2 HEAD COACH MIKE GAMBINO G HEAD COACH G FIFTH SEASON Mike Gambino, a 1999 Boston College graduate, was named head baseball coach on July 19, He is in charge of rebuilding a program that made an emphatic postseason statement in 2009, earning its first Atlantic Coast Conference Championship berth and first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since The Eagles went in his first season at the helm, but he saw four players get selected in the MLB First-Year Player Draft. In 2011, the Eagles improved to 20-33, winning 10 games in the highly-competitive ACC. In just one year, the team s batting average improved 19 points, slugging percentage 54 points and on-base percentage 27 points. The second-year head coach saw infielder Anthony Melchionda and outfielder Tom Bourdon earn All-ACC second-team honors and take home American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) All-Northeast Region and New England Intercollegiate Baseball Associate (NEIBA) All-Star accolades. Melchionda and classmate Matt Brazis were both drafted in the 2012 MLB Draft. A young team in 2013, the Eagles regularly started five freshmen, and Gambino worked to improve through the year. The overall batting average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage all rose significantly from the first half of the season to the second and the Eagles doubled their win total. In his fourth year at The Heights, Gambino saw the most improvement, recording the most wins under his tutelage and tying for the most in conference as the Eagles were and in the ACC. Sophomore outfield Chris Shaw earned First-Team All- ACC and ABCA honors while left-handed pitcher Andrew Chin was drafted in the 15th round. Since taking over at the Heights, Gambino has stressed off the field success as well, raising the team s GPA as a whole in his first four years. Eagles also earned four spots on the All-ACC Academic baseball team and 38 on the ACC Academic Honor Roll. Gambino, who was an assistant coach for the Eagles from , came from Virginia Tech where he spent four seasons as an assistant coach under former BC head coach, Pete Hughes. He served as the Hokies recruiting coordinator and also worked with the hitters and infielders. In his four years, he saw 15 players get drafted in the MLB Draft, including nine in From 1997 through 2006, only 13 Hokies were drafted in total. Virginia Tech s batting average improved 40 points under Gambino s direction since the 2006 season. With his help, the 2010 Hokies made their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 2000 and finished the season ranked No. 20 in the country. Prior to working in Blacksburg, Gambino spent two years as a regional scout for the Detroit Tigers. Gambino played for the Eagles from , starting 166 games in the middle infield. He held a career batting average of.313 with 22 doubles, eight homers, 87 RBIs and 117 runs. His 78 hits in 2000, which was No. 1 when he graduated, was tied for fifth, until 2011, when his own player, Bourdon, knocked it down one with 79 hits of his own. Gambino s 52 runs his final year is still tied for eighth. The Garrison, N.Y., native was a first-team All-Big East, All-New England and All- Northeast region honoree following his senior campaign. He also earned second-team All-New England and Big East Academic Team accolades during his playing career. Following his career with BC, Gambino played two seasons in the Boston Red Sox minor league system. He spent the 2000 season with the Augusta Green Jackets before splitting the 2001 season between Augusta and the Lowell Spinners. In 2002, the Red Sox hired Gambino as a special assistant to the Major League staff before heading back to Lowell for a coaching role with the Spinners just prior to the June draft. Following his stint in Lowell, the Red Sox sent Gambino to the MLB Scout Development Program. In January 2003, Gambino returned to Boston College as an assistant coach under Hughes. Gambino received his bachelor s degree from the Heights in English and theology. He currently lives in Newton, Mass., with his wife, Jill. 3 JIM FOSTER G ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH G FIRST SEASON Jim Foster joined the Boston College coaching staff as the associate head coach in July Foster, the Eagles pitching and catchers coach, brings 12 years of experience to the Heights. In nine seasons as the head coach at Rhode Island, Foster was the all-time winningest coach in program history, amassing a (.538) record. He led the Rams to six consecutive 30-win seasons, from 2008 to 2013, for the first time in program history and took them to eight consecutive Atlantic-10 Championship appearances from 2006 to He coached 28 all-conference selections, 21 All-New England selections, three All-Americans, three A-10 Pitchers of the Year and two A-10 Players of the Year. ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH In 2006, Foster s first year at the helm, the Rams claimed the A-10 regular-season title with a record, going 19-6 in conference. Seven players earned all-conference honors, including Atlantic-10 Player of the Year Steve Holmes, who led the nation with a 1.30 ERA. Foster served as the Rams pitching coach and worked the catchers in 2005 prior to his appointment as head coach. That season, URI s ERA ranked in the top 30 nationally, earning him an NCAA Pitching Coach of the Year nomination. The same year, the Rams won the Atlantic-10 Championship, receiving their first-ever NCAA Tournament berth. The Warwick, R.I., native was an All-Big East and two-time All-New England selection at Providence. He was drafted in the 22nd round by the Baltimore Orioles and spent seven years with the organization. He also played in the farm systems for Arizona, Anaheim and the Chicago White Sox. In 1997, he was named Baseball Weekly s Minor League Catcher of the Year and in 1993, to the Topps All-Rookie Team. After 10 years in the minor leagues, he worked for two seasons as an assistant coach at Brown, where he served as the hitting coach and worked with catchers. In 2013, the Rams earned the Atlantic-10 Regular-Season Co-Championship title, garnering their 11th straight bid to the conference tournament, and in 2011, Foster was named Atlantic-10 Coach of the Year after the Rams went overall and 16-8 in A-10 play. In 2009, the Rams set a URI record with 37 wins, including three over ranked teams (No. 8 Miami, No. 11 Oklahoma and No. 25 Ohio State), earning him CollegeBaseballInsider.com National Coach of Year Honorable Mention and New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) Coach of the Year honors. 4 ASSISTANT COACHES GREG SULLIVAN G ASSISTANT COACH G FIFTH SEASON JIMMY VAN OSTRAND G ASSISTANT COACH G SECOND SEASON Greg Sullivan is in his fifth season as an assistant coach for the Boston College baseball team. He came to the Heights after spending four seasons as the head coach at Newbury College. Sullivan primary works with the outfielders, hitters and is one of the three primary recruiters on staff. During the summer, he is responsible for running the Boston College Baseball Camps. Since 2013, Sullivan has helped multiple players transition from the infield to the outfield and fill key roles for the Eagles. Current sophomore Michael Strem, juniors Logan Hoggarth and Chris Shaw and senior Travis Ferrick came to The Heights as infielders and have made the move to the outfield. In 2014, centerfielder Tom Bourdon and right fielder Shaw combined for 12 outfield assists as Bourdon s seven tied for 11th in the nation after the regular season. Shaw did not make an error in 105 chances in right after starting as a first baseman as a freshman. Sullivan was named Newbury College s first head coach in January 2007 and began laying the groundwork for the development of the program. In 2008, he was named the national Coach of the Year by the Association of Division III Independents. The Nighthawks earned the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Sportsmanship Award in each of his last two seasons. Sullivan has largely been involved in recruitment, including his time at Boston College and Newbury College. He also worked with player recruitment when he was the hitting coach for the Manchester Silkworms of the New England Collegiate Baseball League during the summers of , as well as with the Carolina Chaos of the Southern Collegiate Baseball League in the 2006 summer. Jimmy Van Ostrand joined the Boston College baseball staff as a volunteer coach before the start of the 2014 season. He brought seven years of international and minor league playing experience to the Eagles. Van Ostrand works primarily with hitters, corner infielders and prepares scouting reports and defensive alignments. The Vancouver, B.C., native was a member of the Canadian National Baseball Team since He played in the 2013 World Baseball Classic, three Baseball World Cups, the 2008 Summer Olympics and the 2011 Pan American Games. He drove in the only two runs for his team in the Pan Am Championship game to lead Canada to a 2-1 victory and the gold medal over the United States. In the Olympics, he was 4-for-14 with two RBIs and he helped the Canadians bring home bronze medals at the 2009 and 2011 World Cups. Van Ostrand played for California Polytechnic State University in 2005 and He earned NCAA West Region Scholar-Athlete and first-team all-conference honors. As a Mustang, he batted.317, tallying 114 hits, 44 RBIs and 17 home runs. He was drafted in the eighth round by the Houston Astros of the 2006 MLB First-Year Players Draft and spent the last eight seasons playing in the minor leagues, reaching the triple-a level. In the Washington Nationals organization, Van Ostrand played 21 games, tallying 21 hits in 71 at bats for the Syracuse Chiefs in the International League after being promoted from double-a during the 2013 summer. In 2011, he earned Houston Astros MiLB Organizational All-Star honors, recording a.306 batting average to go along with a 48 RBIs, 22 doubles, 11 homers and 43 walks, playing for the Corpus Christi Hooks. Van Ostrand earned his bachelors of science degree, majoring in kinesiology from Cal Poly in In 2009 and 2010, he was the assistant tournament director of the Division III New England Baseball Regional Tournament and was also a representative for the NECC to the All-New England Committee. A 2006 graduate of Eastern Connecticut State, Sullivan earned his bachelor s degree in communications. He was a four-year starter for Bill Holowaty and led the Warriors to three Division III national tournament appearances, finishing second in He was also the recipient of the Francis E. Geissler Sportsperson of the Year his senior year, as well as the Rick Ganoe Coach s Award and was named the team captain. The Needham, Mass., native earned his masters of education from Fitchburg State University in 2010 and is an adjunct professor at Newbury College s School of Business and Management. 5 PETE FRATES DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS G DIRECTOR OF BASEBALL OPERATIONS G FOURTH SEASON Pete Frates joined the Boston College baseball team as the director of baseball operations during the 2012 season. A former player, Frates captained the Eagles his senior year in Frates was diagnosed with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in March He played in the outfield for the Maroon and Gold from In both his junior and senior year, he tied for the team lead with five home runs, finishing his career with 11. He also tied for a team-high eight sacrifice hits his senior year and led the Eagles with 19 stolen bases. The centerfielder set a modern BC record with eight RBIs in one game, going 4-for-6 with a grand slam, a three-run homer and an RBI double at Maryland on April 14, In Frates junior year, he went 4-for-4 with a home run, a double and three RBIs in the Eagles 10-2 win over Harvard in the Beanpot Championship at Fenway Park. Prior to playing at The Heights, Frates played baseball, football and hockey at St. John s Prep in Danvers, Mass. He was named a Catholic Conference All-Star his senior year and was a member of the 2002 and 2003 conference championship teams. Frates created Baseball Mentor Night, which gives former players the chance to speak to current Eagles about life after baseball. Along with his BC baseball duties, Frates works to raise ALS awareness and education and funds for research. He and his family established the Pete Frates #3 Fund to help subsidize medical care and expenses not covered by health insurance. In the summer of 2014, Frates championed the Ice Bucket Challenge through the use of social media. Along with the amount of awareness brought to ALS, over $200 million was raised to help find a cure. To learn more about Frates s story, visit Frates graduated from Boston College in 2007 with a bachelor s degree in communications. He currently resides in his hometown of Beverly, Mass., with wife Julie and baby, Lucy. Frates completed his own Ice Bucket Challenge at Fenway Park with his family and members of the Red Sox looking on. Ice Bucket Challenge Pete Frates, along with friend Pat Quinn, a 31-year-old Queens, N.Y., ALS patient, were the catalysts behind the Ice Bucket Challenge, a social media phenomenon that spread around the globe in August Many in the BC community and well beyond took to dumping a bucket of ice water over their heads to bring attention and much-needed resources for ALS research. Once completing the Ice Bucket Challenge or donating to an ALS charity or both participants gave a new group 24 hours to complete the feat. Current and former Eagles around the country doused themselves with buckets of ice water, including head men s hockey coach Jerry York, Matt Ryan, Doug Flutie, Andre Williams and Mark Herzlich. Many local sports stars joined the cause, such as Jason Varitek, Milan Lucic and Julien Edelman. Head BC football coach Steve Addazio, SportsCenter anchor Steve Levy, the Kennedy family, Justin Timberlake and the Patriots team, including head coach Bill Belichick and owner Robert Kraft, completed the Ice Bucket Challenge. That was all in the first weeks. During six weeks spanning mid-july to Labor Day, more than 2.5 million people participated in the viral campaign and the ALS Association reported $115 million donated. Countless other ALS charities also received funds putting the total donations over $200 million. In Decemeber 2014, Sports Illustrated named Frates its Inspiration of the Year along with fellow ALS adovate and patient Steve Gleason, a former NFL player BASEBALL G PAGE 11
6 SUPPORT STAFF TOM PETERS G SENIOR ASSOCIATE ATHLETICS DIRECTOR Tom Peters, who was promoted to senior associate athletics director in May 2010, is in his 23rd year at Boston College. Peters joined the Eagles staff as an associate athletics director in January Prior to coming to the Heights, Peters spent more than three years as associate athletic director at Tulane University. In addition, Peters served as Tulane s acting athletic director from December 1990 until June Peters responsibilities at Boston College include overseeing nine of the men s and women s athletic programs men s and women s ice hockey, men s and women s soccer, men s and women s swimming, men s and women s fencing and baseball and serving as the department s liaison with numerous athletic-related support groups. NICK ASERMELLY Strength and Conditioning Coach Laurel Carter Marketing Matt Conway Associate Athletics Director, Facilities & Operations Peters has also served as tournament manager for a host of postseason events, including the 2009 NCAA Men s Basketball East Regional, the 1999 and 2003 NCAA Men s Basketball East Region First and Second Rounds and the 2003 Intercollegiate Fencing Association championships. Peters served as chair of the Men s Hockey East executive committee in and serves on the Hockey East Special Events Committee. He served on the executive committee of Women s Hockey East from to Peters is also a member of the men s and women s Beanpot Hockey Tournament Committees, which organize the annual competition between the city s four Division I hockey schools. In addition to his departmental assignments, Peters has been active on campus and in the Boston community. He has served on the University Committee on Alcohol and Drug Abuse and is a former member of the Student Leadership Awards Committee for the Office of the Dean of Student Development. He also was a long-time committee member of the Boston Police Department Youth and Student-Athlete Collaborative. Peters earned a master s degree in sports management from the University in Peters was then an administrative assistant at the University of Virginia, before joining the New Boston Garden Corporation and Boston Bruins as assistant sales and marketing manager in In 1976, he was named sales and marketing manager. From there, Peters moved to New Jersey where he was the assistant athletic director at Rutgers University from He was the tournament manager of the NCAA Basketball Tournament s East Regional from Michael Rivera Student Manager Stephen Remick Equipment Kristina von Harten Academic Counselor Peters was honored by his alma mater in November of 2004, when the sport management program awarded him the Harold J. VanderZwaag Distinguished Alumnus Award in recognition of outstanding contributions to the sport industry. A native of Arlington, Mass., Peters has two daughters: Nicole, a private equity and fundraising liaison and graduate of Connecticut College, and Erica, who received her B.A. from Boston College in 2002 and Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Vermont.
