4 Aims and Activities (1) Increasing the modal share of cycling in 6 European cities with 4 types of actions: Introduction of bike-sharing (also known as public bikes) schemes; Implementation of communication and awareness raising campaigns; Integration of cycling planning in the overall process of spatial and transport planning; Building local partnerships of cycling-relevant stakeholders.

5 Aims and Activities (2) A further stream of action concerned the benchmarking of activities: Issuing Velo.Info Status Award in Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum for their cycling policy; Compiling City Characteristics Report published on the SPICYCLES Interactive Map for Europe on cycling planning; Producing a Comparison Report amongst participating cities; Developing the Velo.Info Benchmarking Tool available at

7 Achievements (1): Barcelona Marketing with schools: 12 schools and around students; 28 km of new lanes being implemented in 2007/8 (total of 155 kms); new bike parking places only in 2007 ( in total); 30 km/h zones implemented in initial four areas; Comissió Cívica de la Bicicleta : Bicycle Week and Bicycle Guide (5.000 copies); Bicycle Registration System: 1227 registered bikes / 20 stolen bikes; Bicing (bike-sharing): from a pilot with 200 bikes to bikes and 400 stations, subscribers; rides/day; Ridership (manual counts): from average trips/day in 2006 to in 2007 (+36.2%)!!

9 Achievements (2): Berlin Call a bike (bike sharing): extension of the existing DB Rent system (15 new rental station and bikes) and integration with many other services (hotels, PT, etc.); Motivation and image campaign joined by the German Car Driver Association (ADAC) and the German Cyclist Association (ADFC) ; Second Level bicycle route network (with guidelines for planning); Bicycle parking infrastructure (with guidelines for planning).

11 Achievements (3): Bucharest More than 50 km of dedicated cycling paths; 1% increase of bicycle usage; Release of Technical study for the development of cycling infrastructure and Study for adapting the PT vehicles for bikes transport Guide for Cycling as a decision tool for cycling projects Bike sharing centre with 100 bicycles launched in August 2008

13 Achievements (4): Göteborg Bike sharing pilot scheme in Lundby: 125 bicycles, 11 stations, 315 cards sold, extension to city centre planned; Campaigns behavioural change: Lighting project (1.000 cyclists) and Cycle course for migrant women (11 courses, 120 participants); Cycling marketing to employees of the municipality; Distribution of cycle maps; Bicycle highways : 4 bicycle lanes identified, 2 already upgraded; Cycle infromation centre at central Station planned.

15 Achievements (5): Ploiesti Bike-sharing pilot scheme: 100 bicycles, 300 users; Communication campaign for cycling; Bicycle-friendly reconstruction of the 22 most dangerous intersections; 15% reduction of accidents; Local partnerships with several companies interested in bike sharing and bike infrastructure development (Timisoreana, Coca-Cola, Petrom, Distrigaz, Unilever, Raifeisen Bank).

17 Achievements (6): Rome Roma'n'bike : bike sharing pilot scheme with 19 pick-up and drop stations, 200 bicycles, 271 intelligent bicycles racks; First results (June July 2008): subscribers; bicycles pickups; phone calls; Update of ATAC Infopoint database for routing calculation; Production of cycling and pedestrian network s map Roma a Pedali ; Cycle lanes: from 100 kms in 2004 to 230 in 2008; 400 new racks. Local partnerships allowing bike transport on metro trains and on bus lines.
