3 Project Summary The main objective of Bike2Work is to achieve a significant modal shift from motorized transport to cycling by introducing behaviour change programs to employers & employees. Bike2Work will: Extend and intensify existing nation-wide campaigns Enable small scale campaigns to be successful on a bigger scale Replicate campaigns in more countries, cities or regions Impact and greatly increase the number of bicycle-friendly companies in Europe Ensure the sustainability of all these measures after the end of the project.

5 Objectives Prove to governments that Bike2Work interventions are highly effective in changing behaviour towards cycling and therefore a complement to infrastructure investments. Make Bike2Work programmes sustainable within cycling NGOs and employers networks. Raise the image of commuter biking. Ensure SMEs access sustainability and workplace health improvement actions. 81,000 new cyclists created at a cost of 222 each 8,870 tons of fuel savings and 52,299 tons CO2 savings during the project

Commuting is a routine trip that can be changed across modes Workplace social marketing techniques work -Internal communications methods -Facilities are available for events, training, sampling, product displays -Workplace champions/role models/trainers -Competition behaviours/gamification works -Open to all sizes/types of employers -Parallel activity in workplace health External stakeholders are engaged -Peak time congestion has to be addressed -Infrastructure provided -Public transport operators share target market

8 Results proven in a variety of situations National Bike2Work campaigns: Countries with an already high share of cyclists i.e. Denmark, Germany were able to gain 10-11% new permanent cyclists. Countries with a medium share of bicycle traffic like Austria managed 13% increase UK research demonstrated that there is a 14% shift from car to bicycles On-going campaigns in project consortium partner countries currently have a baseline of about 326,500 participants

16 Approach 2: Cycle Friendly Employers Certification or consultancy Recognising employers who provide Parking Clothes storage (showers?) Bikes, access to public bikes Promotion: ex. Cycle training (bike buddy, bicycle user group), Events (bike breakfasts etc.) Incentives Mileage allowance Take part in government schemes tax incentives etc Prizes and awards

17 Summary Bike2work aims to create a modal shift to cycling by; - Encouraging behaviour change - Removing barriers at the workplace Bike2work uses promotional campaigns and consultancy and certification of employers This approach creates effective incentives for employees And it makes sense for employers too! Positive results already exist in several national cases
