on Friday, exactly one week before the July 31 deadline for teams to swap players without exposing them to waivers, Parra maintained his previous stance. "I don't want to think anything about that, don't want to talk anything about that," Parra said. "The only thing I want to talk about is Milwaukee right now. I can't control those. I'm happy over here." If he is traded in the next week, at least Parra has experience on his side. The D-backs sent him to the Brewers last July 31 for Minor Leaguers Anthony Banda and Mitch Haniger. "It's hard the first time, but that's the baseball life," Parra said. "We play today here, and maybe tomorrow, we play for another team." Brewers manager Craig Counsell indicated Parra would be back in the starting lineup on Saturday. Nelson, Brewers claim narrow win in Arizona By AP - JUL 25, :59a ET SHARE 74 TWEET 6 PHOENIX -- Ryan Braun homered, Jimmy Nelson threw seven innings in one of his best starts of the season to win a pitching duel with Arizona's Patrick Corbin, and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Diamondbacks 2-1 on Friday night. Nelson (8-9) allowed five hits and escaped a couple of early jams to improve his record to 5-1 over his last six starts. He struck out five and walked three, one intentionally. Corbin (1-3) went seven innings in his fifth and longest outing since his return in early June from Tommy John surgery. The lefty allowed one run, matched his career high with 10 strikeouts, walked one and hit a batter. He blanked the Brewers on three hits before Braun homered on the first pitch of the sixth inning. Milwaukee's second run scored on Brad Ziegler's two-out wild pitch in the ninth.

Chris Owings led off the Arizona ninth with a triple and scored on Nick Ahmed's one-out sacrifice fly to center. Pinch-hitter Welington Castillo grounded sharply to shortstop for the final out to give Francisco Rodriguez his 22nd save in as many tries. Jonathan Lucroy had three hits for Milwaukee in its fifth victory in the last seven games. Arizona has dropped nine of 11 and is 2-6 with two games left in a 10-game homestand. The Diamondbacks wasted two early chances. Ender Inciarte opened the first with a double and Paul Goldschmidt drew a one-out walk. A wild pitch moved the runners to second and third with one out but Nelson struck out David Peralta and Owings to end the threat. An intentional walk to Goldschmidt loaded the bases for Arizona with one out in the third, and Peralta promptly bounced an inning-ending double-play ball to the pitcher. Corbin allowed only one runner to reach second -- Hernan Perez's two-out double in the second -- before Braun hit the first pitch of the second inning into the seats in right field, his 18th home run of the season. Inciarte led off the eighth with a single but was wiped out by the Brewers' third double play of the game. Goldschmidt's two walks gave him a major league-high 77. His 21 intentional walks are by far the most in the majors. TRAINER'S ROOM Brewers hurler Willy Peralta (strained right oblique) is continuing his rehab with Double-A Biloxi. He was placed on the DL on May 25, retroactive to May 23. For the Diamondbacks, Castillo missed his third straight start with a sore hamstring. Manager Chip Hale says he expects Castillo back in the lineup on Saturday. UP NEXT Brewers righty Taylor Jungmann (5-1, 2.04 ERA) takes the mound in the series finale, his ninth start since being called up from Triple-A Colorado Springs. Jungmann has a 1.29 ERA in his last five starts. Arizona looks to rebound at home with Rubby De La Rosa (7-5, 4.83) on the mound.

Getting to know Yhonathan Barrios BY FOX Sports Wisconsin - JUL 24, :00p ET Just who is Yhonathan Barrios, acquired from the Pirates for Aramis Ramirez, and what might his future be with Milwaukee? Barrios is a converted position player, who played shortstop, third base, second base and the outfield, in Pittsburgh's minor-league system from (Barrios missed the 2010 season with an injury). He hit 299/382/433 in rookie ball as a 19-year-old in 2011, but struggled once he reached A ball. He hit 196/255/217 in 2012 and 143/194/250 in 2013 before moving to the mound. Barrios' main pitch is a fastball, which he regularly hits in the mid-90s. His secondary pitches are a work in progress, but he throws a slider and changeup. Barrios, generously listed at 5-foot-11, pitched in 10 games in rookie ball in In 11 innings he allowed just one run on six hits with four walks and 10 strikeouts. In 2014, Barrios started in Low-A with West Virginia then moved to High-A in Bradenton. He combined for a 3.86 ERA and WHIP. His strikeouts, though, dipped from 8.4 per 9 innings in Low-A to 5.4 per 9 in High-A, this despite the fact he was recorded throwing as high as 100 miles per hour. Barrios was made available in the Rule 5 draft in the offseason but wasn't selected, which is not surprising since he had only one season under his belt as a full-time pitcher. In 2015, Barrios was used in two games by the Pirates in spring training, allowing no runs on one hit with one walk and four strikeouts. He began the season with Altoona in Double-A and in 24 2/3 innings pitched to a 1.46 ERA with a WHIP. He was promoted to Triple-A Indianapolis, where in 15 2/3 innings he had a 4.60 ERA and WHIP. In those 40 1/3 combined innings, Barrios allowed just one home run, but he also struck out just 4.9 per 9 innings. It is little wonder why the Brewers are putting Barrios in Double-A with Biloxi. With Altoona, he held righties to a slash line of 176/276/314 and lefties to 216/256/325. But in Triple-A with Indianapolis, he was stung to the tune of 364/432/455 by righties. Lefties hit 280/345/320 against him. Barrios definitely needs some more seasoning as he is still learning how to pitch. "Milwaukee fans can take some solace though in that in return for a player that won't be able to help them next year, they get a potential member of the bullpen," wrote Baseball Prospectus' Christopher Crawford. "There's still a lot of work to be done -- and his floor is organizational fodder -- but because of his arm strength, there's a chance he can become a contributor to a big league staff."

Major League trade between Milwaukee and Pittsburgh adds to Biloxi Shuckers roster By Curtis Rockwell July 24, 2015 at 3:42 PM The Pittsburgh Pirates acquired infielder Aramis Ramierez from the Milwaukee Brewers Thursday, and the player the Brewers got in return is headed for Biloxi. Pitcher Yhonathan Barrios is expected to join the Shuckers as early as Saturday. According to a report on foxsports.com (Fox Sports Wisconsin to be exact), Barrios is a converted position player, who played shortstop, third base, second base and the outfield, in Pittsburgh's minor-league system from (Barrios missed the 2010 season with an injury). "There's

still a lot of work to be done -- and his floor is organizational fodder -- but because of his arm strength, there's a chance he can become a contributor to a big league staff."
