3 Since 1995 Best overall cycling province in Belgium, 8 years Very important factors for users: - Width of cycle paths - Absence of motorised traffic - State of the surface of the roads - Safe crossing points General satisfaction = 98% If not satisfied: mainly due to quality of road surface Quality monitoring is extremely important to maintain this quality level

Quality charter : task distribution Main partners: Tourism Limburg marketing product development Province first-line maintenance (department of Mobility) technical support for municipalities (department of Mobility) Through intense collaboration and structural meetings, especially between Tourism Limburg and province Quality charter in every municipality (44!) subsidies (department of Economics) Municipalities / other road managers = second-line maintenance

10 REPORTS - solutions Province: own gang of workmen (6) who respond to reports (= first line maintenance) and 1 fulltime master controller What kind of reports do they attend to? - Signage (maintenance, replacements ) - XY coordinates - Damage reports - Report litter - Minor but urgent repairs - Other reports are dispatched to other route managers Additionally: 2 social-economic teams

Design & implementation of projects on the network: technical support The province (department Mobility) offers through : - inventorise existing situation (if necessary) - negotiations with authorities concerned - developing plans (ground plans, longitudinal profiles, transversal profiles) - draft specifications and detailed budgets - organizing tendering in line with legislation - necessary reports and documents - supervising and providing advice for subsidies - supervision of the work itself Free of charge 3 full-time engineers

18 3. Support for design and subsidies B. Standards for markings & signage Check all existing signposts and signs Signage plan Keeping signposts to a minimum but ensuring they are clear and safe

20 3. Support for design and subsidies C. Subsidies (financial support) The department of Economics processes subsidy applications for investment subsidies for the tourist cycle path network to make tourist cycle paths bike-friendly. up to 50% for installing or improving cycle paths or routes and/or installing safe bicycle crossings on municipal roads up to 50% for installing, setting up or creating access to locations or creating the facilities that improve the overall experience of the cycle path network up to 30% for installing or improving other tourist cycle routes.

21 4. Screening project (new) What: create and stimulate room for improvement within the network How : screening of this network in all municipalities in the province, one-by-one (2000 km!). Ultimate aim: create a long-term plan for maintaining the network, linked to investment budgets and efficient use of both financial resources and staff. Who? 1 almost fulltime staff member

23 STEP 3 Proactive approach to support to the maximum the municipalities Presentation of screening results to the municipalities Draw up list of measures to restore elements that did not score very well Draw up long term plan and budgets
