UNM s offensive prowess was never more evident than in a March 13, 1993, contest against Utah. The Lobos scored 20 runs in the sixth and won, 26-8, banging out 25 hits to tie a school record at the time. At the time, UNM set NCAA records for an inning with 25 plate appearances and 17 RBI while the 20 runs was one short of the NCAA mark. New Mexico s historic half-inning consisted of 12 hits (nine singles, two home runs, one triple) and nine walks. Lobo outfielder Jonathan Gallegos put his name in the NCAA record book as well. Gallegos batted three times in the inning, producing a grand slam and a pair of two-run singles. The eight RBI equaled the national record held by six other players. Jonathan Gallegos 5

27 All-Americans 2014 BASEBALL SAM SUPLIZIO - UNM S FIRST ALL-AMERICAN The original superstar in New Mexico baseball was the late Sam Suplizio, a center fielder in the early 1950 s. An all-skyline performer for George Petrol from , Suplizio was the Lobos initial first team All-American, an honor he earned in He hit.435 in his freshman year,.450 as a sophomore and.509 as a junior when he earned All-America accolades. The Lobos went during his three-year career, but won the Skyline Conference championship during his junior year, with a 10-2 record in league play. Following his junior campaign, Suplizio signed a $40,000 contract with the New York Yankees. Manager Casey Stengel thought so highly of Suplizio that he moved a prospect named Mickey Mantle to right field and groomed the former Lobo as his centerfielder. Unfortunately, Suplizio injured his arm and was forced to retire in Suplizio remained in baseball, however, and went on to become the chairman and founder of the NCAA Junior College World Series in Grand Junction, Colo., played at the 10,000-seat Sam Suplizio Field. He was also co-chairman of a committee which brought major league baseball to Denver, in the form of the Colorado Rockies, and he was a scout for the Yankees, Reds, Orioles, and Angels. A 1954 UNM graduate with a BS in Education, Suplizio was named to the UNM Alumni Lettermen Hall of Honor in As his guest of honor to the induction banquet, Suplizio brought with him Angel Hall-of-Famer Rod Carew. He passed away Friday, Dec. 29, 2006 at the age of 74.
