Bremen: From a large cycling city to a cycling capital 5 th International PRESTO Cycling Workshop October 2011 in Bremen, Germany Introduction to the PRESTO project Cycling is the most energy efficient urban transport mode it is non-polluting, healthy, fast, flexible and very cost efficient. It has a high potential to reduce energy-consumption and thus to enhance the liveability of European cities. Although cycling is already a serious transport mode in some countries, most of this potential still has to be activated. It can also become a high impact measure to foster energy-efficient transport patterns in countries without a real cycling culture. PRESTO contributes to effectively activate this potential. Overarching aim of PRESTO is to help unlocking the unexploited Europe-wide potential for a modal shift towards more cycling as the most energy efficient and sustainable means of urban transport. Overview of the training workshop PRESTO disseminates the best European know-how on cycling policies by focusing on three thematic pillars: infrastructure planning, promotional soft measures and promotion of pedelecs. The project runs a series of five training sessions with varying emphases and different European cycling experts from outside the project to stimulate discussions in the PRESTO cities, to provide input to solving local problems and to encourage the take up of ideas by other cities. Participants of the fifth PRESTO cycling workshop in Bremen will have the opportunity to find out best practices and exchange their opinions and ideas with European specialists from other champion cities on the following topics: Bicycle traffic in Bremen Departure to 30% cycling share in 2020 Wilhelm Hamburger, Cycling officer for the state of Bremen Bicycle counters Tool or toy?
