Over his three-year career he has played viturally every position and will play third base this season SEASON OUTLOOK The University of New Mexico Lobo baseball team is geared up and ready to make a run at the 2010 Mountain West Conference Championship. Head coach Ray Birmingham and his staff have assembled a roster with depth at each position, a lineup with no holes and a pitching staff with several 90 mph arms. New Mexico returns two.400 hitters, who helped lead the Lobos to an NCAA batting title last season. All-America candidate Rafael Neda, and junior Ryan Honeycutt hit.406 and.415 last season respectively. The duo will be back to anchor a lineup with no easy outs from top to bottom. CATCHER There is no doubt who will be behind the dish for the Lobos this season. One of the best players to ever play the position at UNM, junior All-American candidate Rafael Neda is back for his third season as the Lobos catcher. Neda has been named to the 2010 Pro-Line Athletic Preseason All-America Team in the off-season as well as the 2010 Ping!baseball Preseason All-America Team. Last season Neda was named first-team All-MWC and looks to continue his reign as the MWC s best catcher and as one of the premier catchers in the nation. Freshman Mitchell Garver will back up Neda behind the plate. Garver, a La Cueva High School product, caught the attention of the coaching staff as a senior and is expected to carry the torch passed from Neda in the upcoming years. Garver was named first team allstate and first team all-district from and earned honorable mention All-American as a senior. Garver was named APS and La Cueva Male Athlete of the Year in 2009 as well as first team all-metro in OUTFIELD Senior Max Willett returns to center field and has posted back-to-back seasons with a perfect fielding percentage. Willett earned All-MWC Second Team honors last season and played all 57 games while hitting.355 at the plate. Junior transfer Kenny Held will take

7 New Mexico Baseball Notes Page 7 over for All-MWC right fielder Brian Cavazos-Galvez. Held has the speed to cover the gap in right-center and should have no problem picking up right where Cavazos-Galvez left off in right field. Held joins the Lobo squad from Central Arizona College in Coolidge, Ariz. Held played his high school ball at Mountain View High School in Tucson, Ariz., where he was the 2007 Arizona Player of the Year. He earned first team all-city and all-state honors as a junior and senior. Senior Cameron Smith saw action in 34 games last season and will roam the grass in left field in Smith spent 2009 as a pinch hitter and utility outfielder. Junior Ryan Honeycutt will also see time in left field. Honeycutt made 51 starts last season as either an outfielder or designated hitter. Honeycutt hit.406 last season and was one of four Lobos to finish the season hitting above.400. Senior Chris Juarez and freshmen Devon Conley and John Michael Twichell also will compete for playing time in the outfield. Juarez saw action in 30 games last season primarily in the outfield. Conley played for the 2009 State Champion Rio Rancho Rams and was named first team all-state, first team all-district and first team allmetro as a senior. Conley earned the title of Mr. Baseball in 2009 and played in the 2009 North vs. South All-Star game. Twichell played ball at Bishop Lynch High in Dallas, Texas where he was first team all-state and all-district as a senior and junior and second team all-state and all-district as a sophomore and freshman. INFIELD The New Mexico infield will see the biggest shuffle of new gloves to man the bags with the departure of of MWC Player of the Year second baseman Mike Brownstein, All-MWC first baseman Kevin Atkinson and third baseman Dane Hamilton. The Lobos will not skip a beat with senior Adam Courcha handling the responsibilities at the hot corner. Courcha saw time last season as a utility player and played a variety of positions in his three-year career. Courcha has incredible arm strength and can throw the ball across the diamond upwards of 90 mph. Sophomore Ben Woodchick will take over for Brownstein at second. Woodchick posted a perfect fielding percentage in 17 games and learned from the league s best second baseman. Senior Justin Howard will step in at first base. Howard posted a near perfect fielding percentage (.987) and served primarily as the Lobos designated hitter. He started 13 games last season at first base after a hand injury Dane Hamilton forced Atkinson to finish the season at third base. Senior Daniel Gonzalez returns for his second straight season at shortstop. Gonzalez started and played in all 57 games last season at shortstop and posted a fielding percentage of.964. Gonzalez was third on the team with 41 double plays turned. Freshman Brett Doe will challenge for playing time on the left side of the diamond as will fellow freshman Cody Voelker at first base. Doe is a two-time all-state and all-district award winner for Poteet High School in Mesquite, Texas. PITCHING STAFF The Lobo pitching staff has reloaded after the loss of Friday-night ace John Hesketh and closer Cole White. Returning to the bump for the Lobos is sophomore Rudy Jaramillo. That is the day Lobo baseball history was made when the hardthrowing lefty from Columbia, Ill., tossed the only documented 9-inning no-hitter in school history. UNM s all-time strikeout king walked two, struck out 11 and allowed just one Arizona runner to advance to second base (on a walk and a sacrifice fly in the sixth). The Lobos won the game 1-0 with an unearned run in the seventh inning. UNM s Mike Connell threw a 7-inning no-hitter on March 24, 1977, against New Mexico Highlands. Similar greatness has been flirted with by eight other Lobo hurlers by allowing just one hit in a game. Down On The Farm...
