2 How everything started: Processes and Structures 2008: Hamburg Cycling Strategy Adopted by the Senate, but very limited resources Progress reports in 2010, 2013 and 2015 April 2015: Coalition agreement: Building modern Hamburg Senate decision: bicycle traffic will be one of the main fields of investment An Alliance for Cycling will name obligatory targets and actions October 2015: The Cycling Coordinator took over Summon forces from all over the city of Hamburg Direct access to all concerned administrations Wide-ranging right to be informed and to participate in decisions Keeping an eye on all targets Group of specialists with a dedicated budget Images: BWVI 2

7 Veloroutes as a backbone cycling network: Milestones since 2016 First step: Planning the network Updating the network first planned in 1999 Adapting 40 sections in order to find sustainable solutions fulfilling the needs of cyclists Presenting the results in borough parliament committees and in local committees and forums Image: BWVI 7

8 Veloroutes as a backbone cycling network: Milestones since 2016 Second step: Finding out what needs to be done What we did: Talk with everybody concerned with building infrastructure Check maps - and go out on our bikes to check infrastructure Think about how to improve cycling while respecting all other modes of transport Image: BWVI 8

9 Building the Veloroute network in Hamburg Check every mile: Is there anything that needs to be done? Red: Urgent change needed! Green: Everything is fine! 10 Veloroutes as a backbone cycle network: Milestones since 2016 At the same time: Looking for a Central Steering Office The steering office 1. helps departments in charge of building, e. g. by preparing tender documents 2. controls time frames and finances by annual agreements about projects 3. monitors and reports Kickoff in March 2017 Image: BWVI 10

15 Systematic approach to the promotion of bicycle traffic Expanding our bike sharing scheme StadtRAD + new tendering Current status: 211 ports and 2,450 bikes New tendering: Up to 350 ports Approx. 4,500 bikes system available all over Hamburg 20 shared cargo bikes with an electric drive unit, to be increased to up to 70 in the future To be regarded as basic infrastructure in town planning processes Integrated urban mobilty (eticketing, switchh switchh: Public bikes and car sharing as a range extender for public transport customers with integrated travel information, ticketing and station design Images: BWVI, Google Maps + switchh 15

16 Systematic approach to increasing cycling Service: Expanding Bike+Ride We are aiming at building Bike and Ride facilities for approximately bicycles at all 133 overground stations by racks for free use racks for rent (~ 20 %) thereof racks with a roof (~ 50 %) Images: BWVI + P+R GmbH 16
