LOBO BASEBALL QUICK HITS We really are New Mexico... The 2015 New Mexico baseball team has nine players from the state of New Mexico. It is no secret coach Ray Birmingham wants to take local kids all the way to Omaha. Ever since he got to UNM, he has been a big advocate of recruiting the best local talent New Mexico has to offer. In fact his rosters have had more players from New Mexico than any other state in each of his eight years at UNM. Let s turn two... New Mexico has been one of the most prolific teams in the nation in turning double plays since Over the last three-plus seasons UNM has turned 183 double plays, which is the 10th most in the country during that span. This season they are 12th in the NCAA with 14 twin killings, and fourth in double plays per game with Bullpen dominance... The UNM bullpen has been outstanding at protecting leads during the last several seasons. The Lobos have won 39 straight games when leading after six innings, a streak that dates back to June 1, And if UNM is leading after eight innings? Forget it. The Lobos haven t lost when leading after eight in 65 straight games. The last time the Lobos blew a lead was in their first game at the renovated Lobo Field when Luke Campbell lost a ball in the sun, which would have been the final out of the game, and allowed the go-ahead (and eventual winning) run to score. After spending most of the previous nine seasons at Isotopes Park, the Lobos returned to a newly renovated Lobo Field with astounding success. After losing two of their first five games in their new home park, the Lobos finished the season with 11 straight wins at home to post a 14-2 record at Lobo Field. They re hitting just.226 as a team, and no qualified batter has an average better than the.278 mark sported by junior outfielder Garrett McMullen, who also has two of the team s five home runs. They have struck out 134 times in 16 games while drawing just 48 walks. Their collective on-base percentage is just.302. SFA s pitching staff hasn t fared much better, posting a 6.15 ERA. They have barely struck out more batters than they have walked (103-97), but are holding opponents to a respectable.281 batting average against. Defensively, they re not much better. They re averaging nearly two errors per game (1.88) and have thrown out just 6 of 32 attempted base stealers (17.7 percent). LET S TURN TWO... New Mexico has been one of the most prolific teams in the nation in turning double plays since Over the last three-plus seasons UNM has turned 183 double plays, which is the 10th most in the country during that span. This season they are 12th in the NCAA with 14 twin killings, and fourth in double plays per game with ON BASE MACHINE... For his career he has reached safely in 121 of his 127 career starts. BULLPEN DOMINANCE... The UNM bullpen has been outstanding at protecting leads during the last several seasons. TURF MONSTER?... Despite playing their home games on FieldTurf the Lobos have had some adventures defensively lately. On Friday, March 6 they snapped a streak of 16 straight games with at least one error. Dating back to last season they have recorded just four error-free outings in their last 50 contests.

LOBOS ON TV... The University of New Mexico baseball team, in conjunction with LoboTV, Learfield Sports and upublic tv, are pleased to announce that 15 home games this season will be broadcast live by upublic and aired on My50 (Comcast channel 26 and Cable ONE channel 15) in Albuquerque. Additionally, the Lobos will partner with ESPN Radio The TEAM for the sixth consecutive year to broadcast a minimum of 35 games this season. This is huge for New Mexicans to watch their kids and their team play, UNM head coach Ray Birmingham said. I m all about a united New Mexico and this is very important to making that happen. I want people in Lovington, Bloomfield, Lordsburg and Raton to be excited about Lobo Baseball because if people are fired up there, they re fired up everywhere. All 29 home games by the Lobos will be streamed live on The Mountain West Network, but LoboTV producer Kasey Byers wanted to expand the coverage of baseball. The television broadcast schedule includes UNM s first seven home games, beginning with its contest against San Francisco in the Lobo Invite on Friday, Feb. 27, and continuing through the rest of that tournament and through the Lobos home series against San Diego State the following weekend. upublic will then broadcast UNM s game with Rio Grande Rival New Mexico State on April 21. The Lobos final seven home games, series against Nevada and San Jose State as well as a Tuesday night game versus Arizona State, are the remaining games scheduled to be televised. These will be UNM s first games aired on local television since April 10, 2012, when CBS Sportsnetwork aired the Lobos game against Arizona State to a national audience. upublic will use the radio feed from The TEAM for its broadcasts. The TEAM will broadcast 26 of the Lobos 29 home games with a minimum of 35 games to be broadcast throughout the season. The radio schedule begins with UNM s home opener against San Francisco in the Lobo Invite on Friday, Feb. 27, and includes series against preseason No. 3 Houston and all five Mountain West foes that visit Lobo Field in BACK-TO-BACK-TO-BACK... UNM is one of just five programs in the nation to have won at least a share of its regular-season conference title in each of the last three seasons. The others are Louisville, which won two in the Big East and the American Athletic Conference this season, Bryant (Northeast), Sam Houston State (Southland), and Delaware State

6 New Mexico Baseball Notes Page 6 (MEAC). Florida State has also won the Atlantic Division in the ACC each of the last three years, but this season Miami won the Coastal Division and had a better conference mark. It marks the fourth straight championship season for the Lobos, who won the Mountain West Tournament title as the No. 6 seed in NEXT FRESHMAN UP... Four years running now the Lobos have produced a Freshman All-American. It started with DJ Peterson and his NCAAfreshman record 32 doubles in Then Ryan Padilla hit.353 and helped UNM to Mountain West regular-season and tournament titles in In 2013 Sam Haggerty was honored after being named Co-MW Freshman of the Year and leading UNM with 49 walks. Last season Danny Collier followed in Haggerty s footsteps in earning MW Freshman of the Year honors and hitting.353 despite being limited by hamstring and heel problems. So who s next up for the Lobos? UNM has several intriguing possibilities like Carl Stajduhar, who was the 5A Colorado Player of the Year last season. Luis Gonzalez has tremendous bat speed and great power and was named Division 2 MVP in Arizona last year after hitting.500 with 10 home runs. Cory Voss, who was drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 34th round of the MLB Draft last year, and Scottie Graham each have a chance to see significant playing time at catcher with the position up in the air. Luis Gonzalez had an outstanding first weekend, pitching 4.1 innings of no-hit relief one day and also going 3-for-8 with a pair of doubles. The opportunities will be there for all 14 of the Lobos freshmen, and one thing is for sure: whoever is playing well will get his chance to be a Freshman All-American. LOBOS TABBED FAVORITES BY MW COACHES... For the third straight year the University of New Mexico baseball team has been voted preseason favorites in the Mountain West in the conference s annual preseason coaches poll. The Lobos hope to follow the path of the previous two teams as they won the MW by a record seven games in 2013 and tied for the championship with UNLV last season. It s a nice honor but ultimately doesn t mean anything, UNM head coach Ray Birmingham said. I appreciate the respect, but preseason polls and $3 gets you a cup of coffee. UNM also finished tied with Nevada with the most players on the preseason team with three. Juniors Sam Haggerty and Jared Holley were voted as the team s second baseman and shortstop, respectively, while sophomore Danny Collier tied with Nevada s Trenton Brooks for the utility/ designated hitter spot. The Lobos received three firstplace votes and 30 points overall. San Diego State finished second in the poll with 28 points despite not receiving a single first-place vote. UNLV and Nevada finished tied for third with 25 points apiece. The Rebels received two first-place votes and the Wolfpack one. Fresno State was voted fifth with 22 points and received the final firstplace vote. Air Force and San Jose State rounded out the voting with 10 and seven points, respectively. Rk. 7 New Mexico Baseball Notes Page 7 that advanced to the 2014 NCAA Tournament, including the No. 1 overall seed Oregon State Beavers, super regional participant Houston, and Texas Tech, which advanced all the way to the College World Series. Also on the docket are Arizona State, Kansas and Mountain West foes San Diego State and UNLV. This is another hard schedule, said Birmingham, who is entering his eighth season as head coach. It s really hard, especially for a team that is still very young in regards to position players. UNM opens the season in the Surprise Tournament held in Surprise, Ariz. The Lobos face Michigan State in their season-opener on Friday, Feb. 13 before taking on Northwestern the next day. They close the tournament with games the next two days against the aforementioned Beavers. The following weekend marks the opening of Mountain West play as the defending conference co-champion Lobos visit Air Force in what s sure to be a chilly three games from Feb Despite the historic struggles the Falcons have had, they went 13-6 at home last season, including an eightgame winning streak. To prove how difficult it was to win at Air Force, UNM was one of just two teams, along with Fresno State, to win a series there in The Lobos then open their home schedule with a season-long ninegame homestand, beginning with the Lobo Invite. They ll face Utah Valley at 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 27 in their home opener, and will play a pair of games against both the Wolverines and the University of San Francisco. It should be a good tournament with two quality teams coming in, Birmingham said. UNM will play single games Friday and Sunday and then play both Utah Valley and USF in a doubleheader Sunday. San Diego State visits Lobo Field the following weekend, and two midweek games against Stephen F. Austin March 10 and 11 conclude the homestand. What follows is UNM s toughest stretch of the season by far. It begins with a series at Nevada, which Birmingham believes will be one of the top teams in the Mountain West. Nevada has everyone back, so they should be a conference favorite, he said. NCAA Tournament teams await following the Wolf Pack as midweek road games at Arizona State and Texas Tech are sandiwched around a home series against preseason No. 3 Houston. A home series versus Fresno State precedes a return visit by Texas Tech on Tuesday, March 31. The brutal stretch concludes with a series at San Diego State and two midweek games at Kansas. In the span of 22 days, the Lobos will play 11 games against 2014 postseason participants. If you include Nevada in that group, UNM has 14 contests against potential 2015 NCAA Tournament teams in 27 days. There s no doubt about it, Birmingham said. This schedule has lots of RPI points in it. Following the tough stretch is a five-game homestand against Air Force and Grand Canyon, which is followed by a trip to UNLV. The Lobos will then face Rio Grande Rival New Mexico State on Tuesday, April 21 in the first of two games between the programs. The return game is scheduled for May 5 in Las Cruces, N.M. Following the first matchup with the Aggies the Lobos will play their last weekend non-conference series of the season as they travel to Wichita State. UNM concludes the regular season with three Mountain West series: vs. Nevada May 1-3, vs. San José State May 8-10, and at Fresno State May The Lobos will also host Arizona State on Tuesday, May 12. WE ARE NEW MEXICO... The 2015 New Mexico baseball team has nine players from the state of New Mexico. It is no secret coach Ray Birmingham wants to take local kids all the way to Omaha. Ever since he got to UNM, he has been a big advocate of recruiting the best local talent New Mexico has to offer. In fact his rosters have had more players from New Mexico than any other state in each of his eight years at UNM SEASON PREVIEW By Richard Stevens - Senior Writer, GoLobos.com The catchword, the buzzword, for describing a Ray Birmingham-coached Lobo team usually is the same old word: hitting. His Lobos do this well. And it s not that the New Mexico Lobos of 2015 won t be ball mashers. They will be. But Birmingham s description of the arms taking the mound this season gives reason to think that maybe Birmingham s Lobos are looking at a special season. The Lobos have pitching. We have a starting rotation that is as solid as it s been since I ve been here, said the Lobo coach. And we have a shutdown bullpen and that s huge. The Lobos pitching has not been a weakness the past couple of seasons, but there have been a few holes not enough consistent starters, not enough ornery stoppers coming out of the bullpen. Birmingham thinks he has both ends of the pitching staff for The pitching staff is a veteran staff, said Birmingham. Toller Boardman is good and Drew Bridges and Colton Thomson are good. Those guys are solid. Carson Schneider could be better than anybody here as he grows and gets better. As soon as he becomes sure of himself, he ll be a go-to guy. And Victor Sanchez could possibly be the most notable pitcher we ve had come out of here in a long time. He s pretty good. We don t have the power arms, but we have seven or eight guys who can really pitch. Birmingham goes into the 2015 season looking at Boardman, Thomson, Bridges and Schneider as starters. Sanchez is the headline closer with a laser fastball and a welldisguised breaking ball. Sanchez gets bullpen help from Taylor Duree, Jake Cole and Alex Estrella. There is no senior in that bunch. OK, so the Lobos should have pitching and hitting. How about defense? We probably have one of the best infields we ve ever had, said Birmingham, who says his infield probably is the best on paper in the Mountain West. Now, Jared Holley (3rd), Sam Haggerty (2nd), Dalton Bowers (SS) and Carl Stajduhar (1st) have to prove it on the field. You need to come watch Dalton

8 New Mexico Baseball Notes Page 8 play shortstop, said Birmingham. He is really, really special. The Lobos are coming off a season in They tied for first in the Mountain West race, but did not fare well in the MW Tournament and failed to reach the NCAA playoffs for first time in four seasons. Birmingham s Lobos have yet to win a first-round regional, but the key in 2015 is to get back there and give it another go. We want to make it to regionals and we want to make it to Omaha (NCAA finals), said Ryan Padilla. That s our goal. The guys before me put New Mexico on the map and it s our job to keep that moving forward and show the rest of the country that NM is a premier program. The Lobos were the preseason pick to win the 2015 MW regular-season title. Birmingham says he appreciates the respect, but now we have to live up to it. There is a great chance the Lobos will walk that walk.. UNM returns six position players from 2014 who hit between.290 and.353. UNM returns 18 letterwinners. The Lobos return six pitchers who posted ERAs of 3.81 or lower We have a little bit more pitching this year, said Haggerty. Said Holley: We are so confident in our hitting, but ever since coach Spence has come here, our pitching has gotten better and better every year. Our pitchers are hard to hit. I would say the toughest pitching in the Mountain West. I m confident in our team taking this conference again. A key position needed to show growth and production this season is behind the plate. That s probably the position we are most vulnerable at right now, said Birmingham. We don t have a veteran catcher. The most difficult position defensively on the field is going to be a freshman (Cory Voss). We have some freshmen who need to become sophomores real quick. Birmingham has a solid outline for a starting lineup for the Surprise Tournament Feb to be held in Surprise, Ariz. UNM opens on Friday with Michigan State. Voss will be behind the plate with the infield formed by Haggerty, Bowers, Holley and Stajduhar. Padilla will be in left field with Danny Collier in center and Aaron Siple in right field. Andre Vigil and Luis Gonzalez also will see time in the outfield, and Chris DeVito will DH. Birmingham says he likes his speed in the outfield and his speed on the bases. Stealing bases is going to be a big deal for us, he said. Really, there doesn t appear to be any major weaknesses on this 2015 roster. The next step for the Lobos is to continue to improve as the season progresses. We have some younger guys who need to get their feet wet and see what college baseball is all about, said Duree. You can t teach experience. LOBOS DRAFTED... The New Mexico baseball program has had 89 studentathletes in its history drafted by Major League Baseball including a schoolrecord seven in the 2013 draft. DJ Peterson led the way by becoming the highest draft pick in school history when the Seattle Mariners selected him with the 12th overall pick. Sam Wolff (sixth round - Texas Rangers) and Mitch Garver (ninth round - Minnesota Twins) gave UNM a trio of picks in the first 10 rounds. Alex Allbritton (21st round - Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim), Will Mathis (25th round - Seattle Mariners), Jake McCasland (26th round - San Francisco Giants) and Josh Melendez (37th round - Houston Astros) completed the record-setting draft for UNM. During Birmingham s tenure at UNM, New Mexico has had 21 players drafted and 24 have played professional baseball. John Pustay (Texas) and Alex Real (Atlanta) are current members of the team that have been previously drafted. 30-WIN SEASONS... The Lobos are averaging 34 wins per year in the seven years under Ray Birmingham... UNM only reached that number eight times before the Birmingham era... the Lobos run from was the most wins UNM has recorded in a three-year period in school history until winning 37 each year from in 2010, New Mexico had the third most wins in program history...the most wins in a season by the Lobos is 42 in the Lobos have won the most games in a seven-year stretch in program history (240). Most Wins in a Season ( ) ( ) ( ) ( ) ( ) ( ) ( ) ( ) ( ) ( ) ( ) KREMMEL S NO-NO April 17, 1970 is a day Lobo baseball history was made in Tucson, Ariz., when Jim Kremmel, a hard-throwing lefty from Columbia, Ill., tossed the only documented nine-inning no-hitter in school history. UNM s all-time strikeout king walked two, struck out 11 and allowed just one Arizona runner to advance to second base (on a walk and a sacrifice bunt in the sixth). The Lobos won the game 1-0 with an unearned run in the seventh inning. UNM s Mike Connell threw a 7-inning no-hitter on March 24, 1977, against New Mexico Highlands. Similar greatness has been flirted with by eight other Lobo hurlers by allowing just one hit in a game.
