3 Effect, Potential and Challenges CO 2 reduction at a good price Socioeconomic considerations shows that reducing rolling resistance from road pavements is competitive to other means of reducing CO 2 emissions. Less tire/road noise On all test sections noise has been measured and these measurements shows that that pavements with low rolling resistance also has a positive effect on noise. Compared to traditional used pavements on the state roads in Denmark. Defined asphalt type in 2017 for commercial use in 2018 I different mix-designs, based on SMA 6 and SMA8 has been tested on accelerated conditions. The results shows that the SMA 8 low RR pavement has a durability equal to SMA 11, which is the traditional used pavement type. Further accelerated tests are conducted in 2017 at VTI in Sweden. Expected durability More than 16 years. 3.

6 The value of using pavements with low rolling resistance in relation to using traditional motorway pavements The scenario is that we pave 50 km low rolling resistance pavements per year, replacing existing pavements. The table shows the reduction potential using SMA 11 or COOEE SMA 8, respectively. The overall reduction in CO 2 using SMA 8 COOEE instead of SMA 11 is app. 63% (calculations based on 1600 road sections on Danish state roads) Pavement type Year 2018 reduction in CO 2 (ton) Year 2019 reduction in CO 2 (ton) Year 2020 reduction in CO 2 (ton) SMA 8 COOEE SMA

21 Conclusion: Motorway pavements can be constructed with the expected functional conditions; Friction, texture, evenness and rolling resistance This is fine for the expectations of to day But we are raising the bar for what we expect by the performance of the pavements and the question is - What is the requirement for the future? - What should we measure and are the measurement devices and especially the indexes we are using sufficiently precise to establish the right and robust KPI s? 21.
