UNM Baseball Contact: Terry Kelly: Cell / - terencemckelly@gmail.com Against Fresno St.: The Lobos swept the Bulldogs earlier this season at Lobo Field by scores of 11-4, 14-3 and 4-3. Despite the lopsided scores of the first two games, each contest remained close to the late innings. UNM had a seven-run seventh in game one and a 12-run eighth in game two. The Lobos also took two of three in Fresno last season. Series Record: 8-9 Home: 6-0 Away: 2-7; Neutral: 0-2 Up Next: The Lobos finish the regular season with a road trip to San Diego St. for three games. LOBO BASEBALL QUICK HITS We really are New Mexico... The 2013 New Mexico baseball team has 12 players from the state of New Mexico. It is no secret coach Ray Birmingham wants to take local kids all the way to Omaha. Ever since he got to UNM, he has been a big advocate of recruiting the best local talent New Mexico has to offer. 1,000 wins... UNM head coach Ray Birmingham reached 1,000 career wins when the Lobos defeated Air Force 19-5 on Saturday, April 6. He spent the first two years of his career at College of the Southwest, the next 18 years at New Mexico Junior College, and is now in his sixth year at the helm of the Lobos. He has averaged over 39 wins per season in his career overall, and 33 per season at UNM. His 166 wins in his first five years is the most a Lobo coach as ever had in their first half a decade on the job, narrowly beating out the 165 Vince Cappelli won from Clinched... Despite being only 80 percent of the way through the conference season, the Lobos clinched the Mountain West regular-season title on Sunday, May 5. Their 14-7 win over Air Force, coupled with losses by UNLV and San Diego St., gave UNM a seven-game lead with only six games remaining. Mountain West record... With their dominating 17-1 win over Air Force on May 4, the Lobos set a MW record with their 11th straight win in conference play. TCU had 10-game MW winning streaks in 2011, 2010 and 2007, but nobody has ever had one as long as the Lobos. The streak stretched to 12 with UNM s 14-7 victory over Air Force on May 5 and is still active heading into this weekend s series at Fresno St. No rest? No problem... Senior catcher Mitch Garver doesn t take days off. You can always pencil him into the lineup no matter what. Need proof? He has started 169 straight games over the past three seasons, including all 47 so far in That is believed to be the third longest active streak in the country. Lobos sweep MW awards... Seniors Mitch Garver and Sam Wolff were named MW Player and Pitcher of the Week for their performance against Air Force May 3-5. Garver hit.571 (11-19) against the Falcons with three doubles, a triple, two home runs, six runs scored and 10 RBI. Wolff had perhaps the best start of his career on May 4. He went a career-long 7.2 innings and tied a career-high with seven strikeouts as UNM routed the Falcons It was Garver s second win of the season and sixth of his career, while it was Wolff s first ever honor. The Bulldogs are coming off a series loss at UNLV but defeated Hawaii 8-6 Tuesday. After losing the first two games of the set to the Rebels, they salvaged the final game with a 9-4 victory. Offensively they re led by preseason All-American Aaron Judge, who leads the team in batting (.366), runs (37), hits (63), doubles (13), home runs (nine), RBI (30), slugging (.634), OBP (.456), and steals (10-11). The rest of the Fresno lineup has struggled, though, as he s the only player on the team who is slugging over.440 or has an OBP over.367. The Bulldogs have fared a little better on the mound as converted infielder Jordan Brink (3.86 ERA), Blake Quinn (team-leading 2.27 ERA) and Derick Velazquez (team-high 10 starts and two CG) have anchored the rotation. The bullpen has struggled, however, as Fresno has four players who have made at least 14 appearances with an ERA over Quinn and Brink have been the best pitchers on the staff, and are holding opponents to a.241 and.212 batting averages against, respectively. Quinn has been phenomenal in conference play, only alloweding six earned runs in 33.2 IP. The Bulldogs are also hitting better in MW play, raising their.267 team batting average all the way to.301, with Judge leading the way hitting a cool.398. Birmingham began his coaching career at Las Cruces Mayfield High School where the Trojans won the 4A championship in 1981 and had three No. 1 rankings through CLINCHED... HOTTER THAN SOUP... On a team full of hot players, nobody is hotter than Luke Campbell. He has eight straight multi-hit games dating back to April 20 at Nevada. Since then he s 17-for-35 (.486) with 12 runs, 10 RBI, five doubles, two triples and a homer. He is slugging.829 during that stretch and has raised his batting average from.328 to.364. John Pustay is finally fully recovered from a dislocated kneecap he suffered last season, and the results are showing. Before narrowly getting thrown out on a groundout Tuesday at Texas Tech, he had recorded a hit in eight straight at-bats. He doubled as a pinch hitter on April 21 at Nevada. He then singled as a pinch hitter April 27 against UNLV. He followed that up with another pinch-hit double against UNLV on April 28, and then tripled in his next at- bat that same game. He then had a double and three singles against the Red Raiders before getting robbed of a hit in the ninth. GOLDEN SPIKES WATCH LIST... USA Baseball released its midseason watch list for the Golden Spikes Award and both Mitch Garver and DJ Peterson were on it. Both players were also on the preseason watch list, and their strong play this season justified that placement. As of May 1 Peterson is on pace to win the Mountain West triple crown for the second straight year (.403, 13, 53), while Garver is second on the team in batting (.379), doubles (16), RBI (43), and OBP (.450). WOLFF ON FIRE... Senior Sam Wolff has been seeing a lot of zeroes lately. Dating back to April 13 at Fresno St., he has allowed only a run in his last 21.2 innings pitched. Included in this stretch was a career-best 14.2-inning scoreless streak. He lowered his ERA from 4.91 to 3.51 during that time. MOVIN ON UP... UNM keeps winning and keeps moving up the rankings. The Lobos have now achieved their highest ever spot in Baseball America s rankings. They moved up one spot to No. 16 this week. Before the season the highest ranking head coach Ray Birmingham s squad had achieved was on March 30, W IS FOR WALKER AND WIN... Last season Josh Walker was part of UNM s excellent weekend rotation and went 8-3. This season he has been moved to the back of the bullpen and has been an anchor as the Lobos closer. He is 8-0 with seven saves. He is one of only 12 pitchers in the nation to be undefeated with eight or more wins. His career record of 16-3 gives him a winning percentage of.842, which is the highest in school history (min. 15 decisions). Also his seven saves this season are tied for third most in school history. IF YOU WANT TO WIN PUT AGUILAR IN... Senior left-handed pitcher Gabe Aguilar is in his fifth season at UNM because he redshirted the 2011 season, and now he is has enjoyed more wins as a Lobo than any other player. When he was on the active roster in 2009, 2010, 2012, and 2013, the Lobos have won 142 games. That breaks the school record of 141 held by Walt Arnold and Mike Foote, who both played from Aguilar also has 60 appearances in his career, which is only two shy of sixth place at UNM. HAGGERTY NAMED POW... Sam Haggerty certainly isn t playing like a freshman this season. His clutch gamewinning sacrifice fly against UNLV on Sunday, April 28, gave UNM a wild, comefrom-behind inning win. His overall play against the Rebels was strong enough to earn him MW Player of the Week honors. He went 6-for-11 (.545) with five runs and three RBI. He was walked four times and laid down two sacrifice bunts as UNM extended its winning streak to 10 games. RANKED AGAIN... UNM opened the season ranked No. 21 by Baseball America, the first time that publication has ever ranked the Lobos in the preseason. After losing their opening series to Oklahoma St.,

YEAR DATE RANK PUBLICATION 2013 April Baseball America 2012 June 1 26 Collegiate Baseball 2010 May 3 27 PING! Baseball 2009 March Baseball America FRIDAY, FRIDAY... One of the reasons the Lobos have been able to win seven straight Mountain West series is their success on Fridays. Typically teams throw their best pitcher the first game of the series, and UNM is an astounding 10-1 on Fridays this season. In fact, the Lobos have won their past 10 games on Friday. Their first game of the season was a 4-2 defeat to Oklahoma St. on Friday, Feb. 15, but since then they have literally been unbeatable. TAKING BASES AND TAKING NAMES... In their 13-6 victory over New Mexico St. on April 17, the Lobos stole seven bases, which is tied for the fifth most ever in a game in school history. It was the most since the Lobos swiped eight bags against BYU on April 8, Josh Melendez (2), Chase Harris (2), DJ Peterson (1), Mitch Garver (1) and John Pustay (1) all got in on the action. UNM now has 61 stolen bases in 47 games this season after swiping 61 in 61 games in LOBOS SWEEP AWARDS... Following a week in which they went 4-1, including a sweep of MW foe Fresno St., Lobos Josh Melendez and Drew Bridges were named MW Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, on April 15. Melendez went 10- for-19 with a double, triple, and home run as he extended his hitting streak to a careerbest 15 games. Bridges got the win in a 3-0 shutout in the first game of a doubleheader at then-no. 10 Arkansas on April 9. He went a career-long 5.1 innings and allowed only three hits while striking out three. THIS ONE ALSO GOES TO Entering the eighth inning on April 13 trailing the Fresno St. Bulldogs 3-2, the Lobos needed a rally. They got one in a big way. The first 12 batters of the inning reached base and each one eventually came around to score. It is the most runs scored in an inning in the Birmingham era. The last time UNM scored 12 runs in a frame was April 15, 2007 at Air Force. (The Lobos also scored 12 runs in an inning earlier that season against Rhode Island on March 11 at Isotopes Park.) The last time the Lobos scored more than 12 in an inning was on March 11, 2005, at Isotopes Park against Savannah St. UNM scored 15 runs in the second on its way to a 20-7 victory. JUST LIKE THEY DREW IT UP... Freshman RHP Drew Bridges was spectacular in his four starts between April 2 and April 26. On April 2 against Texas Tech he allowed two runs on two hits in five innings to earn his first career win. One week later at 10th-ranked Arkansas on April 9 he was even better. He gave up only three hits and one walk in 5.1 shutout innings as the Lobos defeated the Razorbacks 3-0. In his past 15.1 innings he has only allowed eight hits (all singles) and four walks with 10 strikeouts. It was enough to earn him MW Pitcher of the Week honors. On Friday, April 19 at Nevada he outdueled Braden Shipley, a potential first-round pick this June. He allowed only one run on three hits in five innings with four strikeouts. He then threw a career-high six shutout innings against UNLV at Lobo Field on Friday, April 26. He struck out three and only gave up three hits and one walk. Of his 14 hits allowed during that stretch, all of which were singles, three didn t even left the infield. In total he gave up three runs in his 21.1 innings while striking out 13 and walking only five. Not bad for a player who came to UNM this past fall as a shortstop. NO REST? NO PROBLEM... Senior catcher Mitch Garver doesn t take days off. You can always pencil him into the lineup no matter what. Need proof? He has started 169 straight games over the past three seasons, including all 47 so far in That is believed to be the third longest active streak in the country. His 166 wins in his first five years is the most a Lobo coach as ever had in their first half a decade on the job, narrowly beating out the 165 Vince Cappelli won from , and it has come against the five toughest schedules in program history. In 2013 the Lobos have played 13 of their 44 games against teams that have been ranked in the Top 25 at some point during the season. DOUBLE TROUBLE... DJ Peterson is closing in on the school s all-time doubles list with 75 after knocking two against Air Force this past weekend. He is only three shy of the school record, held by Daniel Stovall who hit 78 during his career from Peterson is also now third in Mountain West history behind only Stovall and UNLV s Brent Johnson, who hit 90 from AND COUNTING... Senior catcher Mitch Garver reached a milestone against Nebraska on Saturday, March 2, by recording his 200th career hit. He is only the second player in UNM history whose primary position was catcher to reach that plateau. Former All-American Rafael Neda used to hold the record for career hits for backstops at UNM with 233, until Garver passed him in his first at-bat against Air Force on April 6. He singled through the left side in the first inning and added two more hits that game. He now has 266 career hits as he adds to his lead with every hit he collects. He has a chance to reach the Top 5 for career hits at UNM by the team the season ends. Dusty Young is currently fifth in school history with 286. FOLLOW MY LEAD... The Lobos have had their leadoff man reach in 177 of 418 innings this season for an OBP of.423. That is actually lower than the team s overall

6 New Mexico Baseball Notes Page 6 OBP of.427, but is still a big reason the team is second in the country averaging 8.6 runs per game. COMPARED TO Last season UNM had one of its best seasons in school history, but 2013 is shaping up to be even better. Through the same number of games as last season, in 2013 the Lobo offense has a batting average a whopping 25 points higher, has scored 59 more runs, has hit more doubles, triples and home runs, has higher slugging and on base percentages, and has stolen more bases at a better success rate. Also, Lobo pitchers have hurled more innings after setting a school records in that category in Through 47 games Category Record Batting Runs Walks (batters) Doubles Triples Home runs Total bases Slugging OBP HBP Steals Saves IP BAA DUCK!... Lobo batters have been hit by 59 pitches in 47 games so far this season for an average of 1.26 HBP per game. If they keep up their current pace they will move into second place on the school s singleseason list by the end of the year. REAL IS FOR REAL... Sophomore first baseman/designated hitter Alex Real is having a breakout campaign in his second season with the Lobos. He is hitting.330 with six home runs and 30 RBI. He has also chipped in with 16 doubles and a.516 slugging percentage. His breakout truly began in last season s Mountain West Tournament when he recorded a championship game-record seven RBI. He currently ranks in the Top 10 in 11 offensive categories in MW play. He has also yet to commit an error in conference play this season. HALFWAY HOME... Following their 10-3 win over Texas Tech on April 2, the Lobos have now passed the halfway point of the regular season. As of May 6 they lead the Mountain West in 16 offensive categories: batting, slugging, OBP, runs, hits, doubles, triples, home runs, total bases, plate appearances, at-bats, walks, HBP, stolen bases, fewest strikeouts and sacrifice flies. Individually Lobos lead the MW in 15 offensive categories. On the pitching side, Josh Walker leads the conference in wins, and Sam Wolff has allowed the fewest doubles among all qualified pitchers. Chase Harris is one of only three players yet to commit an error this season. MR. CLUTCH... On March 19 vs. Missouri St. and again on March 22 vs. Nevada Mitch Garver delivered a game-winning, walk-off hit. After defeating the Wolf Pack, teammate DJ Peterson called him Mr. Clutch. Garver has now delivered a walkoff hit four times in his career. Senior lefthanded pitcher Gabe Aguilar is having his best season to date in the cherry and silver in his fifth season in the program. He has been one of the Lobos most reliable relievers all season. Two stats in particular stand out for him. 1) Opponents are just 5-38 (.132) against him with two outs. 2) He s not simply a lefty specialist, but lefthanded batters are hitting just.159 (7-44) against him. HIT PARADE... Senior catcher Mitch Garver saw his career-long 26-game hitting streak come to an end Tuesday, April 2 against Texas Tech. It was the second longest in Division I this season. During the streak he had 11 multi-hit games, including three games with three and two games with four hits. It was the second longest hitting streak in the nation this season, behind only Matt Oberste of Oklahoma s 30-game streak. SACRIFICE ANYTHING... Senior infielder Alex Allbritton is currently eighth in the nation with eight sacrifice flies, which is a career-high for the four-year starter. Meanwhile, freshman Sam Haggerty leads the MW with 14 sacrifice bunts, which places him in a tie for 14th in the country. TARGET PRACTICE?... Despite standing only 5 6, freshman Jared Holley has been hit 15 times this season. He is tied for the conference lead despite having 61 and 35 fewer at-bats than the players he s tied with, Air Force s Garrett Custons and David Baska. Holley is averaging 0.39 HBP per game, which is 15th in the nation. With six regular-season games remaining, Holley is tied for the fifth most HBPs in a season. The HBP single-season school record is 19, which was set by Aaron Santini in CAN T CATCH ME... Good luck trying to throw out senior center fielder Josh Melendez if he takes off stealing because you ll need it. Dating back to Feb. 24 last season, he successfully stole 29 bases in a row. He stole 21 straight to end the 2012 season and started 2013 a perfect 8-for-8. The streak came to an end April 12 against Fresno St. CHASING DJ... Despite missing four games with a strained hamstring, DJ Peterson currently leads or is tied for the lead in seven offensive categories in the MW:, slugging, OBP, runs, RBI, doubles, home runs, and total bases. He is also second in hits, only four behind teammate Mitch Garver, and walks, one behind teammate Sam Haggerty. EXPECT RUNS EARLY... Both the Lobos and their opponents are scoring early and often this season. In the first inning of games the Lobos (40 runs) and their opponents (41) have combined to score 81 runs.... AND EXPECT RUNS LATE... The highest scoring inning for UNM this season has been the eighth. The Lobos (66) and their opponents (42) have combined for 108 runs in the second-to-last frame. So beware if you re a reliever coming in to protect a lead late in the game. GARVER NAMED POW... After extending his hitting streak to a career-best 22 games and recording two game-winning, walk-off hits from March 19-24, senior catcher Mitch Garver was named Mountain West Player of the Week. EXTRA, EXTRA... In 2012 the Lobos had only three games all season go into extra frames, but they blown past that number this season. Unfortunately, unlike last year when they went 2-1 the Lobos struggled in extras to start the season. They lost their first three extra-inning games and were outscored 6-0 in the process. Things have be turning around for the Lobos, however. UNM recorded its first extra-inning win of the season March 15 at No. 21 UNLV when Josh Melendez drove in the game-winning run in the 10th inning of a 3-2 affair. They followed that up with a come-from-behind 6-5 victory over Missouri St. in the first game of a doubleheader on March 19. Most recently the Lobos rallied for a inning win over UNLV at Lobo Field on April 28. ELEVEN? HA! THIS ONE GOES TO Junior DJ Peterson had himself a weekend against UC Riverside as he reached base safely in 12 straight plate appearances. Beginning with his final at-bat on Friday, March 9, and extending through both games of the doubleheader on March 10, he had seven straight hits, including four home runs, before the Highlanders refused to pitch to him. After homering in his first at-bat in the second game of the twin bill, he saw 20 straight pitches out of the strike zone and walked five times. Even though he played two full games and in parts of two others, he did not make an out for over 40 hours. RUNS FOR EVERYONE... In six games from March 5 through March 10 the Lobos scored 75 runs. A month later that was more than five teams had scored all season. UNM currently ranks fourth in the nation in scoring and is averaging 7.9 runs per game. WALK THIS WAY... The Lobos drew 15 walks against UC Riverside in the second game of their doubleheader on March 9. It was one shy of the school record and two shy of the Mountain West record. DJ Peterson (five) and Ryan Padilla (four) accounted for nine of those walks. GO DJ, THAT S MY DJ... After his tremendous series against UC Riverside, DJ Peterson rose up the national leaderboard in numerous categories. He remains near or at the top in several. WHAT A WEEK FOR WALKER... Junior

7 New Mexico Baseball Notes Page 7 Josh Walker had a tremendous week on the mound for the Lobos from March In three appearances he hurled nine scoreless innings and allowed only seven hits while striking out 16 to earn his first win and first two saves of the season. MMM-MMM GOOD... Senior Luke Campbell got off to a tremendous start in After coming off the bench in the season-opener, he started the next 13 games and recorded a hit in every one. On March 5 against LaSalle he hit his first home run since May 6, 2011, and on March 10 he recorded two assists from left field. Not bad for someone who missed all of 2012 due to a fractured orbital bone. THAT S GOTTA HURT... Against LaSalle on March 5, the Lobos were plunked by six pitches. It was the most HBP for UNM since BYU pitchers hit six Lobos on March 13, Freshman Jared Holley was hit three times against the Explorers, the most in a single game for a Lobo since Jordan Pacheco was also hit three times on Feb. 28, 2006, against the New Mexico St. Aggies. The Lobos were also hit six times in game one of their doubleheader against Missouri St. on March 19. BIG-INNING WOES... UNM has been on the wrong side of big innings this season. Their opponents have scored four or more runs in an inning 21 times. In fact, 102 of the 284 runs (35.9 percent) their opponents have scored this season have come during those 21 innings. MORE ZEROES FOR CARMAN... Junior righty A.J. Carman had an outstanding start to his UNM career. He allowed only one run in his first 15 innings, including a string of 12 2/3 scoreless frames in a row. SHOUTOUT TO SHUTOUTS... From Feb. 17 through Feb. 23 Lobo pitchers did not allow a run over 21 consecutive innings. For the final 5 1/3 innings during UNM s 9-1 victory over Oklahoma St., through the 7-0 shutout of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, and for the first 6 2/3 innings against Iowa, Lobo pitchers held the opposition scoreless. It was the longest scoreless innings streak by Lobo pitchers since at least the 1981 season as complete box scores are unavailable prior to that year. The Lobos had five players named to the Kleberg Bank College Classic All-Tournament Team: senior catcher Mitch Garver (.357, 3 RBI); sophomore first baseman Alex Real (.286, one HR); freshman second baseman Sam Haggerty (.444, one 2B); junior third baseman DJ Peterson (.383, two 2B, one 3B, one HR); and junior starting pitcher A.J. Carman (7 IP, 0 R, 3 K). SENIOR LEADERSHIP... Senior shortstop Alex Allbritton was not expected to play in the season-opening series against Oklahoma State due to a broken index finger on his throwing hand. However, after freshman Jared Holley suffered a concussion he played the final 18 innings of the series and hit.429 with two RBI. He also handled eight chances in the field and did not make an error, despite a bulky splint on his broken finger. HE S THE BAUM... Junior college transfer Kevin Baumgartner had a solid Division I debut against Oklahoma State on Feb. 16. Coming on in relief of starter Anthony Consiglio the lefty allowed only one run on three hits with six strikeouts. His work allowed the Lobos to build a 14-6 lead by the time he exited the game in the eighth inning. FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING... Ten Lobos saw their first Division I action in the series against Oklahoma State: Kevin Baumgartner, A.J. Carman, Anthony Consiglio, Jonathan Cuellar, Sam Haggerty, Chase Harris, Jared Holley, Tyler Kamtz, Jered Meek, and Tyler Spencer. Freshman Taylor Duree appeared in his first game against Nebraska, and versus LaSalle Drew Bridges, Matt Villalobos and Victor Sanchez all made their first collegiate appearances. GOLDEN SPIKES ALERT... Senior catcher Mitch Garver and junior third baseman DJ Peterson were two of 50 players named to the Golden Spikes Award watch list by USA Baseball. The Golden Spikes Award is given annually to the best amateur baseball player in the country. In 2012 Peterson was one of 30 semifinalists for the award and won the fan portion of the voting, earning nearly three times as many votes as the next closest player. GARVER, PETERSON, PADILLA NAMED PRESEASON ALL-AMERICANS... Senior catcher Mitch Garver, junior third baseman DJ Peterson, and sophomore outfielder Ryan Padilla all earned preseason All- America honors. Garver and Peterson were named by the NCBWA, Collegiate Baseball newspaper, and PerfectGame.org. They were the only pair of teammates to be named First Team Preseason All-American by the NCBWA and Collegiate Baseball. They are also the first Lobo teammates to earn First Team Preseason All-America status the same season. Padilla was named to Collegiate Baseball s third team. This is the first time the Lobos have had three Preseason All-Americans in one year since 2007 when Jordan Pacheco, Daniel Stovall, and Ian Hollick were all honored. STOP WATCH... Senior Hobie McClain was named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association watch list for the Stopper of the Year Award, which is given annually to the best reliever in Division I baseball. McClain is one SUMMER FUN... Several UNM players had solid summer league campaigns following the 2012 season: senior outfielder Luke Campbell and sophomore catcher Alex Real were both named All Stars in the Northwoods League; left-handed pitcher Will Mathis earned Texas Collegiate League Pitcher of the Week honors on Aug. 1 after he hurled 10 shutout innings in a 1-0 victory; Mitch Garver led all catchers in the prestigious Cape Cod League with a.298 batting average; and DJ Peterson led Team USA in home runs and RBI in 16 games against international competition. ONE OF THE BEST... Over the past three seasons only 25 teams in the country have played in an NCAA regional each year and the Lobos are one of those teams. Even more impressive is that UNM is one of only six schools out of those 25 that is not in a BCS conference. The other five schools include perennial powers Rice and Cal St. Fullerton, as well as Coastal Carolina, Kent St., and Oral Roberts. BACK-TO-BACK CHAMPS... After an unexpected run to the 2011 Mountain West Tournament title, the Lobos returned in 2012 as a favorite to take home the championship. After sharing the regularseason crown with TCU, the Lobos swept through the tournament once again to earn their second straight automatic berth (and third straight overall) to an NCAA regional. The Lobos have now won seven straight games at the MW Tournament after only winning eight total the five previous years. In 2012 they outscored their opponents 40-5 over three games, securing their place as the best team in the Mountain West Ṫhe Lobos dominated right from the get-go last year, opening the tournament

8 New Mexico Baseball Notes Page 8 with a 13-0 victory over the host UNLV Rebels. They followed that up with a hardfought, come-from-behind 5-2 win over TCU. Then in the championship game they set numerous tournament records during a 22-3 blowout of San Diego State. PLAYING THE CREAM OF THE CROP... Once again head coach Ray Birmingham has challenged his team with a very tough schedule. UNM will host 2012 NCAA tournament participant Missouri State for a doubleheader, play a home-and-home with Rio Grande Rival New Mexico State, and travel to play two games at Arkansas, which made the College World Series last season and is ranked #1 in several preseason polls. The Lobos also play one game against both Oklahoma and Arizona State, ranked as high as 14th and 16th, respectively, in the preseason. Throw in six league games against MW newcomer Fresno State, who also made an NCAA Regional last season, and the Lobos face a daunting task as they try to advance to the NCAAs for a fourth consecutive season. There s nowhere to hide on our schedule once again, Birmingham said. I think we play a tougher non-conference schedule than many SEC, Big 12, and Pac 12 teams. I m sure our non-conference schedule will be ranked at least in the top 50 in the country, if not the top 40. In all, the Lobos play 13 games against teams that made an NCAA Regional in WE ARE NEW MEXICO... COACHES PICK LOBOS TO WIN MOUNTAIN WEST... The UNM baseball team was voted an overwhelming favorite to win its second straight Mountain West championship Feb. 8 as the preseason coaches poll was released. Head coach Ray Birmingham s Lobos received five first place votes and 35 points overall to finish well ahead of second place San Diego State. The Aztecs received the other first place vote to finish with 26 points and narrowly edge out Mountain West newcomers Nevada (23 points) and Fresno State (22). UNLV (13) and Air Force (7) were voted fifth and sixth, respectively. UNM returns six starters from last season s team that went 37-24, won both the MW regular-season and tournament championships, and advanced to an NCAA regional for the third straight season. Included in that group are 2012 Co- Mountain West Players of the Year Mitch Garver (.377, 10 home runs, 57 RBI) and DJ Peterson (.419, 17, 78). I think we have a target on our back from the last two years, Peterson said referring to the fact that the Lobos won the 2011 MW Tournament as well. I think every team in the Mountain West is going to bring a little extra edge (when facing us). We are going to stay composed and keep doing what we do.... Hopefully that will result in a Mountain West championship at the end of the year. The Lobos also dominated the preseason All-Mountain West team as Garver, Peterson, Alex Allbritton, Ryan Padilla, and Hobie McClain were all honored. Garver, Peterson, and Allbritton were first team All-MW selections last season, while Padilla, the only sophomore on the preseason team, was a second team choice Ḟresno State was the only other school to place multiple players on the team as every MW institution was represented. Despite the team s recent success over the last few seasons, however, the Lobos aren t satisfied with anything less than a trip to Omaha, Neb., and the College World Series. I obviously think our expectations are to go to Omaha, Peterson said. I don t think we can cut ourselves short with the amount of talent we have and (our) great coaching staff. I think there are no other expections (except) going to Omaha. Allbritton agrees. I think (we re) going to be a really strong team, he said. This is my fourth year with the program, and we have as good of talent as ever, I think. This is a close group of guys. The Lobos open their season on Friday, Feb. 15 at Isotopes Park against the Oklahoma State Cowboys. We are excited, Birmingham said. We are ready to go out and prove something. Rk. He has also called professional basketball, college volleyball, and high school sports. LOBOS ON TV... The Lobo baseball game at Texas Tech on April 30 will be broadcast live on Fox College Sports SEASON PREVIEW By Richard Steves - Senior Writer, GoLobos. com In massaging out a budget for 2013, Lobo Coach Ray Birmingham probably was tempted to toss a few extra bucks into a certain line item: baseballs. His Lobos surely will knock the cover off more than a few baseballs this season. These guys are mashers. They put a serious hurt on the leather. But Coach B also might need a few extra baseballs in the bullpen. He has a host of strong-armed hurlers hitting the 90 mph range, but those Lobo arms might lose a few balls in the distant mesa well, at least until they zoom in on the strike zone. Again, the mound is the key to the Lobos season and part of that key is how quickly the New Mexico pitching staff embraces the strike zone and the fine art of D-I pitching. We can hit, said Birmingham. That s not even an issue. The pitching will be a big difference for us this year. Our pitching has a chance to be really good or who knows? Birmingham is being honest and fair in assessing his pitching. He lost the heart of the pitching staff from It s not that Birmingham has a shortage of talented arms in his bullpen. He is loaded and if these arms live up to their potential, this pitching staff might be better than But there are question marks that form Birmingham s who knows? There is only one Lobo returning who won more than two games in 2012 Josh Walker, who was 8-3 last season. UNM lost 21 wins in Austin House, Gera Sanchez and Rudy Jaramillo. A lot of new Lobos have some proving to do. Birmingham is wise enough to know you have to wait and see what happens. He also is experienced enough to know good arms when he sees them. Our pitching staff has more arms, more arm strength, more pitches than ever in the history of this school, said Birmingham. But we have to figure a few things out and some of these guys have to figure things out upstairs (mentally). The guys with division-one experience are few. I think one of the biggest changes is we have a very, very high caliber pitching coach in Dan Spencer. We have someone

9 New Mexico Baseball Notes Page 9 riding the hitters at the same level I m riding the hitters and that s huge. Spencer has experience both in teaching the game and in recruiting the game. He spent the past four seasons as the Texas Tech head man. He spent 11 seasons at Oregon State and helped the Beavers to back-to-back national titles in 2006 and Spencer inherits a Lobo bullpen bulging with talent, but needing to get its act in order upstairs. And several of these Lobo arms need some D-I exposure. The top returners statistically are Hobie McClain (1.80 ERA), Alex Estrella (2.89), Sam Wolff (5.52) and Walker (8-3, 4.19). Jake McCasland, a two-year letterman, is recovering from elbow surgery and could be throwing in April. But Spencer has to get some juice, strikes, innings out of more than a few firstyear (freshmen/transfers) Lobos including Drew Bridges, A.J. Carman, Tyler Spencer, Kevin Baumgartner, Tyler Rowe, Victor Sanchez, Anthony Consiglio, Taylor Duree and Jonathan Cuellar. Heck, Spencer should be putting in for overtime with all the arms Birmingham is stuffing into the New Mexico bullpen. Our pitching staff is better than I ve ever seen here, said Birmingham. We have a ton of guys who can pitch. But we haven t found our Friday Night guy yet. We need that one big arm to step up. When it comes to stepping up to the plate, the Lobos are loaded there, too. However, this is D-I proven stuff. The Lobos return six starters from last year s team including the obvious headliners in Mitch Garver and Peterson, the 2012 Co-Mountain West Players of The Year. These two Lobos have been blanketed by preseason All-American accolades. Peterson hit.419 last year and Garver pounded the ball at a.377 clip. The Lobos also return preseason All-American Ryan Padilla (.353 avg.) and three-year starter, All-MW shortstop, Allbritton. Alex Real, a sophomore who had a MW record seven RBI in the 2012 title game, returns looking to pad his.271 batting average of Outfielder Josh Melendez, MVP of the MW Tournament last season, returns with his.347 batting average from last season. Senior outfielder Luke Campbell missed the 2012 season where he was expected to be the team s cleanup man, but he s back, and the Lobos also have John Pustay as a designated hitter and outfielder. Birmingham is so loaded behind the plate that he can afford to push Garver to first base and alternate those positions between Garver and Real. Alex has a chance to be as good behind the plate as Garver, said Birmingham. Alex will be an All-American before he leaves here. Birmingham s infield has freshman Sam Haggerty at second, Allbritton at short and Peterson at third base. The outfield goes Padilla (left), Melendez (center) and transfer Chase Harris (right). Harris, a speedster, played at College of Southern Idaho and was the Region 18 Player of The Year. Campbell and Pustay (.291 avg. in 2012) will get time in the outfield and also at the plate in the DH role. If the Lobos opposition has an ace on its staff, they might want to throw him against these bombers. Simply put, the Lobos have proven hitting, talented but unproven arms, solid defense and a Ray Birmingham swagger. They expect to win. HITTING In 2012 the Lobos ranked fifth in the country with a.326 team batting average. The Lobos should be primed for another Top-5 finish because they return each of their top four hitters from last season: junior third baseman DJ Peterson (.419), senior catcher Mitch Garver (.377), sophomore outfielder Ryan Padilla (.353), and senior outfielder Josh Melendez (.347). Offensively we can match up with anybody in the country, head coach Ray Birmingham said. The Lobos will also welcome back senior Luke Campbell, who was the team s third leading hitter in 2011 but missed last season due to a facial fracture he suffered a week before the season started. Junior John Pustay (.294), sophomore Alex Real (.271), and senior Alex Allbritton (.251) also return to form what should once again be a potent UNM lineup. PITCHINIG STAFF Unlike the hitters, the Lobo pitching staff took a hit following last season. UNM returns only two pitchers (Josh Walker and Sam Wolff) who threw more than 30 innings last year. Gone are two weekend starters who are now pitching professionally (Austin House and Gera Sanchez), as well as a weekday starter (Rudy Jaramillo), and the Lobos saves leader last season (Bobby Mares). Head coach Ray Birmingham is confident in the staff he possesses, however. We have a staff full of guys who can really pitch, he said. Last year was the start of that and it is even better now.... Our bullpen is unbelievable. (Sam Wolff has) a 98 mph arm.... Josh Walker is pitching really well, we have some nice junior college transfer, (Anthony) Consiglio and (A.J.) Carman, that are throwing really well. The number of quality pitchers on this pitching staff is night and day (compared to previous seasons). CATCHER Behind the plate, the Lobos have the top catcher in the Mountain West, if not the entire country, in Mitch Garver, one of the reigning Mountain West Co-Players of the Year, a finalist for the 2012 Johnny Bench Award, and a preseason first team All- American. Backing him up is sophomore Alex Real, who had a breakout summer league campagin. Playing for the Eau Claire Express in the Northwoods League, Real made the All Star Game, in which he hit a home run, despite not playing the position at all during his freshman season with the Lobos. He finished his summer with five home runs, 14 doubles, and 22 RBI. Alex has a chance to be as good behind the plate as Garver, said Birmingham. Alex will be an All-American before he leaves here. LOBOS DRAFTED... The New Mexico baseball program has had 82 studentathletes in its history drafted by Major League Baseball. In 2012 Austin House was selected by the Oakland A s in the 14th round, No. 439 overall, of the MLB draft. During Birmingham s tenure at UNM, New Mexico has had 14 players drafted and 18 have played professional baseball. UNM had a record six players drafted in The current Lobos who have been drafted are; DJ Peterson (Tampa), Jake McCasland (San Francisco), John Pustay (Texas), Sam Wolff (Anaheim, Boston), Alex Real (Atlanta). 30-WIN SEASONS... The Lobos are averaging 33 wins per year during the last five years under Ray Birmingham...The Lobos run from was the most wins UNM has recorded in a three-year period in school history... in 2010, New Mexico had the third highest wins in program history... the most wins in a season by the Lobos is 42 in Birmingham has produced four 34-win seasons in the last five years something no Lobo coach had ever done before... he has also overseen the best five-year stretch in Lobo baseball in 30 years, recording 166 wins... this is the most wins in a five-year period since the Lobos won 169 between 1976 and KREMMEL S NO-NO April 17, 1970 is a day Lobo baseball history was made in Tucson, Ariz., when Jim Kremmel, a hard-throwing lefty from Columbia, Ill., tossed the only documented nine-inning no-hitter in school history. UNM s all-time strikeout king walked two, struck out 11 and allowed just one Arizona runner to advance to second base (on a walk and a sacrifice bunt in the sixth). The Lobos won the game 1-0 with an unearned run in the seventh inning. UNM s Mike Connell threw a 7-inning no-hitter on March 24, 1977, against New Mexico Highlands. Similar greatness has been flirted with by eight other Lobo hurlers by allowing just one hit in a game.

After two years at the helm he took over the newly formed program at New Mexico Junior College in Lovington and coached there for 18 years. After a losing record in his first season, he did not post a record worse than during the rest of his time there. He amassed a record of for a.750 winning percentage and the team s winning percentage failed to finish above.700 in only four seasons. He s an outstanding guy and an outstanding coach, said Jim Harris, the director of the Lea County Museum where the Hall of Fame is housed. We re proud of him down here and we think he belongs in our Hall of Fame. While leading the Thunderbirds Birmingham was named Western Junior College Athletic Conference Coach of the Year seven times, Region 5 Coach of the Year in both 2005 and 2007, and he was honored as the NJCAA Division I Coach of the Year in The Thunderbirds were nationally ranked in 14 seasons, including five Top-10 appearances. 15 New Mexico Baseball Notes Page 15 LAST TIME OUT... LAST TIME OUT... The Lobos won the Mountain West regular-season title outright thanks to their three-game sweep of Air Force. It was their eighth straight MW series victory, and their fourth straight MW series sweep. Friday, May 3, UNM 11, Air Force 10 After rallying from a 7-4 deficit to take a 9-7 lead into the ninth inning Friday against Air Force, the University of New Mexico baseball team saw the Falcons score three times in the top of the inning to take a 10-9 lead. The Lobos, though, aren t losing these types of games lately. UNM s two hottest hitters, John Pustay and Josh Melendez, singled with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth to give the Lobos (28-17, 18-5) an victory over the Falcons (13-31, 5-17). Pustay has hits in 10 of his last 11 at-bats dating back to April 21 at Nevada while Melendez owns a 24-game hitting streak. They didn t do it alone, though, as six Lobos recorded multiple hits, led by Melendez s 4-for-5 performance. We have a heck of a lineup, Birmingham said. We have the best lineup in the country. There might not be too much argument about that in the Mountain West, as UNM won its 10th straight conference game. Sam Haggerty led off the ninth with a single through the left side and DJ Peterson followed with a four-pitch walk. Mitch Garver then laid down a perfect bunt and beat the throw to load the bases with no outs. Pustay was next and he didn t waste any time. He laced a first-pitch single to left to score Haggerty and keep the bases loaded. That brought up Melendez. I was just looking for something middle that I could put in the air and get a sac fly, he said. But (their pitcher) ended up hanging a changeup and I was able to put a good swing on it and get it out there. He certainly did that. He launched the first pitch he saw to deep left-center field and missed a walk-off grand slam by inches. Still, it went in the book as an RBI single and gave the Lobos another key win in their pursuit of the MW regular-season championship. The Lobos opened the scoring in the second. Garver led off with a walk, and Melendez followed with a double to left center to extend his hitting streak to 24 games and give UNM a 1-0 lead. Luke Campbell then reached on an infield single, which sent Melendez to third. Campbell was then thrown out at second on a double steal, but that allowed Melendez to score and make the count 2-0. Air Force tied the game in the top of the third, but UNM retook the lead in the bottom of the frame. Chase Harris doubled over the third-base bag with one out and Haggerty dropped a bloop triple down the left-field line to knock him home. Peterson followed with a sac fly to the warning track in center and gave the Lobos a 4-2 lead. The wheels fell off for starter Drew Bridges in the fourth, though. After recording two quick outs, the Falcons rallied for five runs to chase the freshman righty. Hobie McClain came in and was fantastic in relief. Over 3 2/3 innings he gave up just one unearned run on two hits and a walk. He struck out four and gave the Lobos a chance to rally. They did. With one out in the sixth, pinch hitter Ryan Padilla reached on an error. Melendez then reached on a bunt single to put two men on for Campbell. He doubled down the line in left to plate Padilla and put two men in scoring position for Alex Allbritton. The senior hit his team-leading eighth sacrifice fly to right to score Melendez. Jared Holley then tied the game with a single to center. UNM took the lead 9-7 the very next inning on back-to-back-toback doubles by Peterson, Garver and Pustay. That s where the score remained until Air Force rallied in the ninth. Harris, Haggerty, Garver, Pustay and Campbell recorded two hits apiece, while Pustay drove in three to lead the team. Haggerty, Peterson, Garver and Melendez all scored two runs. Saturday, May 4, UNM 17, Air Force 1 The 17th-ranked University of New Mexico baseball team moved one step closer to clinching a share of the Mountain West regular-season championship as it earned its eighth straight MW series victory with a dominating 17-1 win over the Air Force Falcons in front of 658 fans Saturday afternoon at Lobo Field. With the win the Lobos can clinch a share of the title with a victory over Air Force on Sunday. Both UNLV and San Diego St. are six games back with seven conference games remaining in the season. The Falcons (13-32, 5-18) scored one in the first, but after that it was all Lobos (29-17, 19-4). UNM batted around in both the third and fourth innings to tally 11 runs in those two frames. The Lobos then added one in the fifth, one in the sixth, and two in both the seventh and eighth innings as they recorded a season-high 25 hits. Alex Allbritton led off the fourth with his first home run of the season, and only the second of his career, as part of a 4-for-5 day with four RBI. Senior Sam Wolff got the start on the mound on Senior Day and had one of the best outings of his career. After allowing a leadoff double to open the game, he allowed only three more hits the rest of the way over a career-long 7 2/3 innings. He walked just one and tied a career-best with seven strikeouts as he threw 67 of his 104 pitches for strikes. Due to the lopsided score, the most dramatic moment of the game came in the bottom of the eighth. Josh Melendez was still in search of his first hit of the contest to extend his hitting streak to 25 games, and he needed some help because he was due up sixth in the inning. Pinch hitter Logan Lippert got the inning started with a single to left, and Sam Haggerty drew a full-count walk. DJ Peterson then reached on a fielder s choice and Mitch Garver fouled out, leaving it up to Erik Suarez to get his teammate another at-bat. The senior watched two strikes go by before taking a ball. He then smashed a 1-2 pitch to center for a single to give Melendez one last chance. The Lobos center fielder also watched two strikes go by before lacing an 0-2 pitch to right that dropped just in front of Air Force s Jake Schomaker for a single that kept his hitting streak alive. Melendez was the only Lobo starter not to have a multi-hit game. Chase Harris joined Allbritton with four hits to lead the team, while Peterson, Garver, and Luke Campbell all finished with three apiece. Like Allbritton, Peterson also drove in four runs while Garver drove in three. Peterson and freshman Jared Holley led the team with three runs scored. Sunday, May 5, UNM 14, Air Force 7 Mitch Garver and his Lobo teammates knew they had a chance to clinch the Mountain West regular-season title at home Sunday. The Albuquerque native helped make sure they did. The senior catcher hit two home runs and finished with six RBI as the 17th-ranked Lobos defeated Air Force 14-7 in front of 663 fans at Lobo Field Sunday afternoon. The win, combined with losses by San Diego St. and UNLV, gave UNM its second-straight MW regular-season title. Counting their MW Tournament title in 2011, UNM has won three-straight conference championships. Despite clinching the championship, however, there was almost no visible emotion exhibited by the Lobos (30-17, 20-4) after the game. We knew coming in (to today) we could clinch the conference, but that s what we expected from day one, UNM senior Josh Melendez said. It wasn t too exciting and we weren t too emotional. We just kept our cool and did our thing. UNM head coach Ray Birmingham was also restrained in his enthusiasm. It s bigger plans, he said about his teams lack of emotion. The bar I set for this team is pretty high. The Lobos jumped on the board in the first on an RBI double by Garver. After Air Force (13-33, 5-19) tied the game in the second, UNM immediately answered with four runs and held the lead for good. With one out Jared Holley singled through the right side. He scored on a double by Chase Harris, but Harris was out at third trying for a triple. The inning wasn t done, though, as Sam Haggerty walked and DJ Peterson singled to left. Garver then came up and launched a 1-1 pitch over the wall in left to give UNM a 5-1 lead. I just reacted today, the All-American said. I was trying to simplify my approach. It was a slider, a little bit down, and I just let my barrel get to it. The Falcons refused to go quietly and scored three times in the top of the third to chase starter A.J. Carman. Josh Walker (8-0) came in, though, and pitched very effectively over the next three innings as UNM expanded its lead. With two outs in the third Alex Allbritton tripled and scored on a single by Holley. In the fourth, Garver hit his second home run of the game, a solo shot to left, to give UN M a 7-4 lead. Coach Birmingham told me he anticipated what I was going to get, and I got it, and I hit it out of the yard, he said about the second home run. It was his second career multi-homer game. He also added an RBI single in the fifth to increase the Lobo lead to 8-4. After the Falcons cut the lead to 8-6, sophomore Alex Estrella came out of the pen and pitched effectively for 1 2/3 innings to keep UNM in control. The Lobos added four in the sixth, with two coming on a home run by Chase Harris, and two in the seventh, one on an RBI triple by Luke Campbell and one on an RBI single by Allbritton. Air Force scored in the eighth and was threatening for more, but fifth-year senior Gabe Aguilar came on to record the last four outs and, in the process, became the all-time winningest Lobo as UNM won its 142nd during his time on the active roster. The story, as it usually is with the Lobos, was about the offense. A day after knocking a season-high 25 hits, UNM had 21 to raise its team batting average to a staggering.342. This team can hit, Birmingham said matter-of-factly. Garver and Harris both finished 4-for-6 to lead the team, with Harris three RBI behind only Garver s six. Peterson, Allbritton, and Holley all finished with three hits apiece and six Lobos scored two runs. Melendez finished 2-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to a career-high 26 games, which matches the longest for a Lobo this season. Despite having the conference title locked up, the Lobos feel they need to stay focused. We definitely won t let up, Garver said. We have to maintain our steady pace all the way through the postseason. We plan on doing that these next two weekends, into the conference tournament and hopefully into regionals. We just want to stay hot and stay even the whole time.
