2 The Danish Road Directorate Is responsible for the national road network: Is part of: We work in these main areas: Planning We conduct studies and plan in order to determine where new roads are to be built and where there is a need for increased traffic safety or capacity on the national road network Motorways Express roads Construction We construct new roads, roundabouts, cycle paths and bridges and also put up noise barriers and develop the existing road network Operation We operate and maintain the roads and the surrounding areas we lay new asphalt, mow the grass and clear the roads of snow Main roads Bridges Traffic administration and management We guide road users through the traffic, for example, in the event of accidents or road works via signposting, electronic information boards and traffic information in various media

6 How a road comes into being? Enquiry The Ministry of Transport asks the Danish Road Directorate to look into the Feasibility study The Danish Road Directorate conducts feasibility studies, Environmental Impact Planning and design proposal The Danish Road Directorate submits a proposal to Construction Act The Danish Parliament passes a construction act possibilities of constructing a new road or Assessments etc. and submits the proposals the Ministry of Transport as to where the road is to be expanding an existing one for consultation with the public, businesses built and how it can be designed and the authorities Final planning and design The Danish Road Directorate endeavours to obtain all the details regarding the location and design of the road in place Expropriation The Expropriation Committee acquires the land for the road project Road works The contractor builds the road under the supervision of the Danish Road Directorate Opening The Danish Road Directorate opens the road (or new lane/s) to road users
